Player Notes
July 13, 2008
David Eckstein was the designated hitter for the Toronto Blue Jays in their 4-1 victory over the Yankees. He went 1-for-4 with one strikeout in the game, and is hitting .269 on the year.

Our View:The diminutive shortstop isn't the most likely candidate to play DH, and he has struggled lately, with a .207 average in his last nine games. He holds little fantasy value.
July 4, 2008
The Baltimore Orioles have looked into acquiring shortstop David Eckstein from the Blue Jays, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View:It is well known that Toronto is looking to offload Eckstein and his $4.5 million salary. However, in terms of fantasy play, his move to Baltimore would do very little to increase his value.
July 3, 2008
The Blue Jays are not satisfied with the play of shortstop David Eckstein, and are actively searching for a shortstop in the trade market, according to the Toronto Sun.

Our View:Eckstein just does not bring much to the table in terms of fantasy value. In deep AL-only leagues, he may be someone to think about, but in mixed leagues, there are better options to have on your team.
May 27, 2008
The Blue Jays have activated shortstop David Eckstein who is in the lineup for Toronto this evening versus Oakland, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Eckstein went on the disabled list on May 8 with a strained right hip flexor, which he tested in five rehab games before being cleared. Manager John Gibbons plans to be cautious with Eckstein, batting .246 with one home run and 12 RBIs in 30 games this year. He'll likely sit out Wednesday night's middle game against the Oakland Athletics and play again in a day game Thursday.
May 26, 2008
David Eckstein , who was expected to return from the disabled list today, will be activated before Tuesday's game at Oakland. The starting shortstop has been rehabbing a hip flexor injury that resulted in him missing the last two weeks.

Our View:Eckstein is expected to return to his starting role at shortstop despite the solid performance of utilty infielder Marco Scutaro.
May 23, 2008
Manager John Gibbons said David Eckstein could be activated from the DL on Monday, according to the AP. The shortstop is coming back from a hip flexor injury.

Our View:Eckstein is expected to bat at the bottom of the order when he returns.
May 21, 2008
David Eckstein has suffered a setback in his return from a hip flexor injury, and he won't be back with the Blue Jays on Thursday as expected, according to the Toronto Globe and Mail. He is currently on a rehab assignment. "He was a little tender, and he didn't play (Tuesday) or today (Wednesday)," manager John Gibbons said. "There's still 4 1/2 months left in the season and we want this cleared up when he's here. So he'll need to play a few more games down there."

Our View:Gibbons also mentioned that Eckstein won't be in the leadoff spot when he returns, as he likes Brad Wilkerson there.
May 20, 2008
Toronto manager John Gibbons told the team website prior to Tuesday's game that David Eckstein is on target to rejoin the Jays for Thursday's game against the Angels.

Our View:Eckstein is currently on a rehab assignment with Class A Dunedin. In a game on Monday, the shortstop went 1-for-3 at the plate with a double and a walk.
May 8, 2008
Just a day after saying that he wouldn't be placed on the DL, David Eckstein was placed on the DL on Thursday with a strained hip flexor, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Are we the only ones who don't trust the Jays at all when it comes to coming clean about injuries? Deplorable that they feel honestly isn't warranted. Marco Scutaro will continue to start at short stop with Jorge Velandia and Joe Inglett to back him up.
May 7, 2008
David Eckstein will avoid the DL despite an injured hip, according to MLB.com. "Eckstein, in a pinch, could probably do something," GM J.P. Ricciardi said. "It's nothing really serious. He's pretty much day-to-day, so we're going to try to see if we can keep him playing." Injured John McDonald (ankle) will also avoid the DL.

Our View:Jorge Velandia was called up to give the team some depth until Eckstein and McDonald are ready to go.
May 6, 2008
David Eckstein left Tuesday's game in the fifth inning due to a sore right groin. John McDonald took his place.

Our View:That's all the info we have at the moment. We'll update the situation when more is known, which likely means sometime after the game against the Rays.
April 20, 2008
David Eckstein crushed a three-run homer in Sunday's 5-3 win over Detroit. He went 2-for-4 overall.

Our View:He collected six total bases today as his other hit was a double. That was also his first home run of the season, and he now racked up 11 RBI over 17 games. He could make a favorable option for your roster if you need depth at the position.
April 15, 2008
David Eckstein had three hits and scored three runs in the Jays 11-3 win over the Orioles.

Our View:Steady Eckstein won't have too many days at the plate like he had in the Jays Tuesday win, and isn't likely in too many starting lineups, save AL-only formats.
April 5, 2008
SS David Eckstein put the hurt on the Boston Red Sox today, serving as one of several offensive powers in a 10-2 victory. Eckstein went 2-for-5 at the plate, bringing three RBIs across home plate. On the bright side for Boston, Eckstein was caught stealing... and that's about all they stopped him from doing today.
April 2, 2008
David Eckstein went 0-for-4 with a strikeout against the Yankees on Tuesday, while leaving three men on base. He batted lead-off and will have to be more productive if he plans on keeping his important spot at the top of the order.
March 26, 2008
David Eckstein enjoyed a nice day at the plate in Toronto's 6-3 win over Cincinnati today. Eckstein went 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI (his eighth of spring training). Eck has never been known for swinging stick (hitting just .227 this spring), but days like this indicate he could work well at the top of Toronto's order.
March 6, 2008
David Eckstein did something he rarely does, that is he hit a HR on Thursday for the Jays. In fact, it was a grand slam. “I haven’t had solid contact the whole spring training,” said Eckstein on a report on the AP. “So it was finally nice to hit one solid.” Eckstein is struggling along with a .182 average this spring, but he figures to be his normal spunky, overachieving self for the Jays once the season starts.
