Player Notes
September 27, 2008
Ricky Nolasco lost his first decision since August 8 but pitched well against the Mets on Saturday. He had 10 strikeouts in seven innings while allowing five hits and two earned runs.

Our View:Nolasco came into his own this season. He finishes the year 15-8 with 186 strikeouts and a 3.55 ERA.
September 22, 2008
Ricky Nolasco issued three earned runs on six hits over six innings in Monday's 7-5 loss to the Reds at the Great American Ballpark, with one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:He was dealt a no decision and his record remains at 15-7. He has not lost a decision since August 8 (against the Mets), and has allowed three or less earned runs in 11 straight outings.
September 17, 2008
Ricky Nolasco earned his 15th victory of the year as he shut down the Astros in Florida on Wednesday. Houston managed two solo home runs of the young righty but those were the only runs they would score.

Our View:Nolasco continues a rather remarkable year and one that was not expected. On top of the wins, he also has 171 strikeouts in 199.1 innings pitched.
September 10, 2008
Ricky Nolasco had eight strikeouts while tossing 7.2 innings against the Phillies on Wednesday in his 14th victory of the season. Noalsco walked only one while allowing three runners to cross the plate.

Our View:Nolasco has been simply amazing this year as one of the waiver-wire pickups of the season. Besides the 14 wins, Nolasco owns a 3.56 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP marking him as one of the top-10 starters in the National League thanks in part to a run of 9-straight quality starts.
August 24, 2008
Florida's Ricky Nolasco won his 13th game of the season by pitching 7.1 innings of three-hit ball against the Diamondbacks, allowing two runs and striking out ten in the team's 5-2 win over Arizona.

Our View:Nolasco has had a great year, displaying great control with the ability to make people swing and miss. Remember his name when fantasy season rolls around next year.
August 24, 2008
Florida will try for a rebound today behind its best starting pitcher this season. RHP Ricky Nolasco tops the Marlins with 12 wins for the year to go along with a very solid 3.67 earned run average over 27 games (25 starts), according to the Miami Herald.

Our View:Nolasco was on top of his game in Tuesday's outing at San Francisco, firing a complete-game two-hitter with 11 strikeouts to register his first career shutout. The dominating performance improved the 25-year-old to 7-3 in 14 road starts this season. He's also been quite successful when facing the Diamondbacks during his three major league seasons. Nolasco has won all three of his career starts against Arizona and allowed just five runs and 15 hits in 22 1/3 innings over the course of those games. Two of those victories came earlier this year, with Nolasco surrendering just two runs and racking up 16 strikeouts over a span of 15 innings.
August 20, 2008
All the credit for tonight's 6-0 win over the Giants goes to Florida RHP Ricky Nolasco, pitching the complete game to allow just two hits, one walk, and striking out 11 batters along the way.

Our View:Nolasco has been surprisingly reliable, now sitting at 12-7 on the season with an ERA or 3.67. Over his last five starts, he's allowed a combined total of 10 earned runs with one walk and 41 strikeouts.
August 19, 2008
Ricky Nolasco, who was 5-0 before the All Star break, hasn't been the dominating arm since, but he's also faced off against some stiff competition. The right-hander gave up two runs on 10 hits in six innings to a good hitting Cardinals batting order in his last start, so tonight's task of subduing the Giants will be a cake wake in comparison.

Our View:Florida has the power bats to take advantage of the elements (wind blowing out) tonight, and they have the right pitcher on the mound to shut down the top of the Giants' order. No team is a worse fit to their home park than that of the Giants. San Fran is 17-24 at home against right-handed starters and score a mere 3.78 runs per game. Florida on the other hand is 20-19 on the road against righties and have pounded out an average of 5.46 runs per contest
August 13, 2008
Ricky Nolasco was solid in his effort against St. Louis tonight. He went six innings, and though he gave up 10 hits, he surrendered just two earned runs and struck out five.

Our View:Nolasco is certainly worthy of a roster spot on fantasy squads. He has good strikeout totals, a solid WHIP, 11 wins and an ERA that remains under 4.00.
August 8, 2008
Ricky Nolasco lasted 6.2 innings on Friday night allowing three runs, including two home runs, to the Mets. The loss was the seventh of the year for Nolasco.

Our View:Nolasco simply had no shot on this night as he was facing a locked in Oliver Perez. Nolasco continues to post quality starts with 10 in his last 12 starts meaning there have been few who have done a better job of giving their team a chance to win on a nightly basis.
August 2, 2008
Ricky Nolasco allowed three earned runs on four hits over eight innings in Saturday's 5-3 victory over the Rockies, with no walks and 13 strikeouts.

