The Boston Globe reports Tom Glavine got a good report from Dr. James Andrews on his elbow last week. He could sign an incentive-laden deal to return to Atlanta next season.

Our View:Glavine made only 13 starts this season and posted an ERA above 5.00, so he should be relatively cheap if he decides to return.
August 26, 2008
Tom Glavine said he is just a bit sore after having season-ending elbow surgery last week, according to the AP. The veteran is still unsure whether he'll return next season. "We've got a good five weeks here for me to rehab and get a good sense of how I'm recovering and what it looks like," Glavine said. "Then I think we will all have a better idea."

Our View:There wasn't as much damage in Glavine's elbow as initially though, as the doctor performing the surgery only had to clean out scar tissue and sew together a small gap that had formed in his tendon.
August 21, 2008
Tom Glavine's surgery on Thursday to repair a partially torn flexor tendon in his left elbow and to clean out his shoulder was a success, according to MLB.com.

Our View:"We were pleased by the report that there was not a significant injury to the elbow or shoulder that would prevent Tom from pitching in the future," Braves general manager Frank Wren said. This is great news for Glavine as his career shouldn't be over.
August 20, 2008
Tom Glavine will not need ligament replacement surgery on his left elbow, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He will still need surgery, but only to fix his torn flexor tendon. This means it is possible he could suit up next season. “Still not sure about next year but this will give me a chance,” he said.

Our View:Had Glavine needed surgery on his elbow ligament, his career would have been over. As it is, he will need about five months to recover.
August 19, 2008
Tom Glavine will undergo an MRI on Wednesday that will determine the extent of the injury to his left elbow, according to Braves.com.

Our View:If the injury is just a torn flexor tendon, Glavine will undergo surgery the next day, and he could be back in 2009. If there is ligament damage to the elbow, his career is likely over.
August 16, 2008
Tom Glavine is expected to undergo surgery to repair his left elbow, and the operation could end his career. He hopes the procedure will only result in a repair of the torn flexor tendon. If Glavine needs to replace his ligament, he would call it a career. "I think there’s a very low percentage that there might be something wrong with my ligament," he tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "And if there was, honestly, I’d leave it alone and I’d be done." Glavine will visit Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday.

Our View:Glavine's future will remain up in the air until the middle of next week. Even if the surgery is relatively minor, there's no guarantee he'll return in 2009. Glavine says he only wants to pitch for the Braves next season.
August 15, 2008
Tom Glavine has returned to the DL due to a sore elbow, according to the AP. Matt DeSalvo has been recalled from Triple-A Richmond to fill Glavine's spot on the roster.

Our View:Glavine gave up seven runs, seven hits and four walks in an 11-7 loss to the Cubs in his first game back Thursday night. The 42-year-old, who has a torn flexor tendon in his left elbow, has been hoping to avoid surgery. He experienced more pain on the mound against Chicago.
August 14, 2008
Tom Glavine was hit hard by the Chicago Cubs in Glavine's first game back after being activated from the DL. Glavine went four uneven innings, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits and four walks in the Braves 11-7 loss. He also allowed two home runs.

Our View:Glavine's time as a fantasy stalwart is over, and unless he improves drastically in a short amount of time, it's best to keep him on the waiver wire.
August 14, 2008
Tom Glavine will return to the mound for the Braves Thursday, and will be on a count of 85 pitches, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. This will mark his first game since June 10, and he’ll be testing out that partially torn flexor tendon.

Our View:He doesn't know what to expect in his first game back and will be cautious, meaning fantasy owners should wait until he proves to be effective before penciling him back into lineups.
August 5, 2008
Following the ongoing story of rehabilitation, Atlantat starter Tom Glavine will pitch for Double-A Mississippi on Saturday, when it hosts the Jacksonville Suns, according to MLB.com. Braves manager Bobby Cox wants the 42-year-old left-hander to throw somewhere in the neighborhood of 65 pitches.

Our View:Glavine was thought to be near return, and it sounds like this final minor-league start will be his last step before rejoining the Braves. We'll bring you news as it comes forth.
August 5, 2008
Tom Glavine fanned four and allowed only a single run over four innings in his first minor league rehab start Monday.

