Braves starter John Smoltz threw seven solid innings Friday, striking out 10 while giving up just one run on one hit. His no hit bid was broken up by Ronnie Belliard of the Nationals who led off the eighth inning with a single.

The Braves placed John Smoltz on the 15-day disabled list on Friday after an MRI found inflammation, but apparently no structural damage, in his right shoulder, according to the AP. The Braves said the MRI also showed a "good" rotator cuff, and as a result Smoltz will not travel to Birmingham, Ala., to meet with Dr. James Andrews, as had been tentatively planned. The move was retroactive to July 3, meaning Smoltz will be eligible to come off the DL on July 18.

John Smoltz plans to skip the All-Star Game due to his sore shoulder, and his next start won't come until July 17, Atlanta's fifth game after the break. The Braves still have to fill his spot for the first-half finale this coming Sunday. "I think he's going to be fine," Bobby Cox told the AP. "He should be fine at the tail end of the rotation after the All-Star break."

He shook his right hand gingerly after his at-bat in the fourth and was looking at his fingers, so that may be the problem. Smoltz dislocated his right pinky May 14 while making a tag against Washington.

The deal will pay him about $14 million next season and includes an option for 2009 that can become guaranteed, as well as a club option for 2010.
