Player Notes
October 4, 2009
Doug Davis earned his ninth win of the season with eight strong innings against the Cubs on Sunday. He allowed just two runs on six hits and a pair of walks while striking out five in the 5-2 win.

Our View:Davis finished off the season on a high note, but his second half overall left something to be desired. He owned a .341 mark in the first half, but a troubling 5.05 ERA after. Father time could be catching up with the veteran lefty.
September 23, 2009
Doug Davis didn't pitch well on Tuesday against the Giants, but his offense bailed him out and he earned the win. The left-hander allowed five runs on ten hits and four walks over 7.1 innings in the 10-8 victory.

Our View:Davis is now 8-13 on the season with a 4.09 ERA, but has struggled mightily since the All Star break. He held a 3.41 ERA prior to the mid-summer classic, but owns a bloated mark over 5.00 after. Looks like he hit a wall.
September 16, 2009
Doug Davis was sloppy on Wednesday, walking five batters while allowing three runs in six innings, as the Diamondbacks lost a ten-inning affair 6-5 to the Padres on the road.

Our View:Davis now has an ugly 1.48 WHIP on the season to go with his deceptive 4.01 ERA. He's not worth a draft-pick outside of NL-only formats in 2010.
September 11, 2009
Doug Davis was rocked for five earned runs on 11 hits over a mere three innings in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Brewers at Chase Field. He had no walks with two strikeouts.

Our View:Davis fell to 7-13 with a 3.99 ERA following his disastrous short outing, and is 0-3 over his last six starts.
September 5, 2009
Doug Davis gave up three earned runs on seven hits over six innings in Saturday's 4-1 loss at Colorado. He issued no walks with four strikeouts.

Our View:Davis falls to 7-12 for the season, despite a decent 3.81 ERA. He is winless over his last five starts.
August 26, 2009
Doug Davis unraveled late on Wednesday, allowing two eighth inning runs, as the Giants rallied for a 4-3 at home.

Our View:So this is why they never let Davis go longer than six or seven innings. If you've had him all year, you know what to expect down the stretch: a lot of walks, decent ERA, high WHIP and few wins.
August 20, 2009
Doug Davis allowed nine baserunners, and five runs, in five innings on Thursday, helping Arizona get blown out 12-3 in Philadelphia.

Our View:Davis walked four and threw 109 pitches in just five innings. Despite having a 3.77 ERA, his 1.46 WHIP makes him a fringe option in most mixed leagues.
August 15, 2009
Doug Davis gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits over six innings in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Dodgers at Chase Field. He had four walks and two strikeouts.

Our View:The Dodgers were leading 3-1 when Davis exited, so he ends the night with a no-decision instead of a win. He is 3-0 over his last five starts, and is worth employing in NL-only leagues for his next turn in Arizona's rotation.
August 14, 2009
The Arizona Republic reports that the 48-hour deadline for the Diamondbacks and Brewers to agree on a deal for left-hander Doug Davis has passed.

Our View:Davis will remain a D-Back for at least the rest of the 2009 season. Neither club reported on why a deal could not be reached, but it looks like the Brewers won't get the rotation help they were looking for to make a late push. They are hanging on by a thread in the NL Central.
August 14, 2009
According to the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks offered lefty Doug Davis a one-year contract extension.

Our View:So much for Davis heading to the Brewers. That deal looks to be all but dead (deadline is Friday at noon) and the D-Backs are now interested in retaining his services. Davis balked at the extension, saying he wants to test free agency, but if Arizona eventually offers a multi-year deal, he could be interested. Regardless, it looks like he's staying put this season.
August 13, 2009
According to Brewers' beat writer Tom Haudricourt, it doesn't look like the team will be acquiring Diamondbacks' starter Doug Davis. Brewers' GM Doug Melvin told Haudricourt that there have been no talks between the two teams.

