Player Notes
August 30, 2008
Vicente Padilla has been placed on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring, according to the AP. To fill his spot on the roster, Texas recalled righthander Kameron Loe from Triple-A Oklahoma.

Our View:The 30-year-old hurler has gone 12-7 with a 4.98 ERA in 25 starts for the Rangers, and this will mark his second trip to the DL this season.
August 28, 2008
Vicente Padilla will miss Friday's scheduled start due to pain in a joint near his neck, according to the Star-Telegram.

Our View:Dustin Nipper will make his second start of the season Friday in place of Padilla. He couldn't throw a pen session Wednesday, but the team is not planning on placing him on the DL, and are hopeful he can return for his start next week against Seattle.
August 27, 2008
Vicente Padilla is still struggling with neck pain and may miss his scheduled start for the Rangers on Friday, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Our View:Padilla was unable to throw his side session on Tuesday, but if he can complete his session Wednesday, he will likely still get the start.
August 24, 2008
Vicente Padilla only pitched five innings, but it was a good five innings, as he surrendered three runs but struck out eight batters, ultimately getting a no-decision in Texas' 4-3 loss to Cleveland.

Our View:Padilla has not been good in August, and he has not won a game since July 25. Fantasy owners can likely do better in their rotations.
August 24, 2008
Texas RHP Vicente Padilla tries to snap a four-start skid when the Rangers and the Cleveland Indians close out a three-game weekend series tonight at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View:The 30-year-old Texas right-hander, who won two straight starts in late July to improve to 12-5 this season, has since gone 0-2 with a pair of no-decisions and seen his earned run average rise from 4.56 to 4.96. His July 25 defeat of Oakland earned him win No. 12 and doubled his total from an injury-plagued 2007, when he was 6-10 in 23 starts with a 5.76 ERA in 120 1/3 innings. Padilla is 2-2 in five lifetime starts against the Indians with a 7.09 ERA in 26 2/3 innings.
August 16, 2008
Vicente Padilla will miss his scheduled start on Sunda due to an inflamed muscle joint in his neck, the AP reports. Dustin Nippert will take his place against the Rays. Padilla is tentatively rescheduled to work on Tuesday against the Tigers.

Our View:Padilla has been a pain in the neck for fantasy teams since his solid work in April and May. We wouldn't count on him next week.
August 13, 2008
The Rangers have announced their plans for the pitching rotation, a group under stress due to injury, for the coming days, according to the Dallas Morning News. The Rangers will send Tommy Hunter to the mound tomorrow, followed by Kevin Millwood on Friday, Matt Harrison on Saturday, and with a bit of surprise, Vicente Padilla on Sunday.

Our View:Padilla underwent an MRI exam on Monday and received a cortisone injection in attempt to ease discomfort in his neck. This schedule gives him a bit of rest, but we will see if he is truly ready for action on Sunday. We'll continue to track the situation moving forward.
August 12, 2008
Vicente Padilla spent the off day Monday in Arlington having an MRI and taking a cortisone injection for a bothersome joint near his neck that forced him to the disabled list last month, according to the Ft. Worth Star Telegram.

Our View:His status for his next scheduled start Thursday remains in question. Tommy Hunter would be the starter in the series finale against Boston if Padilla can't go. We'll keep you posted.
August 5, 2008
Vicente Padilla has returned to Nicaragua to attend a family matter, but he will return in time for his Saturday start against the Orioles, MLB.com reports.

Our View:The flight time shouldn't bother Padilla too much, but we wonder if divided attention is the reason his ERA has ballooned over the past six starts.
August 4, 2008
Rangers pitcher Vicente Padilla gave up four earned runs in six innings while striking out five in Texas' win over the Yankees.

Our View:Padilla was not great in July, and this is not a very good start for August. He's still a decent fantasy option, but watch our for his rising ERA.
August 2, 2008
The Texas Rangers fired pitching coach Mark Connor and bullpen coach Dom Chiti, according to the AP. Triple-A pitching coach Andy Hawkins will take over the same role in the big leagues, and Jim Colborn will become the team's bullpen coach.