Our View:Look for Glavine to receive at least one more rehab start before returning to the Braves.
August 4, 2008
Tom Glavine is slated to begin a minor league rehab assignment Monday at Single-A Myrtle Beach, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:He hopes his partially torn flexor tendon his left elbow has strengthened enough to allow him to return to Atlanta without surgery. If his outing Monday goes favorably without a setback, he will pitch for Double-A Mississippi Saturday.
July 30, 2008
Tom Glavine was "pleasantly surprised" with his how elbow felt after throwing a three inning simulated game on Wednesday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Glavine has been on the DL since June 11 with a partially torn flexor tendon in his elbow. He will throw again on Saturday and if that goes well he will head out on a minor league rehab assignment that will probably encapsulate two starts.
July 29, 2008
Tom Glavine will throw 30-40 pitches in a simulated game on Wednesday, and if all goes well, he could be cleared to return in about two weeks, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:Glavine's usefulness in fantasy baseball has nearly expired, but if you have him on your team for sentimental reasons, we'll keep you updated.
July 28, 2008
Tom Glavine, who is recovering from a sore left elbow, threw a bullpen session Sunday, and reported no issues, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:He will take two days off, then throw a simulated game Wednesday at Turner Field. He is hoping to return to the Braves in mid-August.
July 25, 2008
Tom Glavine successfully completed a 50-pitch bullpen session on Friday, according to Braves.com. He is targeting a mid-August return date.

Our View:Glavine had not been a great fantasy option, but reports are that his shoulder has gotten stronger with this time off, so he may yet have something left in the tank upon his return.
July 22, 2008
MLB.com reports that Tom Glavine's bullpen session on Tuesday left the lefty excited. "I felt really good today," Glavine said. "It felt like I threw a lot better than I did on Saturday. ... I just feel like [the ball] felt like it came out better and I was able to put more zip on it. [The shoulder] didn't feel as cranky. All of those were good signs."

Our View:He will throw a couple more bullpen sessions and likely see a minor league rehab assignment before returning to the Braves. In 2008, he is 2-3 with a 4.85 ERA.
July 22, 2008
Tom Glavine, who is recovering from a partial tear of the flexor tendon near his left elbow, was scheduled for a bullpen session Tuesday afternoon, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:Glavine hopes to return to the Braves' rotation in mid-August, but won't know if that is a realistic goal until he throws hard off the mound to test his elbow.
July 19, 2008
Tom Glavine completed a modified bullpen session Saturday without any setbacks, according to MLB.com. It was the first time he'd thrown off a mound since landing on the DL with an elbow injury. "It went about as well as I thought it would go," Glavine said. "I actually threw pretty good, considering I hadn't pitched [since June 10]. All in all, it went pretty well."

Our View:Glavine hopes to return to the Braves' rotation by mid August. If he has any setbacks, he'll likely undergo surgery with the intention of giving himself an option to pitch again next year.
July 17, 2008
MLB.com reports that Tom Glavine remains optimistic about his left elbow and plans to throw off the bullpen mound on Saturday.

Our View:The 42-year-old left-handed pitcher believes he still needs to rebuild his arm strength to make sure he doesn't put any unnecessary strain on his shoulder. He is still weeks away.
July 9, 2008
Tom Glavine, who is trying to bounce back from a sore left elbow, threw lightly off flat ground on Tuesday and reported no issues, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. It was the first time he'd thrown in exactly four weeks since leaving a June 10 start at Wrigley Field with what was diagnosed as a partially torn flexor tendon.

