Player Notes
August 24, 2008
Felix Hernandez picked up his eighth win of the season on Saturday by hurling six innings and allowing three earned runs on on three solo home runs while striking out seven in the Mariners 8-4 win over the A's.

Our View:Hernandez has pitched much better than his 8-8 record would indicate, but he plays for one of the worst teams in baseball, so wins are difficult to come by.
August 19, 2008
Felix Hernandez took a line drive off the left ankle on Tuesday night, but he is not worried about the injury. "It hit me on the wrong spot," he tells the Seattle Times. "I'm fine."

Our View:Fantasy owners can expect Felix to make his next start.
August 19, 2008
Felix Hernandez allowed 11 hits and five runs over five innings against the White Sox on Tuesday night. The really bad news? He struck out zero. The only other time that Hernandez failed to record a strikeout was April 18, 2007, when he left a game after 0.1 innings due to a sore elbow.

Our View:We've been wondering if the season could get any lower for the Mariners. The answer is "yes." We hope there's nothing physically wrong with the ace.
August 7, 2008
Felix Hernandez held the Tampa Bay Rays to one run on four hits in eight innings as the Mariners beat the Rays 2-1.

Our View:Hernandez did not get the decision, but he certainly deserved it. Obviously, he is an asset to fantasy owners, and he has not given up more than three earned runs in an outing since May 26.
August 2, 2008
Felix Hernandez allowed two earned runs on eight hits over five innings in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Orioles at home, with two walks and six strikeouts.

Our View:He has not lasted past the sixth inning in any of his last five starts, but has 34 strikeouts over the span. He is having control issues with too many walks, but isn't allowing a high number of runs, and should remain active in all leagues.
July 23, 2008
Felix Hernandez needed 108 pitches to make it through six innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Red Sox. King Felix allowed six hits and five walks, leading to three runs (two earned).

Our View:Felix continues to tease with his stuff as the results continue to be a bit mixed. Still, he has 118 K in 125 innings and owns a 2.95 ERA, so even amidst some struggles he is dominating most hitters.
July 19, 2008
King Felix Hernandez is starting to round into form for the Mariners, tonight earning his seventh win in leading his Mariners to the 8-2 victory over Cleveland. Hernandez pitched six innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Our View:Felix moves to 7-6 on the season with a 2.95 ERA, touting five wins and just one loss over his last seven starts.
July 11, 2008
Felix Hernandez retired the first 10 batters he faced and struck out six of the first 13, but the Royals finally got to Hernandez with three two-out runs in the fifth.

Our View:The King threw 83 pitches in five innings before coming out of the game. He probably could have gone longer but the Mariners don't want to push their luck.
July 11, 2008
Felix Hernandez was activated from the DL earlier today in time to make the start tonight in Kansas City, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View:Hernandez is coming back from a sore ankle he suffered while covering home plate back on June 23. He has 93 strikeouts in 107 IP.
July 11, 2008
Felix Hernandez isn't expected to go deep in his next start (which is scheduled about two weeks from now against the Royals), and will be on a pitch count, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Manager Jim Riggleman said, "I don't know what kind of pitch count limit we'll have him on. But he hasn't pitched in a while."

Our View:His next outing will also be cut short if they notice him experiencing any degree of discomfort.
July 8, 2008
The Mariners initially believed Felix Hernandez would return to the rotation on Thursday in the final game of the series against Oakland, but he is now being pushed back to start Friday against Kansas City, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Manager Jim Riggleman said, "We just wanted to get Felix to where we were sure he was comfortable."

Our View:R.A. Dickey will now start Thursday.
July 6, 2008
Felix Hernandez, who is recovering from a sprained left ankle, has thrown a bullpen session at Safeco Field today, according to the Seattle Times.

Our View:Manager Jim Riggleman noted that Hernandez could come off the DL as soon as Tuesday, and will throw another lighter bullpen session on that day. After that, the plan is to have him return to the starting rotation on Thursday or Friday when the Mariners are on the road.
July 3, 2008
Felix Hernandez threw a side session yesterday, and Mariners manager Jim Riggleman would like to get him a start before the All-Star break, according to the Seattle Times.

Our View:Hopefully Riggleman won't rush Hernandez back. The Mariners are out of the race, so pushing it does not seem wise. Hernandez has been great for fantasy owners this year, and they'd surely take one less start of Hernandez if it means he can come back and continue to throw like he has.
July 1, 2008
Felix Hernandez not only will not make his scheduled start on Tuesday, his injured ankle will in fact force him to the DL, according to MLB.com. "He threw a few pitches and the landing foot is still not really right, and we're not going to put him out there till it is right," manager Jim Riggleman said.

