Player Notes
May 14, 2008
C.C. Sabathia pitched a five-hitter and struck out 11 in the Cleveland Indians' major league-leading seventh shutout, a 2-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night.

Our View:If there was any question about whether last year's Cy Young winner was back on track, this effort against the A's should answer any and all questions.
May 9, 2008
C.C. Sabathia struck out nine over seven innings in a 6-1 win over Toronto. The reigning AL Cy Young winner gave up six hits, walked two and won for the first time in five decisions at home this season.

Our View:Sabathia has officially turned it around after a miserable start. With Friday's win, C.C. lowered his ERA to 6.55.
May 9, 2008
C.C. Sabathia will be looking for his second win of the season when the Indians host the Blue Jays tonight, according to MLB.com. The former Cy Young Award winner is 1-5 with a 7.51 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 38.1 innings, with 18 walks and 37 strikeouts. He has already allowed six home runs.

Our View:Sabathia has allowed nine runs in two of his seven starts this season, but has only allowed a total of five runs (and four walks) over his last three outings.
May 3, 2008
C.C. Sabathia fell to 1-5 in Saturday's 4-2 loss to Kansas City. He surrendered four runs on 10 hits over 6.1 innings, with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View:He held a 7.88 ERA and 1.78 WHIP heading into today's game, and his fifth loss in seven starts has fantasy owners worried.

Cleveland ace C.C. Sabathia tried his best to pick up his Indians and produce a win today, but the offensive support failed to show as dueling starter Chien-Ming Wang dominated the Indians' batting order, resulting in a devastating 1-0 loss for Sabathia. Sabathia pitched eight full innings, striking out eight and walking just one to allow one run on four hits.

Our View:78 of Sabathia's 111 pitches counted as strikes, but the end result is his worrisome fourth loss with an ERA of 7.87.

The Cleveland Indians may be close to reaching a new contract agreement with ace C.C. Sabathia , according to MLBTradeRumors.com. The site notes the team's ability to enjoy a financial windfall from the creation of a new local television network, SportsTime Ohio, as the reason to believe the team is going to make a strong push to get Sabathia signed.

Our View:The team has committed $132 million to roster payroll between now and 2014, and another $61.5 million has yet to be dedicated based on contract options to be exercised or declined. Sources close to team GM Mark Shapiro have suggested the goal of signing both Sabathia and 1B Ryan Garko remain the focus of their financial plans looking forward. Rumors like this can often turn on a moment depending on negotiations and the whims of ownership, but keep Sabathia should be a top priority. We will update as news becomes available.
April 22, 2008
C.C. Sabathia finally has one in the win column. The southpaw tossed six shutout innings and struck out 11 batters in Tuesday's victory over the Royals. Sabathia allowed four hits and walked two.

Our View:Sabathia is now only one frame away from getting his rotund ERA down below 10. Joking aside, fantasy owners should be feeling quite a bit better after seeing this outing.
April 22, 2008
C.C. Sabathia will be looking for his first win on the season when he takes the hill against the upstart Royals tonight, according to MLB.com. The Indians' ace is currently 0-3 with a 13.50 ERA over 18 innings.

Our View:He will duel with righty Gil Meche, who is 1-2 with a 6.08 ERA. Sabathia allowed nine runs in his last outing (against Detroit) and hopefully he can bounce back and hurl a quality start.
April 16, 2008
C.C. Sabathia was lit up yet again as he allowed nine runs to the Tigers to pick up his third loss of the year. Sabathia permitted eight hits, five walks and had only one K in four innings on the hill.

Our View:We don't advocate panicking at any time, but if you own C.C., it would be OK to do so right now. His ERA sits at 13.50 through four starts with a WHIP of 2.00, and he is simply destroying all pitching staffs that he resides on. They say he isn't hurt, but this is just downright disturbing.
April 16, 2008
C.C. Sabathia will be looking for his first win of the season when he takes the hill against the division rival Tigers tonight, according to MLB.com. He is 0-2 this season with a 11.57 ERA, but has fared fine versus Detroit over his career as he holds a 13-8 record, with a 4.30 ERA.

