Neal Cotts underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Cotts had only pitched 11 innings in 2009, and posted an abysmal 7.36 ERA in the process. He had been at Triple-A Iowa since May. It should be a long road recovery for the veteran lefty, and you shouldn't expect him to be making fantasy contributions again for a long time, if ever.

Neal Cotts has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa by the Cubs, according to ESPN.

Our View:Cotts fared well as a setup man with the White Sox during their World Series run in 2005, but struggled with the Cubs this season with a 7.36 ERA over 11 innings of work. The lefty specialist won't be missed in fantasy leagues.
March 19, 2009
Neal Cotts threw another shutout inning as the Cubs beat the Mariners 9-2 on Thursday. He struck out one, while allowing no hits or walks.

Our View:Cotts has given up just three hits and no runs in 6.2 innings of work this spring. The lefty has been unreliable in recent seasons, but he could prove to be an instrumental part of the Cubs success this season.
December 12, 2008
Neal Cotts signed a one-year deal with the Cubs on Friday reportedly worth $1.1 million, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Cotts shouldn't have much fantasy value in 2009, as he'll likely pitch in middle relief. He pitched 35.2 innings in 50 appearances with a 4.29 ERA.
May 29, 2008
Neal Cotts was recalled on Thursday to join the Cubs, according to the Miami Herald. To make room on the roster, Jose Ascanio was sent down.

Our View:Cotts had a rough 2007 season, but he has looked very good at Triple-A this year with a 2.00 ERA and three saves in 19 appearances with Iowa. He figures to be nothing more than another arm in the Cubs bullpen with little fantasy value.
