Player Notes
November 10, 2008
Chad Cordero's labrum tear was reportedly not as severe as initially believed, according to the LA Daily News.

Our View:He should be ready for spring training. There is belief that the Angels may be interested in him if Francisco Rodriguez departs in free agency. If signed by the Angels, Cordero would compete with Scot Shields and Jose Arredondo for the closer's job.
November 9, 2008
The Rangers continue to show interest in former Nationals closer Chad Cordero who had shoulder surgery for a torn labrum this year, an injury that limited him to just 4.1 innings, according to the Rangers Official Website.

Our View:As it currently sits, Frank Francisco would appear to be the Rangers closer with C.J. Wilson also an option if he is healthy. Therefore adding a veteran arm like that of Cordero makes a lot of sense for the club, now all they have to do is to convince Cordero it's a good idea.
November 8, 2008
The Los Angeles Angels are interested in reliever Chad Cordero, who said he would not mind going somewhere to be a set-up guy instead of a closer, according to the L.A. Times.

Our View:The Angels will need a closer should they choose not to sign Francisco Rodriguez, and Cordero could be an option for that role.
November 7, 2008
In addition to the Mets, the Angels, Tigers, and Rangers are also showing interest in Chad Cordero, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Cordero could end up being a bargain closer if he doesn't have any setbacks in his recovery from shoulder surgery.
November 6, 2008
The Mets are interested in closer Chad Cordero, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View:He is coming off shoulder surgery and may not be ready for opening day, but GM Omar Minaya is interested and has ties to him as he drafted him when he worked for the Expos. He would be a solid addition to the Mets' bullpen if he proves to bounce back healthy.
October 30, 2008
Chad Cordero has refused his minor league assignment by the Nationals and has become a free agent, according to the Nationals' official site.

Our View:Cordero led the NL in saves with 47 in 2005, but missed nearly all of last year with shoulder issues. He'll likely get a roster spot on an MLB club, but probably won't start the season in a closer role.
July 25, 2008
Nationals GM Jim Bowden has apologized to reliever Chad Cordero for telling the media Cordero was going to be non-tendered at the end of the season before he had actually told Cordero, according to Nationals.com.

Our View:Bowden has an odd way of going about his business, from allegations he knew he was sending the Reds damaged goods in Gary Majewski a couple years ago, to the allegations he was skimming money off of signing bonuses to Latin American players to this nonsense. Either way, Cordero will find a home somewhere, though he may not wind up being a closer in the near future.
July 24, 2008
The Washington Post reports that the Nationals will not tender Chad Cordero at the end of the season. He had surgery to repair a torn labrum on July 8. The recovery from such a surgery often requires more than a year. And even once somebody starts throwing again, it takes another year, sometimes, for velocity to truly return.

Our View:It's curious to get this news in July, but perhaps Bowden thinks the agent will appreciate it enough to consider re-signing with the team in the offseason. Traditionally, news of such decisions will come only at the Dec. 12 deadline to tender contracts. Most often, the announcement is not an announcement at all.
June 30, 2008
According to MLB.com, the Washington Nationals have officially lost Chad Cordero for the rest of the season. His torn right labrum will cause him to have season ending surgery on his shoulder.

Our View:Now that Cordero is gone for the season it is safe to drop him in all formats, if you haven't already. Jon Rauch will continue to see the save oppurtunites for the Nats.
June 9, 2008
Chad Cordero, who is recovering from a torn shoulder muscle, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday at the Nationals' team complex in Florida, according to the Washington Post.

Our View:This is his first significant step in his recovery. He is expected to remain in Florida for around two weeks, and will then begin a rehab assignment, barring a setback. He hopes to return to Washington by late June, but will have a tough time pushing Jon Rauch from the closer's role.
June 7, 2008
Chad Cordero will travel to Florida to throw at the team's spring training complex for at least two weeks as he attempts to build up strength in his shoulder, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Cordero hopes to return to the Nationals by late June, but even when he does find his way back to the mound he will find it extremely difficult to pry the closers job from Jon Rauch.
May 26, 2008
Chad Cordero played catch without any pain on Monday, and was the first time he threw a baseball since being placed on the DL due to a torn shoulder adductor, according to MLB.com. Cordero threw 60 pitches between 45 and 60 feet without incident. The plan is for him to play catch every other day for two weeks, and he hopes to start throwing off the mound by the third week. Cordero said, "Everything felt good. I wasn't trying to blow it all out. I was a little nervous, too. When you have an injury like that, you don't know how it feels until you go out there. My first throw was kind of nerve wracking. I had no pain. The only thing I felt was not throwing for four weeks."

