The St. Petersburg Times reports that centerfielder B.J. Upton underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. The surgery was deemed successful and Upton is expected to be "100 percent" sometime during spring training.

Our View:Upton is coming off a stellar postseason, in which he hit seven home runs and had 16 RBI. He had hit just nine homers in the regular season, but reluctantly revealed late in the year that he was playing with the labrum injury. Bossman Junior made some mechanical adjustments and had said he was feeling better during the postseason, but acknowledged he'd likely need surgery to fix the problem. Expect more power from him in 2009.
November 5, 2008
MLB.com reports that several teams have contacted the Rays regarding B.J. Upton, but it appears unlikely Tampa Bay will move the talented outfielder.

Our View:And why would they? Upton had an exceptional playoff run and played well throughout the regular season. Upton's 44 steals and developing power make him a very valuable fantasy commodity.
October 26, 2008
B.J. Upton stole three bases and was 2-for-4 in Tampa Bay's 5-4 Game 3 loss to the Phillies.

Our View:Upton was the first player to accomplish such a task since Lou Brock pulled it off in 1968. He had 44 steals in the regular season and was caught 16 times.
October 25, 2008
Game 3 of the World Series is likely to be delayed for an hour or so due to rain, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:There was some fear the game would not be able to be played at all, but indications are the rain will move out before it's too late.
October 23, 2008
B.J. Upton was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as the Rays beat the Phillies 4-2 in Game 2 of the World Series.

Our View:Bossman Junior continues to see the ball well in the postseason. He has arguably been the Rays best offensive player for Tampa Bay during their improbable run through the playoffs.
October 18, 2008
B.J. Upton went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in Saturday's 4-2 loss to Boston in Game 6 of the ALCS.

Our View:The Rays couldn't close the door on Boston, setting up Sunday's Game 7. Upton has impressively hit four homers in the series, with 11 RBI.
October 16, 2008
B.J. Upton went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBI, but it wasn't quite enough, as the Red Sox ripped the hearts out of the Rays and came back from a 7-0 deficit to win, 8-7.

Our View:Upton should have won the ALCS MVP on Thursday, but his bullpen took that away from him as they allowed Boston to score eight runs in the final three innings.
October 15, 2008
B.J. Upton has become the first player in history to hit five playoff home runs in a year in which he failed to hit at least 10 home runs in the regular season, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Upton hit 24 long balls last season and was held to just nine this season, likely the result of that stubborn shoulder that will require offseason surgery. Look for Upton to return to the 20/20 level next season with a shot at upping the ante to a possible 30/30 campaign.
October 15, 2008
B.J. Upton indicated that he will require surgery on his left shoulder shortly after the season ends, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:His shoulder is feeling good enough for him to take full swings again. He is not being hindered by the injury, as he blasted five homers over 28 at-bats in the postseason. This is quite impressive, considering he only hit nine in the regular season.
October 12, 2008
Outfielder B.J. Upton homered in the Game 2 ALCS win over the Red Sox, but his biggest at-bat was a game-winning sac fly in the bottom of the 11th.

Our View:Upton came up with the bases loaded and one out, and he quickly got down 0-2. His flyball was shallow, but J.D. Drew's throw was up the line. It wasn't a very good at-bat by Upton, but you can't argue with the result. B.J. has four long balls already this postseason.
October 6, 2008
B.J. Upton hit two home runs of of Gavin Floyd as the Rays defeated the White Sox 6-2 to wrap up their ALDS matchup on Monday.

Our View:Upton has homered three times in the last two games after hitting just three home runs over his final 55 regular games. We guess the extra juice from being in the playoffs has allowed Upton to work with that injured shoulder in a highly efficient manner. He appears locked in on high fastballs.
October 5, 2008
B.J. Upton hit his first post-season home run, a two run shot, in the Rays Game 3 loss to the White Sox.

Our View:Upton hit only nine long balls during the course of the season because of his injured shoulder, but on this day he got his pitch and didn't miss it.
September 26, 2008
B.J. Upton went 3-for-4 with two RBI in Friday's 6-4 loss to the Tigers. He hit a single, double, and a solo homer. He also stole his 44th base of the season.

