Player Notes
November 5, 2008
Pitcher Greg Maddux won his record 18th Gold Glove on Wednesday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Maddux has won five Gold Gloves in a row, and 18 in a 19-year span. He is set to retire soon, and when he does he will go down as the best fielding pitcher of all time.
November 3, 2008
Greg Maddux is likely to retire, according to the New York Post. "He hasn't made a final decision, but for now it is doubtful he will play (any longer)," Boras said at the GM Meetings. "As it stands now, he is not going to play."

Our View:He is the eighth winningest pitcher in Major League history and a certain Hall of Famer. He had lost a lot of his fantasy value in recent years and it seems entirely possible that he shows up as a pitching coach sometime in his retirement.
October 3, 2008
If the NLDS between the L.A. Dodgers and Chicago Cubs gets to a Game 4, either Derek Lowe or Greg Maddux will get the start, according to the L.A. Times.

Our View:Lowe would be throwing on three days' rest. Maddux was used out of the bullpen for one inning during Game 1, and is still an effective pitcher, despite his 8-13 record this season.
October 2, 2008
Greg Maddux came out of the bullpen and threw a scoreless inning for the Dodgers in their playoff victory over the Cubs, according to the L.A. Times. He says he would not be averse to being used two days in a row.

Our View:Maddux had a decent year, with a 4.22 ERA and 1.21 WHIP, but accumulated just eight victories. It was just the third time in two decades the future Hall of Fame hurler had been used in the role.
September 30, 2008
The Padres have acquired right-handed pitcher Eduardo Perez and left-handed pitcher Michael Watt to complete the deal that shipped Greg Maddux to the Dodgers, according MLB.com.

Our View:The Dodgers made the playoffs, so the Padres received two high profile minor league prospects as listed in the trade agreement.
September 27, 2008
The Dodgers have not said yet if they will use Greg Maddux in the playoffs as a starter, but on Saturday night he made a good case. In the Dodgers' 2-1 win, Maddux went six innings giving up one run on only two hits.

Our View:It will be another year in the playoffs for Maddux and if he is going to start it will be in Game 4 but manager Joe Torre has not said who will make that start.
September 26, 2008
Greg Maddux, who had his scheduled start on Thursday postponed, will now start on Saturday in an effort to allow the Dodgers to set up their playoff rotation, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Our View:Maddux will need the game to go 12 innings and to pitch a complete game to reach 200 innings this season. We're betting he won't last that long, he has to think about contributing in the playoffs after all.
September 25, 2008
MLB.com reports that Eric Stults will start in place of Greg Maddux on Thursday since the Dodgers clinched the AL West earlier in the day.

Our View:There was not immediate word on when Maddux will start next. Maddux has gone 1-4 with a 5.71 ERA in six starts for the Dodgers since being traded from San Diego on Aug. 16.
September 14, 2008
Greg Maddux retired the first 13 Rockies he faced on his way to seven shutout innings on Sunday. Maddux didn't walk a single batter while allowing just two hits in a no-decision.

Our View:Vintage Maddux on this afternoon. On a day when Maddux was at his best, the Dodgers offense was completely non-existent. Though Maddux hasn't been great since joining the Dodgers, he has allowed two or fewer runs in three of his last four starts.
September 1, 2008
Greg Maddux earned his 354th career victory to tie Roger Clemens for eighth all-time, as he defeated his former team the Padres. Maddux lasted 5.2 innings permitting six hits, no walks and two runs.

Our View:This was a second straight solid outing for Maddux after a rough outing in his first appearance in blue and white. Over his last eight starts Maddux has walked all of three batters, and with control like that, he is worth keeping an eye on down the stretch.
August 27, 2008
In his first start as a Dodger, Greg Maddux didn't have the results he or the Dodgers were hoping for. He took the loss against the Phillies only going 5.2 innings. Tonight Maddux will square off against the Nationals in his second start for the Dodgers.

Our View:Even though Maddux's ERA has climbed above 4.00 it might be worth starting him against the last place Nats.
August 22, 2008
In his first start for the Dodgers this season, Greg Maddux did not impress, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits to the Phillies, who won the game 8-1.