Our View:The Brewers are interested, but they might have realized that they are awfully close to being out of contention. If they could get Davis for cheap they would pull the trigger, but they may not want to invest if they don't believe they can make the playoffs this season.
August 12, 2009
Brewers beat writer Tom Haudricourt doesn't think the Brewers are likely to pry Doug Davis from the Diamondbacks.

Our View:He believes Arizona is "still" asking for too much in return, and with the Brews season nearing the "lost" point, they probably aren't going to give up anything too much in return.
August 12, 2009
Updating an earlier report, Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman confirms that the Milwaukee Brewers are Doug Davis' claiming team.

Our View:The Brewers are desperate for pitching help, and will likely get a deal for Davis done. Stay tuned for updates.
August 12, 2009
Doug Davis has been claimed off waivers by an unknown team, according to Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman.

Our View:The Brewers, starved for starting pitching and a former team of Davis', are the best bet to have placed the claim. The formerly mustachioed lefty is 7-10 with a 3.62 ERA in 144.1 innings pitched in 2009.
August 11, 2009
ESPN.com's Buster Olney is reporting that Diamondbacks' pitcher Doug Davis is currently on waivers. Davis could be a very appealing option for contenders looking for help in the rotation.

Our View:Davis has allowed two or less runs in each of his last four starts, making him even more appealing to those teams looking for a starter. Davis projects as a back-of-the-rotation kind of pitcher on a good team, so the asking price could determine whether he gets moved or not.
August 10, 2009
Doug Davis only allowed two earned runs on four hits over seven innings in Monday's 7-4 win over the Mets at Chase Field. He had three walks and two strikeouts. He also helped his own cause by going 1-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBI.

Our View:Davis earned his seventh win, and continues to pitch well as he allowed two or less earned runs in each of his last four starts. He is worth employing in fantasy lineups for his next turn in Arizona's rotation.
August 5, 2009
Doug Davis picked up his sixth win of the season on Wednesday, as the Diamondbacks beat the Pirates 4-3 in Pittsburgh.

Our View:Those six wins come with his ten losses. Davis has a 3.67 ERA, but walks a ton of batters and has been far from dominant in '09.
July 31, 2009
Doug Davis issued two earned runs on four hits over six innings in Friday's 3-2 win at the Mets. He had six walks with three strikeouts, and gave up two homers.

Our View:The game was tied at 2-2 when Davis exited, so the veteran hurler takes a no-decision rather than a win. He allowed 23 walks over six starts in July, and really needs to work on his control heading into the new month.
July 27, 2009
Interest in Diamondbacks starting pitchers Doug Davis and Jon Garland has been "light" so far, according to FoxSports.com.

Our View:Davis has had a sub-4.00 ERA for almost all of 2009, but puts a lot of runners on base, as evidenced by his relatively ugly 1.49 WHIP. Garland, meanwhile, offers few guarantees beyond going deep into games and not striking out many batters. Expect both to get plenty of play this week, though, as the contenders get serious and more desperate.
July 26, 2009
The Boston Globe is reporting that the Brewers may still be interested in Diamondbacks' starter Doug Davis. Many thought the Brewers were going to land Davis as another piece in the Felipe Lopez deal, but Arzona GM Josh Byrnes told the Brewers he wanted to hold on to Davis for now.

Our View:Byrnes told the Brewers that he was still trying to win, but it looks like the D-Backs are a lost cause at this point. Milwaukee has been the frontrunners for Davis for the last few months, and if he does get moved it looks like Milwaukee will be his new home. We will keep you posted on any news regarding Davis as the deadline approaches.
July 25, 2009
Doug Davis blanked the Pirates for six innings on Saturday by scattering five hits and three walks. He fanned eight and was rewarded with his fifth win.

Our View:Davis is just 5-10 on the season, but he's pitched much better than his record indicates. He has a 3.76 ERA and his outing on Saturday couldn't have come at a better time. He's been dangled as trade bait and the D-Backs could fetch a tastier return as a result of it.
July 20, 2009
Doug Davis was lit up for eight earned runs on six hits over a mere 2.1 innings of work in Monday's 10-6 loss at Colorado. He had four walks and one strikeout.

