Clint Barmes was out of the lineup Thursday because he's 3-for-23 since returning from the DL last week, according to the Rocky Mountain News. "I'm trying to help him slow himself down a little bit," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "He was a little bit better (Wednesday) night, but I have an ability to slow him down a little bit more."

Clint Barmes said he is making strides in his recovery from a broken left collarbone that has sidelined him since early June, according to the Rocky Mountain News. Barmes ran the bases and lifted light weights for the first time Tuesday since having surgery to set the fracture. He will have X-rays taken next Tuesday and could begin taking dry swings and hitting off a tee sometime next week if the injury is progressing.

He'll primarily be used in that spot against left-handed starters. "There will be spots against left-handed pitchers where we will do it," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "If you break down (Aaron Miles, the normal leadoff hitter), his game is different against left-handed pitchers."