Our View:He improves to 11-6 for the season, and reached double digits in strikeouts for the second time (registered 12 against the Rays on June 15). He also snapped a four-game skid without a win.
July 28, 2008
Ricky Nolasco struck out eight in six innings against the Mets on Monday. He did not factor into the decision despite allowing just two runs.

Our View:His ERA is hovering at 3.94 and he has pitched better than many expected him to this weekend. He will be depended upon down the stretch in more big games like Monday's as the Marlins fight to get into the playoffs.
July 23, 2008
Ricky Nolasco fell to 10-6 after allowing the Braves to score five runs in five innings on Wednesday.

Our View:Nolasco had a streak of 7-straight quality starts that ended after his last start, so he is now 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in his last two trips to the hill. He has been a spectacular waiver-wire pick up so far, but he has also been outperforming his career marks by a substantial margin.
July 18, 2008
Ricky Nolasco took the loss for the Marlins in their defeat at the hands of division rival Philadelphia. Nolasco threw seven innings, allowing four runs and striking out five. He also allowed two solo home runs.

Our View:Nolaso struck out five on the night, and though this performance was just average, it should do nothing to discourage fantasy owners from putting him in their lineup when his turn in the rotation comes up again.
July 13, 2008
Florida RHP Ricky Nolasco may not have gotten the win but his arm was more than worthy, pitching six innings to allow two runs (both earned) on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Our View:Nolasco carried three consecutive wins before the no decision, with five wins over his last seven starts, going 9-1 since May 9th.
July 7, 2008
Ricky Nolasco won his fifth consecutive, and impressive decision, handcuffing San Diego to one run and five hits in eight innings of work. The right-hander allowed five hits, walked none and struck out seven in his 10th win of the season.

Our View:Nolasco has been fabulous over the last two months, and in the performance the Florida ace lowered his ERA to 3.74. He has struck out 82 hitters and walked 29 in 110.2 innings this year.
July 6, 2008
Ricky Nolasco will get the start on Friday at pitcher friendly PetCo Field. He is 7-1 with a 3.10 ERA in his last nine outings, including 4-0 with a 1.96 ERA in his last five.

Our View:Look for Nolasco to keep up his dominant stretch against a struggling Padres offense.
July 2, 2008
Ricky Nolasco earned his ninth victory of the season on Wednesday afternoon in a 4-2 victory over the Washington Nationals. The Marlins right-hander allowed two runs on three hits, walked none and struck out eight.

Our View:Nolasco's two runs both came in the first inning when he hit Aaron Boone with a lazy breaking ball, followed by a Ronnie Belliard bloop double off the end of the bat, and then a ground ball single up the middle by Paul Lo Duca. After the first inning the 25-year old dominated the Nats lineup.
June 27, 2008
Ricky Nolasco was dominant on the hill in Friday's 3-1 win over Arizona, as he only surrendered one run on six hits over eight innings, with one walk and nine strikeouts.

Our View:He improves to 8-4 with a 4.05 ERA. He is 5-1 over his last seven starts, and should remain in your mixed-league lineups while he is hot.
June 16, 2008
Ricky Nolasco has been selected as the NL Co-Player of the Week with Pirates' catcher Ryan Doumit, according to the AP. Nolasco went 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA this past week, while striking out 15 batters in 14.2 innings of work. The righty struck out a career-high 12 over 8.2 innings on Sunday, while locking up the win against the Rays.

Our View:This is the first weekly honor for Nolasco. He is 7-4 overall this season, with a 4.35 ERA and 1.36 WHIP.
June 15, 2008
Ricky Nolasco allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits over 8.2 innings in Sunday's convincing 9-3 win over the Rays, with one walk and an eye-opening 12 strikeouts. He is now 7-4 for the season.

Our View:He just missed his first complete game of the season, and his 12 strikeouts are a season-high. He allowed three runs in his last start, none earned, and is pitching very well right now. He is worth targeting if still dangling on the waiver wire.
June 10, 2008
Florida RHP Ricky Nolasco picked up his sixth win of the season, pitching six innings to allow three runs (none of which were earned) on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts to give the Marlins the 5-4 win over Philadelphia.

