September 6, 2008
John Maine will play catch on Sunday for the first time since being placed on the DL with a bone spur in his right shoulder, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View:He hasn't been ruled out to return this season, but will move to the bullpen if he does.
August 25, 2008
Mets hurler John Maine was put on the 15-day disabled list with a bone spur in his right shoulder, according to MLB.com. He will not throw at all for two weeks before attempting to get back at it, so his return to the rotation wouldn't come until the middle of September at the earliest.

Our View:The Mets still do not know who is going to take Maine's spot in the rotation, but whoever it is won't help fantasy owners quite as much as Maine did. He was certainly solid, and though a bit too wild at times, his 7.84 K/9 helped even things out.
August 24, 2008
Less than 24 hours after a compromised performance added a layer of doubt to the immediate future of John Maine, that doubt was amplified by his manager. Jerry Manuel presented a scenario Sunday morning that had Maine being shut down for the remainder of the season because of the bone spur in his right shoulder and the pain it has caused, according to MLB.com. Manuel acknowledged a "very good possibility" exists that Maine will be replaced in the rotation. And if he is replaced, the manager said, "I would think it would be a complete shutdown."

Our View:While pitching coach Dan Warthen said Maine remains scheduled to start the Mets' first game in Miami on Friday night, he and Manuel said contingency plans are in place in case the condition of Maine's shoulder - his rotator cuff sore because of the spur - worsens. The club already had planned to have Brian Stokes start against the Marlins in place of Mike Pelfrey, whose normal day to start would be August 31st. Pelfrey, Warthen acknowledged, would benefit in two ways: getting an extra day of rest and not facing an opponent responsible for three of his eight losses this season. But if the determination is made that Maine shouldn't pitch, Stokes could replace him Friday and another pitcher - Warthen favors Nelson Figueroa because of his assortment of breaking pitches -- could be summoned to start August 31st.
August 23, 2008
John Maine was knocked around Saturday, allowing eight runs on 10 hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to Houston.

Our View:Maine's velocity has been down since returning from the DL. He got away with it in his first two starts, but obviously he didn't tonight.
August 20, 2008
Manager Jerry Manuel has decided not to pull one of his starters out of the rotation to help out the bullpen while Billy Wagner is on the shelf, according to the NY Daily News. John Maine was one of the main starters being considered to work out of the pen, but Manuel wants to keep him on regular rest while dealing with his shoulder problems.

Our View:While Wagner is out, Aaron Heilman leads the team with three saves.
August 19, 2008
John Maine fared well on Monday, but he has lost the velocity on his fastball, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. Maine had been suffering from shoulder problems, and the team concedes he may not get his velocity back this season. "There might be some good innings and bad innings. But, for the most part, he's going to be where we saw him today -- 88 to 90," said Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen.

Our View:This is somewhat troubling news for fantasy owners counting on Maine down the stretch. On one hand, this could lead to worse performances and fewer strikeouts down the road. However, if he can continue to throw as well as he did on Monday - five innings, no runs allowed - then there are no problems.
August 18, 2008
John Maine hurled five scoreless innings, with only two hits allowed, in Monday's disappointing 5-2 loss to the Pirates, with four walks and three strikeouts. He exited the game with the Mets leading 2-0, and a late Pirates' rally left him with a no-decision.

Our View:He pitched well, other than the four free passes, and poor run support prevented him from claiming his 11th win of the season. Maine is 2-0 over his last four starts, and has only allowed one earned run over his last three outings (14.1 innings).
August 18, 2008
John Maine (10-7, 3.97 ERA) allowed just one hit and struck out six is five scoreless innings in his return start from the disabled list against the soft-hitting Nats, and looked dominant in the process. The Pirates and Nats have similar peripherals, at least after Pittsburgh traded Jason Bay and Xavier Nady. The Pirates sport a .652 OPS in August, which is 29th in the league.