Our View:The Rangers have the worst ERA in all of baseball, and the worst in the AL by more than half a run. Texas is the only team in baseball whose bullpen and starters have an ERA over 5.00. This change certainly can't hurt.
July 30, 2008
Texas RHP Vicente Padilla found another strong outing off the mound this evening, going seven innings to allow three runs (all earned0 on 10 hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View:It was just his fourth start this month, going 2-1 through July with a no-decision this evening. There have been more runs allowed over recent weeks than at the start, leaving us to ponder if he will fall of the pace coming down the stretch.
July 25, 2008
The Texas Rangers are open to trading pitcher Vicente Padilla, despite the fact he leads the team in wins, according to ESPN.com.

Our View:The 30-year-old Padilla is making $11 million this season, so the Rangers would happily move him if they can get a younger, cheaper hurler in return.
July 20, 2008
The Rangers failed to enjoy much success at the plate today, leaving RHP Vicente Padilla to earn the 1-0 victory almost entirely with his pitching arm. Padilla went seven innings, allowing no runs on three hits with two walks and no strikeouts.

Our View:Padilla coerced 12 ground-outs on the day and threw just 80 pitches, getting his 11th win to move to 11-5 with an ERA of 4.41.
July 20, 2008
Vicente Padilla has recovered from his strained neck muscle and has been activated from the DL, according to the Sports Network. The team optioned infielder German Duran to Triple-A Oklahoma to make room on the roster.

Our View:Padilla is slated to start Sunday's game against the Twins. Padilla holds a less than impressive 4.70 ERA and 1.45 WHIP this season, but maintains a 10-5 record. He should remain a favorable option in AL-only leagues.
July 13, 2008
Vicente Padilla will throw a bullpen session in Nicaragua on Monday, and then another in Minnesota on Thursday, and if all goes well, he will start next Sunday against the Twins, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View:Padilla has had a decent but not spectacular year, and his results for fantasy play have been mixed. His 10 wins are great, but that 4.70 ERA and 1.45 WHIP are not. Keep an eye on his injury status before putting him back in your lineup.
July 8, 2008
Vicente Padilla, who is battling a bruised right thumb and neck strain, has been scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Our View:Dustin Nippert was an option to take his place, but not now as he threw 103 pitches in long relief on Monday.
July 6, 2008
Vicente Padilla, who is nursing a sore shoulder and bruised thumb, won't throw until tomorrow back in Arlington, according to the Dallas Morning News. The team was previously hopeful he would be able to throw a bullpen session today.

Our View:His status for his next scheduled start on Wednesday remains in question.
July 6, 2008
Vicente Padilla's sore right shoulder was still bothering him on Saturday, according to the Star Telegram.

Our View:The Rangers are hopeful Padilla can throw a bullpen session Sunday and make his next scheduled start against the Angels on Wednesday. He is also nursing a bruised right thumb, and if he cannot take the hill for his next start, Matt Harrison of Triple-A Oklahoma is said to be a candidate for the spot.
July 5, 2008
Vicente Padilla suffered a neck strain in addition to his bruised right thumb on Friday night, the Dallas Morning News reports. He is questionable for his next scheduled start.

Our View:We assume the sore neck comes from watching opposing batters knock his pitches around all the field. Padilla has been awful his last two starts and maybe a skipped turn wouldn't be such a bad thing.
July 4, 2008
Vicente Padilla has sustained a bruised right thumb, which forced him to leave Friday's game against the Orioles in the third inning, according to the AP. He was struck in the hand by a hard single from Freddie Bynum.

Our View:His X-rays came back negative, but his status for his next start on Wedneday is to be determined.
July 4, 2008
Vicente Padilla was forced out of action tonight due to an apparent leg injury, after allowing eight earned runs over 2.2 innings against the Orioles.

Our View:We will keep you posted when more details regarding his injury are revealed.
June 28, 2008
Vicente Padilla allowed seven runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out three on Saturday night in an 8-6 loss to his former team, the Philadelphia Phillies.

