November 20, 2008
Coco Crisp is aiming for 40 steals with the Royals this season, according to their official team website.

Our View:No member of the Royals reached that many steals since Carlos Beltran notched 41 back in 2003. Crisp's personal best is only 28, but has confidence in his abilities and is enthusiastic of helping the Royals climb the ranks of the highly competitive AL Central.
November 19, 2008
Coco Crisp has been dealt from the Red Sox to the Royals in exchange for reliever Ramon Ramirez, according to ESPN Sports Radio 810.

Our View:The Royals acquire speed and a solid center fielder, while the Red Sox get a capable late-game reliever.
November 18, 2008
Peter Gammons of ESPN indicates that Coco Crisp could get traded by Boston in exchange for a reliever.

Our View:The team would add a reliever to the bullpen to allow Justin Masterson to start. If Crisp is traded, the fantasy stock of Jacoby Ellsbury would increase as the full-time center fielder.
November 4, 2008
Coco Crisp is apparently being offered to the Padres for shortstop Khalil Greene, according to the Tacoma News Tribune.

Our View:Jacoby Ellsbury appears to be the center fielder of the future for the Red Sox, and a big reason that Crisp is likely on his way out.
October 18, 2008
Coco Crisp will roam center field and bat leadoff in tonight's Game 6 of the ALCS against the Rays, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Crisp will get the call over struggling rookie Jacoby Ellsbury, who is hitless over 14 at-bats (registered one walk) in the ALCS.
October 16, 2008
Coco Crisp will start in center field and hit leadoff for the Red Sox in Game 5 of the ALCS according to the Boston Globe. He is replacing the slumping Jacoby Ellsbury.

Our View:He was 0-for-2 with two walks in Game 4 and hit .308 in 169 home at-bats this season.
October 11, 2008
Coco Crisp will start in center field and Jacoby Ellsbury moves to right as J.D. Drew is out of the Red Sox lineup against Rays left-hander Scott Kazmir, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View:Drew actually hit lefties at a better rate than he did right-handers, .284 to .279, albeit in fewer at-bats. But he is just 1-for-7 lifetime against Kazmir.
September 27, 2008
Coco Crisp had an injection in his foot to help him play throughout the posteason according to the Boston Herald.

Our View:Crisp will still likely be limited and with Boston's rotation of outfielders, he may see fewer starts in the postseason than anticipated.
September 23, 2008
Coco Crisp did not start Monday night due to a minor injury to the ball of his left foot, according to the Boston Globe. He has been dealing with the ailment for a little over a week.

Our View:His name was nearly penciled into the lineup, but manager Terry Francona decided to wait another day as Crisp was seen limping through the clubhouse. Francona sent him out as a pinch runner in the eighth inning in place of Sean Casey.
September 5, 2008
Coco Crisp went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for Boston while hitting out of the nine-hole. He is hitting .323 in the spot in the batting order.

Our View:Crisp is 21-for-46 his last 13 games and continues to start more often than not. His value continues to inch up.
September 4, 2008
Coco Crisp has been on fire recently, and with his two hits on Wednesday, is now 11-for-24 in his last six games, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Crisp is a nice option in AL-only leagues, as his batting average was keeping him out of consideration for use. He can provide speed, and has 18 stolen bases on the year, and also a little pop from time to time, as he has seven home runs.
July 11, 2008
The Boston Herald reports that Coco Crisp is out of Friday's lineup due to a sore forearm.

Our View:Crisp has not played since Monday, and owners should not count on him until he is back in the lineup.
July 3, 2008
Coco Crisp has completed his suspension and returned to the Boston Red Sox lineup for tonight's game against the Yankees, according to the Boston Globe. Crisp will hit seventh and play center field.

Our View:Crisp retains some value in fantasy play because he can steal a base, but his other numbers leave something to be desired, especially his .313 on-base percentage. He has only walked 12 times in 196 at-bats.
June 27, 2008
The Red Sox found out on Friday that Coco Crisp's suspension was reduced from seven games to five for his part in June 5 brawl with the Rays, this according to the St. Petersburg Times. Crisp will start serving the penalty phase on Saturday in Houston.

Our View:Crisp will also, conveniently, miss the three-game series between the Red Sox and the Rays at the Trop that starts Monday.
June 26, 2008
Coco Crisp is expecting to hear from MLB’s discipline director Bob Watson either today or tomorrow regarding his appeal of a seven-game suspension he was dealt for his part in igniting the June 5 brawl with the Rays, according to the Providence Journal. Crisp said, "I assume I’ll get some kind of notification in the next couple of days, possibly today."