Our View:Not a good outing for Maddux. He still has fantasy value in NL-only leagues, and playing for the Dodgers should help to increase his win total.
August 19, 2008
Greg Maddux will resume his Dodgers career when he starts on Friday night in Philadelphia, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Manager Joe Torre prefers to hold Maddux over for the opener of a series against the Phillies to having him face the Rockies at Dodger Stadium. Maddux last pitched for San Diego on Friday night, when he lost to the Phillies, but he limited them to a Pat Burrell solo home run in seven innings with four strikeouts and no walks. He's 0-2 with a 2.70 ERA against the Phillies this year, and 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA against the Rockies.
August 18, 2008
The Dodgers have acquired Greg Maddux from the Padres, according to the LA Times. It is not known what the Dodgers are giving up in the deal.

Our View:It had looked like this long-rumored deal wouldn't get done, but it looks like the Pads and Dodgers worked it out. Maddux gets to stay on the West Coast like he wanted and will get to pitch for a contender.
August 16, 2008
Greg Maddux pitched well Friday, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out four over seven innings. However, it wasn't enough, as fellow veteran Jamie Moyer pitched the Phils to a 1-0 win.

Our View:Maddux deserves to get to double-digit wins again, but it doesn't look like he's going to get there.
August 9, 2008
While rumors swirl of a potential move, San Diego RHP Greg Maddux keeps on keeping on, going six innings to allow just two runs (both earned) on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts in the 8-3 win over the Rockies.

Our View:The Dodgers are rumored to be pursuing Maddux after he cleared waivers, but tonight he was getting it done once again for the Padres. That's three consecutive wins for the veteran hurler (certainly helping his value), touting just one walk versus nine strikeouts over the span.
August 9, 2008
San Diego Padres' starter Greg Maddux cleared waivers on Thursday and the Dodgers remain very interested in acquiring the future Hall of Famer, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:There was no indication whether the Dodgers had contacted the Padres about a possible deal on Thursday, but we anticipate there will be news coming forth on this in the very near future. Teams are preparing for the stretch towards the playoffs and a veteran arm this reliable is not easy to find. The Dodgers may head the pack, but other teams may come calling (though we can't imagine Maddux working in the American League). Stay tuned.
August 3, 2008
Greg Maddux won his second straight start as he picked career victory number 352 against the Giants. Maddux allowed only two hits, he didn't walk a batter, as he held the G-men to one run over six innings.

Our View:In his last 13 starts against the Giants Maddux hasn't lost once, and he is 30-14 against them in his career, so you had better have him in the lineup every time he faces the men from San Francisco.
August 1, 2008
It will be difficult for the San Diego Padres to trade Greg Maddux, as Padres GM Kevin Towers is not optimistic he would get through waivers, according to Padres.com.

Our View:The Padres were offered deals, but they deemed the prospects insufficient in order to get rid of Maddux. There is next to no chance a contending club would allow Maddux to get through waivers without being claimed, so it's a near certainty that he will stay put.
July 31, 2008
Greg Maddux is likely to remain in San Diego, as the Padres have been unable to reach a deal with the Dodgers, the only team Maddux has agreed to go to, according to ESPN's Jayson Stark.

Our View:Maddux has pitched well this year despite a poor record, but the Dodgers were apparently unwilling to offer more than a modest offer.
July 31, 2008
Talks between the Padres and Dodgers involving Greg Maddux have stalled, according to ESPN's Buster Olney. The two sides appear to be far apart in agreeing what compensation is appropriate for the pitcher, and it's unclear whether the two sides will continue talks today.

Our View:Maddux will only approve a trade to a West Coast team, leaving the Padres with limited options. The Dodgers' interest in him appears to be mild.
July 30, 2008
Greg Maddux doesn't appear likely to join the Dodgers, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Our View:The Padres want the Dodgers to pick up the reaming dollars on Maddux's deal ($10 million this year), something the Dodgers are reluctant to do. The Padres are also engaged in other talks to fill other needs, so it is unclear if this move will happen.
July 30, 2008
Greg Maddux may not accept a deal to the Phillies but it appears that he could be headed to the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to ESPN.

Our View:Maddux only will accept a deal to another team on the West Coast, and he could be headed back to the club that he pitched for in 2006. Maddux might be only 4-8 on the year, but his WHIP is still solid at 1.29 and his ERA a serviceable 4.29.
July 30, 2008
Greg Maddux reportedly told the Padres he would not accept a trade to the Phillies, according to the FriarForum.com.

