September 16, 2009
TheScore.com is reporting that the San Francisco Giants have activated pitcher Randy Johnson off the DL. Johnson is expected to join the Giants' bullpen for the rest of the season.

Our View:Talk about adding some depth to the bullpen! The Big Unit probably won't pitch all that much, but he is an intimidating force coming in from the pen. His fantasy value is all but gone, but he should make the Giants even better on the mound.
September 14, 2009
Randy Johnson threw a simulated game Monday, according to the Associated Press. He was facing batters for the first time since landing on the DL with a torn rotator cuff more than two months ago, and threw 53 pitches.

Our View:Johnson will next see how he feels Tuesday before determining when he may be able to return to the Giants. He would like to contribute as a reliever out of the pen for the remainder of the season.
September 12, 2009
Randy Johnson (shoulder) will throw live batting practice on Monday, and could be activated for the team's series against the Rockies that starts that day if all goes well, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:He will rejoin the team's pitching staff as a reliever. In 91.2 innings this season (17 starts), the future Hall-of-Famer has a 4.81 ERA.
August 31, 2009
FoxSports.com is reporting that Randy Johnson is hoping to pitch again for the Giants this season. Johnson hopes to throw off a mound by the end of the week, and he will try to return as a reliever for the team's playoff push.

Our View:Having the Big Unit coming out of the pen would surely strengthen the right side for the Giants down the stretch. It is not a sure thing that he will be ready to go, but if he is able to throw off the mound this week it would be a good start.
July 29, 2009
The San Jose Mercury News reports that Randy Johnson has been moved to the 60-day disabled list, but may return in September. However, should he make it back to the Giants he would likely take on a relief role and pitch out of the bullpen.

Our View:The good news is Johnson won't go under the knife (which would have likely ended his career) and placing him on the 60-day DL cleared a spot for new addition Ryan Garko. The Big Unit will rest for at least three weeks before playing catch and attempting to return. Looks like it's time to find a fantasy replacement if you have him on your roster.
July 28, 2009
The MRI on the sore shoulder of Randy Johnson showed a tear in his rotator cuff, according to the blog of Giants' beat writer Andrew Baggarly. Johnson is expected to be shut down for at least three weeks, but he hopes to return before the end of the season.

Our View:This is bad news for Johnson and the Giants, and at age 45 you have to wonder if he will be able to pitch again this season. Fantasy owners may want to hold onto Johnson in case he returns, but if you need another pitcher now it would be a good idea to get rid of him and find someone else.
July 7, 2009
300-game winner Randy Johnson is unsure how long he will be on the disabled list with his strained left shoulder, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:In addition to being a 300-game winner, Johnson is also 45. It is also his first shoulder injury. A stay on the DL longer than 15 days seems likely, and not just possible. If you are starved for pitching, keep him stashed, but if you have other injured players, he shouldn't be a priority.
July 6, 2009
The Giants placed Randy Johnson on the DL with a strained left shoulder a day after he aggravated the shoulder while swinging a bat in his start on Sunday, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View:Giants manager Bruce Bochy has stated that he hopes Johnson can return to the rotation after the allotted 15 days are up, and the injury came at a decent time with the All-Star break fast approaching. Assuming he doesn't suffer any setbacks in the meantime, the Big Unit should definitely be back with the Giants before the end of July.
July 5, 2009
Updating an earlier report, Randy Johnson is slated for an MRI after suffering a strained left shoulder during tonight's game against the Astros, according to the Mercury News.

Our View:The severity of the ailment will not be known until after the MRI. Jonathan Sanchez could replace Johnson in the rotation if forced to miss any time, or the Giants could consider Joe Martinez if they prefer to keep Sanchez in the bullpen.
July 5, 2009
Randy Johnson allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits over 3.2 innings in Sunday's 7-1 loss to the Astros at AT&T Park. He had no walks and two strikeouts, and gave up three homers.

Our View:He falls to 8-6, and had his two-game winning streak snapped. As previously stated, he was forced out of action due to an apparent left shoulder injury. We will keep you posted when Johnson's status is updated.
July 5, 2009
Randy Johnson exited Sunday's battle with Houston in the top of the fourth inning with an apparent left shoulder injury, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:He sustained the injury while taking an awkward swing at the plate. Justin Miller replaced him on the mound, and Johnson's status is yet to be updated.
June 30, 2009
Randy Johnson gave up three earned runs on four hits over 5.1 innings in Tuesday's 6-3 win at St. Louis. He had four walks and three strikeouts, and was tagged for two homers by Albert Pujols.