Our View:That marks his fifth multi-hit game of September. He also snapped a 24-game skid without a homer.
September 21, 2008
B.J. Upton made his first start in 10 games for Tampa, and though the Rays were defeated by the Twins, Upton went 3-for-3 with a double.

Our View:Upton was also thrown out for the 16th time trying to steal a base, but fantasy owners should feel comfortable putting him back in their lineup.
September 21, 2008
As expected, B.J. Upton has returned to the starting lineup for Sunday's game, but he will play center field and not right, as was speculated, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:Upton pinch-hit on Saturday after missing the previous 10 games. Feel free to insert him back into your fantasy lineup.
September 20, 2008
B.J. Upton will make his return to the starting lineup on Sunday should his workout on Saturday go well, according to RaysBaseball.com.

Our View:Upton has been dealing with a strained quad, and it is thought that he might go to right field when he comes back instead of going back to his normal center field.
September 20, 2008
Center fielder B.J. Upton is not in Saturday's lineup as he continues to heal from a strained quad, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:Upton took batting practice on Friday, and though he said he could pinch-hit, it is not known when he will be able to start.
September 19, 2008
B.J. Upton, who is dealing with a strained left quad, took batting practice Thursday and said he felt good enough to pinch-hit, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:He has been out of the lineup for nine straight games, but manager Joe Maddon believes he may be ready to return over the weekend. Upton doesn't want to risk aggravating the injury and jeopardize his availability for the playoffs.
September 16, 2008
B.J. Upton took batting practice and ran prior to Monday's game against the Red Sox, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Upton has been a major disappointment this season, and even if he does return his quad injury could diminish his speed on the base pads for awhile.
September 16, 2008
B.J. Upton is still not ready to return to action, as he is recovering from a sore quad, according to the Tampa Tribune. "Last time I pulled it last season I said it'd be five days and it ended up being 36, so we'll see," said Upton.

Our View:Quad injuries can take time to heal, and though it is possible he'll be playing by the end of the week, his status is really up in the air.
September 13, 2008
B.J. Upton won't play this weekend, as his left quad is still sore, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He has been out since Monday.

Our View:Upton hopes to return to the lineup at the beginning of next week.
September 10, 2008
B.J. Upton's strained left quad is healing, and though the outfielder said he felt better on Tuesday, he is probably not going to be back in the lineup until Friday, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:Upton left the team's game on Monday against Boston with the malady. His power numbers and average have been slightly disappointing for fantasy owners, but he has made up for it somewhat with 42 stolen bases.
September 8, 2008
B.J. Upton left Monday's game against the Red Sox with a strained left quad, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:With Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria already down, an Upton injury is about the last thing the Rays need. Let's hope this injury isn't too serious.
September 4, 2008
B.J. Upton's left shoulder continues to bother him, and in fact he has a torn labrum that will require off-season surgery, according to MLB.com. "At this point, there's nothing I can do about it, especially with Carl [Crawford] and Evan [Longoria] already out," Upton told the Times. "It's a little too late in the year, especially with the position we're in, for me to pull up lame. I just have to suck it up and keep grinding."

Our View:This injury could partly explain why his slugging percentage has fallen from .508 last year to .397 this season. Still, he has fallen from 24 home runs to just eight this year, and no matter what the reason, it has been a rather disappointing season at the plate for Upton. Luckily, he has stolen 41 bases to help offset the loss of production with the bat in his hands.
August 30, 2008
B.J. Upton went 2-for-5 and chipped in two RBI in Friday's 10-9 win over the Orioles at Tropicana Field. Both of his hits were doubles.

Our View:Upton is hot as he registed multiple hits in three straight games, and hopefully he won't cool off in September.
August 20, 2008
B.J. Upton has been criticized for not playing hard and suffering from "mental lapses," but he stated that he wants to move on, according to the Tampa Tribune. Upton said, "The last thing I want to become is a distraction to this team. We've got something way too good going on right now to have to deal with this. We just want to win ballgames and right now I think I'm becoming a distraction. I just can't let it happen, for my sake and for the team's sake so we can move on and get where we need to be."