Our View:So much for him making his next start. The hope is that Hernandez will be ready to go right before the All-Star game since the move was retroactive to June 24th. In the long run this might actually work to his benefit by allowing him some time to rest his young arm.
June 30, 2008
Felix Hernandez, who is dealing with a left ankle injury, is not expected to make his start on Tuesday, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Manager Jim Riggleman will mix and match a group of relievers, likely including Ryan Rowland-Smith, Roy Corcoran, Sean Green and Mark Lowe, to get through Tuesday. Riggleman added, "It may not even matter which one starts the game Tuesday. It's going to be a combination of guys. Try to see if one of them can stretch it out a little more than the others, maybe, so that we can conserve some guys for the day before and the day after that."

Our View:Jim Riggleman said he won't know a potential return date for Hernandez until he gets on a mound and throws to test his injured ankle. So far, the training staff hasn't allowed that, preferring for Hernandez to rest. A trip to the DL is not expected.
June 29, 2008
Felix Hernandez remains out due to a sore left ankle. The staff thought he might test the ankle by throwing on Sunday, but that didn't happen, the Seattle Times reports. The Mariners will likely use someone out of their bullpen to start on Tuesday. "(Ryan) Rowland-Smith would be a candidate," manager Jim Riggleman says. "(Roy) Corcoran, (Sean) Green, (Mark) Lowe. It may not really even matter which one starts. It's just going to be a combination of the guys."

Our View:Hernandez injured the ankle on June 23, and it doesn't sound like the M's are quite ready to simply put him on the DL. At this point, fantasy owners can't count on Felix to start this week, though.
June 25, 2008
Felix Hernandez will not make his next scheduled start on Sunday due to his injured ankle, according to MLB.com. "We're not counting on Felix for Sunday," interim manager Jim Riggleman said. "We are going to be realistic and are making some plans around him not pitching on Sunday." The team hopes that Erik Bedard will be able to make the start.

Our View:This seemed like how it would go from the moment he was injured despite the fact that the team talked big about King Felix making his next start. Hopefully he will avoid the DL, but that still has to be considered a possibility.
June 24, 2008
Felix Hernandez was hobbling around with a walking boot protecting his injured left ankle Tuesday, but the righty still hopes to make his next scheduled start on Sunday, according to the AP. Manager Jim Riggleman, however, isn't so sure. "Felix is OK," Riggleman said. "He thinks he'll pitch Sunday and that's his scheduled day, but I don't know that he will. Certainly I'm going to be a little more conservative than that. If we get him back a couple days after Sunday, I'd be really happy."

Our View:Riggleman said King Felix won't start Sunday if he can't play catch Friday. Erik Bedard, who has been scratched from his Wednesday start due to back spasms, could be a replacement on Sunday.
June 23, 2008
X-rays on Felix Hernandez's left ankle have come back negative. King Felix, who was injured while covering a play at the plate, expects to make his next start. "Sure, I'll be there," he said in the AP.

Our View:We're skeptical that King Felix will be able to take the ball the next time out given that he could put no weight at all on his ankle without writhing in pain. We'll continue to update his status going forward.
June 23, 2008
Felix Hernandez has been forced from his start against the Mets one out short of qualifying for the win after injuring his ankle on a play at the plate. Carlos Beltran scored on a passed ball while spiking Hernandez in the ankle/calf area. Hernandez tried to throw a few more pitches but was unable to do so and left the game in pain.

Our View:This didn't look good. The good news is that he was able to put some weight on the leg, but given that he was already dealing with some issues with his calf, we wouldn't be at all surprised if he is placed on the DL as a result of this collision.
June 18, 2008
Seattle RHP Felix Hernandez put another win on the board, supporting the Mariners' 5-4 win over the Marlins. Hernandez pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.

Our View:This gets Hernandez down to an ERA of 2.87 with a record of 6-5, posting his fourth consecutive win with five walks versus 29 strikeouts during that span.
June 11, 2008
The Mariners report RHP Felix Hernandez , despite finishing eight full innings of work in today's 2-1 win over Toronto, is suffering from pain in his right calf muscle, according to the Seattle Times.

Our View:Hernandez told reporters that he had full intentions of throwing the complete game today, but the pain in his calf was too much to take after eight. He also reports the problem is not new and has been bothering him for several weeks, yet he has not missed a start. At this time the team has announced no plans for medical testing or examination, but we will update with news as it becomes available.
June 11, 2008
Felix Hernandez continued his dominance Wednesday, giving up just one unearned run in eight innings of work against the Toronto Blue Jays. He struck out eight and walked one.

