C.J. Wilson is going to have season-ending surgery on his ailing left elbow this week, according to MLB.com. Wilson made the decision after further tests revealed he was dealing with both bone spurs and bone chips in the elbow. There are no muscular issues that would keep Wilson out for an extended period of time, meaning he should be ready for Spring Training. Wilson said, "I'm really looking forward to next year, that's the biggest thing. This year I have been handicapped the whole time. I probably should have had this done at the end of last year. I drove the wheels off that car and now it's time to get a new one."

Our View:Wilson racked up 24 saves this season, but held a 13.00 ERA over his last 11 outings before landing on the DL. Eddie Guardado is currently working as the closer in Texas.
August 8, 2008
C.J. Wilson has a bone spur in his elbow but if he can pitch through the discomfort he should be able to put off surgery until the off-season, according to the Dallas Morning News. "I don't think it's a black-or-white situation and that's why we are going to have more discussion," assistant GM Thad Levine said. "Both doctors felt with an injection and rehab, he could pitch again this season.

Our View:Given Wilson's struggles of late, if there is any concern over his long term outlook we would figure that Wilson might be shut down. Still, this medical report seems to say that he could return in a couple of weeks, though his effectiveness may still be hampered.
August 6, 2008
C.J. Wilson is bound for the 15-day DL due to bone spurs in his left elbow, according to the AP. Wilson will visit with Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles to discuss the possibility of surgery. The Rangers will activate Joaquin Benoit from the DL to take Wilson's place on the roster.

Our View:Wilson nailed down 24 saves with Texas, but held a poor 6.02 ERA and 1.64 WHIP. Eddie Guardado is expected to take over the closer's role while Wilson is on the shelf.
August 4, 2008
C.J. Wilson will remain the Texas Rangers closer, despite his recent struggles and the fact he may not be completely healthy, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Our View:Wilson has been erratic as the Rangers closer, and sports a 5.28 ERA and 1.59 WHIP. The situation could change at anytime should Wilson continue to falter.
August 1, 2008
C.J. Wilson had another in a series of unsuccessful outings as he allowed two runs, though the Rangers offense bailed him out in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn Wilson his second victory of the season.

Our View:Wilson owns a 5.28 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP, numbers that dwarf those of Eddie Guardado (3.24 ERA, 0.96 WHIP). Kind of makes you wonder why Wilson continues to close doesn't it?
July 23, 2008
C.J. Wilson blew his third save of the season as his ERA climbed to 5.06 on the season after allowing a home run to Carlos Quentin.

Our View:So you think it's time for the Rangers to turn to Eddie Guardado? We might have agreed with you before seeing his line (0.2 IP, three hits, one walk, four ER). The Rangers pen simply doesn't have too many reliable arms, though Wilson would appear to be "the man" at the end of the game for the time being.
July 8, 2008
C.J. Wilson gave up a hit and two walks but no runs in the ninth to earn his 22nd save of the season on Tuesday.

Our View:It's a bit amazing that Wilson only has endured two losses this season. He carries a heavy 1.43 WHIP and 4.58 ERA, yet seems to get three outs before the winning run nearly every time. He may be a good sell high candidate to an owner desperate for saves.
July 5, 2008
C.J. Wilson struck out the side on Saturday on his way to earning his 20th save of the season for the Rangers.

Our View:Wilson has six saves in his last seven appearances during which time he has permitted but a single run thanks to just two walks against eight strikeouts. Like most pitchers, if he throws strikes, he figures to have success.
June 25, 2008
C.J. Wilson allowed a hit and a walk on Wednesday night though neither runner crossed the plate in his 16th save of the season.

Our View:Wilson continues to allow about a runner and a half an inning, though this was his second straight clean outing for a save after two rough outings. For those of you keeping track, Eddie Guardado worked a scoreless eighth in the win.
June 22, 2008
C.J. Wilson earned his 15th save of the season on Sunday as he held the Nationals without a run.

