MLB.com's Todd Zolecki reports via Twitter that the Phillies have released right-hander Rodrigo Lopez.

Our View:Lopez was made expendable by the additions of Pedro Martinez and Cliff Lee, but give some credit to his 5.70 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in 30 innings this season. The Phils had no use for six starters, especially one as ineffective as Lopez has been lately.

Despite the Phillies currently having six starting pitchers on their major league roster, they are expected to recall starter Rodrigo Lopez once rosters can be expanded in September, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View:Long reliever anybody? In seven games (five starts) for the Phils this season, Lopez accrued a 3-1 record and 5.70 ERA.
August 10, 2009
Rodrigo Lopez has been optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, according to the team's Twitter page. The move was made to clear room for the activation of reliever Chad Durbin.

Our View:There was just no more room left in the Phillies pitching staff for Lopez after the acquisition of Cliff Lee and with Pedro coming up on Wednesday. Lopez was decent in his time as a starter, but the team is much better off where they are as a rotation now.
July 31, 2009
Rodrigo Lopez was hit with his first loss of the season on Thursday as the Phillies fell to the Giants by a score of 7-2. Lopez went four innings and allowed seven runs (three earned) on eight hits while walking two and striking out two.

Our View:Lopez is likely heading out of the rotation after the acquisition of Cliff Lee, and he didn't do anything tonight to make a case for himself. He will lose most, if not all, of his fantasy value if and when he is removed from the rotation, so fantasy owners should be prepared to find another option.
July 20, 2009
Rodrigo Lopez was in control from the hill in Monday's 10-1 win over the Cubs at Citizens Bank Park, as he only surrendered one earned run on five hits over six innings. He had three walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:Lopez continues to pitch well, as he allowed two or less earned runs in each of his four starts. He is worth penciling into fantasy lineups for as long as he has a spot in the Phillies' rotation.