Our View:The 42-year-old lefty hurler won't know if he can avoid surgery and pitch again in 2008 until after he increases the intensity of his throwing sessions, which he hopes to do during and after the All-Star break. His goal is to be pitching from the mound within two weeks, with a timetable for a possible return to the Braves' rotation to be decided based on his progress.
July 4, 2008
Tom Glavine is hopeful he can pitch again this season and will have his first throwing session on Tuesday, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. "If I start throwing and it feels good, I would love to get back on the mound in the first couple of days after the All-Star break," said Glavine

Our View:Glavine has not been very effective this year, and even if he does come back soon after the All-Star break, it is not recommended that you add him to your fantasy squad. He currently sports a 2-3 record with a 4.85 ERA.
June 24, 2008
Tom Glavine has been told to rest his sore left elbow for the next 4-6 weeks. The program includes total rest for two weeks before the veteran begins strengthening exercises, according to the AP. Glavine said two MRI exams have confirmed the ligament in the elbow is strong, but the problem is the flexor tendon, which is pulling away from the bone.

Our View:Glavine could face a difficult decision if he's not ready to take the mound by the break. He could either have surgery and be ready for 2009 or continue to rest in the hope that he could help the Braves later in the year.
June 21, 2008
Tom Glavine is hoping 4-6 weeks will be enough for his left elbow to heal on its own, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. If that time proves to be insufficient, the 42-year-old could face surgery. "It's not the kind of thing they've given me any guarantees on," said Glavine. The veteran could end up retiring instead of getting cut. "You want [your career] to end on top of your game," Glavine said. "Sometimes your body tells you it's time to go home. If this is the case, much like John [Smoltz] has said, then who am I to complain? I'm lucky I've gotten to this point in my career without going on the DL. I guess time catches up with you sooner or later."

Our View:Glavine is holding out hope that he can return this year. If he does have an operation, he said he'd consider returning to the Braves next season if they want him back.
June 13, 2008
Tom Glavine's MRI revealed that he has a small tear in his flexor tendon, according to the AP. GM Frank Wren stated that he will likely be out until around the All-Star break.

Our View:Glavine's elbow was giving him problems for a about a month, and he held a 2-3 record over 12 starts, with a 4.85 ERA and 1.57 WHIP. This is a tough loss to the Braves' rotation, but he wasn't much of a factor as a fantasy hurler.
June 13, 2008
Tom Glavine underwent an MRI on his ailing pitching elbow on Thursday, and the team is expected to disclose the results today, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View:Glavine admitted that his elbow hurt for about a month and worsened after his last two starts.
June 11, 2008
The Braves placed Tom Glavine on the DL following Tuesday's game because of a strained left elbow, according to Sports Network. Glavine has apparently been dealing with the injury for a while. "It concerns me quite a bit," Glavine said. "It's been hurting me for over a month and it's not getting any better. I think only one other time in my career, I've had an issue with my elbow."

Our View:The Braves haven't announced who will be replacing Glavine, though they could activate Mike Gonzalez a little earlier than they planned.
June 10, 2008
Atlanta LHP Tom Glavine struggled on the mound this evening and may be headed to the disabled list as a result. Glavine pitched just three innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on six hits with four walks and no strikeouts.

Our View:Glavine was forced to leave the game at that point with what is now diagnosed as a strained left elbow. The Braves expect Glavine to miss his next start and he will be evaluated over the coming days.
June 4, 2008
Tom Glavine was handed a no decision today, but fared well as he only surrendered two runs on six hits over five innings, in a 6-4 loss to Florida, with two walks and five strikeouts. One of the runs allowed came on a Hanley Ramirez homer.

Our View:That was the eighth time over 11 starts that he allowed two or less earned runs, yet he only holds a 2-2 record.
May 30, 2008
Tom Glavine only allowed two runs on five hits over six innings in Friday's 3-2 loss to Cincinnati. He issued two walks with five strikeouts, and ended the night with a no decision.

Our View:He didn't win but it was a solid outing, and he bounced back well from his previous start when he surrendered six runs in only 4.2 innings against Arizona on May 25.
May 25, 2008
Atlanta LHP Tom Glavine struggled through a rough outing on the mound today, taking the 9-3 loss to Arizona. Glavine lasted just 4 2/3 innings, surrendering six runs (all earned) on five hits with six walks versus just two strikeouts.