Our View:Maine is 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA in his last two starts against the Pirates, in those 12 innings he has 15 strikeouts.
August 13, 2008
In his first start since coming off the disabled list, Mets pitcher John Maine went five innings, allowing just one hit while walking four and striking out six and earning his tenth win of the year in New York's 12-0 victory over Washington.

Our View:Okay, so he did this against the Nationals, one of the worst offensive teams in baseball, but it was still an impressive performance. If you hadn't activated him in your fantasy team yet, don't hesitate to do so.
August 12, 2008
Mets hurler John Maine will be activated from the disabled list tomorrow, according to MetsBlog.com. Carlos Muniz will be sent down to clear a roster spot.

Our View:Earlier, Mets manager Jerry Manuel mentioned that Maine could be turned into the team's closer after he makes a start on Wednesday. The situation is still up in the air, and it will obviously affect fantasy teams. We will keep you updated on any news.
August 12, 2008
It is possible that John Maine could become the Mets closer after his start on Wednesday, according to the New York Post. It's also a possibility that Oliver Perez or Mike Pelfrey could be moved from the rotation to the 'pen, as manager Jerry Manuel has seen his relievers blow too many contests.

Our View:Manuel said he is debating putting one of the three into the closer role if Eddie Kunz, the team's newest late-inning hurler, fails to get the job done.
August 8, 2008
John Maine threw on Friday, using all his pitches, and reported no pain in his shoulder, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Unless Maine wakes up sore on Saturday, the plan is for him to return to the hill on Wednesday. The Mets, and Maine's fantasy owners, hope that his return goes off without a hitch for a guy who has only one win in his last six appearances.
August 6, 2008
John Maine, who is recovering from a strained right rotator cuff, threw another successful bullpen session Tuesday, according to the NY Daily News. His next step is to throw a simulated game on Friday at Shea Stadium.

Our View:That would put Maine on pace to pitch a week from today against Washington.
August 3, 2008
The Mets announced today RHP John Maine has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to continue soreness in his left shoulder, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View:Maine can be reactivated from the disabled list on August 13th. Mets pitching prospect Eddie Kunz was promoted from Double-A Binghamton to take Maine’s spot on the roster.
August 1, 2008
John Maine will miss his next scheduled start because of his injured shoulder, according to the Associated Press. “It’s nothing serious,” he said. “A couple days off and it will be fine.”

Our View:Maine will throw on Sunday, and if he doesn't suffer a setback there he is in line to throw next Friday against the Marlins.
July 31, 2008
John Maine will rejoin the Mets in Houston today, and his next start is likely to be skipped, according to MetsBlog.com. Maine left his last start with a sore shoulder, and an MRI revealed a mild strain in his rotator cuff.

Our View:Oliver Perez is expected to start in place of Maine Sunday, with Maine likely to take the ball sometime next week.
July 29, 2008
John Maine will undergo an MRI today after leaving Monday's start with shoulder stiffness, according to MLB.com. "You get soreness," Maine said, "but it's never felt like this before." Manager Jerry Manuel added: "If there's any, any, any pain, (he) will miss a start. (He) won't pitch (his) way through it."

Our View:It sure sounds like Maine will miss at least one outing. We'll let you know how the MRI results come out.
July 28, 2008
Updating a previous note, John Maine left Monday’s game against the Florida Marlins in the fifth inning with a stiff shoulder according to the AP.

Our View:It's unclear what the extent of the injury is but we'll keep an eye on the reports. Maine is 9-7 with a 4.20 ERA this season.
July 28, 2008
The AP reports that John Maine left Monday’s game against the Florida Marlins in the fifth inning with an undisclosed injury. Mets manager Jerry Manuel made a mound visit while Maine faced leadoff batter John Baker. After the visit, Maine gave up a home run to Baker and retired counterpart Ricky Nolasco before being removed from the game with the Mets leading, 2-1.