Our View:When Cordero returns to the Nats, which could be by the end of June, he may find himself in a closer controversy, as Jon Rauch is doing very well in the role right now.
May 10, 2008
Chad Cordero said the soreness in his shoulder decreases every day, and is starting to lift weights, along with some cardio work, according to the Washington Times. He knows he can't speed up his recovery from his torn latissimus dorsi muscle, but he said he has been tempted to do so, and added, "I watched the first two games on TV, and it was just weird, being at home watching on TV while they're somewhere else playing. I don't like it too much, so I want to get back as soon as I can."

Our View:He is expected to miss at least another month, but is making favorable progress.
May 2, 2008
The Nationals officially placed Chad Cordero on the DL Friday. He will miss 4-6 weeks with an acute tear of the latissimus dorsi. Paul Lo Duca was activated from the DL to take Cordero's spot on the roster.

Our View:Jon Rauch will continue to close while Cordero is out.
April 30, 2008
Chad Cordero has an acute tear of the latissimus dorsi muscle (which is in the back of his right shoulder), and he will be out for 4-to-6 weeks, according to the Washington Post. Manager Manny Acta stated, "The guy's probably going to be out two months. Jon Rauch is the closer, Luis Ayala the primary setup man, though others will work in that role. There is no corresponding move right now. We're fine."

Our View:Rauch is the acting closer, but he is not a favorable fantasy option, as he holds a 2.08 WHIP over 4.1 innings, and the Nationals are an NL East worst 10-17, meaning there won't be many save opportunities for him.
April 29, 2008
Chad Cordero had to leave Tuesday's game with what was initially diagnosed as a strained lat muscle, according to the AP. He is expected to need another DL stint. “It hurt really, really bad,” said Cordero. “They were talking about putting me on the DL, which I think would be good.”

Our View:It's looking more and more likely every day that Jon Rauch will be the closer for the Nats for the duration of the season.
April 26, 2008
Chad Cordero threw a scoreless inning against the Cubs on Saturday night, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Our View:With all the talk about Cordero’s shoulder problems, he is yet to allow a run this season. He could be headed back to the closer role soon, but he is certainly not a safe proposition for fantasy owners.
April 25, 2008
Chad Cordero threw from 150 feet before Friday's game against the Cubs by his own admission, he's ready to return to his pitching duties. Cordero, who has tendinitis in his right shoulder, will pitch in Saturday's game.

Our View:However, the right-hander will not pitch in the ninth inning role until he shows he's completely healthy.
April 24, 2008
Chad Cordero will play long toss on Friday and if all goes well he hopes to be able to pitch on Saturday, according to the AP.

Our View:We still don't know how much velocity that Cordero has regained in his weakened shoulder, but it would be wise to expect the team to continue to go with Joe Rauch in the closers role for at least the next little while.
April 23, 2008
Chad Cordero received positive news on Wednesday when he learned that he will not need to have surgery on his shoulder after visiting Dr. James Andrews, according to the Washington Post. Cordero was diagnosed with general weakness in his shoulder and will embark upon a plan of specialized exercises to strengthen the shoulder.

Our View:The Nationals will continue to run with Joe Rauch as their closer, and if for some reason he is on your waiver-wire, act immediately to pick him up since it is unclear how long it will take Cordero to build enough strength in his shoulder to return to his former dominating self.
April 22, 2008
Chad Cordero will have his right shoulder examined by Dr. James Andrews, according to the AP. He will undergo the examination Wednesday in Birmingham, Alabama. The righthander has appeared in just four games this season after beginning the campaign on the disabled list.

