Ricky Nolasco (elbow) was activated from the DL, where he had been retroactive to May 18, and optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque Wednesday, the AP reports. Fredi Gonzalez said it was likely Nolasco would be used as a starter in the minors.

The Marlins are taking a cautious approach with Ricky Nolasco (elbow), according to the team's official site. While Nolasco is doing light throwing, there is no rush on when he will return. It likely will be after the All-Star break. "He's throwing, but we're going to take it slow," GM Larry Beinfest said. "We're going to hold him back a bit. I know that he's anxious, but we want to make sure nothing lingers and he's healthy."

Ricky Nolasco will be placed back on the disabled list by the Marlins today. He's still dealing with inflammation in his right elbow, despite his initial disabled list stint, according to the Sun-Sentinel. He's made four starts since returning, but his velocity remains down and his curveball isn't on. An MRI didn't reveal anything beyond the swelling, so at this point, the Marlins will just shut him down until he shows improvement.

Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez reiterated on Thursday that Ricky Nolasco will be a starter this year after splitting his time between the rotation and bullpen in 2006, according to the AP. "It is a lot easier to know that I can concentrate on one thing that comes the most natural to me," he said. "But even if the time comes down the road where they want to push me to the bullpen, that's fine." Nolasco, who is projected as the club's No. 4 starter, was touched for four runs in five innings by the Astros Thursday. The Marlins originally toyed with the idea of giving the right-hander a look in the closer role this spring, but those plans came to a halt when it was learned that Josh Johnson would miss at least the first two months of the season.
