The Denver Post is reporting that the Rockies will not release third baseman Garrett Atkins before the December 12 non-tender date. The team would like more time to try to trade Atkins to get something in return.

Our View:Atkins is obviously not in the Rockies' plans for next season, but they want to get something in return for him when he goes. There are several teams interested, but they all might wait until his release before going after him.

The Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles are interested in Rockies third baseman Garrett Atkins.

Our View:The O's likely won't make a move until they find out if Atkins is non-tendered in December, but their interest is legit. Despite having a terrible season (.226/.308/.342) the third baseman is expected to be awarded around $7 million in arbitration and the Rockies likely won't pay it. If Baltimore can wait it out, they won't have to give up any prospects in return for him. Wherever he lands, Atkins will be a dicey fantasy choice in 2010.
October 2, 2009
Garrett Atkins acknowledged that he will likely not be back with the Rockies next season, according to the Denver Post. "Obviously, I don't think I've got too many more games in a Rockies uniform," Atkins said. "I'm just trying to enjoy it with these guys. I'm glad to be a part of it today and help the team clinch. Hopefully we'll have a long stretch in October."

Our View:Atkins has been a regular for the Rockies up until this season, and he will welcome a new start elsewhere in 2010. If he can put together a nice performance or two in the postseason, he should get plenty of interest this winter.
September 10, 2009
Garrett Atkins hit his ninth homer of the season and first since August 14th in a 5-1 win over the Reds on Thursday. The two-run shot came in the third inning off Kip Wells and was his only hit in four trips.

Our View:Atkins has been playing more due to Ian Stweart's injury, but hasn't really made the most of it. He's just 2-for-10 in his last three starts.
August 16, 2009
The Denver Post is reporting that Rockies' third baseman Garrett Atkins will play more down the stretch. Manager Jim Tracy likes Atkins' bat in the lineup, and he like Atkins' experience over that of Ian Stweart.

Our View:Tracy seems convinced that Atkins can do good things when in the lineup, and he has come through a bit as of late. Atkins should be owned in NL-only leagues for the rest of the way, but he is still not a good mixed league candidate.