Our View:Not much is known about the extent of the injury but we will continue to monitor the news as it becomes available.
July 23, 2008
John Maine held on to limit the Phillies to three runs over seven innings as his record improved to 9-7 on the year.

Our View:Maine allowed two long balls in a game for the first time this season, but he still produced a quality start for the Mets. He continues to be solid though he is struggling to recapture the form that led to 15 wins and a 3.91 ERA last season.
July 18, 2008
John Maine failed to pitch five innings for the third time in his last four starts and he took the loss as New York fell 5-2 to the Reds. Maine did account for five in many other statistical categories in this game, however. He allowed five runs on five hits and five walks while striking out five.

Our View:Maine's ERA has been rising as the season has progressed, so fantasy owners may want to try another option until he gets this corrected.
July 10, 2008
John Maine threw just 4.2 innings and allowed three earned runs while walking five and striking out eight in the Mets victory over San Francisco.

Our View:Maine is not much of an innings eater, as this is the second time in his last three starts that he has gone less than five innings. He is still a pretty viable option in fantasy leagues with his eight wins and high strikeout totals.
July 7, 2008
John Maine, who is recovering from a left forearm cramp, expects to start for the Mets on Thursday, according to the NY Daily News. He indicated the ailment is just a stinger and he said he'll be fine.

Our View:This is the second time he has been bothered by cramps this season, and commented that he'll eat more bananas to avoid this from happening again.
July 5, 2008
John Maine was forced from his start on Saturday night with an injury to his non-pitching arm, an apparent forearm cramp, according to the MLB.com.

Our View:This is the second time Maine has been bothered by cramps this year (the other date was April 26th). Someone tell the guy to drink a bottle of Gatorade on days he pitches.
July 1, 2008
Mets RHP John Maine is reporting his throwing arm is doing just fine after telling the team his arm felt "dead" and "tired" on Monday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Maine proceeded with his normal running workout on Tuesday, a day after complaining of a tired arm, and told manager Jerry Manuel that he was primed for his normal bullpen session Wednesday. Maine said his schedule had been a bit rushed following his previous start, with Friday's Subway Series doubleheader skewing everyone's schedules. And perhaps that was the reason why Maine lasted only four innings Monday, pitching without his usual zip.
June 30, 2008
John Maine lasted only four innings in Monday's 7-1 loss to the Cardinals. The Mets, who have lost three of four and dropped the opener of an eight-game trip against the Central-contending Cardinals, looked like a team that has nothing to play for; this while entering the game only four games back of the NL East-leading Phillies. It wasn't that Maine pitched poorly, the Cardinals hit several seeing eye singles and bloop hits in the first four innings building an early 5-0 lead. Maine gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked three and struck out one in the loss.

Our View:Maine was visibly frustrated by the play of his teammates and committed his first error since 2005, suffering his sixth loss of the season.
June 30, 2008
John Maine is set to battle the Cardinals in St. Louis tonight, according to MLB.com. Maine is 8-5 this season, with a 3.73 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 94 innings, with 79 strikeouts.

Our View:Maine is riding a two-game winning streak, and has allowed two earned runs in each of those wins. Keep him active in your lineups.
June 28, 2008
New York manager Jerry Manueal has told reporters the Mets, facing a four-game set against the Cardinals later this week and a rotation in need of help, will be either activating an arm from Triple-A New Orleans or may seek to trade for a vetearn capable of starting, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View:The game in question will be on Tuesday, the second of the four-game set. John Maine is set to go on Monday but the spot after is vacant. We'll update as news comes forth.
June 25, 2008
John Maine held the Mariners in check for six innings holding them to five hits and two runs, resulting in his eighth victory of the season.

Our View:Maine continues to hum right along with his quietly efficient production from the hill. Maine has proven himself to be a fine #2 starter over the past year and a half and an excellent third option.
June 20, 2008
John Maine will take the mound tonight against the Rockies at Coors Field, according to MLB.com. Maine surrendered three earned runs on three hits over six innings in his previous visit to Colorado on May 25, while registering a season-high eight strikeouts.