Our View:Davis falls to 4-10 following his disastrous outing. He has given up 13 earned runs over his last two starts, and is only an option in deeper fantasy leagues for his next turn in Arizona's rotation.
July 12, 2009
Doug Davis got knocked around on Sunday by the Marlins. He allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks over just four innings. He took the loss as Arizona was embarrassed 8-1.

Our View:Davis has been much better than his 4-9 record indicates this season. Even after Sunday's shellacking his ERA still stands at a respectable 3.41. He also fanned seven in his four innings of work. He'll likely be a hot commodity once the July 31st trade deadline rolls around.
July 8, 2009
The Diamondbacks want at least the "equivalent of a supplemental draft pick" in return for Doug Davis, according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

Our View:Davis might not seem worthy of that kind of haul, but that's what the D-Backs are due for anyway if they offer him arbitration and he declines and signs with another team. The team could still shift gears and offer him a contract extension, but odds are a team will get desperate in this pitching thin market and give them what they want in return for veteran lefty.
July 7, 2009
Doug Davis picked up his first win since June 5 on Tuesday, as the Diamondbacks prevailed over the Padres 4-3 in Phoenix.

Our View:Davis has pitched well during that stretch, but hasn't gone very deep into games and received little run support. He has a nice 3.13 ERA, but his 1.40 WHIP indicates that number will probably go up at some point.
July 3, 2009
The Arizona Republic is reporting that the Diamondbacks have several players who may be on the trade market. Pitchers Doug Davis, Jon Garland, and Chad Qualls join position players Felipe Lopez and Chad Tracy as possible trade candidates.

Our View:The D-Backs are going nowhere fast this season, and they would like to bolster their minor league system in the process. Don't be shocked if all of the players listed are moved, as there seems to be a market for each one. Fantasy values will depend on the final destination of each player.
July 2, 2009
Doug Davis allowed just one run on seven hits and four walks over seven innings, but was denied the victory due to a blown save by Chad Qualls. The D-Backs eventually fell to the Reds in ten innings.

Our View:Davis pitched well, but the four walks are disheartening and he allowed 11 men to reach base in his seven innings of work. He pitched his way out of jams, but a high WHIP spells nothing but trouble for a pitcher. Still, with a 3.15 ERA he deserves better than his 3-8 record.
June 29, 2009
Doug Davis is likely being discussed in a potential deal with the Brewers, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View:Davis is pushing the Diamondbacks into a real life "sell high," situation, and the team would likely be well-served to do it soon before the 33-year-old lefty throws another clunker. Davis has been serviceable in 2009 despite winning only three games. In 98.2 innings pitched, he has a 3.28 ERA. Expect that number to rise, though.
June 27, 2009
Doug Davis was great for Arizona in a pitcher's duel against John Lackey and the Angels on Saturday, giving up zero earned runs (one earned), five hits and three walks while striking out eight in a no decision.

Our View:Davis' stat line was identical to that of Lackey's, aside from one less strikeout. Davis dropped his 2009 ERA down to 3.28, although there's reason to think he won't be able to keep that number so low given his relative lack of control; he'll close out the month of June having walked no fewer than three batters in any of his five starts this month, as well as seven of his past eight.
June 24, 2009
Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman says a return to Milwaukee for Diamondbacks pitcher Doug Davis "makes sense."

Our View:If Heyman is saying such a move makes sense, it probably means he's heard the Brewers are considering it. Davis has pitched well in 2009, posting a 3.53 ERA in 91.1 innings, but has only three wins and is among the NL league leaders in losses, with eight. A change of scenery, and more run support from the Brewers, could serve the veteran lefty well. Keep a close eye on this if you are a Davis owner.
June 21, 2009
Doug Davis pitched well in Sunday's 3-2 loss at Seattle, as only issued one earned run on seven hits over seven innings. He had five walks and three strikeouts.

