Rangers general manager Jon Daniels tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that C.J. Wilson is currently the best bet to open 2008 as the closer. Wilson picked up 12 saves and posted a 3.03 ERA in 2007. However, he had some shaky moments late in 2007 and walks too many guys, and we're still considering this situation to be fairly wide open heading into March.

Despite the fact that C.J. Wilson has picked up the last two saves for the Rangers, manager Ron Washington re-iterated on Thursday that he plans to use both Wilson and Joaquin Benoit to close games, according to the Dallas Morning News. That said, Washington is at least open to the idea of Wilson claiming the job full-time. "The past couple of days, he's found himself there and done the job," Washington said. "If he keeps finding himself there, one day you might have to say, 'There's the guy.' He's certainly got the stuff, but it's not that easy to come in the ninth and do that, and we don't want to rush him into that."

With Eric Gagne traded to the Red Sox and Akinori Otsuka sidelined, C.J. Wilson picked up the save for the Rangers on Tuesday night, retiring the final five batters of the game, according to the Dallas Morning News. Manager Ron Washington said Joaquin Benoit was ready to pitch in the ninth inning had Wilson allowed any runners. Washington has yet to designate a closer, but it still seems as though Benoit is the best bet to handle the majority of the closing opportunities until Otsuka returns.
