Player Notes
September 28, 2008
Pirates' GM Neal Huntington stated that the Pirates will not be "big players" in free agency, but noted that they will be looking for a power bat, a starting pitcher, and a setup reliever (likely a righty), according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:Trading Jack Wilson would free up $7.25 million. Team president Frank Coonelly stated two weeks ago that the budget for major league payroll will rise from the current $54 million, but he stressed that does not mean the number will be filled just to be filled.
September 26, 2008
Ian Snell only issued one earned run on one hit over five innings in Friday's 6-3 win over the Padres, with one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:Snell struggled for most of the season, but ended on a high note, as he only allowed one earned run in each of his last two starts.
September 13, 2008
Ian Snell issued five earned runs on nine hits over a mere four innings of work in Saturday's 7-6 win over the Cardinals, with no walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:He continues to struggle and ended his poor outing with a no decision. He only recorded six wins over 29 starts in 2008.
September 2, 2008
Ian Snell threw a good game for the Pirates, earning his sixth victory in the team's 3-2 win over the Reds. Snell gave up just one earned run in six innings of work.

Our View:Snell is wildly inconsistent, and if he could ever remedy that, he might be an asset in fantasy leagues. Alas, that does not seem likely, at least not in Pittsburgh.
August 19, 2008
The Pirates got just enough hits and more than enough runs to pull the 4-1 win over St. Louis, thanks in large part to the efforts of RHP Ian Snell. Snell pitched seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing just four hits and one walked powered by eight strikeouts.

Our View:Snell improves to 5-10 on the season with a 5.60 ERA. He has registered just two wins since April 12th before this evening, though he has allowed just nine earned runs over his last four starts.
August 9, 2008
The lack of offense in Pittsburgh's 4-2 loss to Philly resulted in another disappointing result for Ian Snell, pitching six innings to allow three runs (all earned) on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:This is one of the better outings Snell has put forth in recent weeks, but if there is no offense to support the cause, it doesn't matter.
August 3, 2008
As has become customary, Ian Snell struggled once again for the Pirates permitting four runs and 10 base runners while recording only 12 outs.

Our View:Snell has allowed four or more earned runs in eight of his last 12 games as his ERA continues to climb (6.14). Only a sadist has him active at the moment.
July 31, 2008
The Mets have "kicked around" the idea of trading for Ian Snell and sticking him in the bullpen for the rest of the year, according to SI's Jon Heyman.

Our View:The Mets would put Snell in the rotation next year. He'll require a steep price despite his down 2007 season.
July 28, 2008
Ian Snell allowed four runs and eight hits to go along with a walk and eight strikeouts against the red hot Rockies on Monday. He won for just the second time in his last 18 starts. He is 4-8 this season.

Our View:Snell is better than he has appeared in 2008. His numbers are terrible but don't be shocked to see them improve from here out.
July 23, 2008
Ian Snell had another brutal outing on Wednesday as he allowed six hits, three walks and five runs over just three innings.

Our View:About the only good news here is that he escaped without picking up a loss. This was the fourth time in six starts that Snell has failed to pitch five innings, and it was the eighth straight outing of at least three walks. He belongs nowhere near a starting lineup.
July 18, 2008
Ian Snell pitched a quality game for Pittsburgh but suffered the loss as the Pirates were taken down 5-2 by the Rockies. Snell went six innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out five.

Our View:Snell's record dropped to 3-8 on the year, and though he has tantalized fantasy owners before, he cannot be trusted to make consistent quality starts.
July 8, 2008
Ian Snell, who will be making his first start tonight since June 22, has a simple plan, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He said, "Just let her rip. I feel great. A hundred percent. Better than I have all year. And I'm going to throw the ball like I know I can. The velocity's there. The break is there. I can't wait to get out there. My injury kept my velocity down, and it made me change my arm angles all the time. But not now. I'm ready to go."

Our View:Manager John Russell will be monitoring Snell closely once he reaches 70-80 pitches, but there is no set limit if he looks solid. Snell allowed 11 earned runs over his last two starts, and should not be considered for your lineup in his first game back.
July 3, 2008
Ian Snell will be removed from the DL on Tuesday and make the start against the Houston Astros, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View:Snell is not having a good year after showing so much promise last season. He should not be on fantasy rosters at this point, and until he can lower that 5.99 ERA and 1.93 WHIP, he shouldn't even be considered.
June 26, 2008
Ian Snell has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a mild muscle strain in his elbow, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The move makes room for newly acquired reliever Denny Bautista on the 25-man roster.

Our View:The move is retroactive to Monday, meaning he is eligible to return on July 8.
June 26, 2008
Ian Snell threw soft toss off flat ground from 60 feet on Wednesday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View:He is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Thursday. If the session goes favorably, he could be back in action for the Pirates over the weekend.
June 25, 2008
Ian Snell was told he could begin throwing within the next two days after tests on Monday cleared the right-hander of any significant injury, this according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "It took them about 45 minutes to tell me, and I was freaking out sitting in DeMeo's office," Snell said of team physician, Dr. Patrick DeMeo. "Brad Henderson, our head trainer, came in and told me I was fine. But I still wanted to hear it from the doctor."

