Player Notes
July 24, 2008
Johnny Estrada has been designated for assignment by the Nationals, according to the AP. The team activated Lastings Milledge from the DL, and Estrada was viewed as expendable to make room on the roster.

Our View:Estrada lost his spot on the Nationals' roster due to a dismal .180 average over 50 at-bats.
July 18, 2008
Johnny Estrada has been activated from the DL following his bout with a left elbow injury, according to the AP. Wily Mo Pena has been placed on the 15-day DL as the adjoining move.

Our View:Estrada only batted .179 with no homers over 17 games with the Nationals this season, and shouldn't hold any fantasy value while working behind Jesus Flores.
June 7, 2008
Johnny Estrada will travel to Florida to continue working on his recovery from an injured elbow, according to MLB.com. Estrada hopes to return to action by the end of the month.

Our View:When Estrada is healthy, it's not a certainty that he will be able to unseat Jesus Flores or Paul Lo Duca (also to be activated soon).
May 9, 2008
Johnny Estrada has been placed on the 15-day DL, according to the AP. He is dealing with ulnar neuritis in his right elbow. The team activated outfielder Elijah Dukes from the DL to fill his spot on the roster.

Our View:Estrada was only hitting .179 with no homers and three RBI over 39 at-bats this season, and held no fantasy value prior to landing on the DL.
May 8, 2008
Johnny Estrada will be placed on the DL on Friday with ulnar neuritis in his throwing elbow, according to the Washington Post. "I'm done trying to just battle through," Estrada said. "I've got to look out for what's best for me and my career."

Our View:Jesus Flores will be recalled from Triple-A to take Estrada's roster spot and he will back up Wil Nieves.
April 24, 2008
Johnny Estrada is once again dealing with soreness in his elbow, and with Paul Lo Duca on the DL, the Nationals are being forced to go with Will Nieves on Thursday, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Estrada should be in the lineup on Friday, but he is hitting just .208 in 24 AB and has done nothing to take advantage of the injury to Lo Duca.
April 8, 2008
Johnny Estrada will be recalled from his rehab assignment to replace the injured Dmitri Young on the roster. Estrada is coming back from elbow surgery. He'll be behind Paul Lo Duca on the depth chart but should get a couple starts per week.
April 3, 2008
Johnny Estrada began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Columbus Thursday, according to the AP. The catcher is coming back from elbow surgery and is expected back in a couple weeks.
March 27, 2008
Johnny Estrada was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, retroactive to March 21, according to the team website. The catcher had right elbow surgery this winter and is still not ready to serve as the full time backup to Paul Lo Duca. He’s expected to be activated in two weeks. Jesus Flores will stay with the club until Estrada returns, at which point he’ll head to the minors.
March 15, 2008
Nats manager Manny Acta admitted that Johnny Estrada will be a longshot to be ready for the start of the season, according to the Washington Post. Estrada still is working his way back from offseason elbow and knee surgeries, but soreness in his elbow is what's holding him back right now.
March 7, 2008
Johnny Estrada received a cortisone shot in his right elbow on Thursday, according to the Washington Post. "I can't do anything, just run," Estrada said. "It stinks." He's working his way back from surgery on the elbow and his knee, which appears to be fine. Whether Estrada will be available when the season begins is entirely uncertain right now.
March 1, 2008
Johnny Estrada's surgically repaired knee is fine, but his surgically repaired right elbow still is tender and inflamed, so he'll be shut down for the time being, according to the Washington Post. "I'm not too worried - yet," Estrada said. He won't work out for a few days, at which point we should have a better read on his status going forward.
January 29, 2008
The Nationals have signed Johnny Estrada to a one-year, $1.25 million deal. Estrada must pass a physical before the deal is finalized. According to a baseball source, the move was not made in reaction to Paul Lo Duca's knee surgery, but rather the Nats felt they were heavy on right-handed bats, according to MLB.com. It's not clear how the Nats plan on divvying up the playing time between Estrada and Lo Duca. One thing that is clear is Jesus Flores will now begin the year in the minors - assuming Lo Duca is ready at the start of the season.
