October 29, 2008
Cole Hamels was named the MVP of the 2008 World Series. In the fall classic Hamels was 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA and eight strikeouts.

Our View:Hanels won both the NLCS MVP and the World Series MVP. Not to bad of a postseason for the lefty.
October 27, 2008
The fifth game of the World Series was suspended after 5 and a 1/2 innings due to rain with the score tied 2-2, leaving the game to be concluded on Tuesday night at 5 PM EST. The game will pick up in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Phillies coming to bat. As a result, Cole Hamels outing will end at six innings with two runs allowed.

Our View:All the numbers from this game count as the game will simply be picked up where it left off on Tuesday. The Rays catch a bit of a break as the won't have to face Hamels, and it remains to be seen who will take the hill when the game resumes.
October 22, 2008
Cole Hamels won the NLCS MVP and continued that success in the World Series. Hamels went seven innings giving up five hits and two runs in the Phillies' 3-2 win over the Rays in Game 1 of the World Series.

Our View:Hamels has been hot in the playoffs with a record of 4-0. With the win the Phillies have taken home field advantage away from the Rays.
October 17, 2008
Cole Hamels will start Game 1 of the World Series for the Phillies though the rest of the starting rotation is not yet set, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Given that the World Series will start on Wednesday, the team can basically go with any order they would like. the smart money would likely be either Jamie Moyer or Joe Blanton in Game 2 with Brett Myers starting Game 3 in Philadelphia, but that is just speculation at the moment.
October 15, 2008
Cole Hamels was named the NLCS MVP after defeating the Dodgers for the second time in Game 5, according to the Associated Press. Hamels struck out 13 in 14 innings while producing a 1.93 ERA in the two outings against the Dodgers to become the fourth Phillie to win the honor (Manny Trillo in 1980, Gary Mathews in 1983 and Curt Schilling in 1993).

Our View:Hamels continues to show why he is a serious contender for the title of the best lefty in the game not named Johan Santana or CC Sabathia. He is clearly at the top of his game with his devastating change up and he figures to give the Phillies a great chance to win in the World Series, at least when he is on the hill.
October 9, 2008
Cole Hamels was phenomenal for his second straight Game 1 start on Thursday. He earned the win against the Dodgers while pitching seven innings, striking out eight and scattering eight base runners. He surrendered two earned runs in the game.

Our View:Hamels lived up to his billing as the best pitcher in the NLCS. He could go again in Game 4 but will more likely throw Game 4.
October 7, 2008
Cole Hamels will start Game 1 of the NLCS according to MLB.com. The lefty tossed eight innings of shutout ball in Game 1 of the NLDS while allowing just two hits and striking out nine.

Our View:Hamels faced Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers on August 23rd and earned the win. He threw seven innings and allowed just two earned runs, both on a Russell Martin home run.
October 1, 2008
Cole Hamels was outstanding in Game 1 of the NLCS at home against the Brewers. He tossed eight innings of shutout ball while allowing just two hits and striking out nine. Brad Lidge gave up an unearned run in the ninth as the Phillies took Game 1 3-1.

Our View:After striking out the side in the first, it was obvious that Hamels was "on". He used his changeup often to get strike three on Wednesday.
September 28, 2008
Cole Hamels has been slated to start Game 1 of the divisional series against the Dodgers or Brewers, according to the AP.

Our View:The Phillies' ace won 14 games this season with a 3.09 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. Manager Charlie Manuel remains undecided who will follow him in Game 2.
September 23, 2008
Cole Hamels was solid for the Phillies Tuesday, but he wasn't good enough to win. The lefty allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits and a walk while striking out seven over seven innings in a 3-2 loss to Atlanta.

Our View:Hamels now has 10 losses on the year despite a 3.09 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 196 strikeouts.
September 18, 2008
Cole Hamels (14-9) only allowed two runs on six hits Thursday night in the Phillies' 4-3 win over the Braves.

Our View:In Hamel's four starts in September, he has only allowed eight earned runs in 24.2 innings and has lowered his ERA to 3.10. With one more win Hamels will match his win total from a year ago of 15. The lefty has given fantasy owners everything they could have expected from the Phillies ace.
September 13, 2008
Cole Hamels only surrendered two earned runs on six hits over 6.1 innings in Saturday's 7-3 victory over Milwaukee, with three walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:Hamels claimed his 13th win of the season, and has allowed two or less earned runs in seven of his last eight starts.
September 12, 2008
Cole Hamels, who was supposed to start against the Brewers in Friday's postponed game, is expected to start on Saturday. The game is tentatively expected to be made up in a Sunday doubleheader.

