January 6, 2009 The Tigers are yet to find a closer and there is speculation that the club could turn to Fernando Rodney as their ninth-inning man in 2009, according to the Our View:He did not fare well when given a chance to close last season, and it is questionable if the club or manager Jim Leyland would actually count on him to close in 2009. He is best-suited to work as a setup man. |

November 2, 2008 The Detroit Tigers are offering up reliever Fernando Rodney to teams who need closers, according to the Our View:Rodney is all over the place with his control, with a staggering BB/9 rate of 6.69. He has the ability to strike people out, and accumulated 13 saves last season, but is a guy fantasy owners should know will have a chance to be yanked out of the closer's role at any point due to his control issues. |

September 16, 2008 Fernando Rodney blew his sixth save of the season on Tuesday night when he allowed six baserunners and three runs without recording an out in the ninth inning against the Rangers. Our View:Rodney has confirmed once and for all that he cannot handle the closer's duty. Do not expect the Tigers to give it to anyone else for 2008, but expect a return to the setup role for Rodney in 2009. |

September 9, 2008 Fernando Rodney served up two hits and one run over 0.2 innings on Tuesday night and blew a save against the A's. He ended up taking the loss, his fifth of the season. Rodney is 0-5 and has converted 10 of his 15 save chances. Our View:Rodney had been doing a nice job over the past four or five weeks, but opponents have been getting to him in August. He remains useful in fantasy leagues because he gets saves. |

September 6, 2008 Fernando Rodney picked up his ninth save of the season with a wild ninth inning on Saturday. He loaded the bases before getting Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau out to end the game. Our View:Rodney has not been a reliable closer for the Tigers but he was able to get it done on Saturday. His ERA is down to 4.42. On the road he is 0-3 with a 7.02 ERA. |
