Player Notes
September 23, 2008
Rockies pitcher Aaron Cook will not make another start this season, as he has decided to end his year with complete health, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Our View:Cook had a solid year for fantasy owners, picking up 16 wins with a 3.96 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. His lack of strikeouts prevent him from being an elite hurler for fantasy purposes, as he struck out just 96 batters in 211.1 innings.
September 20, 2008
Aaron Cook allowed two earned runs on five hits over 6.1 innings in Saturday's 5-3 loss to Arizona, with three walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:Cook was dealt a no decision, and is winless over his last four starts. Cook doesn't register many strikeouts (has 96 over 32 starts), and should only be considered for NL-only leagues heading into the final week of the season.
September 14, 2008
Aaron Cook worked eight shutout innings on Sunday allowing just eight base runners against the Dodgers. Unfortunately he didn't pick up the win as the game was scoreless into extra innings.

Our View:After this outing, his 31st start, Cook owns a solid 4.00 ERA though he has still failed to reach the 100-K mark (he has 92). The 16 victories help to offset that terribly low strikeout total.
August 30, 2008
Aaron Cook gave up two earned runs on five hits over six innings in Friday's 9-4 win over the Padres, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:His strikeouts are low (87 over 188 innings) and his ERA (3.88) could be better as a fantasy starter, but he should remain a solid source for wins (16) heading down the stretch in September.
August 29, 2008
It has been a little bit of a struggle for Aaron Cook since the All-Star break and according to the Rocky Mountain News some scouts have said that Cook has lost the sink on his sinker. Since the break Cook has an ERA of 4.98.

Our View:Cook's ERA and WHIP are a little high for an elite starter but he does have 15 wins on the year and 84 strikeouts in 182-innings.
August 17, 2008
Colorado ace Aaron Cook got a little bit of his groove back today as recent struggles have put him in a bad way, pitching five innings to allow two runs (both earned) on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts as the Rockies pulled the 7-2 win over Washington.

Our View:Cook was riding consecutive losses coming in, giving up 11 earned runs over those starts. He has not gotten past the sixth inning in each of his last three starts and it appears fatigue may be settling in.
August 15, 2008
Aaron Cook will start Sunday's series finale with the Nationals, according to MLB.com. He was scratched from Thursday's outing because of fatigue and tightness in the small of his back.

Our View:Cook has been fighting it the last three times out. Hopefully the extra rest will allow his to get back on track.
August 14, 2008
Aaron Cook, who is recovering from a sore back, threw a side session Thursday and indicated that he hopes to start as soon as Sunday against Washington, according to the Denver Post.

Our View:Team officials expect to make a decision today. Given that he threw all his pitches pain free, the latest Cook would likely pitch is Tuesday in Los Angeles. Cook could be solid down the stretch as a fantasy hurler if he is fully healthy.
August 12, 2008
Aaron Cook had certainly not been pitching like the All-Star he was, and the cause of that may be a stiff back that will sideline him for his next start, according to the Denver Post. The team hopes this move will mean he will not have to go on the DL.

Our View:Cook has lost his last two games, and his effectiveness has been waning, which left many to believe he had some sort of malady. Cook's ERA has risen to 3.87, though he has been an asset in fantasy leagues and will continue to be so when fully healthy.
August 9, 2008
He started as the ace of the staff but is falling like a brick in the second half as the Rockies fall out of the NL West race. Likewise, starter Aaron Cook has fallen 8-3 to the Padres this evening, pitching just 5 2/3 innings to allow six runs (all earned) on 10 hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Our View:Cook falls to 14-8, suffering consecutive losses for the first time since June. Thus far this month, he has surrendered 11 total earned runs.
August 4, 2008
Aaron Cook lost his seventh game of the season by allowing the Washington Nationals to score seven runs, four of them earned, on 11 hits in 5.2 innings.

Our View:Cook is still a top option in all fantasy leagues, and his 14 wins remain second in the NL.
July 30, 2008
Aaron Cook won his 14th game on Friday night as held the Pirates to four runs over seven innings. Cook wasn't dazzling but he won his third straight start.

Our View:Cook has never won more than nine games before this season. His ERA (3.53) and WHIP (1.25) are spectacular for a pitcher who calls Coors Field home, even is he is deficient in strikeouts (4.15 K/9).
July 25, 2008
Aaron Cook won his 13th game of the season, holding the Reds to one run on five hits over eight innings.

