The Mets are expected to offer free agent Oliver Perez salary arbitration, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View:If Perez accepts, the Mets retain the lefthander in the rotation for another campaign, but for more than the $6.5 million he made in 2008. If he doesn't, the Mets could get a first and second-round draft selection plus a sandwich pick as compensation for losing a Type-A free agent. Perez is looking for a big payday, and will likely decline their offer.
November 24, 2008
The Mets do not expect to retain Oliver Perez as they believe agent Scott Boras will set his price tag too high, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View:Perez was previously believed to be an option for the Braves. The Mets would consider trading for Javier Vazquez and remain interested in free agent Jon Garland, both of which are coming off a disappointing season.
November 15, 2008
Buster Olney of ESPN.com believes Oliver Perez could be an option for the Braves now that they ended their bid to acquire Jake Peavy.

Our View:Perez can be erratic and has control issues, but there is no denying he has good stuff. He could prove to be a solid acquisition for Atlanta, and would benefit from a fresh start with a new club.
October 31, 2008
Oliver Perez has filed for free agency, according to the AP.

Our View:The early word from New York is that Perez will look for a five-year deal worth more than $10 million per season. The Mets are expected to make him a reasonable offer, but won't likely be good enough for him to remain with the club.
September 24, 2008
Oliver Perez battled control issues again on Wednesday night much the way he has over the past month. In 4.1 innings he walked five Cubs while allowing six hits and five runs.

Our View:He threw 105 pitches in the abbreviated appearance and struck out six batters. He has walked 23 hitters over his past six starts.
September 14, 2008
Oliver Perez didn't record a victory on Sunday but he was still solid allowing two runs over seven innings against the Braves. Perez walked three and struck out eight on the day.

Our View:This was a nice bounce back for Perez who was bombed last time out against the Nats. Still, his up and down nature continues to mark him as one of the more maddening arms to own in the fantasy game.
September 9, 2008
It was not a good night for Oliver Perez against the Nationals only going 3.1 innings giving up seven runs. Even though Perez did not have a good night he was not saddled with the loss.

Our View:Perez's ERA has climbed above four after this start but should still be considered for starts late in the season for your fantasy team.
September 4, 2008
Oliver Perez has pitched very well of late allowing two or fewer earned runs in 11 of his last 17 starts as he heads toward a big payday this off-season as one of the biggest arms on the free agent market, according to the New York Post.

Our View:Guess who his agent is? Yep, Scott Boras. Given his performance of late, and his unquestionably top shelf shelf stuff, the 27 year old Perez will likely be looking for at least $60 million on a five year deal according to the report. Will the Mets pony up the dinero to keep him in the fold?
September 3, 2008
Oliver Perez collected his tenth win of the season as the Mets defeated the Brewers 9-2 Wednesday. Perez scattered two runs off five hits and five walks in 6.2 innings of work.

Our View:Perez continues to be a solid option for the Mets. He now has posted a quality start in 11 of his last 13 starts.
August 24, 2008
Mets LHP Oliver Perez watched a good outing go to waste today as his Mets fell 6-4 to the Astros. Perez pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on four hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Our View:Perez walked with no decision as the relief pitching gave way. Over his last four starts Perez is 2-0 with 26 1/3 innings pitched for 10 combined earned runs, 12 walks, 27 strikeouts, and no homers surrendered.
August 14, 2008
Oliver Perez struck out eight batters in 6.2 innings while allowing just three runs to pick up his ninth win of the season in the Mets 9-3 win over the Nationals.

Our View:Perez June 24, Perez has given up more than three earned runs just one time. He has been throwing extremely well and has a place in all fantasy formats.
August 8, 2008
Oliver Perez allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings against the Marlins on Friday night. Perez improved to 8-7 in lowering his ERA to 3.90.

Our View:In case you hadn't realized it, Perez has been dealing of late allowing two or fewer earned runs in seven of his last eight games as his ERA has fallen from 5.29 to its current level.
August 5, 2008
The Mets report Oliver Perez has been penciled into the start on Friday against Florida, working on four-days rest, due to the injury suffered by John Maine, according to the New York Post.

Our View:This leaves the Mets without a solidified arm for Saturday, leading to speculation that LHP Jon Niese could be the man for the job. We'll keep you posted.
August 3, 2008
Oliver Perez didn't walk a single batter on Sunday in six innings against the Astros, but he still lost for the seventh time this season as he permitted four runners to cross the plate.