Our View:Hamels has solidified himself as one of the best young pitchers in the game with a spectacular 2008. Although he is just 12-9, he boasts a 3.12 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and currently has 180 strikeouts in 208 innings.
September 7, 2008
Cole Hamels allowed five runs in five innings in the Phillies 6-3 loss to the Mets. The lefty saw his record fall to 12-9.

Our View:This was Hamels' worst start since the end of May. His record is deceiving, and he should have many more wins than he does. Nonetheless, fantasy owners are still reaping the rewards of his ERA, WHIP and strikeouts.
September 3, 2008
The Phillies confirmed that Cole Hamels will start on four days' rest against the Mets on Sunday, according to Phillies.mlb.com.

Our View:With the division possibly on the line, this will be a great duel between each club's best pitcher, Johan Santana vs. Cole Hamels.
September 2, 2008
Cole Hamels tossed a great game against the Washington Nationals, hurling 7.1 innings of shutout ball while striking out six.

Our View:So it was against the offensively challenged Nationals, but that still doesn't change things. He picked up his 12th win of the year (and should have a lot more), and his third decision in a row.
September 2, 2008
Cole Hamels, who would be on normal rest for Sunday's showdown with the Mets on ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball," could miss the game if he throws over 100 pitches tonight against the Nats. The Phillies team website reports, that starting Sunday and then Sept. 12 against Milwaukee would give Hamels five straight starts on four days' rest, something he hasn't done since last season.

Our View:Dubee and manager Charlie Manuel are considering Hamels and J.A. Happ. Sunday's starter is listed as "TBA," an indication that it won't be Kyle Kendrick and the staff simply won't know until after tonight's game.
September 1, 2008
The Phillies are thinking about juggling their rotation so that pitcher Cole Hamels can face the Mets on Sunday, according to Phillies.com.

Our View:Hamels is slated to go on Tuesday, and his regular turn would be Sunday, but the team has an off day, and someone would have to be skipped for Hamels to go against the Mets. It is probably a good idea for Philadelphia to start their best pitcher against the team they are battling for the division, so look for Hamels to get the green light against New York.
August 28, 2008
Cole Hamels worked seven dominating innings on Thursday night as he held the Cubs to just one run. On the night, Hamels allowed just five hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out six.

Our View:Hamels continues to post solid outings without racking up the wins (he is 11-8). Over his last 16 starts, Hamels has posted a 2.69 ERA and 0.98 WHIP as he has clearly established himself as one of the top starters in the game.
August 23, 2008
Cole Hamels allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out five over seven innings Saturday to pick up his 11th win of the year.

Our View:Aside from a mediocre May, Hamels has been nails for the Phils this year.
August 20, 2008
The Philadelphia Phillies could have lined up their rotation in order to ensure that ace Cole Hamels faced off against the New York Mets, but decided against it, according to Phillies.com. The team has an off day and could have started Hamels on regular rest Friday, but want to give him an extra day of rest instead.

Our View:Hamels has thrown over 180 innings this season, and the team wants to make sure he has enough gas left down the stretch.
August 17, 2008
It was a pitcher's duel in San Diego this evening as the Phillies put the Padres to bed, handing them the 2-1 loss. For Philly the bulk of the load was carried by LHP Cole Hamels, pitching eight innings to allow one run on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:Hamels improves to 10-8 on the season with a 3.22 ERA. This is his first win since July 3rd, suffering four no-decision finishes and three losses between then and now. He's struggled to avoid the long ball, but for the most part, he's been fairly reliable.
August 12, 2008
Cole Hamels did not figure in the decision, but he threw a solid seven innings for Philadelphia in their loss to L.A. Hamels gave up just two runs while striking out seven.

Our View:Hamels remains one of the best fantasy options on the pitching mound. He brings it all, though it would be nice if the Phillies offense could score a few more runs for him so he can gain some wins.
August 7, 2008
Cole Hamels allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits over 6.1 innings in Thursday's 3-0 loss to the Marlins, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Our View:Hamels pitched well enough to win, but his team-mates failed to offer any run support. He falls to 9-8, and is now winless in six straight starts, despite only allowing two earned runs four times over the span.
August 1, 2008
Cole Hamels permitted five runners to cross home plate, four were earned, as he fell to 9-7 for the Phillies.