Our View:The right-hander was 8-1 his previous 11 starts and had won three in a row.
June 28, 2008
One of the hottest hands in the league, RHP Vicente Padilla , looks to keep his Texas Rangers in the win column today as they host the Philadelphia Phillies, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:Padilla spent a good part of his career in Philadelphia, and from 2002 to 2005 the right-hander was a part of the team's rotation, racking up a 44-42 ledger. Padilla has been a force for the Rangers this season, going 10-3 with an ERA of 3.74, including a record of 7-1 over his past 10 starts.
June 22, 2008
Vicente Padilla did just enough to give his team's offense a chance to shine on Sunday and the result was his 10th victory of the season. Padilla held the Nationals to three runs over seven innings and left the outing with a 3.74 ERA.

Our View:Padilla hasn't been dominating in many of his outings this year, but he has also kept the Rangers in almost every game in which he has taken the hill. Expecting 20 wins is a stretch, but if he continues to pitch like this he will be a fine no.4 starter in mixed leagues.
June 22, 2008
The Rangers are hoping RHP Vicente Padilla can keep his hot hand going as Texas welcomes the Washington Nationals, countering with LHP John Lannan, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:Padilla enters off consecutive wins including a 7-5 victory over Atlanta, holding the Braves to two runs (one earned) on two hits over six innings. He is now 7-1 with a 3.16 ERA over his last 10 starts. He has faced the Nationals 14 times over his career, going 3-4 with a 3.99 ERA. On the other hand, Lannan has allowed just two earned runs in each of his past four starts, but has nothing to show for it. He has dropped three straight starts and four decisions overall, receiving no more than two runs of support in any of his last six appearances.
June 17, 2008
Texas RHP Vicente Padilla continues to enjoy a strong '08 campaign, tonight pushing his Rangers to a 7-5 win over Atlanta. Padilla pitched six innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Our View:This brings Padilla to a record of 8-1 over his last 11 starts.
June 6, 2008
The Rangers reinstated Vicente Padilla from bereavement leave Friday. He will start tonight against the Rays.

Our View:Aside from his ugly WHIP (1.45), Padilla has been a nice fantasy performer this season, with a 7-2 record, 3.67 ERA and 54 Ks.
June 4, 2008
The Rangers expect Vicente Padilla back from his bereavement leave tomorrow, and he will make a start Friday, notes the Star-Telegram. Scott Feldman will pitch Saturday and Doug Mathis Sunday.

Our View:The Rangers had said Padilla needed to throw a bullpen before starting, but he did that while in Nicaragua on his bereavement leave.
June 2, 2008
Vicente Padilla will miss his scheduled start on Tuesday. The Rangers placed him on the bereavement list on Monday, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. A.J. Murray will start in his place. Padilla is tending to a family emergency in Nicaragua but could be back by this weekend.

Our View:Fantasy owners should bench Padilla until we know when he'll be back. We obviously wish him and his family the best.
June 1, 2008
Vicente Padilla is on his way to Nicaragua to attend a family matter, the Dallas Morning News reports. His scheduled start has been pushed from Monday to Tuesday. If he can't return in time, A.J. Murray would be called up.

Our View:We hope everything is okay with Padilla and his family. We'll continue to provide updates as more details emerge.
May 27, 2008
Vicente Padilla is 4-0 with a 2.09 ERA over his last six starts and will look to remain hot tonight when he battles the Rays in Tampa Bay, according to MLB.com. The Rays could cool him off though, as he is 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA in his three career starts against them, which is his highest ERA against any Major League team.

Our View:He is 6-2 overall with a 3.33 ERA and passable 1.42 WHIP, and should be in your lineups while he is hot, but just be warned that he could be a letdown tonight, going by his track record against the Rays.
May 22, 2008
Vicente Padilla allowed three runs over five innings on Thursday in a no-decision against the Twins.

Our View:Padilla was far from sharp today as he allowed seven hits and two walks, though this was his sixth straight start of at least five innings with three or fewer runs allowed. No reason to not keep rolling him out there in mixed leagues with production like that.
May 17, 2008
Vicente Padilla matched his victory total from last season by winning his fourth consecutive decision over five starts and his sixth of the year as the Rangers wore out the Rangers for the second consecutive game. The right-hander allowed two runs and five hits over seven innings.

