Player Notes
March 15, 2010
Chien-Ming Wang threw his first bullpen session of spring training Monday, according to MLBblogs.com. He threw 10 pitches on flat ground and then 15 pitches from a mound.

Our View:Wang was pain-free, which is encouraging while coming off shoulder surgery. His session went well overall, and he namely did a good job of pinpointing his sinker. He looks to have good odds of returning to game action in May.
March 9, 2010
Chien-Ming Wang (shoulder) is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session since arriving to the Nationals sometime next week, according to MLB.com's William Ladson.

Our View:Wang's shoulder seems to be healing nicely. It's still highly unlikely he's back anytime in April, though a May return is not out of the question.
March 8, 2010
Chien-Ming Wang (shoulder) played catch with fellow ailing hurler Jordan Zimmermann from 120 feet on Monday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:There's still no timetable as to when Wang will be ready for big league service, though the Nationals are hoping to have him available by some time in May. We'll continue to keep you up-to-date on his progress.
February 16, 2010
Updating a previous report, recently signed hurler Chien-Ming Wang has already passed his physical with the Nationals, according to the Washington Post.

Our View:Wang is coming off massive right shoulder surgery, so him passing the physical was much more than just dotting the "I"s and crossing the "T"s on his contract. It's a good sign for the Nats, who could use a veteran presence in their young rotation, but he's still not expected to be ready to take the mound in a game until May or June.
February 16, 2010
After days of speculation, Chien-Ming Wang has finally signed with the Washington Nationals, according to Bill Ladson of MLB.com.

Our View:The Nats have yet to officially acknowledge the agreement, and monetary detials are not yet available. He is believed to be getting somewhere around a $2 million base, with much more possible through incentives. Coming off of shoulder surgery, he is not expected to be ready to pitch until May or June.
February 15, 2010
Chien-Ming Wang is expected to make a decision where to sign by the end of this week, according to MLB.com's William Ladson.

Our View:At this point, the Nationals are looking like the heavy favorites to land his services, though nothing is official. Look for him to be packing his bags for the nation's capital once all is said and done.
February 13, 2010
The Cardinals are no longer in the running to sign Chien-Ming Wang, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:The Nationals remain the top candidate to add the former 19-game winner. The Cardinals already made a move to improve their rotation with the acquisition of Brad Penny.
February 10, 2010
According to Ken Davidoff on Twitter, the National are the hands down favorites to land free agent right-hander Chien-Ming Wang and are prepared to guarantee him $2 million plus more than double that in incentives.

Our View:Wang was ravaged by injures last season, which resulted in his overall ineffectiveness, but if healthy he can be a solid starter. He won't help much in fantasy leagues, as he's a flop in the strikeout department, but if he bounces back this year he could provide a nice veteran presence in the Nats rotation.
February 10, 2010
The suddenly destitute Dodgers have pulled out of the Chien-Ming Wang "race," according to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated. This would seem to mean he will end up with the Nationals.

Our View:If the Dodgers can't even afford somebody coming off a season in which they suffered a shoulder injury and posted a 9.64 ERA, they might be even poorer than we thought. Look for his signing with the Nats to become official in the next few days.
February 10, 2010
Along with the Nationals, the Dodgers are believed to be the other finalist for the services of Chien-Ming Wang, according to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated.

Our View:Wang is said to be very intrigued by the idea of reuniting with his former manager Joe Torre. If the Dodgers can find any extra money in their couch cushions, they should be able to land him over the Nationals.
February 10, 2010
Contrary to earlier reports, Bill Ladson of MLB.com says that "nothing is close between" the Nationals and pitcher Chien-Ming Wang.

Our View:Ladson's "baseball source insisted" that Wang is still over a week away from a decision. Considering Ladson is a Nationals beat writer, it's probably best to take his word over the Boston Globe's.
February 10, 2010
The Boston Globe's Pete Abraham is reporting that Chien-Ming Wang has decided to sign with the Washington Nationals.

Our View:A very smart move by the Nats, even though Wang likely won't be ready to pitch until May. It's clear the Nats are actually willing to do what it takes to avoid another season like 2009, and aren't just paying lip service to the notion of getting better. If Wang can pitch anything like he did in 2006-2008, this move will be huge.
February 9, 2010
According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, the Nationals are a finalist for Chien-Ming Wang.

Our View:This would gibe with Washington's other aggressive moves this offseason. If they are willing to give Wang more money than anyone else, they just might land him. Stay tuned.
February 9, 2010
Chien-Ming Wang is reportedly mulling over offers from two clubs, and could sign sometime in the next week, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Our View:All we really know is that those two teams are not the Mets or Dodgers, who, despite both being interested in Wang, are "lagging behind." Wang will most likely have to begin the season on the disabled list.
February 3, 2010
The Nationals have apparently emerged as a potential suitor for Chien-Ming Wang, according to MLB.com's William Ladson.

Our View:The Nationals join the Dodgers, Mets and Cardinals as teams known to be monitoring Wang, who's regarded as one of the top free agent pitchers still on the market. Expect him to land a deal before long.
February 1, 2010
The Dodgers watched Chien-Ming Wang throw off flat ground last week, and feel that he is at least three months away from being fully healthy, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Wang is trying to bounce back from a surgically-repaired right shoulder, and teams may hold back on offering him a deal before he gets closer to 100 percent, and proves to be an effective hurler again. The Mets, Cardinals and Dodgers are among the teams believed to have the former 19-game winner on their radar.
January 31, 2010
Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated reports that Chien-Ming Wang will end up on one of the "coasts" in 2010.

Our View:He said he didn't know "why that is," but if he reports it, it's usually true. Maybe the Mets will be able to land him after all. Stay tuned.
January 30, 2010
The Mets' latest free agent target is said to be former Yankees hurler Chien-Ming Wang, according to the New York Post.

Our View:In other words, the next to spurn the Amazins will be Chien-Ming Wang. Coming off of elbow surgery, Wang is not expected to be ready to pitch until May. The competition for his services is still believed to be fierce, however.
January 28, 2010
According to ESPN.com, Chien-Ming Wang is considering altering his plan to return from shoulder surgery a couple months into the season and may start in spring training.

Our View:Apparently four or five teams have ramped up their interest in Wang and he is considering signing a deal before spring training if the offer is enticing enough. The Cardinals, Mets and Dodgers have been mentioned as possible destinations. If he is truly healthy he could make a substantial impact at the back end of a contending rotation.
January 22, 2010
Chien-Ming Wang's agent says 15 teams have expressed interest in the free agent hurler, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:While that could be an exaggeration, it's probably not actually that far off. Wang, while not overpowering, was a very effective pitcher before hurting his foot midseason 2008, and after an injury-ravaged 2009 ballooned his ERA to historic proportions, it's not a bad gamble to assume he could throw some very quality innings this season as long as he is healthy. Stay tuned.
January 19, 2010
The Cardinals are believed to have some interest in free agent starter Chien-Ming Wang, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:At least to the point where they have requested his medical records. The interest in him is thought to be very high across the league, however, so the Cardinals are not unique in their position, and shouldn't be considered a favorite at this point.
