Player Notes
July 2, 2008
Adam Loewen was effective in his first game back from rehabbing his elbow. He held Kansas City scoreless over two innings while giving up two hits, walking one, and striking out another.

Our View:Loewen is the lefty specialist in the bullpen for the Orioles and he should see plenty of action. Furthermore, he may become an emergency starter down the line if one of the rotation guys come up sore.
June 30, 2008
Adam Loewen has been activated from the DL, according to the AP. He has recovered from left elbow soreness. The team placed Jamie Walker on the 15-day DL, as an adjoining move.

Our View:Loewen is going to work out of the bullpen instead of the rotation, and is not worth targeting in standard leagues.
June 18, 2008
Adam Loewen will move up to Double-A and work for the Bowie club on Wednesday night, the Baltimore Sun reports. The southpaw allowed one hit and no runs, struck out five, and walked none over three relief appearances for High-A Frederick. He is on the DL due to a sore left elbow.

Our View:The Orioles may not wait long to move Loewen up to the majors, but he is slated to stick in relief for the rest of this season.
June 10, 2008
Adam Loewen worked one inning for High-A Frederick on Tuesday night. He retired the side in order and threw 11 of his 14 pitches for strikes and was clocked at 90-92 mph, the Baltimore Sun reports. Loewen is on the DL due to a sore left elbow.

Our View:The Orioles will use Loewen in relief for the rest of this season, as they just want him to stay healthy after missing most of 2007 due to a fracture in his left elbow. The 24-year-old southpaw probably won't have any fantasy value until he competes for a rotation spot next spring.
June 9, 2008
Adam Loewen, who is recovering from left elbow soreness, is scheduled to begin his rehab assignment on Tuesday at Single-A Frederick, according to the Baltimore Sun. He did not experience any setbacks in his two-inning simulated game on Saturday. Manager Dave Trembley commented, "It's all scripted out. Toward the end of his rehab, he'll pitch back-to-back days and have a day off. We'll start him out in the beginning of an inning with nobody on, and as he gets going toward the end of his rehab, we'll bring him in the game in the middle of an inning with guys on base. Toward the end, he'll have to throw two innings. He won't throw more than two innings. I don't really see him being a long reliever."

Our View:The Orioles are not contenders, and will protect Loewen's prized left arm by keeping him in the bullpen, and out of the rotation, when he returns.
June 8, 2008
Adam Loewen is hoping to be back with the Orioles by the end of the month, but he'll do so as a reliever. "Somebody told me that Loewen has not ruled out coming back here and starting in 2008. I can tell you right now Loewen will not start for the rest of the season," manager Dave Trembley said on MLB.com. "We're trying to cover for him and not put a lot of undue stress and strain on his arm. Mentally, he doesn't have to prepare himself to go out there and throw nine innings or 115 pitches." Loewen is coming back from soreness in his pitching elbow.

Our View:This is the smart move by the O's, as the team is going nowhere and they want to protect Loewen's talented left arm.
June 5, 2008
Adam Loewen, who is recovering from left elbow soreness, is scheduled to return to the Orioles at the end of June, according to the Baltimore Sun. Manager Dave Trembley said, "I would think he is going to have to pitch for a couple weeks, at least a couple weeks in the minors. He'll probably start, so he can warm up and go out there and build himself up. I wouldn't expect him until the end of June. I think that is realistic."

Our View:The team also mentioned that he may initially return as a reliever. It depends on how well he does in his rehab stint, but the move would put less wear and tear on his tender left elbow.
June 3, 2008
Adam Loewen, who is recovering from left elbow soreness, threw live batting practice on Monday, according to the Baltimore Sun. He is then scheduled to pitch an inning at extended spring training on Thursday, before going on a rehab assignment.

Our View:Loewen held a 7.85 ERA and 1.91 WHIP over 18.1 innings this season, and isn't worth waiting for as a fantasy hurler.
June 2, 2008
Adam Loewen could begin a rehab assignment soon and return before the All-Star break. "Hopefully by the end of the month, he'll be ready to go," manager Dave Trembley informs MLB.com. "Maybe sooner." Loewen underwent surgery in 2007 to repair a stress fracture in his left elbow, and he has had soreness in the joint this year. The southpaw was scheduled to throw batting practice on Monday and Wednesday.