Our View:Snell is nursing elbow soreness and is expected to miss one start.
June 23, 2008
Ian Snell may have his next start skipped, but he is not expected to land on the DL, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Snell has a case of "golfer's elbow" that has him listed as day-to-day. "Probably, he'll only have to miss one start," GM Neal Huntington said. "Hopefully, we can avoid the disabled list."

Our View:John Van Benschoten likely will be recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to start Friday in place of the injured Phil Dumatrait, but it's not clear who will start for Snell if he isn't able to go.
June 23, 2008
Ian Snell's MRI has revealed no structural damage to the ulnar collateral ligament, but he has been diagnosed with "golfers elbow," according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View:Treatments sometimes include anti-inflammatory drugs, but more often than not rest and elbow support are the best ways to aid the problem. He is listed as day-to-day. The Pirates have not yet decided whether he will skip his next scheduled start, which would be Friday against the Rays.
June 22, 2008
Ian Snell's elbow has been bothering him for while, and after suffering through four innings on Sunday he has been scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday, according to the Times On Line. “It hurt on every pitch,” he said. “I’ve never had an injury before, never messed up any bones or had surgery. This is all new to me.”

Our View:Snell has been awful virtually all year, so an injury certainly seems possible. Many of Snell's fastballs on Sunday where in the 89-90 mph range, four to five miles below where he normally resides with the heat. Stay tuned for further updates, but even the best case scenario will likely have him missing his next scheduled start on Friday.
June 22, 2008
Ian Snell suffered another brutal outing on Sunday as he allowed eight hits, four walks and four runs over just four innings for the Pirates.

Our View:Snell has been dealing with some tenderness in his throwing arm for a while, but his across the board regression this season hints that the issue may be more than some minor annoyance. With a WHIP approaching 2.00, Snell has been a ratio killer.
June 11, 2008
Ian Snell won his third game of the season on Wednesday as he limited the Nationals to just one run over six innings for the Pirates.

Our View:Snell has been beset by ineffectiveness for most of the season, but over his last two starts he has 15 K and just six BB, so perhaps now is the time to make a trade offer for the fire balling righty.
June 1, 2008
Ian Snell allowed six runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out three in on four inning of work as the Pirates lost 7-4 to the Cardinals.

Our View:Snell lost his fifth consecutive decision and is 0-5 in his past nine starts. His last win came April 12.
May 28, 2008
Ian Snell is justifiably upset with himself. The right-hander struggled again on Tuesday against the Reds. "I need to get my (stuff) together," Snell tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "I'm letting everybody down. I'm letting myself down... For crying out loud, I walked, like, 100 people tonight. I can't seem to keep pitches down. Or if I keep them down, they're not strikes. And if they're close, they're not strikes." For the record, Snell walked seven batters over five innings.

Our View:There's no getting around it. Snell has been awful over his last seven starts, and fantasy owners are in a tough spot. He needs to be on fantasy benches until he figures out what's wrong.
May 27, 2008
Ian Snell will take the hill against the Reds in Cincinnati tonight, according to MLB.com. Snell is 2-3 this season with a 4.84 ERA and poor 1.70 WHIP, and is 1-2 with a 4.32 ERA in four career starts at the Great American Ball Park.

Our View:Snell is having a disappointing campaign, and has a poor track against the Reds in Cincinnati. He should remain on your bench tonight.
May 15, 2008
Ian Snell had another rough outing on Thursday as he was hammered for 11 hits and five runs in only four innings against the Cardinals. He received a no-decision for his efforts.

Our View:Snell has failed to even remotely approach the expectations that most had for him entering this season, but there are no indications that he is injured meaning he likely would make a nice target to acquire via the trade route with his value being depressed.
May 5, 2008
Ian Snell's record dropped to 2-2 with Sunday's loss to the Nationals. His 5.09 ERA and 1.65 WHIP are very concerning, especially for the most consistent piece of a Pirates rotation. Snell's strike outs are down on the season. He has only 22 in 34.2 innings of work for a career low 5.53 K/9.

Our View:The fact that Snell hasn't had more than five strikouts in any of his seven starts indicates there are problems with his mechanics or he isn't completely healthy.
May 4, 2008
Ian Snell continues to struggle. He served up 10 hits and four runs over six innings against the Nationals on Sunday. Snell struck out only two batters. He has allowed at least three runs in six of his seven starts this year.

Our View:We still like Snell in general, but his current work is a bit alarming. He's not making batters miss at the moment. It may be a decent buy-low moment.
April 30, 2008
Ian Snell has struggled a bit out of the gate with a 4.93 ERA and 1.62 WHIP, and he plans on showing some major improvement moving forward, according to MLB.com. "I'm trying to be too relaxed and trying to place the ball rather than do what I do, and that's throw hard," Snell said. "I've just got to get back to my original self and stop trying to be something that I'm not."