Our View:The Rangers clearly want Wilson to hold off Eddie Guardado for the closers role, and today's outing was a positive outing for Wilson who had been scored on in three of his previous four outings. Guardado hurled a scoreless inning to lower his ERA to 3.55, but Wilson is still in the drivers season.
June 20, 2008
C.J. Wilson should be the closer for the Rangers if you ask Nolan Ryan, according to the Dallas Morning News. "I think if you look at our organization, he's our closer," Ryan said. "I think you have to continue to run him out there. C.J. is the one most suited to be our closer at this point in time."

Our View:While all of that might be true, it can't be argued that Eddie Guardado, who has been serving as the set up man, is pitching better of late. The team clearly wants Wilson to establish himself, but if he continues to struggle with his control, the team will have to consider going with Guardado, even if it's just a short term fix.
June 19, 2008
For the second time in less than 24 hours, Rangers' closer C.J. Wilson pitched in the ninth inning of a close game and couldn't get the job done. Wilson allowed two runs on two hits, walked one and struck out one. Despite the performance the Rangers were able to secure a 5-4 victory over the Braves on Thursday night.

Our View: On Thursday, Wilson couldn't finish what he started but he was bailed out by a clutch hit from veteran Michael Young. Wilson has struggled this year. His ERA (5.04) is far too excessive for a relief pitcher and his BB/9 ration (4.50) is to blame.
June 11, 2008
The Rangers are happy with recent work from their relief pitching, namely Eddie Guardado and C.J. Wilson , and plan to continue with the dual effort that is paying dividends, according to MLB.com.

Our View:The team has turned to both Eddie Guardada and C.J. Wilson to cover the late innings, as they did on Tuesday when Guardado worked the eighth followed by Wilson in the ninth for the save. Manager Ron Washington plans on using that approach much more often.
June 10, 2008
C.J. Wilson made it interesting on Tuesday night, but he was able to nail down his 12th save. The southpaw got out the first two hitters before allowing a single and watching Jose Guillen reach on an error. Wilson struck out Mark Teahen to end the proceedings.

Our View:Wilson had allowed a run in each of his two previous outings, and it's good to see him keep the Royals off the board despite the error. He remains near the bottom of the closer rankings, but he is still useful.
May 22, 2008
Rangers closer C.J. Wilson is going to be listed as the team's closer tomorrow, but the days after might bring change, according to Sports Xchange.

Our View:The left-handed pitcher has struggled in recent weeks and manager Ron Washington has all but refused to commit to Wilson beyond the next save opportunity. If the Rangers make a change, Eddie Guardado is likely to be the man of choice to take the job.
May 21, 2008
C.J. Wilson has been performing poorly, but is still the Rangers' closer, according to FanNation.com. Manager Ron Washington said he would give the ball to Wilson in the team's next save situation, but didn't commit past that.

Our View:The Rangers expected the first-year closer to experience a learning curve this season, but the team was not pleased with the way he handled a few close calls on Monday. He has a poor 5.04 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 19.2 innings.
May 20, 2008
The Dallas Morning News reports that C.J. Wilson has been awful in May, and his poor form continued Monday with a blown save at Minnesota.

Our View:The biggest concern for Wilson is his K:BB (10:10) has come back to haunt him. His 5.03 ERA should call for a larger WHIP (1.32) but until he garners better command of the K Zone his ninth inning role will continue to be in jeopardy. Wilson has allowed seven runs over his last 4.2 innings.
May 19, 2008
C.J. Wilson blew his second save of the season on Monday night as he allowed one hit, two walks and a run in his lone inning on the hill.

Our View:With tonight's effort Wilson has allowed seven runs over his last 4.2 innings, and with Eddie Guardado lowering his ERA to 3.97 on this night, one has to think that the leash is getting awfully short with Wilson.
May 14, 2008
Manager Ron Washington confirms that C.J. Wilson is still the Rangers closer. Eddie Guardado shut the door on Tuesday night. "I said in Spring Training that Eddie would get some opportunities to save ballgames," Washington tells MLB.com. "That might be a week from now, or it might be four or five days from now. I'm glad to have him. The situation is going to dictate. If C.J. can't go, Eddie is going to get the ball."

Our View:Wilson has struggled recently, but fantasy owners can continue to count on him the near future. Guardado hasn't exactly been sharp this year (5.40 ERA), so we don't imagine Washington is eager to hand him the job.
May 14, 2008
C.J. Wilson has struggled in his last two outings (six runs, 1.2 innings), but he isn't worried. "It's not really anything I'm concerned about from a pitching standpoint at all," he tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "Every once in a while you get some really lucky breaks that go against you." Eddie Guardado got a save in Wilson's place on Tuesday.

