With Cleveland's acquisition of Jamey Carroll, Josh Barfield will likely begin the 2008 season at Triple-A Buffalo, assuming he isn't traded, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Barfield is coming off a horrid season that saw him hit just .243 with three homers in 420 at-bats. There's still potential here, but there's no need to pay him any attention on draft day next year.

Josh Barfield, who was benched earlier this month for rookie Asdrubal Cabrera, went 1-for-2 on Friday in his first start since Aug. 15. He did leave for a pinch-hitter later in the game, however.

Indians manager Eric Wedge has benched Josh Barfield for the foreseeable future. "We're going to play Asdrubal Cabrera and Chris Gomez more," Wedge told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I think it's something we have to do for our team. We need more offense from the bottom of the order. Those two hitters will get the bulk of the playing time." Barfield is hitting .243 on the season and an even worse .185 since the All-Star break. The Indians still like Barfield for their future plans, but they don't have time to be patient with his lack of offense while in the midst of a pennant race.

Josh Barfield was again replaced in the starting lineup on Friday, raising the question as to whether the Indians preferred Asdrubal Cabrera at second base after all, the team's official site reports. Cabrera, whom the Tribe promoted last week, is 3-for-12 so far after skipping from Double-A to Triple-A to Cleveland in 10 days. He has hit .353 with three RBIs and two steals in nine games at Triple-A Buffalo, and has shown promise in the field already at the big-league level. Eric Wedge has yet to say that this switch is permanent, however.

Josh Barfield is in the midst of a 3-for-29 slump and was benched Wednesday, the AP reports. Asdrubal Cabrera got the start in his place, and Eric Wedge has hinted that Cabrera may continue to get regular work at second base.

Josh Barfield hit second in the Indians batting order on Monday for the first time this season. "Wherever I fit, I'm happy," Barfield told the team's official website. "My approach doesn't change at all. I'm still trying to get on and move runners over. It's all the same. I know I won't change." Barfield went 2-for-4 with three RBI on Monday and is hitting .345 so far in June.

Josh Barfield has been struggling all season, but he’s starting to feel more comfortable in his first season with the Indians. “Just not knowing the pitchers was the hardest thing,” Barfield told the Akron Beacon Journal. “Now’s the second time around for us against some of these teams, and I’m feeling more comfortable. But when you’re searching for it and you also aren’t familiar with the pitching, it can get kind of tough.” Barfield is hitting just .208, but he’s hit .333 with eight runs, three RBI, and two stolen bases in his last 11 games.

Manager Eric Wedge hasn't decided whether to bat Josh Barfield ninth and Andy Marte eighth, or vice versa, according to the Plain Dealer. "There are arguments both ways," said Wedge. "We haven't made a final decision." Marte hit eighth and Barfield ninth on Saturday. Wedge also said he thinks Barfield can bat second, but he wants him to get acclimated to the American League first.

Josh Barfield had two hits and his third stolen base of the spring in Wednesday's scoreless tie with Toronto. Barfield batted leadoff for the Tribe, but that was probably due to the fact that Cleveland was without a host of its regulars; he's expected to begin the year in the bottom third of the order. Barfield is hitting .333 this month.