Our View:He will duel with Armando Galarraga, who will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to make his second career start. Sabathia should have the upper hand in this match-up.
April 11, 2008
C.C. Sabathia was torched on Friday as the A's batter the reigning Cy Young winner for 12 hits and nine runs in 3.1 innings. Yes, it's time to be worried. Perhaps all those innings have taken their toll on his arm, but even if they haven't C.C. has allowed 18 ER in 14 innings for a 11.57 ERA marking him as perhaps the biggest flop on the hill in the early going.
April 5, 2008
C.C. Sabathia fell to 0-1 on Saturday after allowing four runs on six hits and four walks to the A's in 5.1 innings. Sabathia has failed to pitch six innings in either of his two starts and his ERA sits at an uncomfortable 7.59 as of this writing. Sabathia is too good a pitcher not to bounce back, but perhaps all those innings last year will effect his performance slightly this season, and not in a positive way.
March 31, 2008
C.C. Sabathia didn't do his best Cy Young impression in the opening day start for Cleveland. The Indians left-handed ace worked 5.1 innings, allowing six runs, five hits, three walks and struck out seven in the no-decision.
March 31, 2008
Chicago Manager Ozzie Guillen commented that he is tired of facing C.C. Sabathia on opening day, according to MLB.com. Guillen stated, "I'm sick and tired of seeing C.C. on Opening Day. When the previous season is over, we know who we're going to be facing in the opener. Give me another ballclub to start the season with. Obviously, with the year we had last year, we shouldn't even be in the league. In a way, maybe it's good. This gives us a chance to surprise a lot of people. Last year when they sang the national anthem, we were already down by a run. When we took the field, we were down by seven runs." Sabathia is set to go against Mark Buehrle today.
March 26, 2008
C.C. Sabathia remains unbeaten as he pushed his record to 3-0 on Wednesday against Houston, while allowing three runs on seven hits over seven innings, with six strikeouts. It wasn't a dominant outing but it was enough to get the job done, as the Indians hung on to win 7-6.
March 21, 2008
C.C. Sabathia, who surrendered three earned runs and eight hits in six innings on Friday, has been handled gently this spring. The Cy Young winner threw too many pitches and worked too many innings (241) in his stellar 2007 campaign. The Braves recorded just one hit in his final three innings against Sabathia who is rounding into form as the regular season approaches. Sabathia had pitched only nine innings coming into Friday's six inning gig against the Braves.
March 6, 2008
C.C. Sabathia retired nine straight Astros in his three innings of work on Thursday. The former Cy Young winner isn't getting the respect of a Cy Young winner as Josh Beckett and Erik Bedard are both going before the Indian left-hander in most March drafts.
February 19, 2008
C.C. Sabathia, who is coming off a single season career high in innings pitched (241), will be pampered this spring notes MLB.com. Add 15 1/3 innings of postseason work to his 241 regular season innings and the team has decided to restrict his workload during Spring Training. The coaching staff will limit Sabathia to throwing every fifth day when Grapefruit League games begin.
February 14, 2008
C.C. Sabathia announced on his official website today that he has cut off contract talks with the Indians, saying "there will be time after the season for the Indians and my representatives to discuss my contract status." Of course, the Indians can hardly afford to lose Sabathia for mere draft picks if he demands a Johan Santana like deal and signs elsewhere this fall, so it's possible he could be traded at some point this year.
February 10, 2008
C.C. Sabathia appears content with the amount of dollars that the Indians are offering but not the length of the contract after seeing the contract Johan Santana received from the Mets. "There's no question C.C. wants to stay here and there's no question we want to keep him here," GM Mark Shapiro said. "The only question is can we find a business deal that is deemed to be equitable and fair by both parties?" Sabathia will likely want a 6-year deal, the Indians have not yet gone beyond four years. Sabathia is only 27-years-old and has won in double-digits while hurling at least 180 innings in each of his seven seasons. That Cy Young on his mantle certainly doesn't hurt either. February 5, 2008
The Johan Santana deal has set the market for C.C. Sabathia, who will become a free agent after the 2008 season, and even though the Indians may not be able to afford to keep the lefty, GM Mark Shapiro believes it will be up to Sabathia whether or not he ends up staying in Cleveland. When asked to comment on Santana's contract and how it pertains to Sabathia, Shapiro told the Cleveland Plain Dealer: "You're asking the wrong person... There have been recent deals signed by pitchers as talented and capable as C.C., and in a more similar market than ours. But none of that matters. The only thing that matters is how relevant C.C. and his agents feel it is. Not to shift the burden to them, but I can't answer you how relevant it is." One thing Shapiro does know is that he can't see the Tribe dealing the reigning AL Cy Young winner. "I can't present you with a scenario where it's acceptable to us or to our relationship with our fans that involves trading C.C. or examining trading him," said Shapiro.
February 4, 2008
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Indians made a four-year offer to C.C. Sabathia at the end of December (which included 2008). It's believed the new money in the Indians' offer to Sabathia is worth between $68 million and $72 million from 2009 and through 2012. The six-year, $137.5 million extension Johan Santana signed Friday with the Mets will probably make that offer to Sabathia insufficient. Sabathia is set to become a free agent after the 2008 season.
January 31, 2008
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that when Johan Santana breaks the bank by inking a multi-million dollar deal with the Mets, it will essentially stamp C.C. Sabathia's ticket out of Cleveland, as the Indians aren't going to come anywhere close to the $130 to $150 million Santana is likely to get to keep Sabathia, who is set to be a free agent after this season. "If Santana signs this contract, it will be another added reference point to establishing a market value for C.C.," Indians GM Mark Shapiro said. "It will be another contract along with Peavy's, Halladay's, Zambrano's and Carpenter's. How relevant it is is up to C.C. and his representatives."