Our View:Johnson had a sloppy outing, but the Giants provided enough offensive support for him to collect his eighth win of the season. The Big Unit has earned a win in three of his last four starts, and should remain active in fantasy leagues.
June 30, 2009
Randy Johnson is 4-1 with a 2.57 ERA in his last seven starts, and will take the hill for the Giants tonight when they face the St. Louis Cardinals and Chris Carpenter, according to Stats.

Our View:Johnson has hit a nice stretch after looking as if he might be done in mid-May, and he's probably worth an add if not already owned in your league.
June 25, 2009
Randy Johnson enjoyed a solid outing in tonight's 6-3 win at Oakland, as he only issued one earned run on six hits over seven innings. He had one walk and fired six strikeouts.

Our View:The Big Unit notched his seventh win of the season, and No. 302 for his career. He bounced back fine after giving up four runs in his last battle against Texas.
June 20, 2009
Randy Johnson struggled in Friday's 6-4 win over the Rangers at AT&T Park, as he surrendered four earned runs on six hits over 5.2 innings. He had one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:Johnson ends the night with a no-decision, and his ERA climbs to 5.00. He is 2-1 over four starts in June, and should remain active in fantasy lineups for his next turn in the rotation.
June 13, 2009
Randy Johnson allowed two earned runs on four hits over seven innings in Saturday's 5-2 win over Oakland at AT&T Park. He had one walk and three strikeouts.

Our View:The Big Unit improves to 6-5 for the season, and collects career win No. 301.
June 8, 2009
Randy Johnson allowed three earned runs on seven hits over five innings in Monday's 4-0 loss at Florida. He issued three walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:He falls to 5-5 for the season while coming off his 300th career win. The 45-year-old vet was pitching on three days rest tonight, and suffered his first loss since May 16.
June 8, 2009
Randy Johnson will take the mound for the Giants on Monday on three days rest according to the Palm Beach Post.

Our View:Despite hurting his shoulder during his 300th victory last week, Johnson is fine and has volunteered to go on short rest after the Giants were forced to play six games in five days due to a doubleheader last Thursday. He threw only 78 pitches in his last start, so it should not be a huge deal for the 45-year-old super veteran as he goes for win number 301.
June 6, 2009
The San Jose Mercury News is reporting that Randy Johnson played long toss on Saturday and he may start Monday on short rest. Johnson has been dealing with a sore shoulder, but he felt good after the toss session.

Our View:The Giants need a starter on Monday, so if Johnson is healthy he may go on three day's rest. If not, Johnson will go Tuesday and it is likely Matt Cain will go Monday on short rest. We will keep you updated on Monday's starter.
June 5, 2009
Randy Johnson is nursing a sore shoulder, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View:It is uncertain if Johnson will be ready to go for his next scheduled start. He recorded his 300th career win Thursday against the Nationals.
June 4, 2009
Randy Johnson nailed down his 300th career win as he only allowed one run (not earned) on three hits over six innings in Thursday's 5-1 victory at Washington. He had two walks and two strikeouts.

Our View:He improves to 5-4, and won in back-to-back starts for the first time this season. He has allowed one or less earned runs in each of his last three outings as well. Johnson is the sixth lefty in MLB history to reach 300 wins.
June 3, 2009
Randy Johnson will attempt to make history Wednesday night against the Washington Nationals as he goes for his 300th win.

Our View:The Big Unit is sitting on 299 after winning his last start and has a good shot at catapulting himself into the record books against hardly a formidable opponent on Wednesday. Johnson may be the last of a dying breed and could be the final pitcher to reach the majestic 300 win club. We wish you luck Randy.
May 28, 2009
Randy Johnson won his 299th career game on Wednesday by holding the Braves to just one run on three hits over six innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter as the Giants double up on Atlanta 6-3.

Our View:The big left-hander is no longer the dominant ace and strikeout machine he once was, but he can still get the job done. His ERA is at 5.71, so he's probably best left for NL-only leagues, but he can still help in wins and strikeout categories. Keep an eye on him next week as he goes for his 300th.
May 16, 2009
Randy Johnson got roughed up by the Mets on Saturday as the Giants lost 9-6. Johnson went four innings and allowed seven runs on 11 hits while striking out three.