Our View:Seeing Dr. Andrews is never a good sign, and Jon Rauch will continue to handle the closer's role. We will keep you posted on Cordero's status.
April 22, 2008
Chad Cordero is reportedly close to resuming his closer's role, according to the Washington Post. His velocity is coming back and Manager Manny Acta stated, "He's pretty close. I think that maybe with the adrenaline going of a save situation he might be able to pump the ball a little bit more. He's close to being where he wanted to be. We do trust Rauch, but he's not a closer, and he hasn't been a closer here. Cordero averages 35-37 saves over the last four years. When you have to have Rauch pitch the ninth, you don't have Rauch in the eighth, which a lot of situations have gotten out of hand with us here." Cordero noted that he might need more time to warm up because of the lingering effects of the tendinitis he was suffering from.

Our View:This is favorable news, and fantasy owners should be rewarded for their patience soon.
April 21, 2008
Chad Cordero is headed in the right direction. His fastball routinely hit around 87 mph on Saturday, which is up about 5 mph from earlier in the year, the Washington Post notes. He is still short of his normal velocity of 89-91 mph. "One more outing, and if he shows that consistency, we should be able to trust him in more important situations," manager Manny Acta says.

Our View:Jon Rauch continues to close while Cordero ramps up. Fantasy owners who are holding the Nats closer should be pleased with this news.
April 19, 2008
In a less than shocking announcement, the Nationals will continue to use Jon Rauch as their close until Chad Cordero proves his shoulder is healthy, this according to MLB.com. Cordero will only be used in certain spot situations as he tries to regain the eight mph he has lost off his fastball.

Our View:Cordero should be reserved immediately, and hopefully those of you who rostered him also handcuffed him with Rauch who could emerge as the team's closer even when Cordero is healthy.
April 17, 2008
The Nationals' are concerned with closer Chad Cordero, according to the Washington Post. His warm-up pitches were gravely slow on Wednesday night. His first pitch registered at a mere 75 mph, and it took him 15 throws to top 80. His top speed was 82 mph, and the team may pull him from his closer's role until he gets his velocity up, although he did throw a scoreless inning against the Mets. Manager Manny Acta commented, "What do you do? He says he's fine. He has no pain. He's going to continue to pitch. Just right now we're going to have to pick and choose our spots, because I really don't feel right now, the way he's throwing the ball, I should trust him to save a game here."

Our View:Jon Rauch could return to the closer's role until Cordero regains his velocity.
April 16, 2008
Chad Cordero has a good track record against the Mets, according to MLB.com. He is 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA and has 14 saves over his career against New York, tonight's opposition for Washington.

Our View:He is back in action, and should be in your lineups tonight.
April 13, 2008
Chad Cordero failed to close the door in his first outing since coming off the DL. He entered a one-run game against the Braves and immediately recorded two outs. Cordero then walked a batter, served up a double, and intentionally walked another hitter before turning the ball over to Jon Rauch. Only eight of Cordero's 21 pitches were strikes.

Our View:Don't read too much into this, folks. The Nats stuck with Cordero through a rough April in 2007, and there's no reason to think his job is in serious jeopardy.
April 12, 2008
Chad Cordero was activated from the DL on Saturday and will be available to pitch on Sunday, this according to the Washington Post. In order to make room on the roster, the Nationals sent Jason Bergmann down to Triple-A.

Our View:Joe Rauch, who hasn't been very impressive in his own right, now moves back into the set up role in front of Cordero.
April 12, 2008
Chad Cordero threw a perfect inning of relief during a rehab appearance at Class-A Potomac, which was likely his final test before coming back from a right shoulder injury, according to the AP. He has been on the DL all season with shoulder tendinitis, but has made two successful rehab relief appearances this week, and GM Jim Bowden commented that Cordero is likely to be activated in time to pitch Sunday against the Braves.

