Player Notes
July 5, 2008
Doug Davis held the Padres 2-9 hitters to four hits and no runs through eight innings, but unfortunately for him, Padres leadoff hitter Scott Hairston hit two home runs leading to three RBI to saddle Davis with his fourth loss.

Our View:Too bad for Davis the lineup includes nine players as he was otherwise pretty masterful when not facing Hairston. This was his fifth straight game of three or fewer earned runs, it's just too bad the D'backs offense has dried up of late leading to just one win in that time.

Arizona LHP Doug Davis put a good effort on the mound this evening, but his Diamondbacks fell just short, taking the 5-4 loss versus Boston. Davis lasted seven innings, surrendering three runs (all earned) on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Our View:Davis walked with no decision as the relief pitching failed to keep Boston at bay, giving Davis his fourth no-decision finish in five starts this month.
June 19, 2008
Doug Davis allowed one run on three hits, walked two and struck out eight in Thursday's no decision versus the Athletics.

Our View:Davis had arguably his best start of the season but didn't get the run support to earn a win. The performance lowered the lefty's 3.99 ERA to 3.65 and helped his horrific 1.72 WHIP. Davis has now struck out 38 in 44.1 innings.
June 8, 2008
Arizona LHP Doug Davis struggled through a rough day on the mound as the Diamondbacks suffered the 6-4 loss to Pittsburgh. Davis last just 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on seven hits with four walks and no strikeouts.

Our View:Davis has seen limited action and now carries two losses in his last three starts, giving up 12 earned runs through that stretch.

Doug Davis put together an inspiring performance Friday. In his first outing since undergoing surgery for thyroid cancer, Davis held the Braves to one run on five hits and two walks while striking out four over seven innings. He picked up his second win in three starts and now boasts a 2.70 ERA.

Our View:It was really great to see Davis pitch well Friday, but don't let this nice story cloud your judgment on him. He's at best a borderline starter in mixed formats.
May 22, 2008
Doug Davis has overcome all the off-field issues surrounding his thyroid cancer and as a result he will return to the starting rotation to face the Braves this weekend, according to Fox Sports. Brandon Medders was designated for assignment to open up a roster spot.

Our View:Davis made two starts at Triple-A to help build back up his stamina, and whether or not he is successful this weekend we are all in his corner. Don't get all sappy though and add him to your roster because it's a good story as his effectiveness certainly isn't what it used to be.

Arizona LHP Doug Davis is all set to return to the rotation and will do so on Friday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Arizona manager Bob Melvin addressed the media and announced Davis will be back with the team on Friday, making his official return from surgery to remove a cancerous thyroid gland performed on April 10th. He has been declared to be fully free of cancer and has completed to rehab starts in Triple-A Tucson. While the news is positive, Melvin has yet to address how the Diamondbacks will make room on the roster for Davis, sure to be a difficult choice. Max Scherzer, a former first-round draft pick, has pitched well during his time in the majors after getting the opportunity when Davis went down. It will be difficult for Arizona to send him down to the minors, so the team may seek alternative methods to free up space. We will update as news becomes available.
May 19, 2008
The Diamondbacks have a decision to make with Max Scherzer, according to the Arizona Republic, and it could be a difficult one with six solid starters available upon his return. Scherzer, the former first-round pick who features a sizzling fastball, has made three starts in the rotation as a fill-in for left-hander Doug Davis . And he's looked very, very good. Scherzer could get sent back to Tucson. Melvin might also hold off on activating Davis and let Scherzer keep pitching in the starting rotation. But Melvin isn't ready to show his cards. "I'm just not going there," he said. "We'll figure it out once Doug comes back."

Our View:Davis seems all but set to return from a rehab assignment at Triple-A Tucson in his comeback from thyroid cancer surgery. He picked up a win Sunday for the Sidewinders.
May 11, 2008
Doug Davis made his first minor league rehab start on Saturday. He allowed six hits and two runs over 4.2 innings at Triple-A Tucson. Davis is expected to make one more start before moving back to the majors, the Arizona Republic reports.