Our View:Two homers surrendered, including a grand slam to Arizona outfielder Eric Byrnes, did the bulk of the damage, giving Glavine his first loss of the month.
May 20, 2008
Tom Glavine picked up his second win of the season on Tuesday against his former team, the Mets. Atlanta won 6-1, and Glavine only allowed one run on three hits over six innings, with one walk and four strikeouts. The only run came on a Luis Castillo home run.

Our View:Glavine allowed 12 runs over his previous three starts and this was a strong effort as he got himself back on track.
May 14, 2008
Atlanta LHP Tom Glavine has enjoyed better evenings, but his work against the Philadelphia Phillies was enough to earn the win. Glavine pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up four runs (all earned) on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:Glavine got his first win of the season, but we doubt he's terribly happy with the effort.
May 9, 2008
Tom Glavine did what he does best on Friday night in Pittsburgh, he kept his team in the game. The left-hander allowed two runs on five hits, walked four and struck out three in seven innings of work.

Our View:Glavine lowered his ERA to 4.03 but his 1.73 WHIP didn't improve much with his four walks.
May 9, 2008
Tom Glavine will be shooting for his first win of the season when he takes the mound against the Pirates tonight, according to MLB.com. Glavine is 0-1 over five starts, with a 4.50 ERA and 1.73 WHIP.

Our View:Glavine is 22-12 with a 3.12 ERA against the Pirates in his career. Glavine was rocked for six runs in his last start (against Cincinnati) but has only allowed five earned runs in his four previous starts. He is pitching well overall, despite not having any wins, and he is worth starting tonight.
April 29, 2008
Tom Glavine showed no ill effects from his hamstring injury Tuesday, limiting the Nationals to two runs over six innings. He left with the game tied and received a no-decision in what was his first start since return from the first DL stint of his career.

Our View:The Nationals lineup doesn't exactly resemble the 1927 Yankees, but this was a positive for Glavine owners nonetheless.
April 29, 2008
The Braves activated Tom Glavine from the DL Tuesday, and the left-hander will get the ball tonight against the Nats. He has been recovering from a hamstring injury.

Our View:It's probably safe to go ahead and activate Glavine since he's going up against the weak Nationals lineup.
April 28, 2008
Tom Glavine is expected to return from the DL and could start on Tuesday, according to the AP. The 42-year-old pitcher was placed on the 15-day DL on April 19 for the first time in his 22-year career with a strained right hamstring. The move was retroactive to April 14.

Our View:Glavine will return, but held a 1.68 WHIP over 11.1 innings, with only six strikeouts, and you should leave him on your bench until he proves to be worthy of a starting spot.
April 24, 2008
Tom Glavine remains on schedule to return from the DL and start on Tuesday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He threw a side-session in the bullpen on Wednesday, one day sooner than planned. The team noted no setbacks from the session. He was on the DL for a strained right hamstring.

Our View:Glavine held a poor 1.68 WHIP over 11.1 innings before going down, and his effectiveness will remain a concern when he returns. It is best to leave him on the bench and wait it out until he proves he is worthy of a starting spot.
April 18, 2008
Tom Glavine was placed on the DL for the first time in his 22-year career on Friday due to his injured hamstring, this according to the AP.

Our View:Glavine doesn't figure to be in for a long DL stint, this move is retroactive to April 14th, so a return should come by the end of the month. Still, one has to worry about Glavine's effectiveness moving forward even if his leg is healthy.
April 16, 2008
Tom Glavine was able to throw batting practice on Wednesday as he hopes to avoid going to the DL for the first time because of a strained right hamstring, this according to the AP. “I felt good, good enough that I plan on pitching Saturday unless I have any setbacks,” he said.

Our View:Glavine may be no the hill this weekend, but it would probably be best if you left him on your bench until he proves that the injury won't effect his effectiveness on the mound.
April 15, 2008
Pitcher Tom Glavine reports his aching hamstring feels much better and the veteran lefty reported to practice with the team, did a small bit of running, and played catch, according to MLB.com.