Our View:Hamels was bit twice by the long ball tonight, and has given up 23 long balls on the season, which just so happens to be the reason that his ERA is as high as it is at 3.37 given his overall level of dominance.
July 26, 2008
Phillies hurler Cole Hamels lasted just 3.2 innings, giving up nine runs on six hits to the Braves. Just four of the runs were earned, as Hamels and Chase Utley each made errors contributing to the Braves nine-run fourth inning.

Our View:Hamels also walked three in the game. Just chalk this one up to being one of those days, and he remains an upper echelon fantasy option.
July 20, 2008
A pitcher's duel erupted through the battle between the Phillies and Marlins today, with Philly LHP Cole Hamels suffering from the lack of offense as his Phillies fell 3-2. Hamels pitched eight innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits with just two walks and seven strikeouts.

Our View:Both runs were allowed on solo homers, one to Jeremy Hermida, the other to Cody Ross. Hamels walked off with no decision despite the performance, a disappointing trend of late (his second no-decision in a row, his sixth since April 29th, a span that has seen Hamels go 7-3 in 16 starts).
July 13, 2008
Cole Hamels struck out eight Diamondbacks, and threw seven innings but did not factor into the decision in the Phillies 6-3 win over Arizona. He allowed 11 hits and walked only one.

Our View:Hamels is one of the best in the game, and though he is just three games over .500 on the season, he has pitched better than that record would indicate.
July 8, 2008
Cole Hamels picked up his sixth loss of the year despite giving up just three hits in seven innings. Ryan Ludwick and Rick Ankiel both hit solo home runs off of him.

Our View:Otherwise, Hamels looked sharp. He recorded eight strikeouts and walked none. Despite the 9-6 record, there are not many better young lefties in the game.
July 3, 2008
Cole Hamels was one out short of a complete game victory as the Phillies defeated the Atlanta Braves 4-1 on Thursday night. Hamels allowed one run on five hits, walked two and struck out seven.

Our View:Hamels earned his ninth win of the season and lowered his 3.38 ERA to 3.22 in the wining effort.
July 3, 2008
Cole Hamels will try to continue in July what he accomplished in June. He went at least seven innings in all five starts for the month, going 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA and striking out 34 while walking just eight.

Our View:Hamels goes against the Braves in Atlanta tonight. On the road this season he is 3-1 with a 4.21 ERA, but has held opponents to a .224 batting average. Hamels is one of the best in the National League, and should be in fantasy lineups tonight.
June 28, 2008
Left-hander Cole Hamels struck out eight over seven innings and the Phillies held off two late surges by the Texas sluggers for a 11-10 win on Saturday night.

Our View:Hamels walked two in his eighth win of the season.
June 28, 2008
The Phillies will send LHP Cole Hamels to the mound today as they face the Texas Rangers in interleague action, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:This past Sunday Hamels suffered a tough 3-2 loss to Anaheim. In the setback the lefty made one mistake, giving up a three-run homer to Casey Kotchman. Despite the long ball, Hamels tossed seven innings, scattering six hits, while striking out four batters. The 24-year-old has struggled on the road this year, posting a 2-1 ledger and a 4.01 ERA in six starts away from Citizen Bank Ball Park.
June 22, 2008
Philadelphia LHP Cole Hamels put forth a respectable effort on the mound this afternoon but his team failed to support his cause, falling 3-2 to the Angels. Hamels pitched seven innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:Hamels now sits at 7-5 on the season with a 3.27 ERA. He came in riding a two-game win streak with a no-decision in between, allowing just four earned runs through those efforts. He missed the win today, but his arm remains strong and a bit of support from the offense would go a long way.
June 16, 2008
Cole Hamels held the mighty Red Sox lineup to just two runs, on back-to-back solo home runs to Dustin Pedroia and J.D. Drew, in his seventh victory of the season. Hamels struck out five while allowing seven hits over seven innings.