Our View:Perez had allowed only four earned runs in his last three starts, so a bit of a step back today wasn't unexpected. The good news is that he didn't walk anybody, so you can overlook the runs he allowed on this afternoon.
July 29, 2008
Oliver Perez went six innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five and earning his seventh win against the Marlins.

Our View:Perez has a sparkling 1.35 ERA in July and has not surrendered more than two earned runs in a game in over a month.
July 24, 2008
Oliver Perez struck out 12 Phillies in 7.2 innings on Thursday. He allowed on earned run on six hits and a walk. He did not factor in the decision.

Our View:In his last five starts, Perez has a 1.34 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 33.2 IP. However, he is just 1-1 in that stretch.
July 11, 2008
Oliver Perez worked his third straight impressive start on Friday against the Rockies. Although he didn't factor in the decision, he allowed just two hits and one run over six innings while striking out seven. However, Oliver gave up an alarming six walks.

Our View:Walks have been an issue with Perez all season. The good news is that it appears he has found some new consistency under his new pitching coach. His runs are down and his strikeouts are up.
July 7, 2008
Oliver Perez, who posted his second consecutive quality start, put a strangle-hold on the Phillies allowing just six base-runners in seven shutout innings Sunday. Perez struck out six and has now allowed just one earned run and nine base runners in the last two starts (14 innings).

Our View:Do we credit a maturing Perez, or the new staff of the Mets, particularly Dan Warthen, the pitching coach? Warthen has been a pitching coach for the Tigers, Padres and Mariners, and most recently filled the same role for Triple-A New Orleans.
July 7, 2008
Skipper Jerry Manuel praised Oliver Perez after hurling seven shutout innings against the Phillies on Sunday, according to MetsBlog.com. Manuel said, "Perez was awesome. He pitched extremely well. His last inning might have been one of his better innings of the night. So, that tells you he may have the endurance to even go further."

Our View:Over his last two starts, since making an adjustment to his delivery, Perez has pitched 14 innings, while allowing just one run and two walks while fanning 14.
July 6, 2008
Oliver Perez threw seven shut-out innings against the Phillies on Sunday. He struck out six and allowed just six hits against the opposition's vaunted lineup. He did not figure in the decision.

Our View:It appears Perez's new motion is doing wonders for him. In his last two appearances, against the Yankees and the Phillies, he has given just one run, seven hits, two walks and 14 strikeouts in 13 innings.
June 30, 2008
Oliver Perez changed his delivery prior to Sunday's gem against the Yankees as he only allowed one earned run over seven innings, with no walks and eight strikeouts, according to the NY Post. Perez worked with pitching coach Dan Warthen during a side session on Friday, and Manager Jerry Manuel commented following Sunday's performance, "This adjustment that he did seemed to carry him throughout the game. Dan moved his feet around a little bit and got him a little rhythm, and he stayed with it."

Our View:During his new windup, Perez is feeling more power while rocking back, and Sunday was the first time that he did not issue a walk in a start. This is good news for fantasy owners as he needs to trim down his 1.47 WHIP. He is 6-5 for the season and could be headed for a solid second half.
June 29, 2008
Oliver Perez won't start again until next Sunday against the Phillies, MLB.com reports. The Mets have altered their rotation and pushed the southpaw back by two days. Perez could pitch in relief on Wednesday or Thursday of this week.

Our View:This news will affect fantasy teams with daily transactions, but it shouldn't alter anyone's outlook too greatly.
June 29, 2008
Oliver Perez hurled a gem in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Yankees, as he only allowed one earned run on three hits over seven innings, with no walks and eight strikeouts. The only run came on a Wilson Betemit homer.

Our View:Perez improved his record to 6-5, and bounced back following two poor outings as he allowed nine total earned runs, and only five strikeouts.
June 25, 2008
Oliver Perez was knocked around at home against the Mariners on Tuesday. He gave up six runs, two home runs, in five innings. The New York Post spoke after the game with manager Jerry Manuel. "I'm definitely concerned about his struggles right now," Manuel said. "And we're going to have to address it at some time." Asked specifically about dropping Perez from the rotation, Manuel avoided any definitive answer. "I don't want to really get that far into it."