Our View:Snell is averaging less than six K per 9 IP while allowing almost 11 hits per 9, two key factors in his early struggles. As such, Snell's value is currently depressed making him an excellent pitcher to target if his current owner is dissatisfied with his early results.
April 23, 2008
Ian Snell lasted six innings against the Cardinals and picked up the no-decision as he allowed four runs in six innings.

Our View:Snell was totally out of character tonight with four BB and only one K, but he kept his team in the game when he didn't have his best stuff, and that is the mark of a champion.
April 23, 2008
Ian Snell is set to start against the Cardinals tonight, according to MLB.com. Snell is 2-1 so far with a 4.07 ERA over 24.1 innings, with 20 strikeouts.

Our View:Snell continues to hover around the top-20 starting pitchers in the National League. Both his ERA and WHIP (1.40) will need to be lower if he wants to firmly establish himself as a top-notch starter.
April 18, 2008
Ian Snell lost his first game of the season on Friday as he allowed three runs in six innings against the Cubs. Snell struck out five while walking one and allowing nine hits on the day.

Our View:Snell continues to hang around the top-20 starters in the NL, and there appears to be many reasons to believe that a potential breakout could happen this season.
April 12, 2008
Ian Snell picked up his second win of the season despite striking out only two batters and allowing nine hits in 6.1 innings on Saturday night.

Our View:Snell limited the Reds to three runs on the night and continues to offer reasons to believe that he could end up as one of the top-20 starters in the NL this season.
April 6, 2008
Ian Snell was impressive on Sunday as he only allowed two runs on four hits over six innings against Florida, with an eye opening 10 strikeouts and no walks, in a 9-2 win. He performed like the Pirates ace today, and bounced back from his first start in which he allowed four runs in a no decision against Atlanta.
April 1, 2008
Ian Snell struggled in a no decision on Monday night as he allowed four runs on seven hits (solo home run by Brian McCann) over six innings of work against Atlanta, with two walks and three strikeouts. He is the Pirates' ace and the team must be displeased with his outing, even though they won the game in extra innings 12-11.
March 25, 2008
Ian Snell had a favorable outing on Tuesday as he allowed two runs on six hits over six innings of work, with four strikeouts and one walk. He improved his spring record to 2-3 and has some positive momentum heading into his opening day start.
March 20, 2008
Ian Snell was dealt his third loss of the spring on Thursday as he surrendered three runs on five hits (three home runs) over 5.2 innings of work against Philadelphia, with three strikeouts and two walks. His ERA climbed to 4.34 and the three home runs allowed today has to be troubling for the Pirates' opening day starter.
March 17, 2008
Ian Snell will be the Pirates' opening day starting pitcher, according to MLB.com. He currently holds a 1-2 record with a 4.15 ERA and nine strikeouts over 13 innings of work.
March 16, 2008
Following a story from earlier in the week, Ian Snell has accepted a new three-year agreement with the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to the Associated Press. Snell and the Pittsburgh Pirates agreed Sunday to three-year contract worth at least $8 million, a deal reached five days after the Pirates had unilaterally renewed the pitcher for 2008. Snell would have been eligible for salary arbitration after next season. The agreement includes team options for 2011 and 2012. Pittsburgh selected Snell in the 26th round of the 2000 amateur draft after he graduated from high school in Camden, Del. The 26-year-old right-hander went 9-12 last season with a 3.76 ERA in 32 starts and has a 24-26 record in a major league career that began in 2004. Snell led the Pirates with 208 innings last season, and general manager Neal Huntington decided Snell was worth the risk of a multiyear contract.
March 15, 2008
Ian Snell picked up his second loss of the spring on Saturday as he allowed two runs on five hits over four innings of work against Toronto. He did have four strikeouts, which is where he holds his most value as a fantasy prospect.
March 10, 2008
Ian Snell hurled four innings on Monday and he picked up the victory as he allowed only two hits, one walk and one run on the day. Snell, who fell from 14 victories to just nine last season, is a pitcher to keep an eye on this year given the strikeouts (177) and his solid control of the strikezone 2.60 (K/BB).
March 8, 2008
The Pirates have formally extended a long-term contract offer to starter Ian Snell, according to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. No specifics of the offer were immediately known. Snell, the Pittsburgh ace, continues to grow into his role. His 2007 statline -- 3.76 ERA, 177 Ks, 1.33 WHIP and 7.66 K rate -- doesn't represented his 9-12 record. With any run support Snell would have approached 13-14 wins.
March 5, 2008
The Pirates and Ian Snell are in talks regarding a long-term contract. "I'd love to be part of this team for a long time," Snell tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I'd love to see it get done." The two sides may try to hammer out a deal before Tuesday, when the club can unilaterally sign Snell for the 2008 season.
January 13, 2008
The Pirates are in no hurry to lock Ian Snell down for a long time. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Snell recently approached the team about a long-term deal, but was told the franchise was not interested. Snell is one of the cornerstones of the Pirates staff; however, he is three years away from free agency and the team has little incentive now to give him a multi-year deal. Another solid season from him may change their mind.
