Fernando Rodney made the ninth inning an exasperating one for Tigers fans one again, giving up two runs on three hits but ultimately getting his sixth save of the year in Detroit's 4-3 win over the Royals.

Our View:Rodney struck two batters out, but he also walked a hitter, and his grip on the role as closer has to be very loose.
August 22, 2008
The Detroit Free Press believes Fernando Rodney could be the Tigers' best option to close games in 2009. The Tigers' coaching staff made a few adjustments to his delivery. They had him quit turning so much in his windup when he threw his fastball. And they got him to stay more balanced over the rubber during his delivery. The changes have had favorable results and has verified to the team that he can be a full-time closer.

Our View:Barring a collapse down the stretch, Rodney looks to be a top candidate to be the Tigers' closer next season, assuming they don't add a free agent, such as Francisco Rodriguez.
August 18, 2008
Fernando Rodney picked up the save for the Tigers Monday, pitching 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief while striking out two batters.

Our View:Rodney has been terrific recently, picking up four saves while tossing nine scoreless innings with 13 strikeouts.
August 10, 2008
Tigers reliever Fernando Rodney has been easing back his velocity in an attempt to gain better control of his pitches, according to MLive.com. "To just go out there and rev back and throw it at 98 and not be close to the strike zone, that's counterproductive," said Detroit manager Jim Leyland.

Our View:Rodney's biggest problem has been his control, but in his last 4.1 innings, he has walked just one batter, an obvious improvement. His fantasy value is much higher if he can stay as the closer and keep from putting men on base via bases on balls.
August 7, 2008
Tigers reliever Fernando Rodney picked up his second save of the year, going 1.1 innings while striking out two and walking none.

Our View:After four outings in a row giving up at least one run, Rodney has now gone two outings and 4.1 innings allowing no runs, and more importantly, only walking one batter. If he has good control, he can be a solid closer, and useful fantasy asset.
July 27, 2008
The AP reports that manager Jim Leyland said in Sunday's pregame show that Fernando Rodney would replace Todd Jones as the team's closer. He recorded the final five outs on Sunday against the White Sox while walking two, allowing one hit and one run. He had three strikeouts.

Our View:Rodney is not a lock to keep his new role. He has a 5.17 ERA and 15 Ks to 11 walks and was working extra bullpen sessions last week to get his mechanics smoothed out. Zumaya may have seemed like the more logical option. However, he left the game with soreness in his shoulder.
June 21, 2008
The Tigers will have Fernando Rodney throw short bullpen sessions every other day in an effort to get his mechanics in order. "I'm going to have Rodney throwing every other day in the bullpen for about five minutes, see if we can get some rhythm and stuff going," manager Jim Leyland said on MLB.com. "We've got to get him throwing strikes."

Our View:The sessions will go on whether or not the reliever pitched in the game the previous night or may pitch that day. Rodney has allowed five runs in just 1/3 of an inning while walking three since returning from the DL.
June 17, 2008
Fernando Rodney, making his first appearance of the year, allowed a 3-run home run to John Bowker in the bottom of the eighth inning on Monday night on his way to recording only one out for the Tigers.

Our View:The good news is that Rodney was throwing in the low 90's, the bad news was the results. He will certainly become a valuable member of the bullpen before the end of the year, but he looked rusty with his location tonight.
June 16, 2008
Fernando Rodney, out due to shoulder tendinitis, has been activated from the DL on Monday, according to the Associated Press. “I don’t know exactly how I’ll use Rodney, whether in a big-game situation," manager Jim Leyland said. "I’d like to get his feet wet for an inning. It was nice to put his name on the card. It’s been a while.”

Our View:Rodney will be joined by bullpen mate Joel Zumaya, hopefully by the end of the week, as the Tigers' pen will finally begin to resemble the unit they thought they would have this off-season. Rodney has suffered multiple setbacks this year, so take a careful approach toward adding him to your roster.
June 14, 2008
Fernando Rodney is on track to rejoin the Tigers on Monday, the Detroit News reports. He has missed the entire season to date due to right shoulder tendinitis.

Our View:Rodney may work his way back into the back of the bullpen eventually, but it's not going to happen right away. Fantasy owners shouldn't put too much stock in him after he's missed so much time.
June 10, 2008
Fernando Rodney threw in front of Tigers pitching coach Chuck Hernandez on Tuesday afternoon. The reliever is on his way back from right shoulder tendinitis and is trying to work out any mechanical issues, MLB.com reports. Rodney will make a two-inning outing at Triple-A Toledo on Friday and is likely still a week away from returning to the majors.

Our View:It wasn't too long ago that Rodney was a potential option to replace the sometimes-shaky Todd Jones, but the Tigers have to simply hope Fernando can come back and stay healthy. We don't view him as a closer candidate at this point.
June 2, 2008
Relievers Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya are both expected to begin their rehab assignments on Tuesday, according to MLB.com. Rodney will be sent to Triple-A Toledo, and Zumaya will go to Class-A Lakeland.