Our View:A hamstring strain forced Glavine to leave Sunday’s game against the Nationals in the first inning and the fear of a prolonged recovery is unavoidable for pitcher at his age, yet Glavine appears to be fine and will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.
April 14, 2008
Tom Glavine's injured hamstring is no worse on Monday, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. He is reportedly going to play some catch tomorrow, and if that goes favorably, he plans to get on the bullpen mound on Wednesday. In his estimation, he’s still on track to make his next start next weekend. His turn comes up Friday against the Dodgers, but the Braves could insert a fifth starter there and give him an extra day if he needs it. Glavine stated, "I’m not going to push to stay off the DL for my own personal reasons and put our team in jeopardy. When you do what I did today and come out of the game in the first inning, it’s taxing on the bullpen. Thank God we’ve got an off day tomorrow and everybody can recover."

Our View:This is favorable news, but it remains to be seen if he will be placed on the DL.
April 13, 2008
Tom Glavine is not sure of the severity of his hamstring injury, and the team will wait until Monday or Tuesday to decide his potential DL status. "I'm not concerned that it's going to be a long time, but I really don't have anything to go on to know whether I'm going to be throwing in five days either," Glavine tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Tomorrow, if it's really sore, obviously that'd be an indication I might be in some trouble."

Our View:All we can do is wait, just like the Braves and Glavine. The club is thin on good options to help fill out the rotation, and we're a number of different names will pop up within the next day or two.
April 13, 2008
Updating an earlier report, the Braves have reported Tom Glavine left today’s start in the midst of the 1st inning with a strained right hamstring, according to the Associated Press. Glavine had faced four batters, giving up three hits and one walk, before walking off the mound in obvious pain. Glavine is listed as day-to-day.
April 13, 2008
Atlanta starter Tom Glavine has left today’s game against the Washington Nationals with an apparent injury, failing to gain a single out in the 1st inning, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View:Glavine faced four batters, each reaching base with three hits and one walk, giving Washington a 1-0 lead. After 16 pitches, Glavine walked off the mound and doubled over in pain. He was escorted off the field by team trainers. We will update with his condition when news becomes available.
April 13, 2008
Tom Glavine ,who started Sunday's game in Washington, was removed from the contest in the first inning after being visited by the team trainer. The veteran left-hander appeared to be complaining of stiffness in his back or hamstring. Glavine, who left the game and headed directly to the clubhouse, struggled early on leaving the bases loaded with no outs for his replacement, Jeff Bennett.

Our View:There is no definitive word on what the injury is yet. More on Tom Terrific when the news becomes available.
April 7, 2008
Tom Glavine limited the Rockies to three hits, three walks and no runs in 6.1 innings on Monday night. Glavine can still pitch when everything falls into place, but nights like this come around rarely for the aging vet. Don't expect this type of production from Glavine this season, and it might even be wise to start exploring trade offers already.
April 6, 2008
Tom Glavine has been bumped from his first start against the Mets today, according to SlamSports. The Braves have shuffled their starting rotation, moving John Smoltz to today's game against Johan Santana and the Mets. Manager Cox said the switch was made so Smoltz won't have to make his first start in the chill of Colorado. Glavine will take the hill when the Braves open a series against the Rockies Monday night.
April 1, 2008
Tom Glavine was dealt a no decision on Monday night against the Pirates, in his return start with the Braves, as he allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings, with two walks and three strikeouts. It wasn't a bad outing for him, but cannot be pleased as the Braves ultimately lost 12-11 in extra innings.
March 6, 2008
Tom Glavine allowed two runs and two walks on Thursday in 2.2 innings, this according to a report on MLB.com. "The first two [innings] were alright," said Glavine. "But that's typically the case down here. Any time you extend yourself another inning, that next inning gets a little tougher." Given his collapse down the stretch last season which included a 6.10 ERA and 1.52 WHIP over his final six starts, Glavine has a lot to prove this year in his return to Atlanta.
March 1, 2008
Tom Glavine, who was pitching in a Braves uniform on for the first time since 2002, registered two strikeouts and allowed one run in two innings of work in the win over the Astros. Glavine doesn't offer much in the way of strike outs, but he will stay near the mean in ERA and WHIP.
