Player Notes
September 1, 2008
Johan Santana dominated the Brewers holding them to just two runs over six innings as he recorded yet another no-decision. Santana recorded 10 K while walking just one.

Our View:Santana is 4-0 over his last 10 starts despite posting a 2.47 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP as he continues to be one of the better second half pitchers in the game. For that matter, he continues to function as one of the best pitchers in the game regardless of the time of year.
August 27, 2008
Most of the teams Johan Santana has faced do not claim much success off the lefty, and players on the Phillies roster fit that bill. Against the Cy Young winner, Phillies players are hitting a combined .210 in 105 at-bats, with two home runs, two walks and 28 strikeouts.

Our View:The Mets need Santana to continue dominating Phillies hitters after imploding on Tuesday, losing in extra innings after holding a 7-0 lead.
August 22, 2008
Johan Santana was very good for New York, going seven innings and allowing nary a run while striking out five in the Mets 3-0 win over Houston.

Our View:Santana is rolling. This is the second consecutive game he has not given up a run, covering 16 innings.
August 22, 2008
The Mets' ace, Johan Santana, may be earning his money down the stretch with his performances, but the decline in his K rate has been a huge disappointment in the fantasy realm. Santana has averaged more than a strike out per inning over the last six seasons. The drop to 7.53 this season in combination with his move to the National League is concerning.

Our View:That said, he's struck out 20 over his last three starts and his 2.75 ERA is stellar.
August 17, 2008
Mets ace Johan Santana earned every penny of his paycheck today, pitching the complete-game win over Pittsburgh, 4-0. Santana allowed just three hits, walking none and striking out seven.

Our View:Santana moves to 11-7 with a 2.75 ERA. He is pitching at the level to Mets expected when they gave him a vault full of cash, but rare is the offensive support that is needed to let the arm shine. Since a poor 1-4 effort in June, he has gone 4-0 over nine starts, surrendering a combined total of just 16 earned runs during that span.
August 12, 2008
Mets hurler Johan Santana won his tenth game of the year as he went seven innings and gave up three earned runs against Washington.

Our View:Santana has not lost since the month of June, and he has really pitched well as of late. He deserves more wins than he currently has, but fantasy owners will certainly take his ERA, WHIP and strikeout total.
August 7, 2008
Johan Santana allowed two earned runs on four hits over seven innings in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Padres at Shea Stadium, with three walks and seven strikeouts. He exited the game with a 3-1 lead, but the Padres scored a run in the eighth and ninth innings to tie the game, leaving Santana with a no decision instead of his 10th win with the Mets. David Wright hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to win the game for New York.

Our View:Santana is stuck on nine wins with the Mets, and has been handed a no decision in five of his last seven starts. He has now allowed two or less earned runs in four straight outings, but only has one win over the span.
August 2, 2008
Johan Santana only surrendered one earned run on three hits over 6.1 innings in Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Astros, with two walks and three strikeouts. He pitched great but was dealt a no decision as he left the game with a 4-1 lead, before Houston rallied back to win it in the 10th inning.

Our View:Santana allowed two or less earned runs in three straight starts, yet he only has one win over the span. His record remains at 9-7, and he trimmed his ERA to 2.86.
July 27, 2008
Johan Santana only surrendered one run on six hits over nine innings in Sunday's 9-1 win over the Cardinals at Shea Stadium, with one walk and five strikeouts. The only run allowed came on an Albert Pujols homer.

Our View:Believe it or not, that was only Santana's first complete game of the season. He improves to 9-7, and hasn't been dealt a loss in five straight outings.
July 22, 2008
Johan Santana pitched well on Tuesday against the Phillies but his bullpen allowed six runs in the ninth to erase his win. Over eight innings, he scattered eight hits and no walks for just two runs.

