The Tigers avoided arbitration by re-signing Brandon Inge to a one-year deal on Monday. He will be a full-time starter in 2005. He's scheduled to start at third base but could move to center field if the Tigers sign a free agent to take over the hot corner.

The Tigers started Brandon Inge at third base yesterday, and manager Alan Trammell said Inge could end up in a full-time job there next season, according to the Detroit News. "I think when the season is over, that might be a possibility," said Trammell. "Brandon is our best third baseman defensively. I don't think there's any question about it." However, Eric Munson likely will start today at third base.

Brandon Inge is eligible to come off the disabled list today, but he won't be back until at least Thursday, according to the Detroit News. Inge's broken right index finger has recovered to the point where he can swing a bat freely, but he can't throw with ease or accuracy.

"I'm not sure what's going to happen, but that's my thinking at this point," Tigers manager Alan Trammell said. "A few extra days aren't going to hurt him."

Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski indicated that he has no desire to trade Brandon Inge right now, according to the Detroit Free Press. The Mariners were reportedly turned down when they offered Gil Meche for Inge. Dombrowski refused to comment on that particular rumor, but did indicate that "a lot of clubs have expressed interest in Brandon throughout the year."

Tigers manager Alan Trammell has been pleased with the way Brandon Inge and Omar Infante have looked while taking fly balls in center field, according to the Detroit Free Press. Both are candidates for a utility role that would include backing up Alex Sanchez in center. In addition to Pudge Rodriguez, the Tigers signed Mike Difelice to a big league contract, so it may be difficult for Inge to make the team unless he can play somewhere else in addition to catcher.

Now that the Tigers have signed Ivan Rodriguez, Brandon Inge will either be a backup or play every day at Triple-A Toledo. Most likely, the Tigers will send him to the minors to try to build up some trade value.