Our View:Johnson continues to be all or nothing, and he was nothing today. When he is good, his fantasy value is high. When he pitches like he did today, he is a fantasy killer. He is probably worth the risk at this point, but if he starts putting together more bad starts that good, it may be time to look someplace else.
May 6, 2009
Randy Johnson failed to register a single strikeout in 5.2 innings of work as the Giants were throttled 11-1 by the Rockies on Wednesday. The Big Unit surrendered seven runs on eight hits and three walks.

Our View:Johnson has been all or nothing through six starts this season. In his two wins, he has thrown 14 shutout innings while striking out 16. This was his first start since August 4, 2006 that he has failed to record a strikeout.
April 25, 2009
Randy Johnson walked seven batters in 3.1 innings of work, but the Giants still prevailed 5-3 over the Diamondbacks. He limited the damage to two runs despite also giving up three hits and striking out only two.

Our View:Johnson has only had one solid outing through four starts. With a matchup against the strikeout prone Diamondbacks (his former team), a lot more was expected of the Big Unit tonight. It may be best to leave him on your bench until he shows some semblance of consistency.
April 19, 2009
Randy Johnson allowed just one hit and no runs while striking out seven in seven innings of work as the Giants beat the Diamondbacks 2-0 on Sunday.

Our View:The Big Unit's owners certainly are relieved to see this performance as he was very shaky in his first two starts. He clearly still has impressive stuff as he has posted 19 whiffs in 15.2 innings, but he has not been as consistent with it. We still like his odds to have a good season out near the bay.
April 13, 2009
Randy Johnson was hit hard in Monday's 11-1 loss to the Dodgers. He allowed eight hits, three walks, and seven earned runs in 3.2 innings of work. The Big Unit did record five more strikeouts while suffering his second loss of the season.

Our View:Johnson has been recording his strikeouts at the high rate that is expected of him, but he has been hit hard through his first two starts with his new team.
April 4, 2009
Randy Johnson gave up only one run on four hits in five innings against the A's on Friday night.

Our View:Johnson walked two and also fanned four. He was scheduled to throw four innings, but his low pitch count allowed him to pitch the fifth. His spring ERA was a shiny 2.20.
March 18, 2009
Randy Johnson's MRI indicated that his sore left arm is fine, according to MLB.com. Skipper Bruce Bochy said, "It is all good. There is nothing structurally wrong with him."

Our View:The ailment will likely only cost him to miss one start, and he could return to the hill Monday against the Mariners. Johnson is projected to be the Giants' No. 2 starter in the rotation this season.
March 16, 2009
Randy Johnson will miss his next scheduled start due to some soreness in his biceps, according to MLB.com. The injury is not believed to be serious.

Our View:All indications are that this is normal spring training soreness. Johnson has looked pretty sharp this spring, and he should be in line for similar numbers from a season ago.
March 9, 2009
Randy Johnson hurled 3.1 scoreless innings in the Giants' exhibition win over the Athletics, according to the SF Chronicle. He said, "When I come to a new team, I feel like I need to impress them and do well to a certain extent."

Our View:The 45-year-old vet holds a 1.08 ERA over three spring outings, and is worth targeting as a flier in fantasy drafts.
March 3, 2009
Randy Johnson brought his A-game in an exhibition game against his former Diamondbacks on Tuesday, giving up two hits and one walk without a run while striking out seven in three innings of work.

Our View:Even at 45 years of age, Johnson still possesses the strikeout potential that few in the game can match. He'll be a wild-card heading into drafts this season, but he has posted a sub-4.00 ERA and over a strikeout per inning over the past two seasons.
February 27, 2009
Randy Johnson gave up just one hit and struck out two batters over two innings as he debuted with the Giants on Friday. Johnson attributed his hit-batsman and wild pitch to a "senior moment," according to the MLB.com.

Our View:Johnson has been eased into the previous two spring trainings because of back surgeries. He is on schedule this time around, and he should be able to replicate his quality numbers from a season ago.
February 25, 2009
Randy Johnson fared well during Tuesday's intrasquad game, according to the SF Chronicle. He only allowed one hit over two innings of work.

Our View:Johnson looks to be a nice late-round value pick for fantasy drafts, and should namely be a solid source for strikeouts. His ERA could also benefit from playing his home games at pitcher-friendly AT&T Park.
February 16, 2009
Randy Johnson reportedly looked great in his first bullpen session of spring training with the Giants, according to the Mercury News. He was throwing freely without any restrictions.

Our View:Johnson looks to be a nice late-round value pick for fantasy drafts, and should namely be a solid source for strikeouts. His ERA should also be helped by playing his home games at pitcher-friendly AT&T Park.