Our View:We're still like Loewen a little bit in keeper fantasy leagues, but we're not expecting much this year. We'll just be happy if he returns and shows some signs of his 2006 self.
May 23, 2008
Adam Loewen threw off a mound Friday for the first time since going on the DL with left elbow soreness, according to the Baltimore Sun. The lefty threw 25 pitches - all fastballs - and said his arm felt great. He's slated to pitch in an extended spring training game on June 4.

Our View:This is good news for those that are waiting on Loewen. He should be back before the All-Star break if all goes well.
May 6, 2008
Adam Loewen's exam by Dr. James Andrews revealed no structural damage in Loewen's pitching arm, according to the Washington Post. Managed Dave Trembley and team president Andy McPhail were relieved that Loewen isn't expected to miss more than eight weeks. McPhail said, "Obviously, we're pleased that there isn't anything that is demonstrably wrong. That's good news. We'll get Adam started in Sarasota and get him back on track." Trembley added, "I'm glad for him and I'm glad for our team and the organization because he's a central figure in what we're trying to do here and he's one of the guys that we're trying to do it with."

Our View:Loewen is headed to the team's spring training facility in Sarasota, Florida, where he will spend two or three weeks on a throwing program.
May 5, 2008
Adam Loewen will get his ailing elbow checked out by Dr. James Andrews today, according to the Baltimore Sun. This is an important step in determining when Loewen can return to the mound. Andrews inserted a screw into Loewen's left elbow in June to repair a stress fracture. It has continued to give Loewen problems, leading to the club's decision last month to place him on the DL. A bone scan, magnetic resonance imaging and CT scan taken on the ailing area have not revealed any new problems, so Loewen and the club are optimistic about today's examination. Manager Dave Trembley said, "I think it would be good for everybody. I think he felt a lot better about the situation when the bone scan came back the way that it did. I'm sure he's probably anxious to get going on a throwing program again and see what he has to do in order to get back out there again."

Our View:The team will be in no hurry to rush him back to the diamond. He held a 7.85 ERA and 1.91 WHIP over four starts before landing on the DL.
April 30, 2008
The Baltimore Orioles report LHP Adam Loewen's bone scan of his injured left elbow has come back and is clear of concern, but the team has scheduled the hurler for a follow-up exam by noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews who will be charged with making the final determination on the pitcher's status, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Loewen missed the bulk of last season after undergoing surgery (performed by Dr. Andrews) on the elbow and the Orioles are being more than cautious with his return. Manager Dave Trembley is encouraged by the results but states the team is in no hurry to rush Loewen back to the mound. "I'm encouraged that the bone scan came back clear, that's good," said Trembley. "They put a screw in the kid's elbow... that's more of a rod than a screw... I wouldn't expect that he's going to pitch when his 15-day DL is done. It's going to be longer than the 15 days." Loewen made only six starts last season before the stress fracture was found and fixed. He has made four starts this season, going 0-1 with an ERA of 7.85.
April 29, 2008
Adam Loewen underwent a bone scan, CT scan and MRI on his left elbow Monday. Although the results of the exams aren't known yet, Loewen definitely won't be ready to return when his 15 days are up, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:Hopefully Loewen won't get the worst news. We'll update you on the results of his tests.
April 28, 2008
Adam Loewen is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his injured left elbow on Monday, according to MLB.com. The team will know more pertaining to the extent of his injury tonight, and how long he will need to spend time on the DL. Manager Dave Trembley stated, "Loewen's getting an MRI and a CAT scan and will see team physician Dr. John Wilckens this afternoon. I won't have anything until I get back to Baltimore tomorrow."

Our View:The team wants to be patient with his ailment, and are projected to promote Garrett Olsen from Triple-A Norfolk to cover Loewen's spot in the rotation (on Wednesday). We will keep you posted on Loewen's status, as well as who is officially going to fill his spot while he is out.
April 25, 2008
The Orioles have placed Adam Loewen on the 15-day DL due to left forearm soreness, the Sports Network reports. Infielder Eider Torres was called up to take his roster spot.

Our View:We're not certain who will take Loewen's spot in the rotation, but Matt Albers is a pretty good guess. We'll update this situation when more is known.
April 25, 2008
Adam Loewen, who was removed from last night's game against the Mariners in the third inning due to forearm discomfort in his throwing arm, claims it is unrelated to the stress fracture in his elbow that required surgery last June, according to the Baltimore Sun. Loewen commented, "It's starting to get worse in the general area of my forearm. It just starts off as a dull pain and gets sharper as I get on. I'll probably get it looked at. Hopefully, it's nothing serious, I don't think it is." He added, "There's been a couple of things that have bothered me before and are starting to go away. When that starts to happen and something else comes up, I maybe over-compensated for something and that's why I'm getting all these different types of pains. I really don't think it's anything serious, but it would be nice to step on the mound and feel 100 percent."