Our View:Once they begin pitching Tuesday, the Tigers can keep them on rehab for up to 30 days before they must be activated from the DL or moved. Neither is expected to need the full 30 days, and Manager Jim Leyland mentioned that he hopes to have them back sometime this month. They will both provide a sizable boost to the Tigers' bullpen. Rodney recently visited Dr. James Andrews, but he found nothing wrong with his ailing right shoulder other than tendinitis, and he progressed well since then.
May 23, 2008
Fernando Rodney tossed two innings Friday in his second extended spring game this week, according to MLB.com. The reliever was clocked in the 93-94 MPH range, up from the 88-89 he was clocked at earlier in the week. Rodney has battled shoulder tendinitis since spring training.

Our View:A rehab assignment for Rodney has not been discussed yet, but it can't be that far off.
May 23, 2008
Fernando Rodney will throw two innings in an extended spring training game on Friday, the Detroit Free Press reports. He is on the DL due to right shoulder tendinitis and does not have a timetable for his return.

Our View:The Tigers haven't set a timetable for Rodney, at least not publicly. The reliever will likely use up all 30 days of a minor league rehab assignment, and we'll set our clocks once that designation begins.
May 18, 2008
Like fellow injured hurler Joel Zumaya, Fernando Rodney has been cleared to throw batting practice on his way back from shoulder tendinitis, according to MLB.com. "They won't go out for rehab until they're absolutely, 100 percent ready," manager Jim Leyland said. "When you do that, the clock starts ticking. I have no idea when that's going to be."

Our View:The Tigers will welcome back Rodney with open arms when he is ready, but as you just read, we don't really have a time line as to when that might happen.
May 1, 2008
Fernando Rodney (shoulder) threw a six minute session off the mound on Thursday at the team's spring training facility, according to MLB.com. This was the first throwing session for Rodney since he visited Dr. James Andrews and received a positive report. "He felt this was his best bullpen session to date," Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said.

Our View:The Tigers could certainly use a boost in the pen since they are trotting out a couple of guys most of you have likely never heard of before. This was nothing more than a first step, but it was still a very encouraging one for a guy who has had one setback after another this season.
April 22, 2008
Fernando Rodney has begun throwing again, but he has no timetable as he recovers from right shoulder tendinitis, MLB.com reports.

Our View:Rodney has had a series of setbacks with his shoulder, and we don't imagine the Tigers will feel good until he's throwing at full velocity off a mound. He has almost no fantasy value at this point.
April 17, 2008
Fernando Rodney's latest test on his injured shoulder showed no additional structural damage, according to the Detroit News. Rodney will resume throwing in 3-5 days.

Our View:This is good news for him, but there remains no timetable set for his return to the Tigers.
April 14, 2008
Fernando Rodney is headed to Alabama to meet with Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday. The reliever has been dealing with right shoulder tendinitis. "He still isn’t able to get over the hump," head athletic trainer Kevin Rand informs the Detroit Free Press. "He still isn’t able to extend and get out there and finish." Previous exams have shown no major damage in the joint.

Our View:We always hold our breath when a player visits Dr. Andrews, as it often turns into a serious surgery. We can only wait and see on Rodney.
April 12, 2008
Fernando Rodney threw a favorable session on Friday, according to the Detroit News. He hurled 35-40 pitches in a bullpen session on Friday in Lakeland, Fla., and his velocity was reportedly about 80% and he threw, "with greater intensity." He will throw again on Monday, and this was an encouraging outing for him.

