Ruben Amaro Jr. has signed a three-year deal to become the Phillies' new GM, replacing Pat Gillick, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Amaro worked under former GM Ed Wade for seven seasons and the last three with Gillick. He was considered the front-runner for the job after Gillick said this would be his last season. Amaro's father was a shortstop with the Phillies from 1960-1965, and Amaro served as a batboy with the club in 1980.

Ryan Howard broke out of a playoff slump in Game 4 of the World Series. The big man slugged two home runs and finished with five RBI and three runs scored in Philadelphia's 10-2 win over Tampa Bay.

Our View:It was only a matter of time before one of the game's top sluggers broke out. If he stays hot, the Phillies will be nearly impossible to stop.
October 24, 2008
Count Ryan Howard as one who believes that it's only a matter of time before he and his teammates turn around their slumping ways at the plate, according to the Phillies Official Website. "For us, we're not going to panic. We know now that if we get into those types of situations, we'll try to take advantage of them."

Our View:We wish we could share his optimism. The Phillies are 1-for-28 with RISP in two World Series games and hitters all up and down the order are slumping. Still, the Phillies are tied one game apiece with the Rays despite the struggles, so you have to like their chances if the big fellas can get it going.
October 22, 2008
Ryan Howard's frustrating 2008 playoffs continued in Game 1 of the World Series. Howard was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. The first baseman also stranded four runners. The silver lining is the Phillies still won Game 1.

Our View:Howard is 8-for-38 in the 2008 playoffs and has not hit a home run.
October 15, 2008
Ryan Howard finally came through as he produced three hits in four trips to the plate on Wednesday night in the Phillies series clinching victory over the Dodgers to move on to the World Series.

Our View:Howard only has three RBI and a .258 average through nine games which only heightens the props that should be given to his teammates as Howard has been a virtual black hole of offense in these playoffs.
October 10, 2008
The mother of Phillies manager Charlie Manuel passed away this morning, according to the L.A. Daily News.

Our View:Despite this, Manuel is still expected to manage the team in Game 2 of the NLCS.
October 7, 2008
Despite probably receiving a large raise in arbitration, the Philadelphia Phillies will not be trading first baseman Ryan Howard this season, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.com.

Our View:There had been speculation that because Howard will probably set a record for the highest arbitration ever awarded that the team would look to move him, but that does not seem to be the case.
October 5, 2008
Ryan Howard went 0-for-3 on Sunday with a walk, a run scored and a strikeout for the Phillies who are moving on to face the Dodgers in the NLCS.

Our View:In four games in the first round Howard had just one RBI while going 2-for-11 (.182) at the plate. The club will certainly need a better effort from their enormous slugger if they hope to move on to the World Series.
October 4, 2008
Ryan Howard went 2-for-4 and registered the Phillies' lone RBI in Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Brewers in Game 3 of the NLDS at Miller Park. He hit a single and a double.

Our View:Philadelphia still leads the best-of-five series 2-1, and Howard recorded his first RBI of the postseason in the loss.
October 3, 2008
MLB.com reports that twice in this NLDS, the Brewers have intentionally walked Ryan Howard with a man on second base and first base open. Twice, they have unintentionally walked him with no one on base. And though so many free passes may seem to be an unnecessary precaution, the strategy has worked. "It's still a little bit frustrating," Howard said of the way the Brewers have pitched around him. "But having gone through it, you have the understanding for it. You know how to deal with it."

Our View:Howard hit .352 with 11 home runs and 32 RBIs, coming through for the Phillies in nearly every critical situation. Expect teams to continue and pitch around the slugger for the remainder of the playoffs.
October 1, 2008
Slugger Ryan Howard drew three walks against the Brewers during Wednesday's 3-1 win in Game 1 of the NLDS.

Our View:Howard struck out in his other at bat. In 2008, the game's premeir slugger walked 81 times while striking out on 199 occasions. Expect him to draw at least 10 walks per series throughout the playoffs.
September 29, 2008
Ryan Howard has been selected as the NL Player of the Month for September, according to the AP. In September, he batted .352 with 11 home runs and 32 RBI while posting a slugging percentage of .852 and an on-base percentage of .422.

Our View:He led the majors in home runs (48) and RBI (146) and helped the Phillies nail down their second straight NL East title. Howard is also a candidate for the MVP award.
September 26, 2008
Ryan Howard went 2-for-4 with four RBI in Friday's 8-4 win over the Nationals. He hit a double and a three-run homer.

