The Padres sent Josh Barfield to the Indians on Tuesday in exchange for Kevin Kouzmanoff and Andrew Brown, according to the Padres web site. Barfield, who hit .280 with 32 doubles, 13 home runs and 21 steals for San Diego in his rookie season, will be the Tribe's starting second baseman in 2007.

"I don't want to send the wrong message to Josh," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's going to get out there." Barfield, who is hitting just .200, was the No. 8 hitter.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Josh Barfield has outplayed Mark Bellhorn this spring and appears close to securing the starting job at second base. Barfield has hit .480 and played good defense thus far. "He is playing with so much confidence,” manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's done all he can do to be on this club."

Josh Barfield went 4-for-5 with five RBI against the Cubs on Wednesday, including a grand slam in the ninth inning. Barfield is batting .571 (8-for-14) with 11 RBI this spring. He's currently behind Mark Bellhorn in the second base job battle, but he could force the Padres to reconsider their plans if he continues his hot hitting.