Our View:He's expected to return to Baltimore today to see team doctors. He holds a 7.85 ERA and a 1.91 WHIP over four rough starts.
April 25, 2008
Adam Loewen had another rough outing on Thursday night as he permitted five runs on four hits and three walks in just 2.2 innings against the Mariners.

Our View:Face it, Loewen has the stuff but he just isn't ready for a prime time role yet. His ERA sits at 7.85 and he has walked 15 batters in 18.1 innings, and the most he should be looked at for at this point is to be taking up space at the end of your bench.
April 23, 2008
Adam Loewen isn't hurt, according to the Baltimore Sun. His scheduled start on Tuesday was pushed back until tomorrow to give him more time to work on his poor fastball command, and not due to an injury. Manager Dave Trembley commented, "I may not go anymore than that with him until at least the second half of the season. Just the fact that he is coming off surgery, that's all. Sooner or later with the schedule falling like it is, we're not going to be able to get him extra days. I'm not saying that's set in stone right now. I'm just saying that's something I'm thinking about doing. Loewen is fine. I think some success would do wonders for him and the ability to go deep into the game and cut down on his walks. That's what he needs to do."

Our View:Loewen had a screw inserted into his left elbow to repair a stress fracture in June, but as Trembley states, he is fine. Loewen holds a 6.32 ERA over 15.2 innings, with a 1.79 WHIP, but he has good stuff, and will get on track at some point this season.
April 16, 2008
Adam Loewen picked up the loss on Wednesday night as he allowed three runs in six innings to the White Sox. Loewen allowed only six hits on the night, but he also walked five batters.