Our View:Upton is doing a good job of moving on, as he is hitting .375 (9-for-24) over his last five games, with one homer and five RBI.
August 19, 2008
B.J. Upton is in the lineup and hitting second for Tuesday's game against the Angels.

Our View:We're just making sure fantasy owners know he is playing, as Upton has earned some bench time with his recent lack of hustle.
August 19, 2008
B.J. Upton has apologized for his latest episode of failing to hustle, according to the Tampa Tribune. His leisurely gait from home to second base resulted in him being thrown out on Monday. It was one of four recent incidents where he failed to hustle. "It can’t happen, especially in the middle of a pennant race. Every run matters, every out matters. I want to apologize for it. It’s just something that can’t happen," Upton said.

Our View:Apologizing is a good first step, but he needs to prove it out on the field. Manager Joe Maddon laid the issue in the hands of the players, and teammate Cliff Floyd responded, saying how much it bothered him. Maybe Upton finally got the message.
August 19, 2008
Despite the lack of hustle that led B.J. Upton to get thrown out at second base in Monday's contest, he will play on Tuesday, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:Upton has pleased fantasy owners with his 36 stolen bases and .380 OBP, but his manager and teammates are getting sick of his laziness. Hopefully he will take the issue to heart this time around.
August 18, 2008
B.J. Upton was thrown out at second base Monday on what should have been an easy double had Upton been hustling, according to the AP. Upton hit a ball in the fourth inning that hit the wall on a hop. Apparently thinking it would be a home run, Upton jogged out of the box and towards an uncovered second base. But first baseman Mark Teixeira followed the play up the line and tagged Upton just before he touched second.

Our View:This is the fourth time Upton was caught not hustling, though this time he wasn't taken out of the game. Still, this is becoming a bad trend for the talented center fielder.
August 17, 2008
The pitching was solid but outfielder B.J. Upton made sure the offense was in check as the Rays put the 7-4 win on the board versus Texas. Upton went 3-for-5 at the plate with his 28th double and eighth homer of the season, totaling three RBIs and two runs scored.

Our View:Upton had no homers last month and was touting just one in August before this evening. His offense has failed to impress as hoped, though he continues to enhance the effort with stolen bases (13 since July 1).
August 16, 2008
B.J. Upton will return to the lineup on Sunday, the Tampa Tribune reports.

Our View:The youngster was reprimanded with a bench spot on Saturday after he failed to hustle on Friday. Hopefully B.J. learned the lesson.
August 16, 2008
B.J. Upton was removed from the game for a second time in a week for failing to hustle on Friday, and he will be benched again on Saturday, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Rays manager Joe Maddon explained it, saying, "I can’t make it any more plain, simple, obvious, black and white. There are no gray areas. I can’t have Aki (Iwamura) run like he is and (Carlos) Pena and Cliff (Floyd), who has two bad knees, etc., and permit that. I can’t permit it.”

Our View:Upton will learn one way or another that Maddon wants his squad to play a certain way, and he will sit if he does not. Fantasy owners who enjoy his numbers can only hope that he retains the information this time.
August 15, 2008
B.J. Upton was pulled from Friday's game in the sixth inning for failing to hustle while attempting to beat out a double play.

Our View:It's the second time in the last week that he's been benched for failing to give maximum effort. We could see Joe Maddon bench him tomorrow to send a message.
August 8, 2008
B.J. Upton stole his 35th base and had two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Rays.

Our View:Upton also walked twice on the night to give him 78 walks on the year, good enough to push his OBP over .380 despite a batting average of just .266 including just seven hits in his last nine games.
August 7, 2008
After being benched Wednesday for not hustling, B.J. Upton returned to the lineup and went 0-for-4 in the Rays loss to Seattle.

Our View:Upton may have gotten the message, but it certainly did not help his performance tonight. Despite his disappointing power numbers, Upton has 34 steals and a quality on-base percentage and should be used in all leagues.
August 6, 2008
B.J. Upton is out of Wednesday's starting lineup after failing to give a top effort on Tuesday, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View:It will be a one-day benching, and Upton could be used late in the game Wednesday if needed. Ben Zobrist is covering center field in his absence.
August 3, 2008
B.J. Upton hit his seventh home run of the year on Sunday as he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Our View:The homer was Upton's first in 27 games, a shocking fall for a player who hit 24 big flies last season. The speed that has led to 33 steals is great, but the rest of his numbers have failed to measure up to his work from last season.
July 19, 2008
B.J. Upton, mired in a 8-for-42 (.190) slump, is hitting seventh in the Rays' order tonight. He had yet to hit lower than fourth this year.

