Player Notes
August 20, 2008
Paul Maholm will not be shut down by the Pirates for the remainder of the year to save his arm, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Maholm is nearing his career high in innings pitched, which was 177.2 last season. He is currently at 168.

Our View:Fantasy owners of Maholm are glad to hear this news. He is a bit of an underrated performer, with a 3.64 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. His eight wins are not inspiring, but he could have more if the Pirates scored more runs for him.
August 18, 2008
Paul Maholm only surrendered two earned runs on five hits over seven innings in Monday's 5-2 win over the Mets, with three walks and four strikeouts. He exited the game in a 2-2 tie, giving him a no-decision.

Our View:Maholm is 1-0 over his last three starts, allowing two or less earned runs in all three outings. He is worth employing in NL-only leagues while he is pitching well.
August 18, 2008
Paul Maholm's two run victory over the Reds on Wednesday came on the heels of a career-high 10 strikeout performance against the Phillies. The Pirates lefty is 3-0 with a 2.37 ERA in his last three starts against the Mets, the Pirates opponent in the early Monday MLB affair.

Our View:In his third full season, Maholm's maturation process is peaking. His 6.4 K rate and 2.4 BB rate are overwhelmingly good for a left-hander that makes a living with his sinking fastball (52% groundball percentage). His numbers have improved each month of the season. The southpaw has a 2.70 ERA, 7.7 K rate and a 2.0 BB rate since the first week of July. The Mets have hit only 29 home runs this year against left-handed starters, 22nd in the league. Against a sinker-baller like Maholm this afternoon, runs will be hard to come by.
August 13, 2008
Pirates hurler Paul Maholm won his eighth game of the season by throwing eight innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out five in the team's 5-2 win over Cincinnati.

Our View:Four out of Maholm's last five starts have been dazzling. He has a 2.25 ERA during that time, and if you take out the one start where he gave up five earned runs, his ERA is 1.20. He is certainly an option for mixed fantasy leagues.
August 8, 2008
Paul Maholm matched Joe Blanton on Friday night by pitching seven shutout innings in a no decision against the Phillies.

Our View:Don;t look now, but Maholm appears to be a pitcher after all. Maholm had 10 K on the night, he had nine two starts ago, and has a posted a 2.83 ERA over his last 10 starts, even though he has picked up just three wins for the pathetic Pirates in that time.
August 2, 2008
Paul Maholm saw his record go to 7-7 as he took the loss in the Pirates 5-1 loss to Chicago. Maholm threw six innings and surrendered five runs on eight hits.

Our View:Maholm really has had only one bad month, and that was May. Otherwise, his numbers were solid. However, with the way Pittsburgh purged their team of good players, it isn't likely he will maintain what he had been doing.
July 27, 2008
Paul Maholm went seven innings of one-hit ball while striking out nine Padres on Sunday, though he was outdueled by Jake Peavy. In July he has a 2.43 ERA, 31 strikeouts and six walks in 37 innings.

Our View:Maholm has just one loss in 11 home starts this season. If you throw out a poor May, he actually has ace-like numbers. However, this is the same pitcher that had a 5.02 ERA in 29 starts last season. It's hard to imagine him keeping his ERA down this low (3.79) the rest of the way.
July 22, 2008
Paul Maholm was back at it on Tuesday in Houston. He allowed just five hits and one run over eight innings. It was the fifth game this season that he has gone at least eight innings.

Our View:Maholm is showing he can get the job done. He is 7-6 with an ERA of 3.92.
July 17, 2008
Paul Maholm struck out seven in six innings for the Pirates but gabe up five runs in the loss on Thursday.

Our View:Maholm is 5-1 with a 3.33 ERA at home but is just 1-4 with a 4.81 ERA on the road.
July 10, 2008
Pittsburgh lefty Paul Maholm earned his sixth win of the season tonight, helping his Pirates to a 4-2 win over the Yankees. Maholm pitched eight innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View:Maholm had suffered no-decision results in four of his last five outings but now boasts four consecutive wins in games resulting in decisions.
July 10, 2008
Paul Maholm will get the start tonight as the Pirates take on the Yankees, making up a previously rained out game. Over his last three outings, Maholm has thrown 22 innings and given up just six earned runs.

Our View:Maholm gave up three runs a few starts ago, then two runs, and in his last start he allowed just one run. So if he holds true to form, he should allow no runs tonight. Okay, so that may be wishful thinking, but Maholm's 4.05 ERA and 1.31 WHIP make him a decent option in fantasy leagues, especially NL-only leagues.
July 5, 2008
Paul Maholm pitched eight excellent innings on Saturday though he picked up a no-decision after engaging in a pitching battle with David Bush. Both pitchers went eight innings and allowed just a single run, with Maholm walking one and striking out six.

Our View:Maholm continues to bring his ERA down with his fourth straight quality start for the Pirates (4.05). He still comes with some risk as he doesn't have a true "out pitch", but he is on a solid roll right now.
June 15, 2008
Paul Maholm allowed two runs on four hits, walked three and struck out four over six innings on Sunday afternoon. Maholm handed the ball to John Grabow with a 4-2 lead and was in line to even his record to 5-5 when he departed.

