Player Notes

Scott Downs has officially been ruled out for the remainder of the year due to his injured ankle, according to the Toronto Star.

Our View:Downs will finish the year with a career best 1.78 ERA and 1.15 WHIP as he has clearly found his groove in the setup role in Toronto. Of course, the Jays have stated that they might want to move Downs back into the rotation, so keep an eye on what role he is asked to fill as it could drastically alter his value in 2009.

Scott Downs remains day-to-day due to his ailing right ankle, according to the Toronto Star.

Our View:He hasn't thrown in almost two weeks, and fantasy owners should not be counting on the reliever to make an impact with only five games left in the season.

Downs could be shut down for the remainder of the season after aggravated his right ankle injury on Saturday, the Blue Jays' team website reports.

Our View:Downs has done an outstanding job as a setup man this season, and he could be headed for the rotation next season. This is an unfortunate way for his season to end if that is the case.
September 4, 2008
Scott Downs could be moved from his setup role back into the starting rotation next season, according to MLB.com. "We could put Downs in the rotation," Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi said. "We have that option. We're talking about it, but, obviously, we have to sit down with him and see what he's comfortable with."

Our View:The Jays could have some holes in their rotation next year, especially if A.J. Burnett opts out of his contract as appears likely, but would it really make sense to take Downs out of the bullpen where he has dominated this season (1.23 ERA, 1.06 WHIP), this after a dominating 2007 campaign (2.17 ERA)? Sometimes it's just best to leave things how they are.

Scott Downs is available to pitch again after missing nearly a week due to a sprained right ankle, the AP reports.

Our View:Downs is in the middle of his second straight excellent season. He has turned into one of the best lefty setup men in the business, not that anyone pays attention to those guys.