Our View:He has now homered in back-to-back games and has 48 for the season, surpassing his total of 2007. He helped reduce the Phillies' magic number to two for the AL East crown.
September 24, 2008
The AP reports that Ryan Howard's errant throw to second allowed the Braves to tack on three more runs in the fifth inning in Wednesday night's 10-4 loss. Howard went 1-for-4 with a solo home run off of Jo-Jo Reyes. He also struck out for the 196th time this season.

Our View:Hopefully MVP voters took note. Howard leads the Phillies with 18 errors.
September 21, 2008
Ryan Howard is making his annual late season push for MVP honors as he is hitting .348 in September with nine home runs and 27 RBI in 19 games, according to the Phillies Official Website.

Our View:Howard may lead baseball in home runs (46) and RBI (141) but his batting average (247) would be the worst ever for an MVP, his OBP is just .334, and his OPS isn't even .900. If that's an MVP-like season then we'll have to go back to college to take advanced baseball principles because we must have slept through the section on what it means to be an MVP.
September 19, 2008
Ryan Howard continued to build his impressive power numbers with a three-run shot on Friday in Florida. He now has 46 home runs and 141 RBI.

Our View:Howard is making a strong case to give an MVP award to a .248 hitter. If the Phillies make the playoffs behind his bat, it is a real possibility. He has nine home runs and 27 RBI in 17 games this month.
September 17, 2008
Ryan Howard was 1-for-3 Wednesday night against the Braves and drove in his 137th run of the year.

Our View:In Howard's last 10 games he has driven in 18 runs and hit six home runs. We are sure the 137 RBI and 45 home runs make fantasy owners forget about the .249 average and 190 strikeouts.
September 16, 2008
Ryan Howard had a big night for the Phils Tuesday, picking up four hits, including his 45th homer of the year.

Our View:Howard now has 136 RBI to go along with those 45 homers, which we guess makes up for the .249 batting average and 190 strikeouts.
September 14, 2008
Ryan Howard hit his major league leading 44th home run to drive in his major league leading 133rd run on Sunday.

Our View:Howard can also be proud of the fact that he leads baseball with 189 K though he in in furious race to the finish with Mark Reynolds who has 186.
September 10, 2008
Ryan Howard blasted his 42nd home run of the year on Wednesday, the most in the majors, though he also picked up his 189th K, also the most in the league.

Our View:This Ryan Howard for MVP talk is just crazy. The power numbers are great, he also has 126 RBI, but the man is on pace for the first 200-K season in history and he is batting just .241, not to mention that his OPS is lower than that of Brian Giles.
September 9, 2008
Ryan Howard's average may only be .241 but he continues to hit the ball over the wall. Howard hit his 41st home run on the year Tuesday night and now has 125 RBI.

Our View:Like we said, even though his average is low and is his on-base percentage but you can not go wrong with the inflated power numbers.
September 7, 2008
Ryan Howard hit his 40th home run of the season on Sunday, and is the first Phillies player in team history to have 40 or more home runs three seasons in a row, according to Phillies.com.

Our View:Howard also has 120 RBI, and though his batting average and on-base percentage leave a lot to be desired, fantasy owners can't go wrong with those type of power numbers.
September 3, 2008
Ryan Howard hit his 38th and 39th home runs of the season Wednesday night against the Nationals. Howard finished the night 2-for-4 with four RBI as the Phillies fell to the Nationals 9-7.

Our View:Howard is streaky and could make a late run at 50 home runs.
August 30, 2008
Ryan Howard went 2-for-5 with a solo homer in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Cubs on the north side of Chicago. His other hit was a single.

Our View:Howard notched his 37th homer of the season, with three coming over his last five games.
August 27, 2008
Ryan Howard hit his National League leading 36th home run of the year Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough as the Phillies fell to the Mets 6-3.

Our View:Howard continues to be an all-or-nothing guy as he leads the NL in both HR and RBI, but continues to struggle with his overall average of .228.
August 25, 2008
The Philadelphia Phillies are less than enamored with first baseman Ryan Howard's egregious strikeout total and poor defense, so the team will probably not offer him a long-term deal, and in fact may think about trading him, according to Ken Mandel of Phillies.com.

Our View:With 170 strikeouts in 493 at-bats, Howard has bent sent down on strikes 35 percent of the time. His batting average is also at .227, and his OBP is a mere .316, hardly good enough for a guy who will warrant a huge money deal.
August 22, 2008
Out of the 79 players in the National League, Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard ranks 51st in on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS), according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com. He is behind players like Joey Votto in that category.