Our View:Cook has been fantastic this season, especially considering he has done a lot of his work at Coors Field.
July 20, 2008
The offense was the name of the game for Colorado, getting the 11-3 win over the Pirates, but give ace Aaron Cook full credit, going seven innings to allow three runs over five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View:Cook is 12-6 on the season with an ERA of 3.58, though today represents just his second win over his last six starts.
July 11, 2008
Aaron Cook rebounded from his roughest outing of the season by giving up just one run in six innings on Friday in New York. He did not factor in the decision.

Our View:Nothing spectacular from Cook, except that he knows how to pitch himself out of jams.
July 6, 2008
Aaron Cook was roughed up the same day he was announced as an NL All-Star. In 7.1 innings against the Marlins he gave up seven earned runs, 11 hits and two walks.

Our View:Cook was certianly not an All-Star on Sunday. He had been 6-0 in day games up to this point. No one expected this type of season from Cook and its not out of the question to doubt his second half success.
July 6, 2008
The NL pitching staff for the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium has been announced, according to the Boston Globe. The hurlers representing the NL will be Tim Lincecum (Giants), Aaron Cook (Colorado), Dan Haren (Diamondbacks), Ben Sheets (Brewers), Carlos Zambrano (Cubs), Brandon Webb (Diamondbacks), Ryan Dempster (Cubs), Brian Wilson (Giants), Edinson Volquez (Reds), Kerry Wood (Cubs), Brad Lidge (Phillies), and Billy Wagner (Mets).

Our View:The team will be managed by Clint Hurdle of the Rockies.
July 1, 2008
The Padres couldn't get any sign of offense going tonight against the Rockies, giving Colorado the 4-0 victory built on the arm of rising RHP Aaron Cook . Cook pitched a complete game, allowing no runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:Cook picks up his first win after consecutive losses to end June. This is his second complete game this season and he has failed to reach at least the end of the seventh inning just six times through 18 starts this season.
June 25, 2008
Aaron Cook fell to 10-5 on Wednesday though he didn't pitch horribly in allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned) over 5.1 innings.

Our View:Cook has been a solid hurler this season with the wins, but his K total (54) is low. Though his ERA is a solid 3.64, his WHIP is barely better than average at 1.32, so don't be seduced solely by the win total.
June 20, 2008
Aaron Cook will be shooting for his 11th win of 2008 when the Rockies host the Mets tonight, according to MLB.com. Cook is 10-3 with a 3.29 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 15 starts.

Our View:Cook is the third hurler in Rockies' history to reach 10 wins before the All-Star break, and needs one more to tie Shawn Chacon for the club record, set back in 2003. Cook threw a complete game with only one run allowed in his last meeting against the Mets (at Coors) on May 25.
June 15, 2008
Aaron Cook gave up three earned runs on 10 hits over six innings in Sunday's 5-3 win over the White Sox in Chicago, with two walks and three strikeouts. Most of the damage came on a two-run homer by Jermaine Dye.

Our View:Cook is 10-3 for the season, with a 3.29 ERA. It wasn't a great outing, but was good enough to get the job done.
June 10, 2008
Working to become the reliable arm this team needs, Rockies RHP Aaron Cook picked up an impressive ninth win this evening as Colorado put the 10-5 victory on San Francisco. Cook went seven innings to allow four runs (three earned) on nine hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Our View:Cook now touts an ERA of 3.21 and a record of 9-3 on the season, posting three wins (with one no-decision) over his last four starts.
June 4, 2008
Aaron Cook worked eight strong innings and the Rockies defeated the Dodgers 2-1 on Wednesday. Cook allowed a run and six hits, struck out six and walked one.

Our View:It took a slow roller, a sacrifice and a misplayed ground ball for the Dodgers to score their only run. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 3.16. Cook is the only Rockies pitcher to throw a complete game this season and he came close today.
May 25, 2008
The Rockies enjoyed a 4-1 win against the Mets today, an effort built largely on the work of RHP Aaron Cook . Cook pitched the complete game, allowing just one run on a lowly four hits with one walk and three strikeout.

Our View:This brings Cook to 7-3 on the season, slowly but surely becoming the ace of the Colorado staff.
May 16, 2008
Aaron Cook was able to limit the damage to five runs in five innings despite allowing 10 hits and four walks to the D’backs in his second loss of the season.

