August 2, 2008
Reed Johnson went 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base while scoring two runs in the Cubs 5-1 win over Pittsburgh.

Our View:Johnson does not get enough regular playing time to have much fantasy value, but his versatility is certainly something that can help major league teams win.
July 24, 2008
Reed Johnson, starting in place of an injured Jim Edmonds, went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI for the Cubs on Wednesday night. One of the hits was his fourth home run of the season.

Our View:Until we find word on the severity of Edmonds injury, he is scheduled for an MRI, we won't know if Johnson will be part of a platoon now that Alfonso Soriano is back or if he will play everyday.
July 6, 2008
Reed Johnson had his best game since returning from the DL last Friday. He started in center field and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Our View:Johnson has started three of the four games in the outfield since his return. Still he will likely come off the bench once Alfonso Soriano returns from a broken hand.
July 3, 2008
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Reed Johnson appears to have recovered from back spasms and is due to come off the DL on Wednesday.

Our View:Johnson will likely see playing time immediately while spelling Jim Edmonds in center field. Edmonds remains relatively hot, but is no doubt feeling the aches of playing in 11 straight games.
June 24, 2008
The Cubs placed Reed Johnson on the DL Tuesday with back spasms.

Our View:Johnson had said he was feeling better and didn't think he needed a DL stint, but the Cubs needed to make a move to clear a spot for Sean Marshall, tonight's starter.
June 23, 2008
Reed Johnson is likely to be placed on the DL to make room on the roster for Sean Marshall, who will be recalled to start on Tuesday, according to the Chicago Tribune. Johnson hasn't played since last Tuesday because of back spasms.

Our View:The Cubs could use Johnson with Alfonso Soriano still out, but at least the move can be backdated. He would be eligible to return on July 3.
June 20, 2008
Reed Johnson, who is battling back spasms, thinks he is ready to return to action, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Johnson said, "I don't want to say I am 100 percent yet, but the way it's been progressing the last couple days, if I continue to go that direction, I'll be OK."

Our View:With Soriano out, the Cubs needs his speed on the basepaths, as he racked up 12 doubles and four stolen bases over 56 games this season.
June 18, 2008
Reed Johnson sat out Wednesday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays with back stiffness after a first-base collision on Tuesday night with first baseman Willy Aybar.

Our View:Piniella said Johnson was available in an emergency and could have pinch-hit if needed so it doesn't sound like the injury is too serious.
June 15, 2008
Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Reed Johnson would likely get the bulk of the at-bats in the leadoff spot while left fielder Alfonso Soriano is on the disabled list with a broken left hand, this according to the Daily Herald.

Our View:Piniella has tried with Eric Patterson and Ryan Theriot but Johnson is his No. 1 hitter moving forward. Johnson hit a 3-run homer in the second inning on Saturday to lead the Cubs to a victory.
June 14, 2008
Reed Johnson got a little revenge on his old club on Saturday. The outfielder had only one hit, but it was a three-run homer off ace Roy Halladay.

Our View:Between Johnson and Eric Hinske, the Blue Jays can't seem to handle their former teammates this year. It's too bad they don't face the Mets because Carlos Delgado could use the boost.
June 4, 2008
The Cubs pulled the 9-6 win over the Padres this evening and did so with opportunistic base running. The Cubs finished with six total stolen bases on the night, including two by outfielder Reed Johnson .

Our View:Mike Fontenot, Ryan Theriot, Alfonso Soriano, and Ronny Cedeno added the other swipes, though Cedeno was also caught stealing once.

Reed Johnson is going to platoon with aging vet Jim Edmonds in center field, according to MLB.com. Edmonds is expected to get starts against right-handed pitchers and Johnson is to start against lefties. Johnson isn't bothered by a platoon, and said, "When I came into this situation, I didn't really have too many expectations as far as playing time went. I was just kind of taking care of my business as far as going down to the cage and getting my work in, working out in the outfield with third-base coach Mike Quade and making my defense better. You know the playing time is just going to take care of itself."