Our View:Fantasy players are more than a little familiar with Howard's tough year, but that number really puts it into perspective. Howard's OBP is only .317, and he has struck out 167 times - or 35 percent of his at-bats.
August 7, 2008
Ryan Howard went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Thursday's 3-0 loss to the Marlins at home. He left three men on base.

Our View:He snapped a hot streak, as he racked up six hits and two homers over his previous four outings.
August 2, 2008
Ryan Howard went 1-for-1 and crushed a solo home run in Saturday's close 2-1 victory over the Cardinals. He drew three walks in the game.

Our View:Howard's homer was his 31st of the season, but only his second over his last 13 games.
August 1, 2008
First baseman Ryan Howard loves to play against the Cardinals. In 23 at-bats against the team this season, Howard is hitting an absurd .478/.571/1.174. He faces off against St. Louis is a three-game series starting tonight.

Our View:Howard has five home runs and 14 RBI against St. Louis, which happens to be the city he grew up in. Only against the Braves has he hit for similar power numbers. He also has five home runs with 18 RBI against them, but in 28 more at-bats.
July 25, 2008
Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard went 1-for-4 and nailed his 30th home run of the season as Philly took the 8-2 loss to the Braves.

Our View:That was home run number 10 in the month of July for Howard, who has hits in seven of his past eight games.
July 18, 2008
Ryan Howard hit his twenty-ninth home run of the season in the Phillies 4-2 victory over the Marlins. He now has nine home runs in the month of July. He also walked once and struck out once.

Our View:Pretty typical game for the big guy with a home run and a strike out. Needless to say, his bat has officially come alive in July.
July 11, 2008
Ryan Howard took Diamondbacks' starter Doug Davis yard in the second inning on Friday.

Our View:Howard now has eight home runs in his past 10 games. He has 16 RBI in that stretch bringing his total to 84 on the season.
July 10, 2008
Ryan Howard hit two home runs and had three RBI in the Phillies 4-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. He went 5-for-9 in the series, with three home runs.

Our View:Howard's average is now above .230, and he now has a 13-game hitting streak. This is good news for fantasy owners, who are being rewarded for their patience with Howard and his low batting average.
July 9, 2008
Philadelphia first baseman Ryan Howard continues to get back on track, leading his Phillies to a 4-2 win over the Cardinals this evening. Howard went 2-for-3 at the dish with one walk and his 25th homer of the season, totaling two RBIs and one run scored on the night.

Our View:Howard appears to be ready to reward those fantasy owners that held steady, hitting .333 through the early games of July heading into tonight's strong outing. He now has five homers with 12 RBIs and six runs scored through nine games this month.
July 6, 2008
Ryan Howard picked up four more whiffs on Sunday to bring his sickening total to 123 on the season. The Phillies lost 4-2 in 12 innings.

Our View:It continues to be all or nothing with the former MVP who is on a record-setting pace for strikeouts. One would speculate that, barring injury, he will soon be the new strikeout king, almost destroying his fantasy value in leagues where strikeouts count against you.
July 5, 2008
Ryan Howard socked his 23rd home run of the season on Saturday leading to three RBI to give him 76 on the year.

Our View:Care to hazard a guess as to what Howard did in the two AB where he didn't hit a home run? If you need us to tell you, then you just haven't been paying attention. He has 119 K in 88 games in case you were wondering.
July 4, 2008
Ryan Howard went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Friday's close 3-2 win over the Mets at home. Both of his hits were singles.

Our View:Howard collected his 73rd RBI of the season, and extended his hitting streak to seven games.
July 3, 2008
Ryan Howard hit a solo home run helping the Philadelphia Phillies defeat the Atlanta Braves by the score of 4-1 on Thursday night.

Our View:The home run was the big first baseman's 22nd of the season. Howard went 1-for-4 in the game, a percentage that unfortunately raises his average. Howard came into Thursday's game hitting .219 and exited with a .220 average, this in 324 at-bats.
July 2, 2008
The Phillies piled on the hits as they took the wood to Atlanta this evening, winning 7-3. Much to the delight of the fans in Philly, it was first baseman Ryan Howard serving as the offensive catalyst, going 1-for-4 at the dish with one walk and his 21st home run of the season, totaling three RBIs and one run scored on the night.

