Scott Downs has impressed the Blue Jays with his work in the starting rotation, according to the Toronto Star. He could be a cheap fifth starter next year, which may prompt the Jays to trade Ted Lilly in the offseason.

Scott Downs will make his first start of the season Saturday against the Rangers in place of Pete Walker, according to the AP. Manager John Gibbons prefers using Walker in relief. Downs has a 5.40 ERA in 11 relief appearances with the Blue Jays this season.

The Blue Jays recalled Scott Downs from Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday. He was 2-3 with a 4.12 ERA in seven starts at Syracuse. He will pitch long relief for the Jays.
