The Indians are trying to trade for a utility infielder who could push Jhonny Peralta in 2007, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. If not, they'll look to Hector Luna to compete with Peralta during spring training. Peralta is coming off a disappointing 2006 campaign after breaking out the previous year.

Indians manager Eric Wedge said he held Jhonny Peralta out of the past three games to get a look at Hector Luna at shortstop, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "Jhonny has struggled on this trip offensively, but this was more about Hector," Wedge said. "I wanted to see him play the same position for two or three days. Jhonny will be back in there Tuesday."

Manager Eric Wedge gave Jhonny Peralta the day off again on Tuesday and said that Peralta would get three straight days off, including the off day on Monday, according to the AP. Peralta is expected to be back in the lineup on Wednesday. The Indians shortstop is hitting just .225 on the season, and has three hits in his last 39 ABs. Ramon Vazquez started in Peralta's place and batted ninth.

Hitting just .236 this season, Jhonny Peralta was pulled from the No. 3 spot in the batting order on Tuesday, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He batted sixth, and the three players who had been following him in the order moved up a spot, so Travis Hafner hit third, Victor Martinez cleanup and Ben Broussard before Peralta. "Jhonny's swing is coming around, but he just hasn't had a lot to show for it," said manager Eric Wedge. "We just want to let him catch his breath a little."

Jhonny Peralta signed a five-year contract extension with the Indians on Friday, according to the AP. Financial terms were not disclosed. The deal includes a team option for 2011. "We are excited to sign another one of our dynamic, young players to a long-term contract," Indians GM Mark Shapiro said. "Adding Jhonny Peralta to the current group of players already under contract solidifies a strong core of position players that will help to ensure a championship future."
