MLB.com reports that Travis Hafner is nearly healthy enough to begin swinging a bat. Hafner underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in October.

Our View:Hafner, who is expected to be slightly behind the rest of the team come spring training, reportedly will return to a hitting program by the middle of January.

Travis Hafner's rehab from shoulder surgery is going well, and he should be ready for spring training, reports the Akron Beacon Journal.

Our View:Hafner has struggled over the last two seasons, and is somewhat risky for fantasy owners. The Indians could easily install Victor Martinez at DH and play Kelly Shoppach at catcher should Hafner struggle.

Slugger Travis Hafner underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, according to the AP. The procedure cleaned out Hafner’s right shoulder joint. No structural or nerve damage was found. Hafner will begin physical therapy Thursday and should be ready for the start of the 2009 season.

Our View:Hafner first started having problems with the shoulder in spring training and eventually went on the disabled list May 30. HE did not return to the Indians until September 9 and continued to have discomfort down the stretch. The DH, who batted .197 with five home runs and 24 RBI in 57 games last season, is due to make $49 million over the next four years, with a $13 million option or a $2.75 million buyout for 2013.

Indians DH Travis Hafner will have surgery on his aching right shoulder on Tuesday, according to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. Dr. James Andrews will perform the operation.

Our View:Hafner had shoulder problems all year. He was horrendous for the whole season, as least in part because of that, hitting .197 in 198 at-bats. It is unknown how long the surgery will keep the slugger out.

Travis Hafner will visit Dr. James Andrews in Alabama today prior to deciding on shoulder surgery, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View:Hafner has already been examined by at least two doctors since the end of the season to try and determine why the strength in his right shoulder has not returned to normal. He spent over three months rehabbing it on the DL during the season. Tests, including an MRI, on Hafner's shoulder have reportedly shown no serious damage to the labrum or rotator cuff. There has been speculation that Hafner could be experiencing a nerve problem in the shoulder.