Our View:Maddux has allowed 14 home runs with San Diego this season, and you cannot blame him for not wanting to play his home games at hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
July 29, 2008
Greg Maddux won his first game since May 10 on Monday over Arizona. He also moved into 10th all-time on the strikeout list.

Our View:Maddux didn't have his best night tonight but did have something he's not used to - run support. Maddux gave up nine hits and four runs in only five innings but benefitted from the Padres eight runs in the first three innings.
July 18, 2008
Greg Maddux allowed six earned runs in four innings, and though he avoided the loss, his ERA went from 3.90 to 4.21.

Our View:Maddux has only three wins on the season and with his low strikeout totals, it would be tough to justify putting him on a fantasy roster.
July 12, 2008
Yet another pitcher watches his outing fall short of the win due to poor offensive support, this time in San Diego where veteran Greg Maddux watched his Padres fall short of need at the plate, suffering the 4-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Maddux pitched seven innings, surrendering three runs (all earned) on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:Maddux hasn't seen a win since May 10th, though he carries a respectable 3.90 ERA and has walked just 24 batters on the season.
July 7, 2008
Greg Maddux, in a 3-1 loss to the Marlins, has not recorded a victory since mid-May. A stretch of nine straight starts. The right-handed future Hall of Famer is 0-4 with seven no-decisions despite the fact he has allowed two or fewer earned runs eight times in during that span.

Our View:Maddux did his job on Monday night, but Ricky Nolasco for the Fish was just better.
June 26, 2008
Greg Maddux was touched up for seven runs, six earned, in 5.2 innings against the Twins on Wednesday to fall to 3-6 on the year despite a solid ERA of 3.52.

Our View:This was the first time that Maddux had allowed more than two earned runs in a start since May 15th, a stretch of eight starts. He usually rebounds from outings like this, so don't be too concerned with this poor effort.
June 25, 2008
Greg Maddux looks for win number 351 tonight as the Padres host the Twins. Maddux is 0-1 with a 1.73 in four June starts but has not gotten a win since May 10.

Our View:Maddux is still dealing at 42 years of age. He should be a popular target as the trade deadline approaches.
June 24, 2008
The Phillies are in the market for a starting pitcher, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Greg Maddux, CC Sabathia, Roy Oswalt, and Erik Bedard are among the hurlers being considered.

Our View:Their farm system has talent but lacks an arm that is ready to make an impact this season in the Phillies' rotation. The Phillies have strong depth in their outfield, and Shane Victorino could serve as favorable trade bait to land one of the aforementioned pitchers.
June 21, 2008
Greg Maddux needed just 85 pitches to make it through seven innings as he held the Tigers to just one run though it wasn't good enough to earn a decision.

Our View:Maddux is only 3-5 on the year despite a sterling 3.17 ERA and 1.19 WHIP proving that the master can still get major league hitters out with the best of them.
June 15, 2008
Greg Maddux allowed two runs on eight hits, walked none and struck out two in six innings of work on Sunday.

Our View:Maddux threw 104 pitches and never seemed to have command of the strike zone. The loss is his fifth of the season.
June 11, 2008
San Diego RHP Greg Maddux watched a good effort go to waste as the relief pitching and the offense failed to support his cause, falling 7-2 to the Dodgers. Maddux pitched six innings, giving up just one run on six hits with three walks and one strikeout.

Our View:Typical Maddux, he influenced batters into nine ground outs versus just six fly outs, but the team failed to push him through.
June 4, 2008
San Diego RHP Greg Maddux was brilliant in support of the 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs, a pitcher's duel won by the consummate veteran and future Hall of Famer. Maddux went seven strong innings to allow just one run on three hit with no walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:Maddux now carries an ERA of 3.48, but this is his first win in his last five starts. He stands at 4-4 on the season with just 12 walks allowed versus 42 strikeouts.
May 20, 2008
Veteran RHP Greg Maddux wasn't around long enough to get the win, but he did pitch well as the Padres put the 3-2 win over St. Louis on the board. Maddux went five innings, surrendering two runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View:Maddux left with no decision and now has just one win over his last seven starts, but now has allowed just nine walks versus 28 strikeouts this season.
May 11, 2008
Greg Maddux's win this evening, a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies in Denver, was the 350th of his career, putting him on an illustrious list with nine other pitchers through the history of the game to reach that benchmark.