Our View:Upton's power this year has been down, but he's added more steals to his game, so owners can't be too disappointed. Hopefully this new spot in the order will allow him to refocus and get back on track.
July 13, 2008
B.J. Upton is hitting .219 since June 15, and was given yesterday off to rest and work on his swing, according to the Tampa Tribune. "I just wanted to give him a chance to think about it, digest it, see if it's what I think it is and then move on from there, Rays manager Joe Maddon said."

Our View:Upton has been a bit of a disappointment, as he has only slugged six home runs to go with a declining batting average. He has stolen 27 bases, and has a decent RBI total of 44, but fantasy owners would like to see a little more production.
June 29, 2008
B.J. Upton went 2-for-5 on Sunday, but the more important news was that he stole a base for the first time since June 14.

Our View:Upton seems way too fast to have such long gaps without a steal, but this is the second time this season we've seen him go more than two weeks between pilfers. Maybe he's just not as confident on the bases as he needs to be.
June 16, 2008
B.J. Upton has already tied a career-high with 22 stolen bases, and Manager Joe Maddon commented that he is more aggressive this season, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Maddon said, "As he gains more experience, he becomes better at it. I think he's choosing better spots to go and has a better idea of what he wants to do. He's been thrown out a couple times on calls that were wrong, quite frankly, so it could even be a better percentage than it is."

Our View:Along with the 22 steals, Upton has racked up 18 doubles, one triple, five homers, and 38 RBI, with 42 runs scored over 67 games. He also maintains a .293 average, and is one of the brightest young stars in the league.
June 8, 2008
The Rays suffered the 6-3 loss to the Rangers this evening, but outfielder B.J. Upton continues to swing a hot stick in support of Tampa's cause. Upton went 1-for-2 with two walks and his fifth home run of the season, totaling two RBIs on the night.

Our View:This brings Upton's average to .301, going 4-for-9 with five walks, no strikeouts, two homers, and three RBIs in three games versus Texas.
June 6, 2008
B.J. Upton had a home run and two steals while scoring three runs in Tampa's win over Texas Friday.

Our View:Upton now has 20 steals already on the year after swiping 22 bags all of last season. The home runs are down (he has just three so far), but Upton is giving his owners value in other ways.
June 5, 2008
The Rays have selected shortstop Tim Beckham with the number one overall pick in the baseball draft Thursday, according to the AP.

Our View:They selected him over Florida State catcher Buster Posey. Beckham, who hails from Griffin, Georgia, was ranked as one of the best pure athletes in the draft and labeled as a legitimate five-tool player. He also established himself as the top prep prospect in the entire nation with solid performances at last summer’s high school showcase events, and hit .500 with five homers, 31 RBI and 16 stolen bases this season.
May 26, 2008
B.J. Upton is hitting .316 in May with a .409 on base percentage, and the young center fielder stole two bases on Sunday to raise his total to 13 on the year. Of his 13 steals, nine have come in May. Upton has done everything the team has asked of him, however, he has not been the power outlet that many fantasy owners were hoping for.

Our View:Upton has only three home runs in 178 at-bats. Which is far behind his 2007 pace. In fact, Upton has yet to hit a May home run. What goes up, must come down. In Upton's case, what has yet to go up, will eventually. Expect Upton's power numbers to rise as the weather warms.
May 25, 2008
Fantasy owners are sure to be happy with Tampa Bay outfielder B.J. Upton today, putting a strong performance in the box score as the Rays earned the 5-4 win over Baltimore. Upton went 1-for-3 at the plate with two walks, one run scored, and two stolen bases.