Our View:Howard's average is still horrendous (.219), but he failed to garner a single strikeout on the evening and is showing signs of improvement. He hit five homers for 26 RBIs last month and has hits in each of his last five games.
June 16, 2008
Ryan Howard had another big night on Monday night as he hit two opposite field home runs on his way to three hits and four RBI for the Phillies.

Our View:Howard has nine hits over the last four games during which time he has gone deep four times with 13 RBI thanks to three games in the stretch with four, four and five RBI. He might only be hitting .224, but the 19 home runs and 62 RBI are certainly strong enough to help one overlook that average.
June 15, 2008
Ryan Howard went 2-for-4 and collected four RBI in Sunday's 7-6 loss to the Cardinals. He hit one double and one single.

Our View:That was the third time in his last seven games that he recorded four or more RBI, with five coming on June 13 in the series opener against St. Louis. He has 58 RBI for the season.
June 13, 2008
Ryan Howard went 3-for-5 and hit his 16th home run off Cardinals starter Todd Wellemeyer, a game that saw the Philadelphia rout St. Louis 20-2 on Friday night.

Our View:Howard added a three-run shot in the sixth off Mark Worrell for his 14th career multihomer game, the second this season.
June 11, 2008
Ryan Howard went 0-for-3 with another strikeout on Wednesday, his 90th, to drop his average to .208.

Our View:How many times has Albert Pujols struck out 90-times in a season? Try once in his rookie year when he had 93. Howard certainly is no Pujols, but his strikeout rate continues to be alarming.
June 8, 2008
It has been a season of struggle for first baseman Ryan Howard in Philadelphia, but today he got on the plate and mashed the ball around the yard in support of the 6-3 win over Atlanta. Howard went 3-for-4 at the dish with three doubles, posting four RBIs on the day.

Our View:Howard was just 6-for-29 through June coming into today after hitting just .238 through May. He totaled more RBIs today than he has posted in his last seven games, though he has not hit a homer since May 30th.
June 4, 2008
The Phillies suffered the 2-0 loss to the Cincinnati Reds this evening, totaling just two hits as an entire team on the night. First baseman Ryan Howard went 1-for-4, outfielder Geoff Jenkins went 1-for-4, and the rest of the team went 0-for-24.

Our View:Howard is struggling mightily to break out of this funk he's in, and at the end of May, it appeared he was starting to get back on track, going 3-for-13 with eight walks, three strikeouts, eight RBIs, and eight runs scored. However, through four games in June, he is just 3-for-15 with zero walks, six strikeouts, one RBI, and one run scored.
May 22, 2008
Ryan Howard blasted his 13th home run of the season on his way to three hits, three runs and two RBI for the Phils.

Our View:This was Howard's sixth home run in nine games, and though he has three hits and is now batting .207, the two AB where he didn't get a hit he struck out leaving him with an astounding 71 K in 49 games.
May 21, 2008
Ryan Howard's batting average is south of the Mendoza line, but he's at least giving owners nice power totals. The first baseman had a double and a pair of homers in Wednesday's 12-2 thrashing of the Nationals. Howard has 12 dingers and 29 ribbies on the year, to go along, unfortunately, with a .195 average.

Our View:Might we be seeing the beginning of Howard's patented hot streaks? Only time will tell.
May 20, 2008
Philadelphia pulled the hard-fought 1-0 win over Washington this evening, but first baseman Ryan Howard continues to struggle for comfort. Howard went 0-for-3 at the dish with strikeouts in all but one of his plate appearances.

Our View:This brings Howard to eight walks versus an astounding 30 strikeouts for the month of May, and while the home run touch has been a bit more prevalent this month, the inability to approach .200 in the batting average column is growing increasingly worrisome for the man once viewed as the game's top power hitter.
May 18, 2008
Ryan Howard blasted his 10th home run of the season on Sunday for the Phillies, and with two hits he is now batting .191 on the year.

Our View:Of course, Howard still had a strikeout on the afternoon, but this was his fourth home run over the last eight games as his bat is slowly starting to heat up. Now might be the last chance to acquire him on the cheap.
May 15, 2008
Ryan Howard homered for the third time in five games on Monday, though of course he also struck out in the game.