Our View:Wilson remains the closer, despite what we saw on Tuesday night. Manager Ron Washington likely wanted to give C.J. a chance to clear his head.
April 20, 2008
C.J. Wilson suffered a blown save and was the pitcher of record in Sunday's loss to the Red Sox. The left-hander failed to record an out, allowed two hits, two runs and walked three in an appearance that cost Kevin Millwood and the Rangers a win on Sunday.

Our View:Wilson has been good this season, and while he doesn't seem to have his entire arsenal at full force (has only two strikeouts in eight innings of work) just yet, today he was just bad. Wilson was hit hard in the Red Sox four run eighth inning.
April 10, 2008
C.J. Wilson worked a perfect ninth for his second save of the season. The Rangers closer has pitched three innings on the year and has yet to strike out a hitter.
March 26, 2008
The Texas Rangers have decided on C.J. Wilson as their primary closer for opening day, according to MLB.com. "C.J. Wilson is going to be our closer," manager Ron Washington said before the Rangers' game against the Mariners on Tuesday night. Wilson was the Rangers' closer of choice for the final two months of last season and was 12-for-14 in save opportunities, yet Washington refused to anoint him closer and insisted for most of the spring that the job was open. That speculation ended today. "It's down to the point where he's shown me enough and that he's healthy," Washington said. "I just didn't want anybody taking anything for granted. He's thrown the ball well. He's the obvious choice."
March 12, 2008
C.J. Wilson threw a bullpen session Wednesday for the second straight day and is slated to pitch in a minor league game Saturday, according to the Dallas Morning News. Wilson is coming back from a bout with biceps tendinitis. He is the front-runner for the closing job but will need to prove that he's healthy.
March 11, 2008
C.J. Wilson threw a bullpen session on Tuesday for the first time since being hit with a case of biceps tendinitis on March 1, according to the Star Telegram. He could reportedly returned to the mound this weekend.
March 9, 2008
C.J. Wilson plans to toss a bullpen session in the next few days and maybe another one before getting into game action, according to the Dallas Morning News. He's been out with biceps tendinitis but is expected to be ready for opening day, barring a setback.
March 6, 2008
Rangers' closer C.J. Wilson is suffering from bicep tendonitis, according to the Dallas News. Wilson, who and has not pitched since last week, is considered day-to-day and has no definitive timetable for a return. If Wilson could not open the regular season as the primary ninth inning option, Eddie Guardado would get the call to close.
February 26, 2008
C.J. Wilson is taking heat from his teammates for comments he made about them in a recent ESPN.com article and in a Rangers-related blog, according to the Dallas Morning News. In the ESPN.com article, Wilson made remarks about their indifference to the presidential election. Part of his blog post went like this: "Come on man you have to admit the median or average guy in a baseball clubhouse does drive an SUV, drinks beer, golfs, likes college sports, chews or dips tobacco and is relatively a [expletive]." Michael Young addressed Wilson personally, saying, "I had a very direct talk with him." GM Jon Daniels, added, "I've spoken to him about his blogging in the past – using good judgment, what's appropriate and what's not – but not about this specifically. My understanding is the players are handling it themselves." Not the best way to endear yourself to your teammates. Wilson signed a one-year deal on Tuesday that will pay him $417,000.
February 26, 2008
C.J. Wilson said Tuesday that he's signed a contract for the upcoming season, according to the Dallas Morning News. The Rangers' current closer will make about $417,000, plus he'd get a $10,000 bonus if he manages to make the All-Star team.
February 10, 2008
C.J. Wilson hopes to be able to hold on to the closer role this season, and the best way to do that may be for him to control the strikezone after throwing far too many pitches in some outings last season. He also needs to hold off Eddie Guardado who was recently added to the team. Wilson had a solid '07 season with 12 saves and 63 K in 68.1 IP, but he averaged 17.6 pitches per inning in his 14 saves chances, and the team would like to see him cut that total by about two pitches and inning if possible.