Our View:Santana has pitched far better than his 8-7 record would indicate. This was supposed to be a problem when he was with the Twins, but the Mets have little excuse. He has just one win in his last nine outings.
July 17, 2008
Johan Santana continued his struggles against the Reds on Thursday. He lasted just four innings and gave up five earned runs, including two homers. On the night he surrendered six hits and three walks.

Our View:No idea why Johan can't get past the Reds. Don't expect these struggles to carry over into his next start.
July 17, 2008
Johan Santana makes the start for the Mets tonight in Cincinnati. In two career starts against the Reds, Santana is 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA.

Our View:After the All-Star break last season, Johan was just 5-7 with a 4.04 ERA.
July 9, 2008
Mets LHP Johan Santana enjoyed a strong evening on the mound, earning his eighth win of the season by pitching five innings to surrender no runs on just three hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:Santana is hoping to bounce back from a worrisome June, going 1-4 despite posting a 2.27 ERA. Thus far it's going well, allowing just two total earned runs over two starts with three walks and 11 strikeouts.
July 4, 2008
Johan Santana pitched well despite ending his night with a no decision, as he only allowed two earned runs on six hits over eight innings in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Phillies, with no walks and six strikeouts. The battle was tied 2-2 when he exited.

Our View:He had another strong performance, but his bad luck continues, as he is now winless in six-straight starts. He has allowed two or less earned runs in four of those outings, and should remain active in your lineups.
June 28, 2008
Johan Santana struck out eight over six innings but allowed three runs on four hits, enough for the Yankees to defeat the Mets 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. Santana walked four losing a career-worst four straight decisions.

Our View:Santana has pitched well to win the four games he's lost. In the left-handers last five starts he's recorded a 2.53 ERA.
June 23, 2008
Johan Santana allowed five runs (though just one was earned because of a David Wright error) on seven hits and two walks while striking out four over seven innings Monday in a loss to the Mariners.

Our View:Santana's line for fantasy owners ended up being very good, but his won-loss record this year (7-6) has been quite disappointing.
June 17, 2008
The Mets, like many of their NL brothers, found interleague play to be none too rewarding this evening, falling 6-1 to the Angels. LHP Johan Santana picked up the loss, going six innings to surrender five runs (four earned) on eight hits, surrendering two walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:Santana now carries a record of 7-5 with an ERA of 3.04, suffering his second loss in three starts (with a no-decision in between).
June 12, 2008
Johan Santana was at his dominating best on Thursday striking out 10 D'backs while holding them scoreless over seven shutout innings. Unfortunately, Billy Wagner blew the save in the ninth before Aaron Heilman blew the game in the 10th.

Our View:This was the first time in 10 starts that Johan had struck out nine or more batters, so it was nice to see him return to the level of dominance he has shown in past seasons. There's nothing you can do when the bullpen blows a game, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating.
June 11, 2008
Johan Santana takes the mound against the Diamondbacks tomorrow night. In three career starts against Arizona, Santana is 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA and 0.77 WHIP.

Our View:Santana's shoulder has been "a little stiff" after being hit by a line drive in his last start but history tells us he should fare well against his next opponent.
June 8, 2008
Johan Santana didn't do his standard day-after tossing and said his shoulder felt "a little stiff" after being hit by a pitch in his last start, but he expected the rest of his between-starts schedule to remain normal, according to the NY Daily News. He doesn't expect to miss his next start.

Our View:It sounds like it's OK to keep Johan in your lineups this week.
June 7, 2008
Johan Santana was spotted wearing an anti-inflammatory bandage after getting hit in the left shoulder by a Randy Wolf fastball during Friday's game, according to MLB.com.

Our View:He is experiencing soreness in the shoulder, but it remains to be seen if he will be forced to miss his next start.
June 1, 2008
Johan Santana pitched into the eighth inning earning his 100th career win, and the New York Mets beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1 on Sunday night. Santana allowed a run in the first inning, was struck for six hits, walked three and struck out six.