Our View:King Felix has not given up an earned run in 21 innings dating back to May 26.
June 6, 2008
Felix Hernandez had his second straight stellar performance Friday, holding the Red Sox scoreless over six innings while allowing six hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:King Felix went through a stretch where he lost five straight decisions, but he's gone 2-0 with 13 scoreless frames over his last two starts.
May 31, 2008
Felix Hernandez threw seven scoreless innings, with only two hits allowed, in Saturday's 5-0 win over the Tigers. He issued no walks with seven strikeouts.

Our View:He improved to 3-5 for the season, and bounced back well from his last poor start, when he allowed five runs against Boston on May 26.
May 26, 2008
Felix Hernandez allowed five runs on seven hits, walked five and struck out five in 7.2 innings of work. Hernandez shut down the Red Sox for seven innings before blowing up in the top of the eighth inning allowing Boston to score four times.

Our View:Hernandez, who was supposed to start on Sunday in New York but had his start pushed back a day because of a sore calf, has lost his last five decisions after starting the season 2-0.
May 26, 2008
Felix Hernandez stated that he will make his scheduled start tonight against Boston, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Manager John McLaren wants to see how Hernandez's injured right calf responds when he warms up. Hernandez is wearing an elastic brace on the calf even when he's not pitching, but said simply there's no issue, and added that he is going to pitch.

Our View:He was originally scheduled to pitch Saturday, but the team wanted to push him back a few days to make sure his calf has completely healed. We will keep you posted on his status.
May 23, 2008
Felix Hernandez was scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday, Newsday confirms. The Mariners have moved up Carlos Silva and Jarrod Washburn to work on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Our View:We are awaiting further details, but King Felix is presumably being skipped due to his sore right calf. More details when they are available.
May 22, 2008
Felix Hernandez was still having a little difficulty with his right calf before Wednesday's game, and is listed as probable to take the mound on Saturday in New York, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre said, "We're not going to have him do his regular side work today. He's feeling better, and I hope he'll start Saturday, but I'm not sure. We'll see how it goes today and maybe I'll have a better idea Thursday." Hernandez added, "It's feeling better. I think I'll pitch. I could go out and throw today. If I don't, then maybe tomorrow. I should be OK."

Our View:The calf ailment is the same problem that led Hernandez to being lifted from his last start. He is probable for Saturday, but the team is uncertain he will start. We will keep you updated on his status.
May 19, 2008
Manager John McLaren told the Seattle Times he knew Felix Hernandez wouldn't want to leave the game after the sixth inning, but he didn't give his pitcher the choice. Hernandez's calf was tight, something he said began with his warm-up pitches earlier in the game, perhaps the third inning he said. He threw 91 pitches in six innings, struck out five and walked one in the no-decision. "We'll monitor this day by day, and hopefully with a little treatment, a little rest, he's going to be fine. We'll know something more Tuesday."

Our View:Hernandez said after the game he didn't expect the tightness would cost him a start. McLaren didn't expect that would be the case either.
May 18, 2008
Felix Hernandez earned a no-decision on Sunday despite limiting the Padres to two runs over six innings. He walked one, struck out five and was only scored on when Adrian Gonzalez touched him for a 2-run home run.

Our View:King Felix dealt with some calf cramps on the afternoon, but it didn't seem to affect him adversely. At this point, we would expect him to make his next start against the Yankees.
May 13, 2008
The kid is a supreme talent, but Seattle RHP Felix Hernandez is learning that talent does not always equal success in the majors. Hernandez suffered his fourth loss of the season this evening as the Mariners fell 5-2 to the Texas Rangers, pitching six innings to give up three runs (two earned) on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:This bring Felix to four consecutive losses, giving up 16 combined earned runs over that span.
May 9, 2008
Felix Hernandez had a third straight rough start as he allowed four runs in five innings against the Rangers. Felix struggled to find the strike zone all night taking 112 pitches to record 15 outs as he walked three batters and allowed six hits on his way to his third loss.

Our View:With this outing his ERA sits at a more reasonable 3.42, though we certainly wouldn't have liked to have seen him get there this quickly (18 ER in his last 17.2 IP). Hernandez has not yet shown the ability to consistently dominate hitters from start to start, but that doesn't mean that he couldn't put it all together and run off a long streak of big-time success.
May 3, 2008
Seattle phenom Felix Hernandez suffered through rough day on the mound as the Mariners fell 6-1 to the New York Yankees. Hernandez completed just 5 2/3 innings, surrendering six runs (all earned) on 12 hits in his second loss of the season. He also surrendered three walks and pitched three strike outs, allowing one home run to OF Johnny Damon in the 6th inning with a man onboard.