Our View:Crisp registered three doubles last night, and is batting .353 with seven extra-base hits in his last eight games. A suspension would take a very hot bat out of the Red Sox lineup with an important series coming up against the Rays, beginning June 30.
June 23, 2008
A decision on Coco Crisp's appeal of a seven-game suspension for his role in the June 5 bench-clearing brawl with Tampa Bay has yet to have been made, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:You should probably avoid using Crisp this week if you can just in case.
June 20, 2008
Coco Crisp (hand) will be in the lineup for the Red Sox on Friday, this according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Crisp will look to build on his total of 12 steals tonight as the Red Sox take on the Cardinals.
June 19, 2008
The Cubs are not targeting outfielder Coco Crisp, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View:A team source stated that the Cubs have had no talks with the Red Sox regarding Crisp since spring training.
June 19, 2008
Coco Crisp is expected back soon after sustaining a soft-tissue strain on the top of his left hand on Wednesday, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:Manager Terry Francona does not believe the ailment is serious and thinks Crisp may be ready to return to the lineup on Friday night against the Cardinals at Fenway Park.
June 18, 2008
Coco Crisp will have his sore left hand examined in Boston on Thursday, when the Red Sox are off. Manager Terry Francona tells the Boston Globe that the outfielder has a strain on the top, middle portion of his hand. Crisp may be able to play on Friday.

Our View:We should have an update on Crisp within the next day or two, but, again, this doesn't sound serious.
June 18, 2008
Coco Crisp left Wednesday's game in the third inning due to left hand discomfort. He is day-to-day, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:The Red Sox may have more to say after the game, but it doesn't sound too serious.
June 11, 2008
Boston outfielder Coco Crisp has had his appeal of a recent suspension scheduled, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Crisp will have his appeal of the recent seven-game suspension heard by Major League Baseball on June 23rd. He will not be forced to miss any games until that time.
June 7, 2008
Coco Crisp had two hits batting in the leadoff spot in place of injured Jacoby Ellsbury, and Crisp also pulled an "Ellsbury" with two stolen bases.

Our View:Crisp will continue to play until the league rules on his upcoming suspension, and he is vital to the Red Sox lineup until Ellsbury is able to return from his injured wrist.
June 6, 2008
Coco Crisp has appealed the seven-game suspension he received for his involvement in Thursday's brawl with Tampa Bay, according to the AP.

Our View:This isn't a surprise, given that Jacoby Ellsbury is injured. We'll see if he eventually drops the appeal.
June 6, 2008
MLB suspended Coco Crisp seven games for his involvement in Thursday's brawl with Tampa Bay.

Our View:We'll let you know if Crisp decides to appeal. He probably will, at least initially, given Jacoby Ellsbury's injury.
June 5, 2008
Coco Crisp was ejected for inciting a brawl in the Sox and Rays game on Thursday, according to the Associated Press. Crisp was hit by a pitch from James Shields, likely a retaliatory strike for Crisp trying to injure Akinori Iwamura on Wednesday night, and he then charged the mound. Shields threw a huge punch that missed, at which point Crisp got in several punches.

Our View:Crisp will likely be suspended for this, as will Shields. With Jacoby Ellsbury leaving the game due to an injured wrist, the Sox could be very thin in the outfield in the coming week.
June 5, 2008
Coco Crisp has an injured left thumb, but it appears that he will still be in the starting lineup for the Red Sox on Thursday, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:With David Ortiz out of the lineup, the Sox certainly have a spot in the daily lineup for Crisp who brings one of the better gloves in the game. Crisp hasn't offered much this season with a .261 average and just 15 runs scored, but he still remains a viable option in AL Only leagues based on his speed.
June 2, 2008
Coco Crisp went 1-for-2 with one walk on Monday night. The effort is only notable because the outfielder managed to snap an 0-for-23 slump.

Our View:Crisp has seen his average plummet from .315 on May 17 to .246 heading into Monday night. He'd probably be taking more heat if the Red Sox weren't playing so well. We haven't failed to notice that Brandon Moss is tearing it up at Triple-A.
May 20, 2008
Coco Crisp is leading off and playing center field tonight as the Red Sox host the Royals.