Our View:Hamels continues to throw quality start after quality start with no sign of letting up. We are always concerned about his ability to stay healthy and throw 200 innings, but as long as he is healthy he should continue to function as a top-20 hurler.
June 16, 2008
Cole Hamels will be on the hill tonight when the Phillies host the Red Sox, according to MLB.com. Hamels is 6-4 this season with a 3.27 ERA and strong 1.02 WHIP and this will be his first meeting with Boston.

Our View:Hamels racked up a season-high 13 strikeouts in his last start (against Florida), and has allowed two or less earned runs in four of his last six contests. The Phillies' ace is a solid start tonight at home, despite a tough game against Boston.
June 11, 2008
Cole Hamels struck out 13 Marlins batters and allowed only two runs, both solo home runs by Jorge Cantu, over eight innings in a no-decision.

Our View:This outing was wasted by Tom Gordon who allowed a grand slam to Dan Uggla to destroy the efforts of the Phillies ace. The only concern with Hamels is if his body, and specifically his arm, can handle the 200-innings he is on pace for.
June 5, 2008
Cole Hamels hurled a complete game shutout in Thursday's 5-0 win over Cincinnati, with three walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:That was his second complete game shutout of the season, and he improves to 6-4 with a 3.36 ERA.
May 31, 2008
Cole Hamels was rocked for seven runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings in Saturday's 7-3 loss to the Marlins, with one walk and four strikeouts. He gave up three home runs in the game.

Our View:Hamels falls to 5-4 with a 3.73 ERA over 12 starts. He surrendered six runs in his previous outing, and four runs in two other starts in May. He hurled two scoreless efforts in the month as well, and has been erratic from start to start.
May 31, 2008
Philadelphia will send LHP Cole Hamels to the mound today in their battle with the first-place Florida Marlins, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View:Hamels struggled through rough times in his last outing, surrendering six runs on seven hits to the Astros in just four innings of work. The 2007 All-Star had not yielded a single run over his previous two outings. Hamels fired a four-hitter for his first career shutout in a May 15 win over Atlanta, then racked up 11 strikeouts over seven scoreless frames in a no- decision at Washington five days later. Hamels is just 2-2 with a 4.13 ERA over four career starts against the Marlins.
May 20, 2008
It was the Phillies emerging with the 1-0 win over Washington this evening, but LHP Cole Hamels failed to garner the win. Hamels pitched seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing just four hits with two walks and an amazing 11 strikeouts.

Our View:Hamels entered tonight going 3-0 over his last four starts, going seven or more inning in each with 44 strikeouts versus 19 walks. He may not have gotten the win, but Hamels now sits as one of the most dominating arms of the moment in professional baseball.
May 16, 2008
With all the young guys signing contract extensions, is it time for the Phillies to lock up Cole Hamels? It won't happen anytime soon, GM Pat Gillick tells the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Right now, it isn't going to happen," Gillick said. "If at some point, if [Hamels is] performing to the level, you're going to have to talk multiyear at some point."

Our View:Hamels is under the Phillies' control until 2012, so the team isn't in any rush.
May 15, 2008
Cole Hamels twirled a brilliant complete game shutout of the Braves on Thursday night for the Phillies. Hamels allowed four hits and two walks while striking out six.

Our View:The only thing holding Hamels back from being a Cy Young candidate this year will be his health as he has continued dominating hitters just as he did last year.
May 10, 2008
Cole Hamels lasted long enough to receive top of the eighth inning run support and win his fourth game of the year Friday night in San Francisco. The Phillies left-hander allowed four runs on six hits, walked three and struck out seven in Philadelphia's 7-4 victory over the Giants.

Our View:Hamel wasn't sharp but found a way to fight through a normally light-hitting Giants lineup to give his team seven solid innings.
April 23, 2008
Cole Hamels had a season best 11 K but he also allowed a season worst five runs to pick up his third loss of the season.

Our View:Hamels was really hurt but the two home runs he gave up to Prince Fielder, but at least he still piled up the K. Dont' worry about tonight. As long as he stays healthy Hamels will be one of the top starters in the league.
April 23, 2008
Rising star Cole Hamels is set to take the hill tonight on the road against Milwaukee, according to MLB.com. Hamels is 2-2 with a strong 1.86 ERA over 29 innings, with 19 strikeouts, and a 1.00 WHIP. He is also 1-0 lifetime against the Brewers, with a 3.60 ERA.