Our View:This should certainly get Perez's attention. He has been inconsistent all year, but perhaps the new manager will get him to stay focused.
June 13, 2008
Oliver Perez pitched seven strong innings and the New York Mets beat the Texas Rangers 7-1 on Friday night at Shea. Perez also helped his cause by driving in two runs. Perez allowed one run on three hits, walked three and struck out eight.

Our View:The southpaw has his best stuff in game one of a three-game series against the hard-hitting Rangers. Josh Hamilton lined an 0-1 pitch over the left-field wall with two out in the first, and then Perez didn't allow another hit until Texas starting pitcher Scott Feldman recorded his first career hit in the sixth.
June 13, 2008
Oliver Perez will be on the hill when the Mets host the Rangers tonight in inter-league play, according to MLB.com. Perez is 4-4 with 5.37 ERA and poor 1.59 WHIP over 13 starts this season.

Our View:Perez is hurting fantasy teams with his high ERA and WHIP, and cannot be counted on as a solid source for strikeouts, as he racked up four or less in eight of his 13 starts. Keep him on the bench against a potent Rangers' lineup.
June 8, 2008
Oliver Perez rebounded from three poor efforts in a row to allow one run over 5.1 innings in a no-decision on Saturday.

Our View:Perez walked only two batters while striking out five in the effort, a great turnaround after allowing 11 runs in his last 6.1 innings. He is still up and down from start to start making him extremely difficult to own.
June 2, 2008
Oliver Perez couldn't make it out of the first inning on Monday night. He allowed a homer, double, single, walk, double, homer, and walk before being pulled after getting just one out. The sum total was five runs.

Our View:The Mets-Giants game isn't over yet, but it doesn't matter when it comes to Perez's night. Oli remains an enigmatic, inconsistent hurler who should be on fantasy benches right now.
May 18, 2008
Oliver Perez gave the Mets a great outing on Sunday as he allowed just three hits, two walks and two runs over 7.2 innings in his fourth victory of the season.

Our View:Perez once against struggled at times with the strike one, but overall this was the type of performance that the Mets, and his fantasy owners, will take every time out.
May 11, 2008
Oliver Perez struck out eight Reds en route to his third victory of the season on Sunday. The southpaw allowed three hits and three runs and walked four over six innings. Perez also tossed a wild pitch and hit a batter. He had lost each of his previous three starts.

Our View:It wasn't the prettiest effort, but Oli got the job done. He had been all over the place in his previous three outings, and it's good to see him hone in, at least a little bit.
May 5, 2008
Oliver Perez is set to take the hill tonight when the Mets battle the Dodgers in Los Angeles, according to MLB.com. In two starts against the Dodgers last season, Perez finished 2-0 with a 0.63 ERA.

Our View:Perez has racked up 26 strikeouts over 29 innings, but is having control issues as he also issued 21 walks. He continues to hurt fantasy owners with his 1.69 WHIP and needs to have another solid outing against the Dodgers, like he did in 2007.
May 1, 2008
Closer Billy Wagner commented on Oliver Perez after Perez allowed seven runs while walking five batters through 1.2 innings on Wednesday, according to MetsBlog. Wagner said, "Perez, honestly, has got to step up and know we just used every guy in our bullpen the night before. He can’t come out there and decide that he hasn’t got it today." Perez added, "Sometimes you don’t have your stuff and you have to find what you can do to get out of the innings. I had trouble throwing strikes. Everybody can have a bad day. I’ve been good in the last few games and this is a time to find what you’re doing wrong, to get better, and try to go in the right direction…I think sometimes I’m trying to throw too hard…Tomorrow we’re off, and I can find what I’m doing wrong."

Our View:Perez generally racks up a solid strikeout count, as he has 26 over 29 innings, but he is now 2-2 and he is hurting fantasy owners with his 1.69 WHIP and 4.03 ERA.
April 30, 2008
Oliver Perez had one of those days on Wednesday as he allowed seven runs in just 1.2 innings to pick up his second loss of the year.

Our View:The good news here is that only two of the runs were earned, but Perez had no idea where he was throwing the ball today with five walks. He now has 21 in 29 IP, and unless he considerably improves that ratio, he will continue to blow up on occasion making him a spotty starter in mixed leagues.
April 25, 2008
Oliver Perez showed his Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde side on Thursday. After cruising through four innings against a Nats offense that carries the league's worst team batting average, Perez couldn't find his command the rest of the game, giving up five runs on six hits, walking four and striking out three in 5.2 innings.