Our View:It was a strong outing for Davis other than the five free passes, and it is a shame he was forced to take a no-decision rather than a win due to a lack of offensive support from his teammates. He is winless over his last three starts and is 3-8 for the season, despite a decent 3.53 ERA.
June 17, 2009
MLB.com indicates that the Diamondbacks may try to trade left-hander Doug Davis before his contract expires at the end of the season. Arizona currently holds the second-worst record in the league.

Our View:Despite a 3.72 ERA, Davis is just 3-8 on the season. His value would obviously be higher were he to pitch for a winning club.
June 16, 2009
Doug Davis took a loss for the second straight start as the Diamondbacks got shut out 5-0 by the Royals and Gil Meche Tuesday night.

Our View:Davis has exceeded expectations in 2009, keeping a sub-4.00 ERA since April 18, but still isn't a super great fantasy option because of his inability to earn wins and his propensity for walks.
June 15, 2009
The Arizona Republic reports that while the Diamondbacks may consider dealing players like Doug Davis or Felipe Lopez, they are unlikely to.

Our View:It is looking less and less likely that the D-Backs will contend in '09, but they apparently don't think they could get equal value in return for most of their players with the lukewarm economy. Davis has been surprisingly effective this season, going 3-7 with a 3.65 ERA.
June 6, 2009
Doug Davis only allowed three hits over six scoreless innings in Friday's 8-0 win at San Diego. He issued four walks with five strikeouts.

Our View:Davis snapped a six-game skid without earning a win. He has allowed two or less earned runs in each of his last three starts.
May 30, 2009
Doug Davis allowed two earned runs on seven hits over seven innings in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Braves at Chase Field. He allowed two walks and fired six strikeouts.

Our View:This was a solid outing for Davis, but he was dealt a no-decision as he exited the game tied 2-2. He did not earn any wins over six starts in May, and only has two wins for the season.
May 25, 2009
Doug Davis allowed four runs, two earned, over 7.1 innings of work in Monday's 9-7 loss to the Padres. He scattered five hits and four walks while striking out six.

Our View:Davis managed to avoid his seventh loss of the season, but he pitched well enough to get the win. The 33-year-old holds a 3.77 ERA, but he has not been a very strong pitcher in 2009. His fantasy value would be boosted if his offense could provide him with more consistent run support.
May 20, 2009
Doug Davis got knocked around by the Marlins on Wednesday as the Diamondbacks dropped game one of the doubleheader 8-6. Davis went 4.1 innings and allowed six runs on six hits while walking five and striking out four.

Our View:Davis has been pretty good this season, but he wasn't today. He struggled with his control, and it cost him. Owners should be confident that this is just one bad start and not a trend.
May 15, 2009
Doug Davis pitched well again on Friday, but once again his team could not deliver him a win. Davis went six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out three.

Our View:If Davis didn't have bad luck, he would have no luck at all this season. His record is at 2-5, but he has a 3.22 ERA. He is getting the job done, but his team isn't. He still has good fantasy value, and owners just need to hope his luck changes sooner rather than later.
May 10, 2009
Doug Davis continued his fine, but unlucky season on Saturday. He allowed just one run on four hits and two walks over six innings, but took the loss as Arizona fell to the Nationals 2-1.

Our View:Davis is now 2-5 with a 3.25 ERA. That doesn't seem right. He's just not getting any run support as the young hitters in the desert can't get it going. Regardless, Davis has emerged as a solid fantasy option. Looks like the crafty old lefty has plenty left in the tank. As most crafty lefties usually do.
April 29, 2009
Doug Davis tossed seven shutout innings as the Diamondbacks defeated the Cubs 10-0 on Wednesday afternoon. He allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out seven.

