Player Notes
January 4, 2010
The Pirates signed free agent pitchers Neal Cotts, Brian Burres and Tyler Yates to minor league contracts on Monday.

Our View:Cotts "headlines" the group, but after posting a 7.36 ERA in 11 innings for the Cubs last season, faces an uphill battle to make the team (yes, even the Pirates).
December 12, 2009
The Chicago Cubs have non-tendered reliever Neal Cotts.

Our View:Cotts is coming off of a season that saw him allow nine runs in only 11 innings pitched, and will have some work to do to get back on a major league roster in 2010.
July 2, 2009
Neal Cotts underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Cotts had only pitched 11 innings in 2009, and posted an abysmal 7.36 ERA in the process. He had been at Triple-A Iowa since May. It should be a long road recovery for the veteran lefty, and you shouldn't expect him to be making fantasy contributions again for a long time, if ever.
May 27, 2009
Neal Cotts has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa by the Cubs, according to ESPN.

Our View:Cotts fared well as a setup man with the White Sox during their World Series run in 2005, but struggled with the Cubs this season with a 7.36 ERA over 11 innings of work. The lefty specialist won't be missed in fantasy leagues.
March 19, 2009
Neal Cotts threw another shutout inning as the Cubs beat the Mariners 9-2 on Thursday. He struck out one, while allowing no hits or walks.

Our View:Cotts has given up just three hits and no runs in 6.2 innings of work this spring. The lefty has been unreliable in recent seasons, but he could prove to be an instrumental part of the Cubs success this season.
