Player Notes
October 17, 2008
Johan Santana was not named one of the three finalists for the NL Outstanding Pitcher of the Year award that is handed out by Topps and the Major League Baseball Players Association, according to the NY Post. The finalists where Tim Lincecum, CC Sabathia and Brandon Webb.

Our View:Just another example of people being seduced by the power of the dark side, in this case win totals. Santana finished with a better WHIP, a lower ERA, more strikeouts and more innings pitched than Webb but he fell six wins behind (22 to 16).
October 1, 2008
Johan Santana underwent surgery today to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, according to the NY Post.

Our View:The arthroscopic procedure was deemed successful and he is expected to make a full recovery and be ready for spring training.
September 30, 2008
Johan Santana, a favorite for the NL Cy Young award, would lock in a $25 million option for the 2014 season if he ends up with the hardware, according to Sports Illustrated.

Our View:The contract states that if he wins a Cy Young award, or finishes in the top-3 twice over the first six years of the deal, then the $25 million option is activated. Looks like Santana will need to find a nice shelter for all that dough. Hopefully he isn't heavily invested in the stock market.
September 29, 2008
Johan Santana has been named the NL Pitcher of the Month for September, according to the AP. He earned the honor by going 4-0 with a 1.83 ERA over six starts in the month.

Our View:He did his job, but could not single-handedly prevent the Mets from self destructing down the stretch and missing the playoffs for the second straight season.
September 27, 2008
Pitching on three days rest, Johan Santana threw a complete game shutout. He used 117 pitches to strike out nine and gave up just three hits as the Mets won 2-0 over the Marlins.

Our View:Santana's performance is as clutch as it gets for a regular season game. He clearly still has what it takes to be one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball.
