Aaron Rowand and the Phillies both declined their respective options for the 2007 season on Wednesday, making the center fielder eligible for salary arbitration, according to the AP. Rowand hit .262 with 12 home runs and 47 RBI in 109 games before his season ended after he broke his ankle in a collision during an Aug. 22 game at Chicago.

Aaron Rowand was examined Wednesday by a foot specialist, who determined that Rowand likely needs surgery on his broken ankle, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. Rowand will have an MRI today and then be re-examined tomorrow. If he does need surgery, he will definitely miss the rest of the season, which already seems likely.

Sources have told the Philadelphia Enquirer that Aaron Rowand suffered a broken ankle last night when he collided with Chase Utley. The injury will cause the outfielder to miss at least five weeks of action, which makes it likely that he will not play again this season if the Phillies fall short of the playoffs. The Phillies will place Rowand on the DL today and likely recall an outfielder from Triple-A. Shane Victorino should get the majority of playing time in center field while Rowand is out.