Our View:Maholm has been up and down in the first two months of the season. His K Rate is under six and his BB Rate is far too high (2.40) in relation. The left-hander allows over 10 hits per nine innings and the combination of the three make him a suspect starter in anything but AL-only formats.
June 10, 2008
Pittsburgh LHP Paul Maholm escaped tonight's 7-2 trouncing from Washington with no decision, lasting 6 2/3 innings to allow four runs (all earned) on 10 hits with no walks, four strikeouts, and a whopping four home runs allowed.

Our View:Maholm has now allowed seven homers over his last five starts.
June 5, 2008
Paul Maholm pitched eight solid innings for the Pirates allowing three runs, two earned, in his fourth win of the season.

Our View:Maholm struck out only one batter in the game, though he didn't walk a batter. He continues to be one of those up and down types that can look good one night and hideous the next. Tread carefully.
May 31, 2008
Paul Maholm only allowed one run on four hits over 6.2 innings of action in Saturday's 14-4 win over St. Louis, with no walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:Maholm improved to 3-5 and lowered his ERA to 4.74. This was the fourth time that he allowed one or less runs in a start this season, but surrendered at least four runs in all five of his previous outings in May.
May 25, 2008
Pittsburgh LHP Paul Maholm put forth a strong effort in helping his Pirates earn the 6-5 win over the Chicago Cubs today. Maholm went eight innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on eight hits, surrendering just two walks versus seven strikeouts.

Our View:Maholm left with no decision and is now 0-3 in five starts this month.
May 20, 2008
Pittsburgh LHP Paul Maholm suffered his fifth loss of the season this evening as the Pirates suffered the 7-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. Maholm lasted 6 1/3 innings, surrendering four runs (all earned) on nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:This is Maholm's third loss in his last four outings with a no-decision in the mix, a span with 19 total earned runs allowed.
May 3, 2008
In a battle of offense, Pittsburgh LHP Paul Maholm suffered his first loss in three starts as the Pirates fell to the Washington Nationals 9-8. Maholm pitched just five innings, allowing seven runs (all earned) on 10 hits with three walks and just two strike outs recorded.

Our View:Maholm has struggled a bit with control over his last two starts, surrendering seven combined walks versus just four strike outs.
April 27, 2008
Paul Maholm walked four and struck out two in his third career complete game in a 5-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Our View:The left-hander improved to 2-0 in three starts at PNC Park this season, and has allowed just two runs in 20.1 innings when pitching at home.
April 27, 2008
Pittsburgh pitcher LHP Paul Maholm was the shining light in the Pirates 1-5 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies today. Maholm pitched the full nine innings, allowing just one run on just two hits allowed.

Our View:Maholm allowed four walks on the day, but his ability to limit his work to just 99 pitches through complete game deserves high praise, mixing 11 ground balls with 13 fly balls. Maholm now carries a record of 2-2, though is BB/K ratio (sitting at 6/19 coming in to today) took a slight hit.
April 22, 2008
Pittsburgh LHP Paul Maholm picked up his first win of the season as his Pirates pulled out the 2-3 win over the Florida Marlins this evening. Maholm pitched six innings, throwing 93 pitches (54 strikes) to allow just one run on four hits.

Our View:Maholm surrendered just one walk with six strike outs on the night, completing his best performance since facing the Marlins in his first start of the season on April 5th (one walk, nine strike outs in that one).
April 11, 2008
Paul Maholm rebounded from a poor first start to hold the Reds scoreless for 5.1 innings on Friday night. Maholm allowed six hits and two walks on the night as he trimmed his ERA to 4.35 over 10.1 innings. After a nine K outing the first time out, Maholm had only two on this night, though he isn't a pitcher to count on for strikeouts anyway.
April 5, 2008
Paul Maholm lasted only five innings on Saturday night as he allowed five hits, including two homers, on his way to giving up five runs. Maholm had nine strikeouts on the night, a career-high, but he gave up a grand slam to Mike Jacobs to ruin his effort. Maholm was only 10-15 last season for the Pirates with an averge of 5.32 K/9 so tonight's strikeout total was a big surprise.
April 2, 2008
Paul Maholm is set to pitch for the Pirates on Saturday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He is dealing with lower back pain but threw a favorable bullpen session on Tuesday, and is scheduled to pitch on Saturday.
March 31, 2008
Paul Maholm is making good progress on his back ailment and seems set to start his season on time, according to the Post Gazette. He threw a 50-pitch bullpen session yesterday at Turner Field, and reported no trouble from his ailing lower back that canceled his final spring appearance Friday. He noted that everything is fine and he will throw a simulated game tomorrow and make his scheduled start Saturday against Florida.
March 28, 2008
Paul Maholm has been scratched from his scheduled start Friday due to lower-back pain, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "I could've pitched today, but why risk it?" Maholm said. He'll have his first start of the regular season bumped to Saturday as a result.
March 23, 2008
Paul Maholm hurled six scoreless innings against the Yankees on Sunday, with a mere two hits allowed and a pair of strikeouts. He needs more outings like this one as he held a 10-15 mark in 2007.
March 13, 2008
Paul Maholm was nearly perfect over four innings on Thursday as he only allowed one hit, while striking out three with no walks. He needs more outing like this one as he held a 10-15 mark in 2007.