Our View:The two-time Cy Young Award winner hasn't lost at Shea Stadium since April 12 and lowered his ERA to 3.20 with his Sunday effort.
May 27, 2008
Johan Santana will be in action tonight when the Mets host the Marlins, according to MLB.com. Santana is 5-3 with a 3.36 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 10 starts with New York.

Our View:Santana only allowed two runs on three hits over seven innings against the Marlins on March 31, which was his Mets' debut. He registered eight strikeouts in that game as well, and should have another solid outing tonight in front of the home crowd.
May 24, 2008
Buster Olney wrote in his blog that there are whispers that Johan Santana isn't the pitcher that he once was due to declining velocity, according to ESPN. Said one unnamed AL scout Santana's "...stuff isn't even close to what it was [with the Twins]."

Our View:While it is true that Santana is the classic second half pitcher, he is currently working on 6-year worsts in K/9 (7.79), K/BB (3.87) and OPSA (.723), though to be fair all of those numbers are still very strong. In addition, over his last 17 starts, he has a 4.05 ERA and he has allowed the most home runs in baseball since the start of last season (44). Johan is still one of the best hurlers in the game, but it remains to be seen if he will return first round value this season.
May 22, 2008
Johan Santana allowed a career worst 12 hits to the Braves on Thursday which lead to four runs, three earned, in his third loss of the season.

Our View:Santana didn't walk a single batter, but he only had one strikeout in about as unlike Santana outing as you will ever see. But given the man credit; he was at his worst yet he still allowed only three earned runs.
May 22, 2008
Johan Santana will make his 10th start with the Mets tonight against Atlanta, according to MLB.com. Santana has already allowed 11 home runs this season, but holds a solid 5-2 record with a 3.30 ERA and 1.12 WHIP over 60 innings, with 57 strikeouts.

Our View:Santana allowed four earned runs in his last start (against the Yankees), but only surrendered eight total earned runs over his previous four starts.
May 17, 2008
Johan Santana collected his fifth win with the Mets in Saturday's 7-4 victory over the Yankees. Santana allowed four runs on seven hits over 7.2 innings, with two walks and five strikeouts.

Our View:He surrendered three home runs in the game, but the Mets scored enough runs for him to win. He is now 3-0 over five games at Yankee Stadium.
May 17, 2008
Johan Santana takes the hill today against the Yankees, according to MLB.com. He was set to start last night, but the game was postponed due to rain. Santana commented, "I was ready to go. I was ready to pitch. My mind was set for Friday. You can't control Mother Nature. These kinds of things are going to happen once in a while." Santana is 4-2 this season, with a 3.10 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 52.1 innings, with 52 strikeouts. The game will take place in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium.

Our View:Santana has a 2-0 record and a 1.17 ERA in four games at Yankee Stadium. Overall against the Yankees, he has a 3-0 record and a 2.66 ERA over eight games. Fantasy owners should be pleased he was not skipped in the rotation due to the postponed game last night.
May 16, 2008
Johan Santana has been pushed back to Saturday as Friday's scheduled start against the Yankees has been postponed due to rain, according to the AP. Oliver Perez will follow him on Sunday.

Our View:The Mets already have a day-night doubleheader Tuesday at Atlanta and didn’t want to schedule another doubleheader for this week. The game will likely be made up some time in June.
May 14, 2008
Johan Santana will start on Friday against the Yankees, the New York Daily News confirms. Oliver Perez and John Maine will follow.

Our View:The Mets pushed Santana back one day in order to have him face the Yankees. That means Mike Pelfrey will start on Thursday against the Nationals.
May 12, 2008
Mets skipper Willie Randolph was noncommittal after the Monday night loss to Washington about whether he would alter his rotation so ace Johan Santana could start Friday at Yankee Stadium in the opener of the weekend Subway Series.