Our View:Maine allowed a season-worst five earned runs in his last start (against Texas), and has allowed at least four earned runs in four of his last six outings.
June 15, 2008
John Maine allowed five runs on seven hits, walked none and struck out five Texas Rangers over 6.1 innings on Sunday afternoon. Maine lost his fifth game of the season against six wins.

Our View:Maine threw 105 pitches and all of the damage came via Texas long balls. Two two-run home runs (Ian Kinsler and Ramon Vazquez) and a solo shot by Milton Bradley.
June 15, 2008
When John Maine takes the mound today for the first game of the Sunday double header against the Rangers, Willie Randolph will be the Mets manager, and even if he ends it that way, there is still a strong sense that some sort of shake-up must occur, according to SI.com.

Our View:The report notes that Omar Minaya could shift his focus to jolting the coaching staff, most likely the pitching coach Rick Peterson, with the hope that such a move could inspire his sagging team.
June 4, 2008
John Maine allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits, walked one and struck out four and the Mets scored a 5-3 win over the San Francisco Giants. The Mets right-hander lowered his ERA from 3.66 to 3.47 with his one-run performance.

Our View:The victory is the sixth of the season for Maine. He continues to be the teams most consistent starter behind lefty Johan Santana.
May 30, 2008
John Maine allowed four runs on five hits over six innings in Friday's 9-5 loss to the Dodgers. He only issued one walk with six strikeouts, and ended the contest with a no decision.

Our View:Maine has now allowed 11 earned runs over his last three starts. He is still having a good month as he only allowed four total earned runs over his three starts from May 2 to May 13, however.
May 25, 2008
The Mets managed to just post just four hits on the day, leaving RHP John Maine to carry the load, a task he failed to achieve as the Mets fell 4-1 to the Colorado Rockies. Maine pitched six innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) on just three hits, posting four walks versus eight strikeouts.

Our View:Maine pitched well, but he now carries two consecutive losses after going 5-2 coming into late May.
May 20, 2008
John Maine was dealt his third loss of the season on Tuesday, as the Mets fell to Atlanta 6-1. Maine surrendered four runs on eight hits over a mere four innings of work, with three walks and two strikeouts.

Our View:Maine is now 5-3 for the season, with a 3.29 ERA. He is still enjoying a strong season, as he allowed two or less runs in each of his previous seven starts. He should bounce back fine.
May 13, 2008
John Maine improved to 5-2 on the year thanks to six innings of two hit, one run ball against the Nationals.

Our View:Maine has now lowered his ERA to 2.81 thanks to seven straight starts of two or fewer earned runs allowed marking him as one of the more consistent hurlers in the early going.
May 7, 2008
John Maine took a shutout into the ninth inning against the Dodgers before he allowed a run as he went 8.1 innings to pick up his fourth victory of the season.

Our View:Amazingly, this was the first time all season that a Mets pitcher reached the eighth inning. Maine lowered his ERA to 3.00 with this effort, and it was encouraging to see him walk only two batters in this outing after struggling with his control in some of his outings.
April 26, 2008
John Maine reportedly experienced some tightness in his right arm during the Mets 4-3 win over Atlanta on Saturday.

Our View:The injury is not considered serious and he is expected to make his next start.
April 26, 2008
John Maine evened his record to 2-2 in Saturday's 4-3 win over Atlanta, as he only surrendered two runs on three hits over five innings, with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Our View:That was his highest strikeout count of the season, and he racked up 13 strikeouts over his last two starts. He only allowed seven earned runs over his last four starts as well. He is pitching very well since allowing four runs on eight hits in his first start of the season.
April 21, 2008
John Maine held the Cubs to two runs in six innings but he still was saddled with his second loss of the season. Maine allowed five hits and two walks while striking out six.