Our View:Padilla struggled early but the Astros were not able to get the big hit.
May 12, 2008
Vicente Padilla allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked one and struck out two in a 13-12 win over the Seattle Mariners. Padilla was gone long before the game finally came to fruition and while he wasn't very good on Monday night, he was better than his counter part, Erik Bedard.

Our View:Padilla came into Monday night's game allowing zero earned runs in two of his last three starts, one against the Mariners.
May 8, 2008
Vicente Padilla was masterful on Wednesday night as he held the Mariners to two hits, two walks and no runs over seven innings. He also picked up eight K on the night to improve his record to 5-2.

Our View:Don't look now, but Padilla has allowed zero earned runs in two of his last three starts and has a 0.41 ERA over his last 21.2 IP. If he's on waivers you might as well grab him at the moment cause he certainly possesses the stuff to go on an extended run of success.
April 27, 2008
Vicente Padilla, who was hit hard in his Tuesday outing against the Tigers, pitched a seven-hitter for his third career shutout in a 10-0 win over the Twins.

Our View:Padilla struck out two, walked two and didn't allow a runner past second in his first shutout for Texas and his third win of the season.
April 22, 2008
The Tigers ripped Vicente Padilla on Tuesday night to the tune of eight hits and seven runs over three innings. Padilla allowed three doubles, one triple, and three homers.

Our View:On the positive side, Vicente served up only one single. Padilla had been pitching decently, but outings like this can happen when a lineup like the Tigers gets rolling.
April 22, 2008
Vicente Padilla is set to take the hill against the Tigers tonight, a team that he has a good track record against, according to MLB.com. He is currently 2-1 with a 3.12 ERA, and is 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA over four career starts against the Tigers.

Our View:He will duel with Justin Verlander, who is 0-3 with a 7.03 ERA. Padilla is off to a solid start and looks to have another good outing tonight, meaning he should be penciled into your fantasy rotation.
April 17, 2008
Vicente Padilla pitched seven strong innings helping the Rangers send Toronto to it's fifth straight home defeat. Padilla allowed one run on seven hits, walked three and struck out two.

Our View:Padilla improved to 2-1 on the season with a 3.12 ERA.
April 11, 2008
Vicente Padilla is off to a favorable start as he holds a 1-0 record with a 2.77 ERA (over two games), and he could have another solid outing against Toronto tonight, according to MLB.com. Over his career against the Jays, Padilla is 3-1 with a 3.25 ERA over 27.2 innings. This is a good night to have him penciled into your lineups.
April 7, 2008
Vicente Padilla scattered nine hits, allowed three earned runs and struck out four without walking a batter in Sunday's win over the Angels. It was Padilla's second solid outing and his first win of the year. The right-hander looked confident in his fluid motion on Sunday, and his normally volatile demeanor appeared calm and collected. Padilla has the talent to record solid peripherals across the board, but he has never been known to have command of the mental side of the mound game.
March 26, 2008
Vicente Padilla struggled in a no decision on Wednesday as he surrendered five runs on 10 hits (two home runs) over six innings against San Diego, with one walk and four strikeouts. His spring ERA remains solid at 3.07 and he should remain penciled in as the Rangers' number two starter in the rotation.
March 11, 2008
Vicente Padilla was forced to exit Tuesday's exhibition game due to a strained gluteus maximus muscle, according to the Dallas Morning News. At this point, the Rangers believe the injury is minor, in which case it shouldn't have much of any effect on his preparation for the beginning of the regular season.
March 11, 2008
Vicente Padilla left Tuesday's game in the top of the fourth inning, though Dallas Morning News writer Evan Grant believed Padilla hadn't reached his 60-pitch max. Pitching coach Mark Connor and manager Ron Washington both went to the mound, but there was no visible sign of Padilla displaying an injury. We'll have to wait to see if Padilla was hurt, though the trainer apparently didn't join the others at the mound, so he could have been pulled for another reason.
March 6, 2008
Vicente Padilla worked three innings on Thursday and allowed one unearned run against the White Sox. On the day, Padilla walked two and struck out two while giving up one hit. Padilla is being counted on to throw 200 innings by the Rangers, but that might be a stretch given his propensity to find himself injured. Even if he does stay healthy, Texas is a bad place to pitch, so his upside is limited.