Our View:This is good news, but his fantasy stock is yet to go back up.
April 8, 2008
Fernando Rodney expects to throw off a mound this week, according to the Detroit Free Press. He is on the DL with right shoulder tendinitis, and is expected to throw off a mound later this week, in what could be a major test of his ability to pitch for the Tigers in the near future. He has notably felt chronic pain while pitching off the mound this spring, and Manager Leyland commented on Saturday that he doesn’t expect Rodney to pitch in the majors anytime soon. Rodney also stopped a Friday bullpen session early because of pain in the shoulder. His fantasy stock will continue to drop.
April 5, 2008
Detroit relief pitcher Fernando Rodney remains a significant question mark after hope planted in a rehab bullpen session has gone sour, according to the Detroit News. Battling tendinitis in his throwing shoulder, Rodney hit the pen on Friday at Comerica Park and failed to assure any of the coaches that things were progressing. "I'm not going into any details about it," said manager Jim Leyland. "I'm not going to get into medical stuff. There was nothing (medically related) discovered or anything. It just wasn't good." In response to the events, Leyland has added RHP Francis Beltran to the active roster and has optioned OF Ryan Raburn to Toledo. This is bad news for a team in need of relief options from the bullpen. We will update this situation when additional information about Rodney and his health becomes available.
April 3, 2008
Fernando Rodney will throw a bullpen session on Thursday in Lakeland, Fla., according to MLB.com. This will mark the first time that the injured Tigers reliever has thrown since being put on the 15-day DL near the end of spring training. Rodney is dealing with tendinitis in his right shoulder, and he will not throw much. The Tigers want to be very careful with him, especially since he made a trip to the DL in 2007. He could also strengthen their struggling bullpen. The team will evaluate his session on Thursday before making any further decisions. Manager Leyland commented, "We'll have to wait and see how that all plays out. I'm not going to get all excited and rush it."
March 30, 2008
Fernando Rodney has been placed on the 15-day DL, according to Detroit News. He is battling a right shoulder injury and the team is in need of relievers as Zumaya has also been placed on the DL.
March 23, 2008
Fernando Rodney was examined Sunday by Tigers' orthopedic specialist Dr. Stephen Lemos, and noted that he was cleared to begin playing catch, and GM Dombrowski added that Rodney could be throwing off the mound by the end of the new week. This according to Tigers Insider. Rodney is still expected to open the season on the DL.
March 18, 2008
Fernando Rodney will open the season on the disabled list, according Sports Network. The report noted that the Tigers are not officially required to make a roster move with Rodney for another 10 days, but announced Tuesday he would go on the DL. Rodney has upside as a middle reliever due his K Rate and cheap saves. In fact the right-hander would be in line to vulture saves if Todd Jones struggled like he did a year ago.
March 16, 2008
After yesterday's loss to the Yankees, Detroit manager Jim Leyland had a few vague but somewhat insightful words concerning Detroit's relief pitching, according to MLB.com. When asked what the team might do during these final days of spring training, Leyland replied, "I've got my team already with the exception of one guy. I've got 24." That would seem to indicate the team is moving forward with all hands on deck staying put, including Fernando Rodney. Rodney has struggled to stay healthy and prove anything in game action. He has been one of the more concerning question marks in the mix for relief work, but a bullpen of 24 would, technically speaking, leave one position open to get to 25. With rumors swirling of a potential trade involving 3B Brandon Inge, it may be that this situation is facing a potential change in chemistry. Stay tuned.
March 14, 2008
Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Thursday that he considers Fernando Rodney "unlikely" to be ready for the start of the regular season, according to the Detroit Free Press. The news is not surprising, since elbow stiffness has kept him from taking part in a spring game thus far.
March 13, 2008
Fernando Rodney took part in his first mound throwing session this spring, this according to MLB.com. The right-hander threw only fastballs off the mound in the Tigers bullpen in what pitching coach Chuck Hernandez called a seven-minute session. It was his first session off of a mound since early in camp, when he came up with tendinitis in his right shoulder. "I feel very loose today," Rodney said afterwards. "I didn't try to do too much." Rodney's status for opening day is still unclear.
March 11, 2008
Fernando Rodney's return to the mound has been delayed for two days, according to The Detroit Free Press. He is still battling shoulder tendinitis and is running out of time to get ready for opening day.
March 10, 2008
Fernando Rodney is expected to pitch on Tuesday, according to DetroitNews.com. Coach Leyland mentioned this on Rodney's recovery from tendonitis,"This will be the big week, the telling week. But I'm reluctant to emphasize that because I don't want someone rushing himself with the thought, if I don't get moving, I won't make the team." Rodney recorded 54 strikeouts over 50 innings in 2007 and will have a good chance to save games for Detroit if healthy, especially if Todd Jones continues to struggle.
March 8, 2008
Fernando Rodney said Friday that he plans to throw a bullpen session next week, according to the Detroit Free Press. "I feel ready to go," he said. Rodney has been shut down since late last month due to a sore shoulder, but he should still have time to prepare himself for opening day, barring a setback.
February 27, 2008
Fernando Rodney had an MRI on his sore shoulder Monday. Although the exam revealed no structural damage, the righty won't throw again until Monday, according to MLive. Despite the setback, Rodney thinks he'll still be ready for opening day. With Joel Zumaya likely out until around the All-Star break, Rodney would be in line for saves should something happen to Todd Jones, so his situation is definitely worth monitoring.
February 24, 2008
Fernando Rodney admitted Saturday that his sore shoulder won't allow him to be ready for the Tigers' exhibition opener this coming week, according to the Detroit Free Press. In fact, Rodney said he probably won't even begin throwing in the bullpen until at least next weekend. It remains concerning that he's again dealing with the same problem that forced him to the DL for over a month last season.
February 22, 2008
Fernando Rodney has stopped throwing off a mound this week due to recurring pain in his pitching shoulder, though he did play catch for eight minutes on Thursday, according to the Detroit Free Press. "We're kind of going slow with Rodney," Leyland said. "Not because we're that concerned, but because we know what went on last year." What happened last year, was that Rodney missed a month due to soreness in the joint. What is somewhat concerning, is that Rodney said the pain he feels now is similar to the pain that forced him to the DL last season.
February 21, 2008
Fernando Rodney, who experienced soreness in his right shoulder earlier in the week, played catch for eight minutes on Thursday morning without issue, notes MLive.com. "It's nothing bad,'' Rodney said. Rodney is expected to be ready for the start of the Spring Training schedule.