Our View:Regular center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury is not in the lineup tonight against KC right-hander Gil Meche.
May 16, 2008
Coco Crisp has been cleared to return to the field after dealing with an illness the past couple of days, according to the Providence Journal. "He feels better,'' said manager Terry Francona. "(But) I don't think he feels terrific. I don't think he's 100 percent yet. Whatever hit him, hit him hard."

Our View:Despite a couple of stops and starts this year, Crisp has been fairly productive when on the field with a .315 average and six SB.
May 14, 2008
Coco Crisp continues to be bothered by headaches and nausea and is not in Wednesday's lineup. "I feel off-and-on better and weird. I woke up feeling better, did some late Mother's Day shopping... but then started feeling sick again," he informs the Boston Globe. "My head is messed up... a heavy-type feeling."

Our View:Crisp must have been watching his game tapes from 2007. Bah doom ching!
May 14, 2008
Coco Crisp left Tuesday's game in the bottom of the sixth inning due to an illness. The Boston Globe explains that a migraine and an upset stomach were both offered as explanations.

Our View:We're not sure of Crisp's status for Wednesday, and we'll update his status when more information becomes available.
May 12, 2008
Coco Crisp is leading off for the Red Sox and starting in center field Monday in Minnesota. It appears that rookie left-hander Jacoby Ellsbury will rest against Twins right-hander Livan Hernandez.

Our View:Crisp has played in 28 games this year and has 10 runs scored, 10 RBI, six stolen bases and is hitting a respectable .317 with a .337 OBP.
May 2, 2008
Coco Crisp is doubtful for tonight's game against the Rays due to a sore left knee. "Coco got a little more tender as the night went but he fought his way through it," manager Terry Francona said in the Boston Herald.

Our View:Francona is hoping J.D. Drew and Jacoby Ellsbury will be ready to play tonight. Consider Crisp day-to-day.
April 25, 2008
According to the Boston Globe, the Coco Crisp trade talk is off. With Bobby Kielty undergoing surgery on his left hand and expected to be out 4-6 weeks, the team doesn't have the depth it wants in the outfield.

Our View:With Kielty injured, the Sox have reason to hold on to Crisp, who returned to the lineup yesterday for the first time since April 15 (tight right hamstring). Crisp hit two doubles, stole third twice, drove in two runs, and scored another.
April 24, 2008
Coco Crisp had a triumphant return to the lineup on Thursday going 2-for-4 with a run scored, two RBI and two SB for the Sox.

Our View:Jacoby Ellsbury continues to play well, but Crisp is really starting to make his mark, that is if he can stay on the field. Crisp is now hitting .341 with four SB in just 14 games, so his value in AL Only leagues continues to grow.
April 24, 2008
Coco Crisp will return to his spot in center field today against the Angels, according to The Boston Globe. He will bat eighth in the lineup.

Our View:He is back but still needs time to recover from his hamstring ailment, evidenced by his drop to eighth in the lineup. He could still generate solid numbers in the solid Boston offense, and is worth starting if you need him.
April 23, 2008
Boston manager Terry Francona reports Coco Crisp is scheduled to play in tomorrow's afternoon game against the Angels, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Crisp has been struggling to recover from a bad hamstring but has told Francona he is ready to go and believes he is fully recovered.
April 21, 2008
Coco Crisp isn't quite ready. The outfielder has been dealing with a sore hamstring, and he is not in the lineup for Monday's tilt against the Rangers, the Boston Globe reports. Crisp hasn't played since April 15.

Our View:He remains day-to-day, and we imagine he could be back as soon as Tuesday.
April 20, 2008
Coco Crisp could return to Boston's lineup on Monday, according to the Boston Herald. He has missed the last four games with a tight hamstring but Manager Terry Francona noted, "He’s feeling better but we’ll watch him run around and see how he’s doing. We may be pointing more toward Monday with him."

Our View:He was hitting 13-for-40 before getting hurt, and his return would send Jacoby Ellsbury back to the bench.
April 18, 2008
Coco Crisp and his injured hamstring will be on the bench for at least one more night, this according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:Jacoby Ellsbury will start in Crisp's place once again and will look to inject his youthful exuberance into the lineup.
April 17, 2008
Outfielder Coco Crisp has been hampered by a hamstring injury and is out of the lineup again tonight, according to the Providence Journal. Red Sox skipper Terry Francona told the paper that Crisp could play if needed, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. The manager said Crisp’s range-of-motion is fine.

