Player Notes
October 23, 2008
Brett Myers went seven innings and gave up four runs (three earned) as the Phillies fell 2-4 to the Rays in Game 2 of the World Series on Thursday. He allowed three runs in the first two innings but was able to settle down and pitch well after that. He struck out just two hitters, allowed seven hits and walked three.

Our View:Myers has consistently allowed runs early on in games this season. He will likely pitch again in Game 6 if it is necessary.
October 18, 2008
The Philadelphia Phillies will use the same rotation in the World Series that they used in the NLCS, according to MLB.com. Cole Hamels will start Game 1, followed by Brett Myers in Game 2, Jamie Moyer in Game 3 in Philadelphia, and Joe Blanton Game 4.

Our View:It worked for the team in the NLCS, so why mess with a good thing? There was a thought that Jamie Moyer would be pushed back because of his difficult postseason, but Philly manager Charlie Manuel decided to keep him where he is.
October 10, 2008
Brett Myers allowed five earned runs on six hits over five innings in Friday's 8-5 win over the Dodgers in Game 2 of the NLCS at Citizens Bank Park, with four walks and six strikeouts. As a hitter, he impressively went 3-for-3 in the game with three RBI. Philadelphia now leads the series 2-0.

Our View:Myers had a tough outing, but the Phillies' hitters rallied around him with plenty of run support for him to claim a win. Myers is now 2-0 in the postseason, as he also won Game 2 of the NLDS against Milwaukee.
October 7, 2008
Right-hander Brett Myers will start Game 2 on Friday in Philadelphia according to MLB.com. Myers had it working in Game 2 of the NLDS as he only allowed two earned runs on two hits over seven innings over the Brewers at Citizens Bank Park, with three walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:Myers has fared significantly better at home than on the road, going 7-5 with a 3.01 ERA at Citizens Bank Park and 3-8 with a 6.21 ERA away from it. He shutout the Dodgers on August 25th over seven innings while scattering nine hits and three walks.
October 2, 2008
Brett Myers took care of business in Game 2 of the NLDS as he only allowed two earned runs on two hits over seven innings in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Brewers at Citizens Bank Park, with three walks and four strikeouts. The Phillies now hold a 2-0 lead in the series.

Our View:Myers only went 10-13 in the regular season with a 4.55 ERA and 1.38 WHIP, but is off to a strong start in the playoffs.
September 30, 2008
Manager Charlie Manuel set the rotation for the first round of the playoffs and has slated Brett Myers to take the hill in Game 2, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. As previously stated, Cole Hamels will pitch Game 1. Jamie Moyer will follow Myers in Game 3.

Our View:Myers has been unstable this season with a 4.55 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 30 starts.
September 24, 2008
Brett Myers was lit up for the second straight start on Wednesday, this time by the Atlanta Braves. He gave up 12 baserunners and six runs in 4.1 innings of work and moved to 10-13 on the year.

Our View:Just when he seemed to have put it all together, Myers has had back-to-back horrendous outings at the worst time of the year for the Phillies.
September 19, 2008
Brett Myers was torched for ten runs on Friday against the Marlins and he earned his 12th loss of the season.

Our View:This was Myers' worst and shortest start since being recalled from the minors and came at a time when the Phillies could ill-afford to lose. He pitched a complete game in his last appearance.
September 14, 2008
Brett Myers, pitching on short rest, tossed a complete game two-hitter to help the Phillies to sweep a double header with the Brewers with a 6-1 victory on Sunday night.

Our View:Myers only struck out four, but he was extremely efficient needing just 95 pitches to record 27 outs. Myers is 7-2 in 11 starts since being recalled from a brief stint in the minors, and in those 11 starts he has posted a scintillating set of ratios (1.69 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP). Few are hurling the ball it better right now.
September 11, 2008
Brett Myers could have his next start pushed up to Sunday in order to face the Brewers, according to the Phillies Official Website. "I don't know," Phils pitching coach Rich Dubee said. "It depends on how deep he can take us. That's probably the drawback. He's a max effort guy, so that might be a concern."

