According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Cardinals and National League two-time defending MVP Albert Pujols are currently in contract negotiations.

Our View:All offseason there has been panic seeping through Cardinal Nation and fans licking their chops in every other baseball city at the prospect of landing the great Pujols. Some pundits believe the Cardinal organization can't afford him after the deal the club gave Matt Holliday, but part of the Holliday signing was to ensure Pujols that the team was serious about competing. In any case, the two sides are in discussions, but won't publicly acknowledge the talks. Expect the Cards to make this a priority and count on a deal getting done some time in the future. They won't let the game's best player walk, and even though Scott Boras will want a deal comparable to the one A-Rod got (10 years, $275 mil), Pujols will likely stay put for a discount. Stay tuned, but don't expect breaking news right away.

The Cardinals and slugger Albert Pujols do not have a timetable in place to begin discussing a contract extension, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:Pujols, as you may have heard by now, will be a free agent after the 2011 season. Rumors have begun to swirl that the Cards may not have the money to keep their franchise player after signing Matt Holliday to a $120 million contract earlier this week, but it's hard to believe the Birds would sign Holliday at the expense of Pujols. Stay tuned.

In a rather bizarre statement, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa has told the San Jose Mercury News that new Cardinals hitting coach, and controversial former slugger, Mark McGwire could be added to the team's active roster next August, therefore making him eligible to be a pinch-hitter in the postseason.

Our View:Uhh, what? La Russa has never been much into humor, so this strikingly odd statement should be taken at face value. He at least admits having the now 46-year-old slugger serve as a pinch hitter would be a "nice little dream," but not likely. Truly weird.

Albert Pujols' signing of a contract extension with the Cardinals is not contingent on the team locking up Matt Holliday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View:The team and Pujols have been slow to begin negotiations on a new deal, and whether or not Albert's representation thinks it has anything to do with Holliday, it most likely does. Once that situation is resolved, expect the sides to get serious about trying to hammer out an extension.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that neither Albert Pujols nor the Cardinals are itching to get a contract extension done right now.

Our View:Pujols is apparently more interested in the team spending money in free agency than lavishing a new deal on him. It fits with what he has said and done in the past, and bodes well for both his and the team's long-term viability.