Our View:This is good news for the Nats' closer. His fantasy stock will go back up.
April 8, 2008
Chad Cordero is scheduled to throw an inning in the bullpen on Wednesday, according to the Washington Post. He is recovering from shoulder tendititis and said, "It's definitely getting stronger." He is eligible to come off the DL on Friday.
April 7, 2008
Chad Cordero (shoulder) threw 35 pitches in the bullpen on Monday and the reports are that it went well, this according to the Washington Post. Cordero is nearing a return to the majors on Friday if his scheduled appearance on Wednesday goes well. Cordero owners should still keep a roster spot open for Jon Rauch as there is still the possibility of Cordero re-injuring his shoulder or eventually being traded.
April 6, 2008
Chad Cordero threw a pain-free bullpen session on Saturday, according to MLB.com. Cordero threw a bullpen session on Saturday and reported no pain in the ailing shoulder (tendinitis). It was the first time that he was on the mound since the end of spring training, and notably threw all fastballs during the session. He will have another session on Monday, and noted, "Everything felt fine. From the windup, everything was good. From the stretch, it was even better." The Nationals' closer hopes to come off the DL on Friday.
April 4, 2008
The Nationals placed Chad Cordero on the DL Friday with right shoulder tendinitis, according to the AP. It will be retroactive to March 27, making Cordero eligible to return next Friday. “We just felt this was the best for him,” manager Manny Acta said. “We didn’t want to rush him back.” Jon Rauch will serve as the team's stopper while Cordero is out.
April 3, 2008
Chad Cordero could reportedly return to action by Sunday, according to MLB.com. Cordero played catch on Thursday morning at Citizens Bank Park, throwing from 75 to 100 feet, and didn't experience any shoulder pain. If his right shoulder continues to get better, Cordero will have a bullpen session on Saturday in St. Louis and then possibly play in his first game of the new season on Sunday against the Cardinals, or Monday against the Marlins. Cordero is notably yet to play a game because of his shoulder tendinitis. He took a cortisone shot on Sunday and went through arm exercises. It seemed to have worked very well for him, and he stated, "Everything felt really good. We'll see how it is Friday. Once I got loose after the first couple of throws, it was really good. I was doing my best to let it go." This is encouraging news for the Nats' closer.
April 2, 2008
Chad Cordero (shoulder) is closer to returning to action and he hopes to play catch on Thursday to test out how the cortisone shot he received worked, this according to MLB.com. "My arm feels a lot better," Cordero said. "They just want to wait one more day to throw. I'll start throwing again [Thursday]." Joe Rauch will continue to fill the closers role until Cordero can return to the lineup.
April 2, 2008
Chad Cordero could be on the Tigers' radar, according to the Washington Examiner. A source close to the team claims that the Tigers have contacted Nats GM Jim Bowden about acquiring Cordero. The talks could heat up as the Tigers' bullpen is thinned out by injuries and closer Todd Jones is on the decline.
March 31, 2008
Chad Cordero will avoid the disabled list, for now. He received a cortisone shot in his right shoulder and will attempt to throw on Wednesday. "Right now, it doesn't really feel bad," Cordero tells the Washington Post. "I'm not really going to know until I throw on Wednesday, so hopefully everything will be all right." Jon Rauch will presumably handle the closer duties over the coming few days.
March 31, 2008
Chad Cordero is listed as day-to-day with right shoulder tendinitis, according to MLB.com. He felt sharp pain in his shoulder during batting practice before the season opener on Sunday, and quickly told the training staff. Cordero underwent a cortisone shot and will rest for a few days.
March 30, 2008
Chad Cordero was unable to come in for a save opportunity Sunday night after experiencing tightness while warming up in the bullpen. Setup man Jon Rauch picked up a blown save when a run scored on a passed ball, but he ended up with the win after Ryan Zimmerman's walk-off homer. At this point Cordero owners shouldn't be too worried, but they might want to pick up Rauch as insurance just in case.
January 11, 2008
The Nationals avoided arbitration with Chad Cordero by signing him to a one-year deal on Friday. The contract is worth $6.2 million, according to the AP. Cordero posted a 3.36 ERA with 37 saves last year. He has more job security than most closers in the game, but he has been the subject of trade rumors in the past, so his fantasy value would obviously take a huge hit if was dealt and ended up in a setup role somewhere else.
