The Twins were initially asking for Phi Hughes, Melky Cabrera and Ian Kennedy from the Yankees in a potential Johan Santana deal, but they've apparently backed off those demands and are now willing to take pitching prospect Jeffrey Marquez instead of Kennedy, according to the NY Times. Still, the timetable for when a deal will be made is unclear. And the Red Sox are still thought to be heavily involved, as they are expected to have a deal of Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, Justin Masterson and Jed Lowrie on the table.

Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner still thinks there's a chance the Yanks will acquire Johan Santana this winter, according to Newsday. "There's still an outside chance that we get him," Steinbrenner said yesterday afternoon. "We'll see. We've got to do things based on what we think is best. I think myself and [general manager] Brian [Cashman] are going back and forth. I think we're comfortable staying where we are, and I certainly think we'd be comfortable getting Santana, too." Should a deal happen, Phil Hughes and Melky Cabrera would likely be the key pieces.

The Twins are still looking to trade Johan Santana but there is no deal imminent, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The Twins are reportedly holding out for Jacoby Ellsbury and Jon Lester to be part of a three- or four-player package from Boston. Aside from the Red Sox, the Mets, Mariners and Angels could all still potentially jump into the mix.

No Johan Santana deal has been completed yet, but the Red Sox and Twins talked through the night and into the morning. The latest offer on the table is thought to be Jon Lester, Coco Crisp and some combination of Ryan Kalish, Justin Masterson and Jed Lowrie, according to the Boston Herald. At this point, the Red Sox are the clear front runners to acquire Santana, although the Yankees could conceivably get back into the mix, and the Angels may want to make a late run at Santana now that they've missed out of Miguel Cabrera.

The AP reports the Yankees will pull out of the Johan Santana trade talks with the Twins if they don't make a decision by late Monday (no specific time was set). "I'm not going to be played against the Red Sox. That's not something I'll do. That's not something the Yankees should ever do, and that's I think what they're trying to do now," Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said Sunday. "So if they want the best offer that has been offered to them, then they need to make up their minds." The Yankees have reportedly offered Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera and another mid-level prospect for the left-hander. Should the Yanks not pull off a deal for Santana, they will likely turn their attention towards acquiring Dan Haren from the A's.

The Yankees are stepping up their attempts to acquire Johan Santana from the Twins. They upped the ante Friday when they decided to offer Phil Hughes as part of a trade proposal, according to Newsday. The Red Sox, Mets, Dodgers, Angels and Mariners all have expressed at least some interest in Santana, so the Twins likely will hear other offers before making a final decision.

The Yankees aren't the only club involved in serious discussions with the Twins about Johan Santana, as the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox plan to aggressively pursue the left-hander, as well. The Twins are reportedly asking for Clay Buchholz, Jacoby Ellsbury and another prospect in return for Santana, but that may be too rich for the Sox's blood. Should the Twins be willing to accept Coco Crisp instead of Ellsbury, there's a much better chance of a deal getting done. And despite already having a plethora of pitching, the LA Times reports that the Angels have thrown their hat into the ring, as well.

The Yankees and Twins are discussing a potential deal involving Johan Santana, though the talks are in the very early stages. "To tell you the truth, I don't want to get into all of that, as far as what they want and what we would give," Hank Steinbrenner told the NY Post. "It's all very preliminary. We are trying to find out what will happen." The Yanks have said previously that Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy are untouchable, but if they want to land a guy like Santana, they'll have to give up at least one of those young pitchers.

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Twins recently offered Johan Santana a five-year, $93 million contract extension. Johan Santana, Thursday's scheduled starter, will throw on Friday against the Indians instead if that game is played as scheduled, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Johan Santana was not happy with the Twins decision to trade away veteran second baseman Luis Castillo and their decision not to add a big bat at the trade deadline. "I've been here for eight years, and I've seen a lot of those kind of things," Santana told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "If you're always talking about having young players – that's the philosophy the team has, and I respect all that – but it's been proven that it's not enough to go all the way to the World Series… They protect their young players. They protect their organization, their roots, everything. But I guess I won't be a part of it. A lot of guys don't feel like they can be part of it, and they have to move on." Santana can be a free agent after the 2008 season.

Johan Santana expressed frustration after being pulled out of his last start in the seventh inning after throwing 108 pitches, but manager Ron Gardenhire has no plans to let him throw more pitches. “I’m not going to let Johan go out and throw 150 pitches, even if he wants to,” Gardenhire told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “I want Johan pitching when we open the new stadium [in 2010]. Santana is just 6-6 despite a solid ERA of 3.19 this season.

Johan Santana suffered the loss at the Metrodome on Friday night against the Devil Rays, marking the first time in his last 24 home starts that the left-hander lost, according to the AP. He was 17-0 during the stretch. "If it's over, it's over," Santana said. "Then we'll start another one. It's that simple." Santana allowed four runs in seven innings while striking out 10 during outing.
April 8, 2007
The Twins coaching staff plans to check if Johan Santana needs an extra day whenever the team has a day off, or, as was the case on Friday, there is a postponement, according to the Star Tribune. Santana finished last season with a sore hip and back, and the team was careful to make sure they weren't letting him overdue it. "I think it's a good thing here," Santana said, "We communicate well and make sure we are on the same page."
April 3, 2007
At his request, the Twins will give Johan Santana a fifth day of rest before his second start, which will be on Sunday against the White Sox in Chicago, according to the AP. Carlos Silva will pitch Friday and Sidney Ponson will throw Saturday. Manager Ron Gardenhire said it was too early to decide whether Santana will return to a four-day rest schedule next week.