Our View:After a strong 4-1 May with a 3.97 ERA, Nolasco surrendered a horrendous seven earned runs against Atlanta in his first start of June. This win gets him back on track.
June 5, 2008
Ricky Nolasco allowed 11 hits and three walks on his way to permitting the Braves to scored seven times in 5.2 innings to fall to 5-4.

Our View:Nolasco had been on quite a role having allowed three of fewer runs in 5-straight starts before getting shelled tonight. As bad as the outing looked, if Chipper Jones had sat this one out Nolasco would of had a good shot at matching his recent run of success with another solid outing.
May 26, 2008
Ricky Nolasco won his third straight decision allowing three runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out only one as the Marlins put a 7-3 loss on the struggling New York Mets.

Our View:Nolasco still needs to improve his K/9 ratio (5.92) and lower his BB/9 rate (3.33) before he can be considered a mixed league option.
May 21, 2008
Ricky Nolasco held the D'Backs offense in check Wednesday, giving up just one run on three hits and two walks while striking out seven over seven innings. His ERA dropped to 4.62.

Our View:Nolasco has good stuff, so he's certainly capable of these types of outings. He's still too inconsistent, though, to be relied upon in standard mixed leagues.
May 9, 2008
Ricky Nolasco broke a personal three-game losing streak with six strong innings in Friday's 7-3 win over the Nationals. Nolasco allowed one run on four hits, walked two and struck out six.

Our View:The 25-year-old right-hander reportedly corrected some mechanical flaws in his between-game bullpen session and it showed tonight. He was smooth in his delivery and efficient in his pitch count for the most of five innings.
April 27, 2008
Ricky Nolasco pitched five innings in Sunday's win over the Brewers, allowing one run on two hits. He walked four, struck out two and hit a batter.

Our View:Nolasco's effort was an improvement over his early April struggles. The effort lowered his ERA to 5.13 on the young season.
April 17, 2008
Ricky Nolasco suffered the loss in the Marlins' 8-0 Thursday whitewashing by the Atlanta Braves. In 4.2 innings of work Nolasco allowed six runs on nine hits, walked none and struck out four.

Our View:Nolasco evened his record at 1-1 and raised his ERA to 6.46.
April 11, 2008
Ricky Nolasco will make his first start of the season tonight against Houston, according to MLB.com. He will replace Rick VandenHurk, who has been demoted and optioned to Double-A. Nolasco has notably been solid in limited action this season, as he is yet to allow a run over 5.2 innings.
April 7, 2008
Ricky Nolasco is expected to move into the rotation following the demotion of Rick VandenHurk on Sunday, the Miami Herald reports. Nolasco has pitched well in two long relief appearances this season.
March 27, 2008
Ricky Nolasco will be the fifth starter in the Marlins' rotation, according to the Sun Sentinel. He holds a 5.31 ERA over 20.1 spring innings, with 11 strikeouts and he pitched well enough to nail down the spot.
March 26, 2008
Ricky Nolasco improved his record to 2-1 with a solid performance against the Mets on Wednesday as he allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings, with two walks and two strikeouts. He didn't dominate today, but his performance was good enough to solidify his bid for a rotation spot.
March 20, 2008
Ricky Nolasco had a solid outing against the Cardinals on Thursday as he only allowed one run on two hits over five innings of work, with two walks and three strikeouts. Today's performance helped him solidify his bid for a rotation spot.
March 14, 2008
Ricky Nolasco , on pace to become a starter of significance for a hurting Florida rotation, suffered through a difficult outing in the Marlins’ 8-2 loss to the Mets in Grapefruit League action today, according to the Associated Press. Nolasco pitched two innings, surrendering seven hits and a whopping six runs with two walks and a strikeout. The Marlins may be struggling for comfort at this point as several of the team’s primary starters are suffering from injury and Nolasco was viewed as one of the few healthy-and-capable arms in the rotation. Today’s outing shows he may not be ready for the show just yet. Meanwhile, RHP prospect Burke Badenhop looked strong, allowing just three hits through four innings without a run scored. It seems like a long shot, but with the woes that have already become an issue, Badenhop may be in the mix for a starting job.
March 9, 2008
Ricky Nolasco pitched three perfect innings on Sunday afternoon, but wasn't able to finish out the forth inning in the Marlins spring loss to the Orioles. The right-hander exited after 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and no walks. He struck out four and threw 56 pitches -- 38 for strikes. Nolasco, who missed most of the 2007 campaign to an elbow injury, has the ability to contribute this year if healthy. Consider the Marlins' starter a reserve option in NL-only formats.