Our View:Loewen has dominating stuff, but the walks are just killing him in the early going (6.89 BB/9). Unless he throws more strikes, success will elude him.
April 5, 2008
Adam Loewen was pulled after throwing only 4.2 innings thanks to allowing seven base runners, four runs and two home runs on the night. Loewen's performance tonight wasn't much different than what Loewen showed most of spring, and no matter how much talent he has, it will be difficult to keep running him out there every fifth day if he can't find the strike zone. Heck, the Orioles already have a starter who cant throw strikes and his name is Daniel Cabrera.
March 24, 2008
Adam Loewen had a great performance on Monday for the Orioles as he allowed only one run and two hits in five innings despite entering the game with a 12.27 ERA this spring. The Orioles still are planning on Loewen being a part of their starting rotation, but after struggling so mightily this spring, this outing may be the one that actually earns him that spot.
March 19, 2008
Adam Loewen returned to game action on Wednesday, and it wasn't pretty. The southpaw serves up four hits, four walks, and four runs over 1.2 innings against the Cardinals. Loewen was previously scratched from a start due to a sore shoulder, and he's losing fantasy value by the day.
March 17, 2008
Adam Loewen got through another bullpen session Sunday without any problems with his sore shoulder, according to the Baltimore Sun. "It was great," manager Dave Trembley said. "Alan Dunn said that's the best he's seen him throw all spring. I talked to Loewen afterward. He feels tremendous. He'll start on Wednesday. That's real good news for everybody." Loewen was scratched from a start last week because he couldn't get the joint loose, but it looks like he's going to be fine.
March 15, 2008
Adam Loewen was able to test his sore shoulder out by playing catch Friday, and he reported no discomfort in the joint, according to the Baltimore Sun. Loewen, who is dealing with tendinitis in his shoulder, is expected to throw a side session Sunday and start Wednesday's game. He missed his last start as a precaution but should be fine going forward.
March 13, 2008
The Orioles confirmed on Thursday afternoon that Adam Loewen will miss his next scheduled start due to a left shoulder injury, notes the team website. Baltimore manager Dave Trembley said it was purely a precautionary move. "He told me if this was the regular season, he'd put me out there," Loewen said of Trembley. "But since I have the extra start -- since I was first out there and [scheduled to throw] six when everyone else was throwing five -- [he thought] it would be wise to skip this one. Let another guy show us what he's got, and then I'd just fill in the next time at the same pitch count." Loewen's injury doesn't appear to be serious, but staff has little choice but to be careful with the current mix of starting option. The few that they have.
March 12, 2008
Adam Loewen will likely miss Friday's start with discomfort in his left shoulder, according to the Baltimore Sun. The O's are hoping it's nothing more than mild tendinitis. "Nobody is too concerned," said Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail. "It might back him up a start. That's where we are at the present time." Loewen, who is coming back from elbow surgery, is expected to hold down a spot in the Baltimore rotation. He could be a sleeper if he proves to be healthy.
March 9, 2008
Starter Adam Loewen, who is out of minor league options, gave up three runs in the third inning of Sunday's 7-3 win over the Marlins. Loewen was forced to the showers after 2 2/3 innings, having allowed four hits and three earned runs. He walked three, struck out two and threw 55 pitches -- 32 for strikes. Outside of AL-only formats, Loewen shouldn't be a fantasy consideration.
March 1, 2008
Adam Loewen is out of minor league options, which means he can't be sent down without passing through waivers, according to MLB.com. The Orioles plan to keep him in their rotation and let him learn on the fly, even if that costs them in the short term. "All I know is he has good stuff, and all young pitchers go through trying times," added pitching coach Rick Kranitz. "I'm sure he'll have a few ups and downs, but as long as [he learns] from it -- especially [the] mistakes -- he'll be fine." Loewen has plenty of talent and upside, but he missed most of last season due to a stress fracture in his elbow, so he'll have to prove he can stay healthy before proving he can mature into a quality fantasy option.
February 28, 2008
Adam Loewen couldn't escape the second inning in Thursday's Grapefruit league opener and was removed with the bases loaded and the score tied, 1-1. Loewen only threw 16 strikes among his 39 pitches. Ten of his last 11 pitches were balls. According to the Baltimore Sun, he was missing his spots by a lot. Loewen didn't allow a hit, but he walked four - including all three batters he faced in the second - and struck out two. He was charged with three runs on the day.
February 21, 2008
Adam Loewen, who tossed 25 pitches to hitters on Thursday, threw without a hitch and showed no ill from an elbow injury that ended his 2007 season. "It was a big deal to get back on the mound and face hitters," Loewen said a half-hour after his mound session. "It feels good to get through it and feel good. I felt really comfortable and that was the biggest thing." Before his elbow broke down last year, the left-hander went 2-0 with a 3.56 ERA in six starts. Loewen, who hasn't pitched in a game since May 1 of last year, is expected to be ready for Opening Day barring a setback.

Our View: took another step in his return from a stress fracture in his left elbow on Thursday, when he threw 25 pitches with hitters standing in the batter's box.
February 10, 2008
After the Eric Bedard trade the Orioles have only Jeremy Guthrie, Adam Loewen and Daniel Cabrera penciled into the starting rotation; but Adam Loewen is coming off elbow surgery and continues to progress in his rehab, according to the Baltimore Sun. The left-hander said Friday that his arm is getting stronger and he feels as if he never had surgery. Before his elbow broke down last year, Loewen went 2-0 with a 3.56 ERA in six starts. With any semblance of a productive or promising spring, Loewen will garner some attention in AL-only formats.
January 18, 2008
The O's inked Adam Loewen to a one-year deal Friday, avoiding arbitration. Financial terms weren't disclosed. Loewen made just six starts last year before undergoing elbow surgery. He's expected to be ready to pitch in spring training.
January 15, 2008
The Orioles training staff examined Adam Loewen, recovering from elbow surgery, on Monday, and the lefty's shoulder and elbow checked out fine, according to the Baltimore Sun. Executive vice president Mike Flanagan mentioned that Loewen is in "great shape" and just needs to continue throwing to build up arm strength. Barring a setback, the O's expect the youngster to be ready for spring training.
January 10, 2008
Adam Loewen's recovery is going well, and he expects to be ready for spring training. The lefty missed the last five months of the 2007 season after undergoing surgery to repair a stress fracture in his elbow. Loewen is dealing with tightness in his shoulder, but the O's think it's nothing more than the normal discomfort that comes from a long layoff. "Every time I throw, it gets looser and looser," Loewen told the Baltimore Sun. "I'm not saying it hurts. I haven't taken seven months off since I was a little kid, so naturally, it's going to be tight." As far as his elbow is concerned, Loewen says it feels great. "When I throw, I don't feel a thing," he said. "It's like it's nonexistent."