Our View:Cook leaves this game with a 2.82 ERA but we have a bridge to sell you if you think that number won’t be close to four than three by seasons end. He now has 29 K and 21 BB on the year, another sign that his luck is bound to change, for the worse, moving forward.
May 10, 2008
Colorado's Aaron Cook won his sixth straight start, combining with two relievers on a four-hitter. The ground ball specialist allowed one run on three-hits, walked four and struck out one in seven innings of work.

Our View:Cook is pitching with confidence and his 14-4 GB:FB ration makes him a solid option even when pitching at Coors Field.
May 4, 2008
Aaron Cook improved to 5-1 thanks to a solid performance against the Dodgers on Sunday. He held the boys in blue to nine hits and two runs over 7.2 innings. Cook walked none and struck out two. He has allowed two or fewer runs in four straight starts.

Our View:Cook is a roll. He doesn't strike many batters out, but he is a solid ERA guy when his sinker is working. Cook has never won 10 games in a season, but it looks like that's going to change.
April 24, 2008
Aaron Cook was wonderful on Thursday as he held the Cubs to two runs over eight innings to pick up his third victory. Cook had five K on the day while he allowed four hits and three BB.

Our View:Through five stars Cook has and ERA of 2.91 with a WHIP of 1.03, though we are doubtful that he will be able to maintain that level for much longer given that he has a poor K/BB ratio (1.55) and that his track record is one that is full of injury. Still, he will continue to be a solid starter in NL Only leagues as long as he is healthy, albeit one with no strikeouts.
April 19, 2008
Aaron Cook pitched seven strong innings on Saturday night as he held the Astros to two runs, one earned, in his second victory.

Our View:Cook now owns a very un-Colorado like 3.12 ERA through four starts, but sooner or later the batters will catch up since he just doesn't possess dominating stuff.
April 13, 2008
Aaron Cook picked up his first win of the season on Sunday, a bit of redemption following his previous outing. Cook allowed eight hits and three runs over six innings against the Diamondbacks, and the offense had his back, putting up 13. In his prior start, Cook held the Braves to two hits and one run but left with a no-decision.

Our View:It's nice when things sometimes even out. Cook is far from being a fantasy stud, but he has good enough stuff to post a 4.20 ERA and potentially win 13-16 games.
April 7, 2008
Aaron Cook was magnificent on Monday night as he allowed just one run and three base runners in seven innings against the Braves. Cook now sports a 3.46 ERA over his first 13 innings and he should be able to maintain solid value in NL Only leagues this season if he can stay healthy.
March 17, 2008
Aaron Cook returned to the Cactus League mound for the first time since March 3 due to inflammation in his shoulder, and he pitched well as he allowed two runs on three hits over five innings of work against the Giants, with four strikeouts and one walk. Cook appears to be fine.
March 12, 2008
Aaron Cook threw three innings in an intrasquad game against minor leaguers Wednesday, allowing four hits while striking out three, according to the AP. The sinkerballer was scratched from his last start due to inflammation in his shoulder. It appears he's good to go now, though.
March 9, 2008
Aaron Cook was held out of Friday's game as a precaution due to inflammation in his shoulder. "I hope that I just miss that one turn and step right back into the rotation (either Tuesday or Wednesday)," Cook said, according to the Denver Post. "I haven't missed any throwing, so I don't feel like I am behind at all." It appears he has just a minor ailment that shouldn't affect his status for the start of the season, barring any setbacks.
March 7, 2008
Aaron Cook was scratched from his scheduled start on Friday, according to MLB.com. "He's got inflammation in his right shoulder," a team spokesman said Friday, calling Cook "day-to-day." They claim that holding him out was a precautionary move, in which case, he should be back on the mound soon. We'll have more updates as they come in.
February 21, 2008
Aaron Cook signed a 4-year, $34.5 million contract to pitch for the Rockies, and after being injured last last season he spent the off-season rededicating himself to conditioning according to MLB.com. "We're looking for not a fragmented season like we've seen in the past, but a full season, an opportunity to get to 200 innings or somewhere around that mark, and stay healthy," manager Clint Hurdle said. "He's looking for the same." Cook hurled 166 innings last season, a year after throwing 212.2 innings, and this will be the season he hopes to record his first double-digit victory total of his career. Man, $34.5 million just doesn't goes as far as it used to does it? Cook remains nothing more than a bottom tier NL Only option due in part to a sinker that just doesn't allow him to punchout batters, as his career-high in strikeouts is only 92.