Our View:This is Hernandez's second loss in as many starts, giving up four runs on six hits to the Oakland A's on April 27th.
April 27, 2008
Felix Hernandez did everything an ace does through seven innings against Oakland on Sunday, giving up just four hits and striking out 10. However, he could not escape trouble in the eighth. The Seattle right-hander walked Jack Hannahan to open the inning then Mark Ellis doubled and Daric Barton walked to load the bases. The A's Emil Brown followed with a single into left that ended Hernandez's day.

Our View:Hernandez has been terrific this season, but his eighth inning troubles raised his ERA to a more mortal 2.22. The Seattle ace is a starting option regardless of the opponent.
April 22, 2008
Felix Hernandez followed his complete game victory over the A's with another solid effort against the Orioles on Tuesday night. He held the Baltimore bats to six hits and two runs over seven innings. Hernandez walked three and struck out seven.

Our View:King Felix actually had his ERA rise from 1.47 to 1.67, but we're obviously not mad. He is looking every bit the ace that scouts and fantasy owners have drooled over and predicted in recent years.
April 22, 2008
Felix Hernandez looks to remain unbeaten when he takes the hill against the Orioles tonight, according to MLB.com. He is currently 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA, and is yet to allow more than two runs in any of his four starts.

Our View:He will duel with righty Jeremy Guthrie, who is 0-1 with a 4.38 ERA. Hernandez should remain in your lineups, and is seemingly headed for another solid start. He is also 12-3 over his previous 22 starts.
April 16, 2008
Felix Hernandez dominated the A's on Wednesday night throwing a complete game "W" at them. King Felix allowed eight hits and one walk, while picking up eight K on his way to two runs allowed (one earned).

Our View:This is what you paid the big bucks for on draft day, and there is little reason, barring injury, to think that he won't end up being one of the top-15 starters in baseball this season.
April 12, 2008
Felix Hernandez pitched his worst game of the season on Friday but still managed to record his first victory of the season. Felix allowed two home runs and nine hits in his 6.2 innings which led to four earned runs on the night. A 1.66 ERA through three starts stamps Felix as a pitcher to watch in the AL Cy Young race this season.
April 11, 2008
Felix Hernandez, who will be looking for his first win of the season tonight, has a poor track record against the Angels, according to MLB.com. Over his career against the Angels, Hernandez is 2-4 with a 4.72 ERA, while allowing 57 hits in 55 innings. And that was before they added Torii Hunter to the lineup, who is off to a strong start with the Angels. He will be in for another tough battle.
April 7, 2008
Felix Hernandez asked to be pulled after eight dominant innings on Sunday. The young ace told pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre that his arm wasn't feeling 100 percent. "You guys know me, I don't want to come out of the game," Hernandez tells the Seattle Times. "But when I feel tired, I don't want to make any mistakes. Because I felt a little bit tired. I threw a bullpen the other day. I didn't expect that, to throw eight innings after just one day's rest." The Orioles rallied in the ninth inning to beat the Mariners 3-2.
April 7, 2008
Felix Hernandez gave up five hits, struck out six, walked two and left with a 2-0 lead in the eighth inning in Sunday's heartbreaking loss to the Orioles. A bullpen without J.J. Putz couldn't hold the lead and Seattle ended up losing the game in the bottom of the ninth. The "King" was dominate in his eight inning effort, and likely should have been given the ball in the ninth.
March 27, 2008
Felix Hernandez surrendered three runs on nine hits over five innings in a no decision against San Diego on Thursday, with five strikeouts and no walks. Hernandez will anchor a strong Seattle rotation this season, which recently acquired Erik Bedard and Carlos Silva.
March 11, 2008
Seattle phenom Felix Hernandez enjoyed a fantastic outing in the Mariners' 1-4 loss to the Cubs in the Cactus League today, according to MLB.com. Hernandez tossed five innings, giving up just three hits, striking out three, and forcing two batters into double plays. It appears Hernandez is well on his way to once again working as one of the top pitching desires for fantasy owners this season, and outings like this add substantial fuel to the fire. Staying strong deep into the season should be a top priority, but today's performance gives reason for hope in Seattle and to fantasy owners alike.
March 6, 2008
Felix Hernandez allowed only two runs in four innings on Thursday on two solo HR to Ryan Braun and and Rickie Weeks of the Brewers. In fact, those were the only two hits he allowed as he punched out five batters. This could be the year that King Felix begins to fulfill his amazing potential. The possessor of a hammer curveball and 95+ mph fastball, the baby faced Hernandez won 14 games last season with 165 K, but there is talent there to better those numbers this season substantially.
