Denny Bautista, who is recovering from a forearm contusion, was able to play catch on Saturday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View:Manager John Russell noted that he could return to action on Monday if his ailment continues to progress favorably, and his ability to throw Saturday was a good sign.

The Pirates have recalled pitchers John Van Benchoten and T.J. Beam from Triple-A Indianapolis, also placing reliever Denny Bautista on the 15-day disabled list, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:Bautista was struck on the right forearm by a line drive last night. X-rays did not detect a fracture last night, but he was to have been tested further today. It was not immediately clear why Van Benschoten was getting the call, although the Pirates are in need of a starter for the game next Wednesday in Cincinnati. Ty Taubenheim already had been summoned to make the start tonight in place of Dumatrait, and it is possible he could be sent right back after the game. Beam had just been sent back to Indianapolis Thursday and, in an ordinary circumstance, could not be recalled for 10 days. But placing another pitcher on the disabled list qualifies as an exception.

Denny Bautista was struck on the right elbow by the Rays' Akinori Iwamura in the fourth inning of action tonight, according to the AP.

Our View:Bautista immediately dropped his arm in agony as Iwamura beat out an infield single. We will keep you posted on the severity of his injury.

Denny Bautista has joined the Pirates' 25-man roster, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The team opened up a spot for him by placing Ian Snell on the 15-day DL.

Our View:Bautista will be in uniform tonight against the Yankees. He surrendered seven earned runs, 15 hits, and 14 walks over 19 innings with the Tigers this season, and won't hold any fantasy value in traditional mixed leagues while fighting for playing time out of the Pirates' pen.

Denny Bautista was traded from the Tigers to Pittsburgh today for minor league pitcher Kyle Pearson after being designated for assignment on Friday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View:Bautista was 0-1 with a 3.32 ERA for the Tigers, but he walked 14 batters while striking out just 10 in 19 innings this season. On a positive note, he did hold left-handed batters to a .143 BA.
