Player Notes
June 25, 2008
Jhonny Peralta wasn't in the staring lineup on Wednesday night as he was replaced in the starting lineup by Jorge Valendia who made his first start of the year, according to MLB.com.

Our View:With Asdrubal Cabrera tearing up Triple-A hitting .456 in 14 games, Valendia's days in a Indians uniform are likely to come to an end very soon.

Jhonny Peralta went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Wednesday's loss to the White Sox. It was his third long ball over the last five games.

Our View:Peralta has hit slightly better since being benched a week ago, but he remains basically a homer-or-nothing guy. His 11 bombs are nice, but his .225 average makes him look like Juan Uribe.

Jhonny Peralta returned to the Indians' lineup on Wednesday after being benched for two straight games due to poor play, but he did not benefit from the time off to clear his head, as he went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts against the rival White Sox.

Our View:Peralta is only hitting .219 over 146 at-bats, and is playing way below his potential.

Jhonny Peralta was benched for the second straight game due to lapses in concentration, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He leads the team with eight homers but made two fielding errors on Sunday, and Manager Eric Wedge stated, " He needs to be better than that. It can't happen. He's far enough along in his career where he shouldn't have stretches like that. You're going to have bad days. But you can't lose focus defensively or give away at-bats. You just can't do that. I gave Jhonny the day off Sunday. We had the off-day Monday, and I gave him another day today. So we'll give him a nice little break. He was out here early taking batting practice. I had a chance to talk to him, too. Hopefully, it will help get him back on track. I want him to be more consistent. Jhonny has such great potential to be a very good hitter and a very good player. We've seen signs of it. I just want him to be more consistent."

Our View:Wedge is trying to spark the offense, and Peralta could benefit from the time off to clear his head. He is only hitting .225 over 142 at-bats.

Jhonny Peralta went 2-for-3 with one RBI and hit his seventh homer of the season in Thursday's 4-2 win over Oakland. He drew one walk and scored three runs as well.

Our View:That was only his fourth RBI over 13 games in May. That was his first homer in his last nine games as well, and is still only batting .221 for the season.