Our View:Upton has picked up his efforts a bit as the Rays continue to win, now hitting .316 through the month of May with nine stolen bases and nine doubles.
May 17, 2008
B.J. Upton was 3-for-5 in Saturday afternoon's loss to the Cardinals. The center fielder added two runs to his stat line. Upton's power numbers can't be found. His at-bat to home run ratio is just under 50:1, far below last year when the young outfielder hit 24 home runs in 474.

Our View:Upton was caught stealing in the fifth inning on Saturday was an easy out trying to advance to third on Evan Longoria's game-tying sacrifice fly when the throw to the plate was cut off. Both plays were ill advised, especially when he was trying to advance from second to third with two outs. Ill advised is being nice actually, it was a stupid decision and was just one of the plays that cost the Rays a win.
May 12, 2008
B.J. Upton has warmed with the weather. The talented center fielder has stolen three bases in the last six games bringing his season total to seven in 11 attempts.

Our View:Upton now needs to warm up his power numbers. In 128 at-bats the Rays outfielder has three long balls. His 24 home runs a year ago gave him a HR/AB rate of 19.8. This years 42.7 number is far below his major and minor league career peripherals.
May 11, 2008
B.J. Upton went 3-for-5 with three runs, an RBI, and a stolen base in Sunday's win over the Angels.

Our View:Upton has cooled off a little bit since his ultra-hot stretch in mid-April, but a shoulder injury played into his slower stretch. It looks like he is putting the ailment behind him.
May 7, 2008
B.J. Upton broke up a shutout in the ninth inning with a two run double for the Rays.

Our View:Upton is batting .295 on the year, but he has only one long ball in his last 18 games, and only two more SB (6) than CS (4). It's too early to tell if the shoulder is bothering him, but he has looked pretty good moving around since the injury.
May 3, 2008
Tampa Bay CF B.J. Upton reports his recently-injured shoulder is improving quickly and he hopes to be back in action sooner rather than later, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Upton had fallen with injury in the midst of a swing against Baltimore LHP Brian Burres on Thursday, a similar injury to one he had suffered in August of 2006 that sidelined the slugger for three days. "(It) just feels kind of funny... it hurts initially, then it feels like it's not really there," said Upton. "(It happens) when I kind of get out front (with my swing)... (I) can't really tell you exactly what does it." Upton reports it is a regular problem he tends to experience late in the season but could not explain exactly why it happens. The Rays hope to have him back in the lineup today.
May 1, 2008
Updating an earlier report, B.J. Upton's shoulder injury does not appear to be serious, according to the Tampa Tribune. “It looks bad right away. It feels bad right away,” Upton said. “But this is the best it’s ever felt right after, so we shouldn’t think too much of it.”

Our View:Upton will likely miss Friday's game, but what could have been a disaster appears to be simply a minor annoyance. Keep an eye on how he does once he returns.
May 1, 2008
B.J. Upton suffered an apparent shoulder injury and was forced to exit Thursday afternoon’s game against the Orioles, according to the AP. Upton suffered the injury while swinging at a 2-1 pitch with two outs in the fifth inning. The fourth-year pro fouled off a pitch before doubling over and clutching his left shoulder.

Our View:Nathan Haynes replaced him in the lineup. We will keep you posted on Upton's status when more details are released.
April 27, 2008
Tampa Bay CF B.J. Upton struggled at the plate despite the Rays' 0-3 win over the Boston Red Sox. Upton went 0-for-4 with three strike outs on the day.

Our View:Upton has been one of the leaders in walks in the AL and has carried a strong bat for the Rays thus far, but he is now just 2-for-19 over his last seven games.
April 23, 2008
Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon met with reporters today and offered a bit of clarity in the Rays' Wednesday night lineup, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Maddon acknowledged the move placing Evan Longoria in the 6th spot in the batting order might seem odd, but noted he likes the "break-up" bat Longoria offers to that part of the order, putting the right-handed the bat in the middle of two lefties (Carlos Pena and Eric Hinske). Maddon notes he has taken the same approach with B.J. Upton, putting him between Carl Crawford and Carlos Pena, and has been pleased with the results. Maddon believes this creates problems for the opposition, unable to make simple substitutions out of the bullpen to find the advantage based on the hitter groupings. "That's where it really shows up, is later in the game," Maddon said. "Instead of having a pinch-hitter, I'd rather just attack it with the lineup we want to use and just find out if lefties can hit lefties. The guys are going to be given the opportunity."
April 20, 2008
B.J. Upton had a quiet day as he went 1-for-4 in Sunday's 6-0 loss to the White Sox. His lone hit was a single.