Our View:Jacoby Ellsbury will start alongside Manny Ramirez and J.D. Drew.
April 16, 2008
Coco Crisp, who isn't starting on Wednesday night, is dealing with some soreness in his right leg, this according to MLB.com. "I'm OK. It's just sore," said Crisp. "I think it was the other day, trying to do all those dang bunts and then being in a coat and not being warm. That tightened me up and I'm sore, so we'll take it day by day."

Our View:Crisp may be out of action for a couple of days which would allow Jacoby Ellsbury to try and get some traction in the outfield as he has been outhit .325 to .280 through the first two weeks of the season.
April 16, 2008
Coco Crisp will ride the pine tonight in favor of Jacoby Ellsbury in center field, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Crisp is off to a favorable start as he is hitting 13-for-40, but Ellsbury has too much talent and potential to keep on the bench.
April 15, 2008
Coco Crisp has a good track record against Paul Byrd, tonight's opposing pitcher for Cleveland, according to MLB.com. He is 5-for-11 lifetime against Byrd.

Our View:Crisp is currently hitting 12-for-35, and Byrd is 0-2 with an 11.05 ERA. Crisp should have another solid outing against him.
April 14, 2008
Coco Crisp has a good record against Jake Westbrook, tonight's opposing pitcher for Cleveland, according to MLB.com. Over his career, Crisp is hitting 6-for-8 against Westbrook.