Our View:It was nice to see Maine cut down his walk total tonight, and more nights that not an outing like this will end up in a win for Maine with the offense the Mets possess.
April 16, 2008
John Maine allowed the Nationals two runs in 6.2 innings as he held them to five hits in his first win of the year.

Our View:Maine continued a disturbing early trend of walking far too many hitters with four on the night, he now has 12 in 16.2 IP, but he continues to limit the damage as his ERA sits at 3.78.
April 5, 2008
John Maine was all over the place on Saturday as he needed 96 pitches to pick up just 12 outs. In those four innings, Maine allowed eight hits, three walks and four earned runs, though he did pick up five strikeouts, while picking up the loss. This was certainly not the type of outing Maine or his owners were looking for, and after a 5.53 ERA and 1.45 WHIP last season over his final 81.1 innings, is it time to panic a bit with Maine?
April 4, 2008
John Maine will be bumped back a day with Friday's rainout, according to the AP. He has the exact same matchup - vs. Tim Hudson and the Braves - so use him just as you would have had he started Friday.
March 30, 2008
John Maine had another spectacular outing on Saturday, shutting out the White Sox over four innings in a 3-2 win. The right-hander sent his ERA to a basement level, 1.53. Maine is expected to face the Florida Marlins and young starter Andrew Miller on Wednesday. A terrific battle of two very good young right arms.
March 24, 2008
John Maine threw six strong innings on Monday, another stellar start for the young right-hander. Maine gave up one hit, one walk and struck out seven in the six innings of work against the Orioles. On March 14 Maine pitched five scoreless innings, followed by a March 19th appearance where he gave up one run in 5.2 frames. Maine has easily been the Mets strongest starter this spring and deserves top-tier fantasy status in all formats.
March 19, 2008
John Maine threw five scoreless innings on March 14, and continues to roll as he only surrendered one run on five hits over 5.2 innings of work against Cleveland on Wednesday, with one walk and seven strikeouts. He lowered his spring ERA to 2.33 and continues to climb the fantasy rankings among starting pitchers.
March 14, 2008
John Maine worked five innings without surrendering a run in the Mets’ 8-2 victory over the Florida Marlins in the Grapefruit League today. In his most impressive outing yet, Maine gave up just three hits with one walk and six strikeouts on the day. That brings Maine to 10 consecutive innings without giving up a run. You can be the fantasy faithful are taking note as Maine’s stock rises.
March 10, 2008
John Maine is firmly planting himself as the Mets No. 2 starter in the rotation, according to Metsblog.com. He has only allowed one run in his last seven spring innings and Rich Peterson commented, "It’s hard to say what Maine is, was or will be, since he is still young…this will be his tipping point season, i suspect…that said, i do know this: i trust John Maine…is he a number two, an ace, a back end guy, who knows…those are just labels…either way, i trust him when he is on the mound."
March 9, 2008
John Maine threw four no-hit innings on Sunday, and retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced, allowing only a walk to David Newhan in the second inning. The Astros didn’t get a hit until Nick Gorneault’s two-out single off Billy Wagner in the fifth. Maine is a mixed league option regardless of format and with the smallest success this year will push a 13-15 win season.
February 28, 2008
John Maine took the loss in his first start of the spring as he allowed four hits and three runs in 1.2 innings on Thursday. Maine, like many other hurlers, is still working on little things like location and movement, so don't panic at all with this little stumble in his first outing.
February 21, 2008
John Maine faced live hitters for the first time on Thursday and he felt strong according to a report on the AP. “I wasn’t very result-oriented today. I felt good. I just wanted to get action on my pitches and I did. You know, it’s tough to go out there the first time against hitters.” Maine did a good job facing hitters last season on his way to 15 victories and 180 K. Maine isn't a top shelf starter, but he is squarely in the middle of that second level of hurlers especially considering the offensive support he should receive this season.