Our View:Myers threw 117 pitches on Wednesday and will need to have a successful bullpen on Friday in order to have his start pushed up. However, a half dead Myers would likely give the Phillies a better shot than Kyle Kendrick who is 1-4 with a 11.35 ERA in his last six starts. If Myers can't go, it appears that J.A. Happ will make the start.
September 10, 2008
Brett Myers was solid for seven innings, but he allowed a fourth run in the eighth inning to pick up his 11th loss of the year. For the day, Myers allowed just one walk while striking out nine Marlins.

Our View:Meyers continues to do a solid job on the hill, he just didn't emerge with the victory today. This was the first loss in five starts, and he has certainly been piling up the strikeouts of late with at least eight punchouts in six straight appearances.
September 10, 2008
Phillies right-hander Brett Myers has been throwing the ball extremely well of late, but he does not have the best match-up tonight against the Marlins. Players on Florida's roster have hit a combined .298 off of him in their careers, and among the nine players with at least 10 career at-bats against Myers, all but two have an average of .315 lifetime against him. In fact, three players are hitting at least .400 in their career against Myers.

Our View:As you may have gathered, this does not seem like an optimal match-up for Myers. We won't recommend holding him out of your lineup, but just don't be shocked if his stat line isn't great.
September 5, 2008
Brett Myers improved to 6-1 since the All-Star break with an excellent performance in New York on Friday. He lasted eight innings and shutout the Mets' usually productive lineup. He struck out 10 while allowing just three hits.

Our View:Myers has clealy found his stride since the break. He has not allowed a run in three of his past four starts, yielding only two runs in his last 31 innings. Expect a solid September from him.
August 30, 2008
Brett Myers was in control in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field, as he only allowed two earned runs on 11 hits over seven innings, with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Our View:Myers has now won three straight decisions, and has allowed two or less earned runs in each outing. He is worth targeting for the final month of the regular season if available.
August 25, 2008
Brett Myers disappeared for the first half of the season, but he has finally reappeared, throwing seven shutout innings and striking out eight to earn his seventh win in Philadelphia's 5-0 win over the Dodgers.

Our View:In his seven starts after coming back from Triple-A, Meyers is 4-1 with a 1.68 ERA. It's possible he's still available in fantasy leagues, but after Monday's performance, he won't be for long.
August 25, 2008
Brett Myers is finally pitching like the ace he was -- and is presumed to be. He has a 1.49 ERA in his past five starts with 23 strikeouts in his last three starts (23.2 innings). The right-hander 3-1 with a 1.94 ERA in six starts since returning from a stint in Triple-A. His only losing effort came against the LA Dodgers, a game he could easily have won. Myers faces the Dodgers again tonight, and his 2.86 ERA in 11 career appearances against the Big Blue gives him a chance to continue his winning ways.

Our View:Myers has posted a fantastic 26:4 K:BB Ratio in his last 30 innings and his home runs and walks allowed have decreased significantly.
August 20, 2008
Phillies right-hander Brett Myers has continued his string of great performances since coming off the disabled list, leading Philadelphia to 4-0 victory over Washington by throwing a complete game shutout. Myers scattered nine hits on the night, but walked noone and struck out nine.

Our View:Myers is hot right now, and fantasy owners should be snatching him up off the waiver wire if he is still available. Since coming off the DL, Myers is 3-1 with a 1.97 ERA.
August 16, 2008
Brett Myers has been pitching very well since coming off the disabled list, posting a 2-1 record with a 2.48 ERA in five starts, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:Myers is once again becoming the pitcher that fantasy owners had counted on. Five starts is not necessarily a large sample size, but NL-only owners should gobble him up, and mixed leaguers should take a long, hard look at him depending on their needs.
August 14, 2008
Brett Myers picked up his tenth loss of the season, but he made an effective start, throwing seven innings and giving up just three earned runs with eight strikeouts in the Phillies 3-1 loss to Los Angeles.

Our View:Myers has been effective lately, and has not allowed more than three earned runs since his last start in June, before he went on the disabled list. Myers has seen his ERA drop from 5.84 to 5.02 in that time.
August 9, 2008
Philadelphia RHP Brett Myers enjoyed another strong day on teh mound, getting the win by a score of 4-2 over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Myers pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Our View:Myers moves to 5-9 on the season with an ERA of 5.09. In four starts since returning from injury, Myers has allowed just six combined earned runs with seven total walks and 13 strikeout.
August 3, 2008
Brett Myers didn't pick up a decision on Sunday but he still pitched fairly well permitting just two runs in six innings against the Cardinals.