Our View:He allowed five runs in his last start (against the Mets), but his fantasy stock will continue to rise if he bounces back favorably tonight. If he does get rocked again, you could use it to your advantage by trying to acquire the young ace for a reduced price.
April 18, 2008
Cole Hamels fell to 2-2 on the season as he allowed five runs, four earned, on Friday night. Hamels stuck out only four Mets on the night as he allowed eight hits and three BB.

Our View:Hamels owns a 1.86 ERA through four starts for the Phillies, but he just didn't have his best stuff tonight.
April 12, 2008
Cole Hamels totally dominated the Cubs allowing just one hit and no runs over seven innings on Saturday night.

Our View:Hamels, who posses some of the filthiest stuff in baseball, has been on his game and then some early on with a 0.82 ERA and 0.82 WHIP through three starts. If he can stay healthy, always a huge if, he will likely challenge for the NL Cy Young.
April 12, 2008
Cole Hamels is set to start against the Cubs today, a team that he has fared very well against, according to MLB.com. Hamels notably went 2-0 with a 1.80 over 15 innings against the Cubs in 2007, with only three runs allowed.

Our View:He is off to a strong start with a 1-1 record and 1.20 ERA, and he should hold the upper hand in this match-up.
April 7, 2008
Cole Hamels picked up his first win of the season on Monday. He worked seven innings against the Reds and allowed five hits and two runs (one earned). Hamels walked three and struck out four. The victory this time almost makes up for his disappointing loss when he tossed a gem in his season debut.
April 2, 2008
Cole Hamels was at times spectacular on Wednesday night as he needed only 103 pitches to make it through eight innings against the Nationals. Hamels did pick up his first loss of the season despite allowing just one run and five hits, while he punched out six National batters. If Hamels can stay healthy and pitch 200-innings for the first time in his life, he could very well threaten for the Cy Young award in the National League.
March 18, 2008
Cole Hamels returned to Grapefruit League action on Tuesday. He retired the first 14 batters he faced before Evan Longoria jacked a homer in the fifth inning. That was the lone run Hamels allowed, and he struck out seven batters over six innings. Hamels appears to be over his bout with the flu and ready for the regular season to get underway.
March 13, 2008
Cole Hamels' next start is in question, this according to the Philadelphia Daily News. The lefthander had been scheduled to pitch in a minor league game Wednesday, but was scratched after coming down with the flu. Manuel said he'll pitch again whenever he is healthy.
March 12, 2008
Cole Hamels was scratched from a minor league start Wednesday due to the flu, according to the AP. Unless Hamels comes down with pneumonia or something, he'll be just fine.
March 8, 2008
Cole Hamels threw his second straight stiff of the spring on Friday, allowing three runs on five hits in three innings of work. The Phillies left-hander has a 12.80 Grapefruit League earned run average, according to Philly.com, but Hamel feels right physically. "If I feel physically right, even if the results aren't what I want, then I feel like I've accomplished something," he said. "My velocity won't be back until the end [of the exhibition schedule]. I kind of got used to this last year with all the home runs (nine in 20 innings) and runs (6.10 ERA) I gave up. But after the success I had last season, I know it's just part of the routine." Fantasy owners who are counting on Hamels repeating his 2007 numbers (15-5, 3.39 ERA with 177 Ks) would like to see more before camp breaks.
March 3, 2008
Cole Hamels surrendered two home runs in his first start of the spring as the Phillies and Yanks ended Sunday's game in a 7-7 tie. Hamels, gave up long-balls to Jason Giambi in the first inning and Jason Lane in the second. Hamels was around the plate throwing 31 of his 44 pitches for strikes. This performance came a day after Philadelphia chose to renew his contract after the two sides were unable to agree to terms before Sunday's team-imposed deadline.
March 2, 2008
Cole Hamels is unhappy that the Phillies chose to renew his contract after the two sides were unable to agree to terms before Sunday's team-imposed deadline. Hamels will make in the neighborhood of $490,000 to $500,000. He requested $750,000. "I'm not angry," Hamels said on MLB.com. "I just feel a little... I can't think of a good word. I'm a little surprised. It's about respect, and when people don't show that to you, you're caught off guard. I thought it was a low blow." There's a chance that this could affect future negotiations between the southpaw and the team, but we're betting this ends up being a non-story.