Our View:Barring an injury to another starter, Davis will likely replace Max Scherzer in the rotation. We assume the club may also choose to use this opportunity to skip Randy Johnson and let the Big Unit rest his back. We'll let you know when they make a decision.
May 8, 2008
Doug Davis had a CT scan on Thursday that showed the his thyroid cancer has not spread and that his surgery was a success, according to MLB.com. "The cancer did not spread and it will not spread from here on out," Davis said.

Our View:Apparently Davis also hasn't been effected by the lethargy that often hits cancer patients who take the medicine he is on. At this point, it appears that Davis is well on his way to returning to the D'backs rotation in a matter of weeks.
May 6, 2008
Doug Davis threw a simulated game on Monday, according to the East Valley Tribune. Davis was pleased with his command in a 65-pitch simulated game, which came 25 days after his cancerous thyroid was removed and a week after a radiation iodine treatment kept him isolated for three days. Jeff Salazar said, "He looked real good, just as good as every other big leaguer we've been facing. He buckled me one time on a breaking ball. Strike three." Manager Bob Melvin also commented that his endurance was better than expected.

Our View:Davis expects to make a rehab start at Triple-A Tucson on Saturday, and the Diamondbacks are planning for him to make one more start before returning from the DL, a move that could potentially push rookie phenom Max Scherzer to the bullpen. Davis is taking aim at a return to the team during the May 16-18 home series against Detroit.
May 4, 2008
Doug Davis is making good progress in his recovery from thyroid cancer surgery, according to the Arizona Republic. Davis began taking radioactive iodine pills Tuesday and was quarantined at home the past three days. He noted he had to stay at least three feet away from people. He was expecting the treatment to leave him drained of energy, but he was pleasantly surprised by how he has felt, and he said, "I expected the worst, and I was very fortunate not to get sick, not to feel any fatigue, nothing. I don't know why. I'm fortunate, I guess." Davis originally hoped to be back with the Diamondbacks by next weekend but said that's no longer realistic. He is planning to make his first rehab start Monday in extended spring training or Tuesday for Triple-A Tucson. He hopes he can be back after two rehab starts.

Our View:Davis is now taking aim at a return to the Diamondbacks during the May 16-18 home series against Detroit.
April 11, 2008
The team stated that Doug Davis' thyroid cancer surgery was a success, according to the East Valley Tribune. That is good news, but no other details were released as of yet.
April 9, 2008
As expected, Doug Davis has been placed on the 15-day DL, according to the Sports Network. He is going to have thyroid cancer surgery, and could potentially return in as little as 4-6 weeks following the procedure.
April 9, 2008
Doug Davis has won his first game of the season on Tuesday before he undergoes cancer surgery on Thursday, according to BaseballMusings.com. Davis only allowed two runs on six hits over six innings, with seven strikeouts and two walks, in a 10-5 win over the Dodgers. It was a heroic performance, and his recovery and rehab time following this week's surgery is at least four to six weeks, likely even longer according to manager Bob Melvin, who stated, "We'll see. That's a tough one for me. I know he's kind of committed to that and doctors have told him that. I think that's his timetable in his head, but we'll take it how we think he's progressing at the time. It could be more." It was a good night for him, and hopefully he can make a favorable recovery.
April 3, 2008
Doug Davis was dealt his first loss of the season on Thursday, as he allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits over 3.2 innings of work against Cincinnati, with six walks and four strikeouts. Davis is notably dealing with thyroid cancer, and it is undetermined how many starts he will make before undergoing surgery.
March 28, 2008
Doug Davis has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, according to the team's official site. The lefty is expected to make his scheduled exhibition start Friday and will probably make a couple regular season starts before undergoing surgery. Details are sketchy at the moment, but we'll update you on Davis' status when more is known.

Doug Davis, who started for Arizona on Sunday vs. Milwaukee, struggled early on with his command. The Brewers got two hits and two walks in the first inning, but Davis escaped the jam with only one run, an RBI single by Prince Fielder. Davis worked four innings, allowing six hits, three walks and two runs. The left-hander has been quiet this spring, but is scheduled to be the teams' fourth starter behind Brandon Webb, Dan Haren and Randy Johnson.