Our View:The way the rotation is set up now, Santana is set to start Thursday against the Nationals and Mike Pelfrey against the Mets on Friday.
May 10, 2008
Johan Santana earned his fourth win of the season on Saturday as the Mets pounded the Reds 12-4. The Mets' new ace allowed three runs on 10 hits over six innings, with one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View:Santana is now 4-2 with a 3.10 ERA over eight starts.
May 9, 2008
The scheduled game between the Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets was postponed because of rain Friday night. It will be made up Saturday as part of a day-night doubleheader, with start times of 1:10 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Johan Santana is slated to pitch the opener for New York against Matt Belisle, with Mike Pelfrey getting the ball in Game 2 against Reds right-hander Bronson Arroyo.

Our View:Belisle and Pelfrey had been the scheduled starters Friday.
May 4, 2008
Johan Santana held the Diamondbacks to one run over six innings on Sunday. That line came despite six hits and four walks. Santana helped his own cause by striking out eight in the no-decision. His ERA fell to 2.91.

Our View:The scary thing? Santana hasn't gotten on a roll yet, and he is still putting up darn good numbers.
April 28, 2008
The Mets rotation will be shuffled. The Monday night game between the Pirates and Mets was postponed due to rain. Ian Snell and Johan Santana will now take the ball to the mound on Tuesday.

Our View:Nelson Figueroa was scheduled to start on Sunday against Arizona. Santana is expected to take the Sunday game and remain a two-start pitcher in Week 5.
April 28, 2008
Johan Santana will be on the hill tonight when the Mets host the Pirates, according to MLB.com. Santana is 3-2 with a 3.12 ERA and an excellent 0.92 WHIP over 34.2 innings, with 32 strikeouts and only five walks. He is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his career against the Pirates.

Our View:He continues to get more comfortable with the Mets and the National League with each passing start.
April 23, 2008
Johan Santana improved to 3-2 by limiting the Nationals to two runs over seven innings. On the night, Santana allowed seven hits, a walk and had four punchouts.

Our View:Through five starts the best pitcher in baseball owns a 3.12 ERA and 0.93 WHIP with 32 K in 34.2 IP. Not a bad start to his NL career wouldn't you say?
April 23, 2008
Johan Santana is set to make his fifth start with the Mets tonight against Washington, according to MLB.com. He is 2-2 with a 3.25 ERA over 27.2 innings, wiith 28 strikeouts. He faced the Nationals last season while a member of the Twins, and he took the loss in a 3-1 defeat.

Our View:He notably racked up 10 strikeouts in his last outing (against Philadelphia) while lowering his WHIP to 0.87, and he is beginning to get comfortable as the Mets' new ace.
April 18, 2008
Johan Santana was on his game on Friday night as he struck out 10 Phillies on his way to picking up his second victory of the season. Santana didn't walk a single batter and permitted just four hits and three runs on the night.

Our View:Santana out-dueled Cole Hamels in a battle of top-flight LHP's. Santana now has 28 K in 27.2 innings with just four BB on the year as he is starting to establish himself in the orange and blue.
April 12, 2008
Johan Santana was dealt his second loss on Saturday, as he allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits over 6.2 innings of work against Milwaukee, with two walks and seven strikeouts. He gave up three home runs in this game, and his ERA climbed to 3.05 for the season.