Our View:Crisp has racked up 10 hits over 31 at-bats, and looks to fare well in this match-up.
April 12, 2008
Coco Crisp will ride the pine in favor of Jacoby Ellsbury today against the Yankees, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View:Crisp has been more productive in center field so far, as he holds a .296 average over 27 at-bats, while Ellsbury is only hitting .176.
April 11, 2008
Coco Crisp is penciled in to start over Jacoby Ellsbury in center field against the Yankees tonight, according to the Providence Journal. He will bat leadoff, and will face Yankees' hurler Chien-Ming Wang.
April 10, 2008
Coco Crisp will start today in center field against Tigers' lefty Nate Robertson, according to MLB.com. Jacoby Ellsbury will ride the pine again, and this will be Crisp's sixth start in the first 10 games for Boston.
April 7, 2008
Coco Crisp will start over Jacoby Ellsbury on Tuesday against a left-handed pitcher, this according to the Boston Globe. The Sox will be facing crafty lefty Kenny Rogers meaning that leaning on the veteran in Crisp makes sense, but Ellsbury owners have to be getting very concerned that Crisp is taking so much of Ellsbury's playing time early on.
April 6, 2008
Coco Crisp is going to ride the pine in favor of Jacoby Ellsbury on Sunday, according to the Providence Journal. Crisp is only hitting 4-for-17 so far this season, with no RBI.
April 2, 2008
Coco Crisp is going to start in center field over Jacoby Ellsbury today, according to the Boston Globe. JD Drew will return to right field today and Manny Ramirez will play left field.
March 26, 2008
Coco Crisp got the call in center on Wednesday, replacing Jacoby Ellsbury, who started on Tuesday. Crisp went 1-for-3 with a single. The crowded Red Sox outfield could be a pain for fantasy baseball owners this season. Ellsbury's owners can only hope that Crisp is traded soon.
March 24, 2008
Coco Crisp, appeared to grow slightly irritated when asked to assess his health, this according to The Providence Journal. "This is the last time I'm going to talk about this," he said today. "I know I'm 100 percent." Because he played so little, Crisp didn't have a chance to compete for the center-field spot. Early in spring training, he had express a desire to be traded and this is the most best situation for all involved, but his salary might be an issue. "I'm taking it day-by-day,'' he said. "We'll see how it all plays out." It's believed that Billy Beane isn't interested in Crisp because of his salary, despite reports Oakland would like to upgrade in center field. Crisp stands to make $11 million over the next two years.
March 23, 2008
Coco Crisp is back in action and Manager Francona stated, "Pretty good. He's pain free. But his burst isn't what it could be -- or will be." This according to the Providence Journal. Crisp will back up Jacoby Ellsbury if he isn't traded.
March 21, 2008
Coco Crisp and his sore groin are probable for the Sox season opener next Tuesday, according to MLB.com. Manager Terry Francona said that if the outfielder doesn't play in Tokyo, he'll almost surely be ready for their first 2008 game in the states on April 1. Even if Crisp serves as just a pinch-runner or defensive replacement, the Sox will probably activate him for the games in Japan. Either way, Crisp will be backing up Jacoby Ellsbury. Boston is still trying to deal him.
March 18, 2008
Coco Crisp is expected to take part in both exhibition games in Japan, according to the Boston Herald. When asked his strained groin is close to 100 percent, Crisp said, "I don’t know, but I didn’t feel it at all today. I feel good enough to where I feel good enough to play nine innings. It’s just a matter of me getting out there and testing it out." Whether he'll end up taking part in either of Boston's regular-season games in Japan is unclear, but the fact that he's traveling with the team and playing the exhibition games is a good sign.
March 18, 2008
Coco Crisp, outfielder Bobby Kielty, and pitcher Curt Schilling will travel with the team to Japan this week, according to the Boston Globe. The report noted that it had been questionable that Crisp would take the flight to the Far East due to a groin injury, but it appears all of the injured will join in on the teams opening road trip.
March 17, 2008
Coco Crisp returned to action on Monday in a Triple-A game, marking his first action since March 2, according to MLB.com. He collected one hit over three at-bats. Terry Francona commented on Crisp's status, "We honestly don't know where we are yet. There's just no way to know." But the team did not rule him out for their trip to Japan. Crisp should continue to make progress and we should know very soon where he stands for opening day.
March 15, 2008
Coco Crisp took part in a full workout Friday, shagging fly balls in the outfield and taking batting practice, according to the Boston Globe. "The last couple of days I've felt better and I felt I could do a lot more today," he said. "I just have to be patient with the sprinting. I haven't gotten to the sprinting part of it yet. I don't want to do that yet and restart [the injury]. But I ran out there pretty fast. I could probably beat you guys [reporters] in a race right now. It's coming along. I'm happy with the progress." He still hopes to head to Japan with the Red Sox, but that's up in the air at this point -- as are any potential trades -- until he proves to be over his strained groin.
March 12, 2008
According to the Boston Globe, the recent rumor that had Coco Crisp going to the Mets for Angel Pagan, lasted but a few minutes. The deal is a no go. Theo Epstein, through media relations director John Blake, said that the Red Sox have not been talking to the Mets. The report calls the story a fabrication. The planets are beginning to realign after the initial ridiculous report. Just minutes ago, Pagan hit a two-run home run during a spring game against the Orioles.
March 12, 2008
According to WFAN's Ed Coleman, the Red Sox and Mets are working on a deal that would send Coco Crisp to New York for Angel Pagan. The report makes little long term sense, and an injured Crisp doesn't solve the current ailments in the Mets outfield.
March 12, 2008
Projo.com reports that center fielder Coco Crisp was at the facility on Tuesday working on rehabilitating his groin injury, but is still not game-ready. At this point it's safe to say that Crisp can't be counted on for the trip to Japan and his injury is making it tough for the team to audition him for what is a "hopeful" spring schedule trade.
March 11, 2008
Coco Crisp is still sidelined, according to the Providence Journal. There is no news regarding his groin injury or his expected return.
March 10, 2008