Our View:Myers was taken deep by Ryan Ludwick, but otherwise only allowed three hits without walking a single batter. Myers has allowed two runs over 13 innings in his last two starts (1.38 ERA) while giving up just nine base runners (0.69 WHIP). If he is on waivers in your league, take a chance and pick Myers up.
July 29, 2008
Brett Myers had arguably his best start of the season, throwing seven innings, allowing just four hits and no earned runs against Washington, earing his fourth victory of the season.

Our View:It is important to note that Myers, who only struck out two hitters, did this against one of the worst offensive teams in baseball, so before jumping to acquire him on your fantasy team, let's see if he can put two solid starts together.
July 23, 2008
Brett Myers, in his first game back with the Phillies, held the Mets to just three runs in five innings despite the fact that he struck out only two batters and walked five.

Our View:Myers was all over the place early on, but he settled down and kept the Phillies in the game before Ryan Madson blew the game in the sixth inning by allowing three runs. Not a great outing by any means, but at least he didn't allow a home run.
July 21, 2008
The Phillies recalled pitcher Brett Myers from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday, the Sports Network reports. He made four minor league starts at three different levels since being sent down on July 1. Myers will start on Wednesday against the Mets.

Our View:We're not sure why the Phillies didn't wait until Wednesday to make this move, but the timing doesn't really matter. Myers was able to clear his head in the minors. We remain wary.
July 19, 2008
Brett Myers is back with the Phillies after a much-needed four-start stint in the minors to get his stuff back. "I had to get my swagger back," Myers said in the AP. "I felt like I accomplished that." Myers went 1-3 in his four starts but boasted a 3.00 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 27 innings.

Our View:Myers has yet to officially be activated, but he's slated to return next Wednesday against the Mets. It would be hard for fantasy owners to trust him given his numbers on the year.
July 19, 2008
Brett Myers lasted 6.2 innings on Friday and gave up just two runs at Single-A. He will likely receive the call to start against the Mets on Wednesday.

Our View:Myers has been an overwhelming disappointment this season and it's hard to project a strong outing against the Mets.
July 14, 2008
Brett Myers is expected to get called up from Double-A Reading to start in the Phillies' rotation on July 23 against the Mets, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Pitching coach Rick Dubee said, "He's gaining on it. His fastball command is getting better. I think Brett needed to get out of the environment."

Our View:He is not worth waiting for in anything but larger NL-only leagues, as he held a 3-9 mark over 17 starts, with a poor 5.84 ERA and 1.56 WHIP.
July 12, 2008
Brett Myers is making his third minor league start today with Double-A Reading, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View:Myers is also expected to make another start before hopefully returning to the Phillies. He is not worth waiting for, as he held a 3-9 mark over 17 starts, with a poor 5.84 ERA and 1.56 WHIP.
July 9, 2008
Brett Myers denied a rumor that stated he wants to be traded, according to the Philadelphia Daily News and Inquirer. Myers said, "Those are false statements. I don't want to be traded. I never asked to be traded. I don't want to go anywhere. I like it here. I have a home here. I have a family here."

Our View:He would hold reduced value if he wanted to be traded right now anyway, as he struggled with a 3-9 record and 5.84 ERA prior to being demoted to the minors. He plans to return to the Phillies after the All-Star break.
July 8, 2008
Brett Myers was solid in his Triple-A outing on Monday, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. He allowed two earned runs over 7.1 innings with six strikeouts, and said, "I really felt good out there tonight. My location was a lot better than my last outing. I thought I threw the ball well and I threw 65 to 70 percent fastballs."

Our View:He plans to return to the Phillies after the All-Star break. He isn't worth waiting for as a fantasy hurler however, as he is 3-9 with a 5.84 ERA and 1.56 WHIP.
July 3, 2008
Brett Myers was mediocre at best in his first Triple-A start since being optioned to the minors earlier this week. He allowed three runs over five innings.

Our View:Myers struck out six, walked two, and gave up five hits. He will likely make at least two more starts in the minors.
July 1, 2008
Brett Myers has been optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, in hopes he gets back on track, according to MLB.com. "I can't say enough about Brett's willingness to accept this assignment," Phillies general manager Pat Gillick said.