Our View:Johnson has fared well with the Cubs this season, and is worth keeping on your roster and using for favorable left-handed pitching matchups, like today against Zach Duke (2-2 4.04 ERA) of the Pirates.
April 10, 2008
Reed Johnson is likely to play over the weekend, as the Phillies will be using lefties Cole Hamels and Jamie Moyer, according to the Chicago Sun Times. The former member of the Blue Jays has fared very well in his platoon role in center field with the Cubs, as he holds a .375 average over 16 at-bats.
April 6, 2008
Reed Johnson will make his second consecutive start for the Cubs in center field today, according to MLB.com. Felix Pie is still nursing a sore hand, and Johnson is off to a good start as he is hitting 3-for-6 with two RBI so far.
April 6, 2008
Reed Johnson made his first start with the Cubs on Saturday, according to the Chicago Tribune. He started in favor of Felix Pie in center field, and played well as he went 2-for-5 with two RBI in a 9-7 win over Houston.
March 25, 2008
In his first start with his new employer, outfielder Reed Johnson put his best foot forward, posting two hits, including a double, scoring twice Tuesday in a 7-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Two days after he was released by Toronto, Johnson agreed to a $1.3 million, one-year contract with the Cubs who hope to utilize the veteran in a platoon with young Felix Pie, primarily fielding Reed against left-handed pitching. Early indications show it was a wise move.
March 25, 2008
Recently released Toronto outfielder Reed Johnson has found a new home with the Chicago Cubs. He played five season with the Jays, while holding a .281 batting average. The 31-year-old veteran is expected to be in uniform as the Cubs face San Francisco in Cactus League play later Tuesday.
March 24, 2008
Reed Johnson, who was released by the Blue Jays on Sunday, and is expected to clear waivers because of $3.275 million salary, is reported to be talking to the Red Sox, Rays and Rangers. Fox Sports notes that the Cubs have been the most persistent suitor in early discussions. Chicago would prefer to limit the number of at-bats Pie, a 23-year-old lefty, has against lefty pitchers. Johnson, who was limited to 79 games in 2007 due to a herniated disk in his back, was released when the Blue Jays decided to go with Shannon Stewart as their primary option in left field.
March 23, 2008
Reed Johnson has been released by the Jays, according to CBSsports.com. After being released the 31-year old Johnson stated, "I don't have any hard feelings. I don't have much of a choice right now except to move on. It's really all I can say." Shannon Stewart has won the starting gig in left field.
March 22, 2008
The Globe and Mail report that rumors on the Toronto front have the Blue Jays quietly placing Reed Johnson on waivers. General manager J.P. Ricciardi said before the Grapefruit League game on Saturday against the Yankees that Johnson was not on waivers; but where there is smoke, there is a disappointed big leaguer. The Blue Jays soured on Johnson last season when he didn't show the promise they had hoped, and the front office followed up this winter by signing Shannon Stewart. The report notes that both players will not make the team, according to manager John Gibbons, and by all indications, Stewart is expected to survive the spring and make the opening day roster. Neither player has much fantasy value and Johnson has zero until he can find a team to play for, if in fact he was released.
March 21, 2008
Reed Johnson and Shannon Stewart continue to battle for playing time in the Blue Jays OF, this according to a report on the AP. “Shannon and I are happy and we can play well together,” Johnson said. “I understand why they brought him in." Johnson really hit poorly last season with just a .236 mark a year after being a borderline all-star, and while Stewart is years removed from being a fantasy factor, he can still hit as he batted .290 last season. At this point neither player has separated himself form the other, so neither is worthy of a look in mixed leagues as of yet.
February 25, 2008
The Globe and Mail suggest that the market for Reed Johnson is, in the words of one front-office source “non-existent." The primary reason for the lack of interest in the veteran is because his ailing back. With the depth in the Toronto outfield, the paper suggests that the team might listen to offers for young prospect, Adam Lind, who could be packaged with a young pitcher or a reliever.
January 2, 2008
The Blue Jays signed Reed Johnson to a one-year contract Wednesday worth $3.27 million. Johnson hit just .236 with two homers in 276 at-bats last year, but he could receive a decent amount of playing time in the outfield in '08.