Our View:He is now 1-2 and has started a bit slow on the year for the Mets with four home runs allowed in three starts. Hopefully he will fare better in his next start.
April 5, 2008
Mets manager Willie Randolph is struggling to get his schedule settled, but it now appears he is going to give Johan Santana the start next Saturday versus the Brewers, rather than pushing him to the mound on Friday, according to the NYPost.com. Before today's game, Randolph told reporters that, with Friday's rainout pushing Santana out of his normally schedule start, he would give him the ball on Friday. Now he has pushed him into Saturday to get the schedule back to original form. Nelson Figueroa, on the roster as a fill-in for the injured Pedro Martinez, will get the start on Friday against the Brewers.
March 31, 2008
Johan Santana struck out eight in seven innings of work on Monday as the Mets beat the Marlins, 7-2. Santana -- who was traded to the Mets from Minnesota this winter and signed a new $137.5 million, six-year contract -- performed up to his deal in the opening day win.
March 23, 2008
Johan Santana will be the opening day starter for the Mets. However, the team is still undecided on a No. 5 starter. Orlando Hernandez and Mike Pelfrey are the two candidates to earn the role.
March 20, 2008
Johan Santana registered his strongest spring start as a Met striking out seven and allowing five hits. The left-hander didn't allow a run, and walked only one Orioles batter.
March 15, 2008
Johan Santana had an off day on the mound on Saturday as he allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits over five innings of work. He did have five strikeouts however.
March 10, 2008
Johan Santana was at his dominating best on Monday as he held the Red Sox to two hits while issuing no walks in four innings. Santana, as is his trademark, also didn't walk a batter in what could be described as the perfect tuneup outing for the regular season.
February 29, 2008
Johan Santana's spring training debut with the Mets didn't go so well, as the lefty, gave up three runs on four hits in two innings of a 5-4 loss to the Cardinals. Well, it's time to drop Santana down on your cheat sheet. Obviously we're kidding. He'll be just fine.
February 28, 2008
Johan Santana will make his first start for the Mets on Friday against the Cardinals, this according to the AP. “I’m just going to concentrate on what I’m doing on the mound. That’s what I’m supposed to do.” Great quote Johan. Luckily he is a lot better with a ball in his hand than a microphone. The Santana era begins on Friday, and not a day too soon for a Mets team hoping to put last season's collapse behind them.
February 28, 2008
ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that the Mets could be in trouble with the commissioner's office over the weak traveling squad they sent to Lakeland for Wednesday's Grapefruit League opener. According to Stark, Major league baseball sent a memo to all the teams this week, reminding them that they are required to send a "representative team'' to spring road games. The note mentioned teams are required to send at least four players who were regulars from the prior season. Unless the Mets literally didn't get that memo, they didn't exactly comply. How many regulars did they bring to Lakeland to play the Tigers? Exactly one -- outfielder Ryan Church. He hit cleanup, with utility man Marlon Anderson batting third and backup catcher Ramon Castro hitting fifth.
February 22, 2008
Johan Santana faced live hitters for the first time as a member of the Mets on Friday, and the results may not have been where they will be once the games start, but that doesn't mean the hitters weren't impressed, according to a report on MLB.com. "His arm action is ridiculous," David Wright said. "Every pitch looks exactly the same." Santana is the early front-runner for NL Cy Young if you believe the hype surrounding his move to NY. The truth of the matter is he is the most dominating starter pitcher in baseball and the only one worthy of being selected in the first round this season.
February 21, 2008
Johan Santana still has not faced live hitters, and there isn't a firm date as to when that will happen according to a report on the AP. There is nothing wrong with Santana so don't panic, the team just hasn't set a firm date for Santana to fire strikes at hitters. Look for it to occur soon, and for the hitters to wish they were facing batting practice pitchers again when it does.
February 10, 2008
General manager Brian Cashman won a personal victory by convincing the New York Yankees' hierarchy not to meet the Minnesota Twins' asking price for lefthander Johan Santana according to The Sporting News. Consider these six starters: Kevin Brown, Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Carl Pavano, Javier Vazquez and Jaret Wright. Cashman either traded for them or signed them as free agents since 2004. Only Pavano lasted longer than two seasons with the Yankees, and he has been injured most of the time. Johnson is the only member of the group to win more than 16 games with the Yankees. The experts, Las Vegas bookmakers, have the Yankees on average at 5-1 odds to win the World Series, their longest odds in the last 10 years. The future rests with young pitchers Joba Chamberlain, Philip Hughes and Ian Kennedy, Cashman said. Getting tied up in a long-term deal with Santana would be risky and payroll-crushing, Cashman insisted.