Our View:Myers has been a disaster this season, and though he should not be on fantasy staffs anyway, this is confirmation of that. He is currently 3-9 with a 5.84 ERA. His velocity has waned, and he has given up 24 home runs in 101.2 innings.
June 30, 2008
According to the Phillies' official website, skipper Charlie Manuel wasn't ready to reveal his decision about the status of starter Brett Myers. In fact there is no evidence that any decision has even been made. Myers remains in limbo for his next start, scheduled for Thursday in Atlanta "I'll have it by Tuesday, probably," Manuel said. "We'll talk about it [Monday]."

Our View:Manuel will have discussions with pitching coach Rich Dubee and general manager Pat Gillick, who said on Sunday's pregame show that the Phillies might make an "adjustment" to the rotation.
June 29, 2008
Brett Myers appears unlikely to make his next scheduled start on Thursday. Nothing is official, but the club is leaning towards pulling Myers from the rotation. "Right now, that's the way we're leaning, but we'll think about it," manager Charlie Manuel tells MLB.com. Reliever Chad Durbin would likely start in Myers' place.

Our View:We should have an official word on Monday or Tuesday, but fantasy owners should pull Myers from their lineups, provided he's even in them. Durbin could make only one start before giving way to Kris Benson.
June 28, 2008
The AP is reporting that right-hander Brett Myers could be pulled from the Phillies rotation and put back in the bullpen as Brad Lidge's setup man. Since winning two straight decisions in mid-April, Myers (3-9, 5.84 ERA in 17 starts) is 1-8 in his last 13 starts. "I talked to (Myers) for quite a while. He's struggling and trying to find it. Whatever he tries doesn't seem to work," Manuel said. "I'll think about what I want to do the next few days and we'll come up with something. We don't have a lot of options."

Our View:The report noted that while Manuel didn't announce any changes, it was clear he and Dubee aren't pleased with how things are going in Myers' return to the rotation.
June 15, 2008
Brett Myers was rocked for six earned runs on eight hits over six innings in Sunday's tough 7-6 loss to the Cardinals, with no walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:He gave up two home runs in the game, and has now allowed 20 over his 15 starts. He left the game with a no decision, avoiding his ninth loss, but his ERA climbed to 5.56.
June 10, 2008
Philadelphia RHP Brett Myers suffered through a horrendous evening on the mound as his Phillies took the 5-4 loss versus Florida. Myers pitched 5 1/3 innings to allow five runs (all earned) on seven hits with four walks, five strikeouts, and three home runs allowed.

Our View:After 10 homers allowed in April, the flag of concern was sent up the pole. However, Myers had not allowed a single homer in his last four starts coming into tonight.
June 4, 2008
Philadelphia RHP Brett Myers put a strong performance on the mound tonight, but there was no offensive support to speak of and thus he suffered his seventh loss of the season, falling to Cincinnati 2-0. Myers pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on one hit with six walks and eight strikeouts.

Our View:Myers was a horrific 1-4 through May despite pitching well, and now his June is starting off on the worst possible note.
May 19, 2008
Brett Myers lasted six innings on Monday night, and though the results weren't bad he still fell to 2-5 on the year with the loss. Myers allowed eight hits and three runs on the night.

Our View:Losing was the bad news, but the good news is that he kept the ball in the yard and gave his team the chance to win. As long as he continues to do that, the results will more often than not be positive.
May 15, 2008
Will the real Brett Myers please take the mound? Myers took an 8-5 beating at the hands of the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night. The hard-throwing right-hander allowed eight runs (six earned) on nine hits, walking three and striking out six in 4.1 innings of work.

Our View:Myers now has only three quality works in eight starts and his 5.91 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, H/9 of 11.1, and a HR/9 of 2.53 are terribly disappointing.
May 14, 2008
Philadelphia RHP Brett Myers suffered through a horrendous outing in the Phillies 8-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Myers lasted just 4 1/3 innings, giving up eight total runs (six earned) on nine hits, walking three and striking out six.

Our View:The bulk of the damage was done on three homers allowed, all in the first two innings of the game to surrender three total runs.
May 8, 2008
Brett Myers needed 101 pitches to get through five innings on Friday as he fell to 2-3 with a loss to the D'backs. Myers allowed seven runs, six earned, on nine hits and three walks.