Our View:He should bounce back fine, and is still hitting 24-for-71 with 16 RBI and four stolen bases for the season.
April 19, 2008
B.J. Upton had three more hits on Saturday night as he also knocked in a run for the Rays.

Our View:Upton now has 15 hits in his last nine games after a slow start and is poised to challenge the 30/30 ranks this season.
April 18, 2008
B.J. Upton had two hits and a run scored on Friday night for the Rays from the third spot in the lineup.

Our View:Upton has an entirely too high 15 K on the season, but he also has 10 BB which helps to offset the swings and misses.
April 14, 2008
B.J. Upton went 2-for-5 with a homer, one run, two RBI, and a stolen base in Monday's loss to the Yankees. It was his second straight game with a homer, and he has nine RBI over the previous five contests.

Our View:Upton has a breakout campaign in 2007, and our only question now is just how good he will be. He's off to a strong start in this young season.
April 13, 2008
Young slugger B.J. Upton drove his first homer of the season over the fence today in support of Tampa Bay’s 2-6 win over the Orioles. Upton went 1-for-3 with one walk and one strike out, leaving two men on base but driving in three RBIs.

Our View:The performance brings Upton to an average of .302 on the season.
April 2, 2008
B.J. Upton went 1-for-3 in the Rays 6-9 loss to Baltimore this evening, hitting a double with two runs scored and two walks. Upton is expected to step his game up to high marks this season and this early success gives us hope that all that talent and potential might finally come to fruition in '08.
March 31, 2008
B.J. Upton recorded two RBI in the Ray's opening day win over the Orioles. Upton has started right were he left off in 2007, a season where he recorded 24 HR, 86 runs scored, 82 RBI and 22 stolen bases.
March 22, 2008
B.J. Upton, who left Thursday's game after being hit by a Paul Byrd slowball, told the Tampa Tribune on Friday he would be ready to play today. Rays manager Joe Maddon, however, said both would get today off and be back in the lineup Sunday. It's good to hear the injury isn't serious.
March 21, 2008
B.J. Upton hopes to be able to return to the Rays lineup on Saturday, this after taking a pitch off his triceps on Thursday, according to MLB.com. "I don't know if they're going to let me, but I'm looking to [play] tomorrow," Upton said. Upton is being drafted like a possible 30/30 candidate this season, and while he might reach those marks, an awful lot will have to go right for him given a stratospheric BABIP of almost .400 last season coupled with the ninth best HR/F ratio in the game.
March 20, 2008
B.J. Upton was forced out of action on Thursday when he was hit on the left triceps by a pitch in the first inning by Indians' pitcher Paul Byrd, this according to MLB.com. After getting hit, Upton was met by assistant trainer Paul Harker, who tested Upton's strength in his left arm by having him go through an array of squeezing exercises. A few moments later, Upton left the game and was escorted to the visiting clubhouse by Harker. No further news is available at this time.
March 3, 2008
B.J. Upton led the Rays to victory over the Pirates on Sunday, and much of his success was a direct result of his speed. The outfielder had a two-run triple in the third after having doubled in the first inning. He later reached base on a walk and stole second before being pulled for backup Justin Ruggiano. Upton continues to raise his fantasy stock, shares that soared last year even with his move to the outfield.
February 19, 2008
B.J. Upton was good in 2007, in fact call it a breakout season if you like, but skipper Joe Maddon believes his best as the Rays center fielder is yet to come. The team website noted Tuesday, "He's just scratching the surface [of how good he can be]," Maddon said. Maddon continue to pile on the accolades in Tuesday's media session talking about Upton's quick feet, his bat speed, the sound the ball makes coming off his stick, and his arm. "Everybody talked about Delmon's [Young] arm," Maddon said. "This guy has a great arm." Upton's fantasy worth jumps this year, and his dual eligibility (2B/OF) makes him all the more valuable.