Our View:That's nine home runs and 58 K for Howard who continues to be a vexing mix of power and whiffs in the early going.
May 13, 2008
Ryan Howard is batting .171 with a hideous 54 K in just 140 AB, but don't count his manager as someone is overly worried, according to MLB.com. "All players go through it," manager Charlie Manuel said. "Go back and look. Sometimes players go a long time before they hit a home run. They'll go 30, 40 at-bats before they get a hit. Sometimes, you know what you're doing wrong and you can't stop it. That's the game. That's the nature of the game. ... Howard's going to hit."

Our View:Well at least someone has confidence in him. Howard has been the biggest disappointment in the game this season absolutely killing his fantasy squads batting average in the process. Howard is too good not to break out, but even if he does, will he hit .250 this year?
May 10, 2008
The Phillies managed just four hits in today's 8-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants, but one of those hits and one of those runs happens to carry a ton of optimism for Philly moving forward. 1B Ryan Howard went 1-for-4, hitting his seventh home run of the season.

Our View:Howard is struggling in a major way, fighting to get his batting average to .200 (not a number you want to aim for). This is his first home run since May 1st and one of just five hits he has this month. Hopefully, the former MVP will use this homer to get back on track.
May 8, 2008
In our daily look at the plight of Ryan Howard, today was a good day as he went 1-for-4 with an RBI and only one K.

Our View:Pretty awful when this qualifies as a good day isn't it?
May 7, 2008
Ryan Howard struck out three more time in going 0-for-4 to drop his average down to .163 on the year.

Our View:This is way past alarming folks. Howard has 50, yes 50, K in 123 AB putting Howard on a pace to annihilate the all-time strike record that he currently owns of 199. There is no way the Phillies would bench him, though honestly, the team should consider it at this point. No matter what they do, the simply must drop him down in the order, he is killing the team in the cleanup spot.
May 3, 2008
On Thursday we noted Philadelphia 1B Ryan Howard was struggling with, at that time, 39 strike outs in 103 at-bats, and advised fantasy owners should exercise patience. Howard is officially struggling to maintain patience as well, ejected after striking out for the third time in the Phillies' 6-5 win over the Giants.

Our View:Howard went 0-for-5 with three total strike outs, bringing him to 42 Ks on 108 ABs.
May 1, 2008
Ryan Howard went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI including his sixth home run of the season on Thursday.

Our View:Howard is hitting only .184 thanks to a massive 39 K in just 103 AB meaning that he is striking out in almost 38% of his AB. All those punchouts are putting a terrible drain on his production, but you know that Howard will catch fire and put up those big power numbers by the end of the year. Be patient.
April 27, 2008
The Philadelphia Phillies are hoping 1B Ryan Howard is on his way to better results at the plate after the powerful swinger took a 1-2 pitch from Pittsburgh's Matt Morris (now unemployed) into the stands in the first inning of yesterday's 8-4 win over the Pirates, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Howard has struggled to find his groove, batting just .174 with four home runs, nine RBIs, and 35 strike outs through 86 at-bats heading into yesterday's contest. Manager Charlie Manuel had given Howard two days off to recollect and envision better returns. Howard did enter those days as pinch hitter but reports the time away from action was just what the doctor ordered. "I had some good swings in batting practice (on Friday) and I put in some work (on Thursday) in Milwaukee as well. (Saturday) I just went out there nice and loose, just trying to see it and just spread it around a little bit, trying to carry it over to the game," Howard told reporters after the game. The Phillies need Howard to get back to his MVP form as quickly as possible and the hope is that the launch yesterday will lead to a reversal of fortunes.
April 26, 2008
Ryan Howard is expected to return to the Phillies' lineup tonight, according to The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He has been benched the last two games due to his .174 start over 86 at-bats, with 35 strikeouts.

Our View:You'll want to start him as your first round pick, but he remains a risky fantasy option due to his slump. Hopefully he will benefit from the time off, and took extra hitting practice before Friday's game.
April 25, 2008
Ryan Howard is expected to sit against the Pirates tonight, according to MLB.com. The Phillies are facing Pirates' lefty Zach Duke, and Manager Charlie Manuel wants to give Howard another day to clear his head during his current slump.

Our View:Howard has four homers over 85 at-bats, but with 34 strikeouts and only 15 hits. He isn't playing up to high expectations as a first round fantasy pick, but you can use that to your advantage by trying to lure him away from a disappointed owner.
April 24, 2008
Ryan Howard was held out of the Phillies' lineup today, according to MLB.com. Manager Charlie Manuel gave him the day off to clear his head during his current slump and stated, "I think he's trying too hard. I think he thinks that in one swing he can get 10 hits. I didn't want to sit him down, but I think it's time. I think it will be good for him to sit there and watch the game and get things off his mind."