Our View:Davis entered the game 0-3 with a 5.21 ERA at home this season, but he had his stuff working in Arizona today. He is now 2-3 through five starts, but he owns a 2.91 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Davis is borderline fantasy worthy depending on the type of league you are in.
April 24, 2009
Doug Davis struggled a bit on Friday, going six innings and allowing five ruuns on nine hits while walking one and striking out five. Davis falls to 1-3 on the year.

Our View:Davis has been better than his 1-3 record would indicate, but he wasn't good tonight. The Giants put five on him, and they are not the best offensive team in the league. Still, Davis has proven he can be an option in NL-only leagues, and he could be an option as a fill in in deep mixed leagues.
April 18, 2009
Doug Davis turned out his second solid start in a row on Saturday and finally earned his first victory of the season. In the D-Backs 2-0 win over the Giants he tossed eight scoreless innings, allowing just eight hits and a walk. The crafty lefty struck out six on the day.

Our View:Davis appears to be reinventing himself this season. He now has allowed just two runs in his last 16 innings and lowered his ERA to a very respectable 2.57. Maybe he feels like he needs to pick up the slack with Brandon Webb on the DL. Whatever it is, it's working.
April 13, 2009
Doug Davis delivered eight solid innings of work but the Diamondbacks fell 2-1 to St. Louis on Monday. The veteran allowed two solo home runs among seven hits while striking out five.

Our View:It was a tough luck loss for Davis, but he needs to start keeping the ball in the yard. He has allowed three home runs in 13 innings of work to start the season, and he has little if any fantasy potential.
April 8, 2009
Doug Davis allowed four runs in five innings of work in Wednesday's 9-2 loss to the Rockies. The veteran walked four batters and gave up four hits, including a home run, while striking out four.

Our View:Davis was pretty mediocre when healthy last season, and his age is working against him. He will have to develop a crafty repertoire if he hopes to perform well throughout the course of the entire season.
March 29, 2009
Doug Davis pitched four and two-thirds innings Sunday against the White Sox, allowing three runs on seven hits.

Our View:Davis' ERA this spring is a gaudy 6.23. He admitted to having absolutely no command of his fastball, which does not bode well for a guy who has to compensate for low velocity with pinpoint control.
March 24, 2009
Doug Davis did not have a particularly sharp outing against the Giants on Tuesday, but he is not concerned. "I felt great," he tells MLB.com. Davis previously missed two spring starts due to left triceps irritation. He will continue to increase his pitch count and plans to be ready for the start of the regular season.

Our View:Davis might be a little limited on his pitch count early in the 2009 season, but fantasy owners should take Tuesday's news as a good sign that he'll be ready come early April.
March 16, 2009
Doug Davis, who has been dealing with left-biceps irritation, threw a successful bullpen session, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View:Davis is slated to return to the rotation Wednesday against the Brewers, and will work 2-3 innings, or throw around 40 pitches.
March 9, 2009
Doug Davis is expected to test his arm today, according to the Arizona Republic. He was scratched from his last start due to left-biceps irritation.

Our View:Davis will play catch, and should be cleared to make a start this week if he does not experience irritation. Skipper Bob Melvin is not concerned, but admitted that he will be if Davis has trouble today.
March 8, 2009
Doug Davis has been scratched from today's start due to left-biceps irritation, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View:Skipper Bob Melvin does not believe the ailment is related to the nerve issues that bothered Davis prior to his start in Scottsdale on Tuesday. Davis should only be considered for deeper NL-only leagues, especially since he will likely have a high WHIP.
March 3, 2009
Doug Davis, who, according to MLB.com, announced that he's been pitching with nerve trouble in his arm for the past five seasons, pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout against San Francisco on Tuesday.

Our View:It was good to see Davis back in command after get lit up in his previous exhibition outing. Davis will look to man up the No. 4 spot in Arizona's rotation, at least to begin the season, allowing the team to bump prospect Max Scherzer down to No. 5 and limit his starts a bit.