February 7, 2008
Manager Willie Randolph isn't sure whether he will start new acquisition Johan Santana or Pedro Martinez on opening day. He said a decision wouldn't be made until spring training. "I have two legitimate stoppers, so I have a choice to make," Randolph said in the NY Post. "But I'm sure it will be a pleasant choice. I've got a month to think about that." Randolph may have more loyalty to Pedro, but we've got a hunch that he'll end up going with the lefty.
February 2, 2008
Johan Santana passed his physical on Saturday, according to the AP. With that taken care of and a monster six-year, $137.5 million contract in hand, his trade to the Mets has been completed. NL-only leaguers rejoice! You can now draft the best pitcher in baseball this season.
February 1, 2008
The Mets and Johan Santana have agreed to a contract extension, according to the AP. The contract is worth $137.5 million over six years, and a club option for 2014 with a $5.5 million buyout. The deal is now pending a physical. Earlier the Mets had requested, and were granted, a two-hour extension to the 5:00 pm deadline to reach an agreement.
February 1, 2008
Johan Santana and the Mets were granted an extra two hours to work on a contract extension Friday, pushing the deadline to 7 p.m. EST, according to the AP. Team officials met with Santana's agent, Peter Greenberg, in Manhattan for the third straight day as the sides tried to negotiate a deal for the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner. The Mets must reach an agreement with Santana on a new contract for the trade to be completed.
February 1, 2008
Johan Santana and the Mets are expected to get a contract worked out before Friday's 5:00 PM ET deadline, according to the New York Daily News. The News quoted a baseball executive, who said, on condition of anonymity, "Usually, nothing gets done until the very end, like any negotiation." While all signs point to them working out the fine print and agreeing to terms, nothing is ever certain about a contract until both sides actually sign the deal. On the other hand, it would be a total PR disaster if the Mets fail to land the big fish called Santana. Once a deal is agreed to, all players in the trade will have to pass physicals before the trade can be completed.
January 29, 2008
ESPN.com is reporting that the Twins have agreed to trade Johan Santana to the Mets, pending the left-hander working out an extension with New York. The Mets have been granted a 48-to 72-hour window to work out a new contract with Santana. Minnesota will receive outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey in the deal.
January 29, 2008
The Twins have made a contract extension offer to Johan Santana that is believed to be at least $80 million for four years, but the two-time Cy Young Award winner appears committed to seeking a bigger payday elsewhere, according to the Boston Globe. The Red Sox, Yankees and Mets all remain interested in acquiring Santana via trade, and there's a chance that superstar lefty could be moved sometime this week. The Red Sox have so far stood firm in not offering Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury in the same package. Veteran outfielder Coco Crisp has been offered, along with Lester, plus a combination of prospects that includes pitcher Justin Masterson, infielder Jed Lowrie, and reportedly 19-year-old outfielder Ryan Kalish.
January 17, 2008
Despite that the Twins may not be completely happy with any of the Johan Santana offers they currently have on the table, Twins officials still think the lefty will be dealt before the start of spring training, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The Yankees, Red Sox and Mets are still the most likely destinations at this point.
January 10, 2008
A team from New York could be the best fit for Johan Santana. But this team plays in Queens, not The Bronx. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that the Mets have offered top pitching prospect Deolis Guerra, along with center fielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Kevin Mulvey and Phil Humber. The Twins have told the Mets they'd have a done deal if they would add prized outfield prospect Fernando Martinez. He would likely replace Gomez in the deal.
January 3, 2008
Hank Steinbrenner believes the Yankees have made the top offer for Johan Santana, according to the NY Daily News. "I think the Twins realize our offer is the best one," Steinbrenner said Wednesday in a telephone interview. "I feel confident they're not going to trade him before checking with us one last time and I think they think we've already made the best offer." It's unclear exactly what the proposed deal includes, but it's been speculated that it includes, Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera, Jeff Marquez and possibly another prospect.