Our View:Howard has four homers, but only nine RBI, with a mere 15 hits over 83 at-bats (with 32 strikeouts). He gravely isn't playing up to high expectations as a first round fantasy pick, but you can use that to your advantage by trying to lure him away from a disappointed owner for a reduced price.
April 22, 2008
Philadelphia 1B Ryan Howard can't seem to get things going at the plate and continued to struggle tonight as his Phillies put the Colorado Rockies in the loss column, 8-6. Howard went 0-for-4 at the plate with two strike outs and one walk.

Our View:Howard has just one home run, six hits, and three RBIs in his last eight games and needs to find his groove to keep panic from settling in the fantasy ranks.
April 18, 2008
Ryan Howard continued his awful start to the season by going 0-for-4 to lower his season average to .197 on Friday night.

Our View:Howard was hitting .222 after 35 games last season but still managed to hit .268 on the year. Howard does have four home runs this year, but he needs to do more than pop the odd long ball to produce as he should.
April 15, 2008
Struggles continue for Phillies 1B Ryan Ryan Howard , going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in tonight's 3-4 win over the Houston Astros.

Our View:Howard has three homers on the season but has struggled to get his batting average to .200.
April 12, 2008
Ryan Howard hit his third home run of the season on Saturday, he also had two RBI, though he is still hitting just .205 through 44 AB.

Our View:Howard continues to strike out more often than the sun comes up as he now has 17 in just 12 games. As long as he continues to swing and miss so frequently, his average will continue to languish well below the .300 mark.
April 11, 2008
Ryan Howard has a poor track record against Carlos Zambrano, today's opposing pitcher for Chicago, according to MLB.com. Over his career, Howard is only 2-for-10 against the Cubs' ace. This is not good, as Howard is currently only hitting .189 over 37 at-bats.
March 25, 2008
Ryan Howard went 1-for-3 with two strikeouts against the Yankees on Monday. His spring average remains strong at .315 and he should remain one of the first fantasy players picked in your draft.
March 20, 2008
Ryan Howard blasted his fifth homer of the spring on Thursday, at the expense of Ian Snell of the Pirates. He collected his 10th RBI as well today, and his average sits at .327.
March 15, 2008
Ryan Howard blasted his fourth home run of the spring on Saturday, and is batting .378 (14-for-37) with 30 total bases. Howard is among the favorites to lead the league in home runs this season.
March 9, 2008
Ryan Howard hit his second home run of the spring on Sunday. The Phillies bagman won his arbitration this winter and will earn 10 large for the season. Arguably the top fantasy first baseman, a healthy Howard will battle Prince Fielder for the home run title this summer.
February 21, 2008
Ryan Howard won his arbitration case on Thursday, according to MLB.com, and will earn $10 million this season. The $3 million gap between the two sides was largest among all of the arbitration cases this year.

An arbitration panel will rule Thursday on Ryan Howard's hearing against the Phillies. The first baseman will get $10 if he wins and $7 million if he loses. Either way, the former MVP is in line for a huge raise, considering he made $900,000 last year. "I'm always upbeat," Howard said in the AP. "I'll be upbeat regardless. Either way, it is what it is."

Ryan Howard's arbitration hearing with the Phillies began this morning, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The two parties are $3 million apart, so it figures to be a lengthy hearing, and the results might not be announced for another 24 hours.

Ryan Howard appears headed to arbitration as he and the Phils still cannot bridge the gap between the $10 million he asked for and the $7 million that was offered. The hearing is scheduled for February 20th. This whole thing seems stupid. The only reason Howard is in this spot is cause the team needlessly blocked his ascension to the majors with Jim Thome or he would likely have two more season's under his belt. Regardless, things could get ugly in the arbitration process so why not just sign the slugger to a huge deal and be done with it? If it doesn't get worked out, look for Howard to take out his frustration on opposing pitchers this season. Philadelphia Enquirer

The arbitration case between Ryan Howard and the Phillies isn't scheduled to be heard until Feb. 20 -- the next-to-last day of the process -- if the two sides don't reach a deal beforehand, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. Howard, who has led the majors in both home runs (105) and RBI (285) over the last two years, has asked for $10 million in 2008. The Phillies have offered $7 million. That's the largest gap of any of the 48 players who exchanged numbers this year.