Our View:The 42-year-old Maddux (3-3) improved to 350-217 in 23 big league seasons. It's another milestone to go along with his four NL Cy Young Awards, one World Series championship and a record 17 Gold Glove Awards.
May 11, 2008
The great Greg Maddux is once again listed in the win column for the evening, pitching six innings to surrender one run (unearned) on just three hits in the Padres 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies.

Our View:Maddux now has a record of 3-3 with an ERA of 3.60 on the season, picking up his first win since April 13th and still sporting one of the best BB/K ratios in the league (8/26).
May 10, 2008
Greg Maddux will be going for his 350th career win when he takes the diamond against the Rockies tonight, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:Maddux has lost two straight starts, and is 2-3 with a 4.09 ERA over seven starts this season. He only allowed eight walks over 44 innings, and hence still holds a good 1.25 WHIP. The future Hall of Famer is worth starting tonight as he goes for his milestone. Maddux is 14-8 over his career against Colorado.
April 23, 2008
Greg Maddux pitched beautifully allowing four hits and no runs to the Giants, but he was denied his 350th career victory when Trevor Hoffman blew the game in the ninth.

Our View:Maddux lowered his ERA to 3.66 and his WHIP to 1.06 on the night and should continue to be a pitcher to count on for decent ratio's moving forward.
April 23, 2008
Greg Maddux will go for his 350th win of his illustrious career tonight when the Padres take on the Giants, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Maddux is 6-0 with a 2.67 ERA against the Giants dating back to May 9, 2003.

Our View:Maddux has three solid starts and one shelling on his docket this season, and that will likely be the pattern moving forward as he will have success when his control is exquisite, but when it's off, you'll want to hide the women and children.
April 18, 2008
Greg Maddux was torched on Friday after three great outings as he allowed 13 hits and nine runs in seven innings against the Diamondbacks.

Our View:Maddux will have outings like this from time to time when his pitches bite off too much of the strikezone, but he actually pitched quite well after allowing six runs in the first inning.
April 13, 2008
Greg Maddux and the Padres were brilliant on Sunday. They pitched a shutout against the Dodgers. Maddux took care of the first five innings and allowed only two hits. Four reliever combined to serve up three hits over the final four frames. Maddux is now 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA on the season.

Our View:We hear this Maddux guy is pretty good. The kid has a bright future. Oh, and happy 42nd birthday, Greg.
April 7, 2008
Greg Maddux turned in a very Maddux-like performance on Monday as he limited the to a single run over seven innings to pick up the victory. Maddux showed off his gold glove skills on defense snaring multiple balls hit up the middle which helped to limit the Giants to only three hits and two walks on the day.
March 14, 2008
Greg Maddux only got in about half of his scheduled outing Thursday after taking a line drive off his thigh, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "It's the perfect place to get hit," said Maddux. "It's a minor contusion. No worries – for me, anyway. I ain't worried about it. Perfect spring training injury. It's got me out of running the next couple of days." Assuming he's back in action for his next scheduled outing, the ailment shouldn't affect him for the beginning of the season.
March 4, 2008
Greg Maddux enjoyed a strong performance in his first outing of spring training, using just 18 pitches to compile six outs in the Padres’ 9-6 win over San Francisco in Cactus League action today, according to ESPN. 16 of Maddux’ 18 pitches were strikes.
February 12, 2008
Greg Maddux dropped a bombshell on the Daily Herald Monday telling the paper this could be his last season in baseball. He will consider retirement during the offseason. When asked how long he planned to pitch, rather than the usual answer, the 41-year-old Maddux paused, "My son, Chase, is gonna be 11 here pretty soon and I want to start watching him play a little bit more. I think it's about time for me to watch him instead of him coming to the park to watch me,'' said Maddux. "I'm set to play this year, and we'll see what happens after that.'' Maddux's Hall of Fame career includes more than 350 wins, 3,300 strikeouts, 5,000 innings, 700 starts, 20,000 batters faced, 17 Gold Gloves, four Cy Youngs, eight all-star selections, 12 postseason appearances and four ERA titles. He's going to wind up seventh or eighth all time in victories, at somewhere around 360, which is staggering if you actually stop and think about more than 130 years of baseball history.