Our View:Myers has now allowed 18 runs in his last 24 innings and he really seems to be falling apart. He is still striking out a lot of batters despite losing some speed off his fastball, but the real culprit has been the long ball as he has allowed an astonishing 13 HR through nine starts.
May 2, 2008
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Brett Myers is working to rediscover his fastball. The right-handed opening day starter for the Phils has been long-tossing, as pitching coach Rich Dubee had suggested. This, in the attempt to build arm strength. He also has looked at film. Myers, who will start tomorrow night against the San Francisco Giants at Citizens Bank Park, recently looked at film from starts last season against the Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros. He thinks his lack of velocity has more to do with his legs than his arm. "I wasn't using my legs as much as I thought I was," Myers said. "In my last start [in Pittsburgh], my leg was straight and I wasn't getting any drive off of it."

Our View:Myers (2-2, 5.11 ERA) has also been working on improving his conditioning. There's a reason why guys can throw the ball hard, and most of the time conditioning plays a big part in it. Look for Myers to improve his numbers as spring passes and summer approaches.
April 17, 2008
Brett Myers allowed just one run over seven innings on Thursday to pick up his second victory of the season. Myers struck out eight Astros batters, walked only one, and allowed just five hits.

Our View:The only run Myers allowed today was on a solo HR, the sixth home run he has allowed in just four games. If he can cut back on the taters he would appear to be in line for a big-time season.
April 11, 2008
Brett Myers allowed three runs over eight innings to pick up his first victory of the season for the Phillies. Myers punched out five Cubs on the night, but he continues to be dogged by home runs, he allowed three solo shots on the night, which conspires to hold him back from joining the elite.
April 7, 2008
Brett Myers isn't throwing with his usual velocity, which may be the reason for his early struggles. "His fastball was sitting 89, 90, every now and then he touched 91. He's usually a 90-to-94 guy," manager Charlie Manuel tells the Philadelphia Daily News. "(On Saturday) he was throwing some breaking balls and looked like he was throwing splits, a changeup every now and then, mixing the fastball in, but he didn't have the velocity or the command on the fastball that he usually has." Myers says he feels fine, and his explanation for his problems is that he might be tipping some pitches.
March 31, 2008
Brett Myers was average on his return to the rotation. The right-hander tossed four scoreless innings, but his lack of conditioning cost him in the fifth. Myers allowed four runs (three earned) and five hits in five innings. He also walked two and hit two batters while striking out two.
March 26, 2008
Brett Myers improved his record to 3-0 against the Yankees on Wednesday as he held the team scoreless over five innings, with a mere two hits allowed and three strikeouts. He maintains a stellar 1.13 spring ERA and he should continue to climb up draft boards.
March 26, 2008
Brett Myers tossed five scoreless innings against the Yankees on Wednesday. He allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out three. His spring ERA is down to 1.13, and he appears ready to start the season.
March 11, 2008
Brett Myers has been performing well as he left the bullpen to re-join the Phillies' rotation, according to the Philadelphia Enquirer. He has been the only starter who has been consistently solid this spring and said this about leaving his closer's role, "I liked closing last year. That's no secret. But I like starting, too, because I'm getting the opportunity to pitch. I'm not going to be a selfish guy and whine and complain because they had to make a move. I'm not that type of guy. It's a little easier in spring training, because we're all pretty much spread out all over the place, and there's plenty of things going on. During the season, it's going to hurt a little bit, but we'll see." Myers notably won 25 games from 2005 to 2006 and was establishing himself as a strong starting pitcher before he moved to the pen.
March 5, 2008
Brett Myers worked four scoreless innings in his spring debut on Wednesday. He held the Blue Jays to three hits, walked none, and struck out one. It's good to see him stretch it out a little after spending most of 2007 in the bullpen.
February 26, 2008
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel announced Tuesday that Brett Myers will get the ball to start their season opener versus the Nationals, according to MLB.com. "Absolutely," Myers said, asked if he was shocked. "[Cole] Hamels had a great year last year. "It's going to be hard for me to take over that No. 1 one spot after he had that year, so I'm going to have to work a little bit harder to earn that spot." Sounds like Manuel's giving Myers a little gift for returning to the rotation after spending most of last season in the bullpen. Hamels will start the Phillies' second contest.