Our View: For now, this is what one will get from Perez. His 3.62 ERA, two wins and 24 strikeouts are solid. His 1.54 WHIP and 5.3 BB/9 rate tell us his numbers could actually be much worse.
April 24, 2008
Oliver Perez didn't have his best stuff on Thursday and it showed as he allowed six hits, four walks and five runs in 5.2 innings to pick up his first loss.

Our View:Perez owns a respectable 3.62 ERA after five starts, but that WHIP is in the danger zone at 1.54. Another concern are all the walks, 16 of them, way too many even with his 26 K in 27.1 IP.
April 19, 2008
Oliver Perez pitched 5.2 up and down innings on Saturday, but he held the Phillies scoreless to pick up his second win of the season. Perez struck out seven, but walked five on the day.

Our View:Perez can dominate and strike out 10 at any time, but he can also walk half the batters he faces. Today was a little of both, but the fact that he pitched through it against a touch Phillies squad is a great sign that Perez is ready to make some serious noise this year.
April 13, 2008
Oliver Perez wasted little time in washing away his 0.00 ERA on Sunday. The southpaw served a two-run homer in the first inning and allowed eight hits and six runs over 4.1 frames against the Brewers. Perez ended up with a no-decision and now stands at 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA.

Our View:It obviously wasn't Oli's day, but he earned himself a lot of leeway with two scoreless outings to open the year. We're not concerned.
April 8, 2008
Oliver Perez was solid in a no decision against the Phillies on Tuesday, as he didn't allow a run over 5.2 innings of work, with a mere three hits allowed, and three walks and two strikeouts. The walks were his only flaw for today as the Mets ultimately fell 5-2. Perez is in a nice rhythm over his first two starts.
April 3, 2008
Oliver Perez gained praise from Manager Willie Randolph following his strong winning effort on Wednesday night, according to MetsBlogs.com. Randolph commented, “Man, I could bottle that and put it away…He was awesome tonight…All his pitches were pretty crisp, even his change up…He stayed in his rhythm the majority of the game, that’s the real key for him…He needs to mature. That’s a big part of his development. He needs to be able, when things go wrong, to lock back in and stay focused on the task at hand. Obviously, he’s very capable of doing that, which he showed tonight. He just needs to be able to do it more consistently.” This is encouraging news for the young hurler.
April 2, 2008
Oliver Perez limited the Marlins to just five hits and one walk in six innings on Wednesday to pick up his first victory of the season for the Mets. Perez was dominating on the night with eight punchouts as he channeled his inner Johan Santana. Perez will have to step up to fill the void with the loss of Pedro Martinez, but he will do just fine if he continues to pitch like this.
March 27, 2008
Oliver Perez allowed three earned runs and seven hits over 6.1 innings for the Mets on Thursday. The left-hander walked one and struck out four.
March 23, 2008
Oliver Perez gave up five runs on seven hits (four home runs) over five innings against Cleveland on Saturday, with six strikeouts and two walks. His ERA climbed to 5.79 but he remains penciled in as the Mets' fourth starter in the rotation.
March 22, 2008
Oliver Perez will make his next-to-last spring start Saturday in Winter Haven, Fla., against the Indians, this according to the New York Post. Perez is penciled in as the club's fourth starter behind Johan Santana, Pedro Martinez and John Maine.
March 20, 2008
After forcing things in his first two outings this spring, Mets hard-throwing left-hander Oliver Perez was outstanding against the Nationals on Monday. Perez was in rhythm in his five innings of work. He allowed one earned run, struck out five and didn't walk a batter. The flyball pitcher matured to a degree last year, posting a 15-10 record with a 3.56 ERA. Old Shea Stadium is a solid venue for Perez, and as long as he keeps his walks down, he's a strong mixed league option that's likely to repeat his 2007 statline.
March 17, 2008
Oliver Perez was solid as he earned his first spring win against the Nationals on Monday by allowing one run (unearned) on a mere two hits over five innings of work, with five strikeouts and no walks. He is pitching well this spring for a middle-of-the-rotation starter.
March 12, 2008
Oliver Perez made his third exhibition game start and pitched four efficient innings. The left-hander allowed a run in the first inning and one single in his final three frames. He struck out one and walked none. Oliver remains a backend rotisserie option in mixed formats.
February 22, 2008
Oliver Perez won his salary arbitration case against the Mets on Friday, according to the AP. He'll earn $6.5 million this year rather than the team’s offer of $4,725,000.
