With Omar Vizquel's departure through free agency, it appears that the Indians will have Jhonny Peralta and Brandon Phillips compete for the starting shortstop job this spring. However, GM Mark Shapiro told the Akron Beacon Journal that he would not rule out signing a veteran player to compete for the job.

Jhonny Peralta made his first big league start at third base on Saturday. Peralta played shortstop and third base for Triple-A Buffalo this season, but his future in the majors is believed to be in the middle infield.

The Indians recalled Jhonny Peralta from Triple-A Buffalo. Peralta hit .326 with 15 homers in 138 games. He should get a handful of starts at shortstop or third base the final two weeks of the season.