Coco Crisp is recovering from his injury, but still isn't near full-speed, according to Provo.com. His lateral movement is fine but Coach Francona stated, “The burst forward is still not in a position where we want him to try to do something in a game. He’s just not ready.” There is speculation that Crisp could be traded, but he will likely have to get healthier before a favorable deal can get done for Boston.
March 9, 2008
According to Sporting News Radio (Overnight for the Score) and the Cubs Reporter, a Coco Crisp for Jason Marquis and Sam Fuld deal is close. The radio reported that the Cubs and Red Sox are close to a deal that would send Fuld and Marquis to the Red Sox for Crisp. This news is purely speculation and rumor, but it is newsworthy. Stay tuned.
March 9, 2008
Coco Crisp hasn't played since last Sunday and won't be ready to go today, according to the Boston Globe. "That's just the way it worked out," Crisp said. "I have this injury, and I'm not going to go out there and play, tear a groin muscle or something doing that. Got to wait it out." On top of the groin issue, Crisp had a root canal and will have a follow-up procedure Thursday. Meanwhile, his competition in center field, Jacoby Ellsbury, jacked a two-run homer in Saturday's game.
March 8, 2008
Coco Crisp told the Boston Globe that it was "bogus" he had to compete for the center field role, and that he was not willing to be a bench player for the team. It's this kind of Neanderthal attitude that give athletes a bad name. You're only as good as your last performance or your last season, and neither of those efforts by Crisp were up to snuff. “Why would you want to sit on the bench? Why would you want to do that?” Crisp said. “I want to play. It’s just a matter of getting out there and having to reprove yourself (this spring). It’s kind of bogus.”
March 6, 2008
Coco Crisp continues to set himself apart from rookie Jacoby Ellbury as the two battle for playing time in center field, but Crisp is headed the wrong way in the positional battle. Crisp is suffering from a groin pull which has limited him since earlier in the week, and now the Boston Globe reports he underwent root canal on Thursday. Someone needs to tell Crisp he is fighting for at-bats, because he obviously isn't aware of it.
March 5, 2008
Coco Crisp missed a second straight game on Wednesday due to a sore groin, MLB.com notes. He is day-to-day.
March 4, 2008
Coco Crisp will sit out Tuesday's game because of a minor groin injury, according to the Boston Globe. As long as the Sox are saying it's minor, you shouldn't worry about it. If he's still out a few days from now, perhaps then we should become a little suspicious.
March 2, 2008
The Cubs had talks in recent weeks with the Red Sox about acquiring Coco Crisp, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. However, the talks reportedly were initiated by the Sox, who weren't impressed with the Cubs' tossing out Matt Murton in their offer. The White Sox rapped with the Sox about Crisp earlier in the offseason, but they also couldn't come to an agreement. Things should heat up as spring training goes along, but Chicago is just one of many possible destinations for Crisp.
February 21, 2008
Coco Crisp may or may not end up staying with the Red Sox this season, but GM Theo Epstein was supportive of his CF on Thursday according to MLB.com. "I think Coco was actually really calm and deliberate about what he said," Epstein said. "It's too early to get into roster discussions. We don't know what the makeup of the 25-man roster is going to be." It sounds like everyone is trying to play nice hear, but the bottom line is that neither Crisp or Jacoby Ellsbury would likely benefit from sharing time in CF. The team would love to keep Crisp around for his defense and baserunning even as a 4th OF, but it remains to be seen what will happen if the veteran is beat out by the rookie this season.
February 20, 2008
Coco Crisp arrived at Spring Training on Wednesday ready to battle young Jacoby Ellsbury for the center field job, reports Boston.com. Crisp told the media at his locker this morning he is not demanding or looking for a trade now, he did say that it might become a conversation later in spring training, depending on his starter status. When asked if he would want a trade if he wasn't the starting center fielder on Opening Day, "Honestly, I think so," Crisp said. "'Cause I want to play. Like I said, I wouldn't be happy sitting on the bench. A lot of people say, well, I don't deserve it. Well, that's understandable too. I didn't have a good offensive year like I did in the past. I think I proved myself that I can win healthy and shown that my defense is way better than what people thought." As of the first day of camp for positional players, Ellsbury is expected to open the season as the starter.
February 15, 2008
Most assumed that Coco Crisp would have been traded by now, and it's still likely he will be dealt. But he's still on the roster and manager Terry Francona said "I don't know" when asked whether Crisp or Jacoby Ellsbury would be the starting center fielder, according to the Boston Herald. "It's not Opening (Day) tomorrow," said Francona, perhaps hinting that even he envisions Crisp being traded. The manager was very complimentary when asked about Crisp, though. "I think it's somewhat important for our staff and the ballclub to not lose sight of what Coco gave us last year," he said. "He played center field about as good as you can, and he played banged up probably when he shouldn't have sometimes. It got to a point where we felt we needed to make a change in the playoffs. When that happened, Coco handled it with grace, which we appreciated." It's possible Ellsbury will start the year in Triple-A if Crisp isn't dealt before the opener, but expect Coco to be wearing a different uniform by then.
February 11, 2008
For what it’s worth, the Red Sox are taking the politically correct route when they broach the subject of Coco Crisp and his fit in the lineup. According to the Boston Herald, the BoSox are saying that Crisp is a candidate to start in center field and that competition is a healthy thing. At the same time, keeping top prospect Jacoby Ellsbury on the bench or sending him to the minor leagues will do absolutely no good at this stage because the kid needs to play, just as Dustin Pedroia needed to play last year. Though Crisp has underperformed in Boston, he is signed for the next two years at a total of $10.5 million in base salary with an $8 million option (or $500,000 buyout) for 2010. For a center fielder in this day and age, that’s short money. Given the Schilling situation, don’t be surprised if the Sox package Crisp with a prospect and try to get themselves a durable starter for the middle of their rotation.
