Player Notes
September 1, 2008
Casey Blake went 2-for-4 on Monday night for the Dodgers as he hit his seventh home run with the Dodgers, and his 18th overall.

Our View:Blake just gets it done, quietly but efficiently, year after year. With 18 home runs and 76 RBI, his power numbers almost match those of the more heralded Garrett Atkins (18-85).
August 16, 2008
Casey Blake had three hits, including a three-run homer, in the Dodgers' win over the Brewers Friday.

Our View:Manny Ramirez has been getting all the ink as far as Dodgers' newcomers go, but Blake has been pretty darn good, batting .303 with four homers and 12 RBI in 20 games.
July 29, 2008
The AP reports that Casey Blake was 2-for-4 with two runs scored on Monday against the Giants. However, he was thrown out of the game after his second strikeout. The first base umpire called his check swing a strike for the second time in the game and it was more than Blake could handle.

Our View:In a mere three games with the Dodgers, Blake has already gone through a number of ups and downs. His manager Joe Torre came to defend him and was also thrown out of the game.
July 27, 2008
Casey Blake went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and a walk in his second game with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. He hit seventh between Nomar Garciaparra and Andre Ethier.

Our View:A stinker game to follow up his solid debut on Saturday. Blake should remain about as effective as he was when he played on the Indians but give him a week or so to adjust to L.A.
July 26, 2008
Casey Blake went 2-for-3 with a double, and he also scored a run in his debut with the Dodgers in their 6-0 victory over the Nationals.

Our View:Blake hit sixth in the lineup, and if he stays at that spot in the order, he'll have plenty of opportunities to drive in runs and keep fantasy owners happy.

It is official as the Dodgers have made their official statement public: The Los Angeles Dodgers announced today they have acquired third baseman Casey Blake and cash considerations from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for minor league catcher Carlos Santana and minor league right-hander Jonathan Meloan. The announcement was made by Dodger General Manager Ned Colletti, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Our View:Blake leads the Indians with a .289 batting average and 58 runs batted in this season. He has hit 11 home runs and has posted a .365 on-base percentage and .465 slugging percentage. Blake's .393 batting average with runners in scoring position ranks fifth in the Major Leagues in 2008.

Updating a string of recent news stories we have posted this morning, Jayson Stark with ESPN.com is now reporting the trade between the Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Dodgers, sending third baseman Casey Blake west in exchange for minor league prospects, is in fact agreed upon and in league offices for review.

Our View:The Indians were believed to be receiving minor league catcher Carlos Santana and right-handed pitcher Jon Meloan, while the Dodgers will also receive cash in the deal. Santana is hitting .323, with 14 homers, for Inland Empire, in the Class A California League. The hard-throwing Meloan is 5-10, with a 4.97 ERA, at Triple-A Las Vegas -- but has piled up 335 strikeouts in only 262 innings in his minor league career.

Amid rumors of the Mets circling to pick third baseman Casey Blake from the Cleveland roster, reports out of Los Angeles now indicate the Dodgers are close to sealing a deal to obtain the power-hitting corner infielder, according to MLB.com.

Our View:The Dodgers are said to be close to acquiring Cleveland third baseman Casey Blake for a pair of Minor Leaguers, believed to be Triple-A pitcher Jon Meloan and Class A catcher Carlos Santana. Blake, a free agent after this year, has a salary of $6.1 million, and the Indians would pay all or most of it, according to a baseball source. We'll keep you posted.
July 26, 2008
The Mets are rumored to be seeking a corner infielder before the trade deadline arrives, and reports out of New York indicate they may be targeting Cleveland's Casey Blake , Seattle's Raul Ibanez, or Pittsburgh's Jason Bay, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View:The belief is that those teams' demands, currently exorbitant, will relax as Thursday's trading deadline approaches. GM Omar Minaya wouldn't discuss individual players, but acknowledged the organization has started to focus on particular targets. However, the Pirates' trade of Xavier Nady last night might change Pittsburgh's plans about trading Bay, and thus it would seem Blake could be the ideal target for such needs. We'll keep you posted.
July 25, 2008
Casey Blake went 2-for-4 in the Indians 5-4 win over Minnesota, and he also scored a run.

Our View:This will only help the Indians, because teams are vying for a bat and it is no secret Casey is available.
July 25, 2008
The Mets are highly interested in acquiring Casey Blake before the trade deadline, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

Our View:But they may lack a quality player they can afford to deal to interest the Indians. If the Mets do manage to bring him to New York, they would like to employ him in the outfield to fill a void in that area.
July 22, 2008
The Philadelphia Phillies have expressed interest in Casey Blake, reports Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

Our View:Blake could fill the void in right field for the Phillies.
July 10, 2008
Casey Blake had two hits, including his ninth home run, on his way to three RBI for the Indians.

Our View:Blake is one of the least sexy picks in the fantasy game, but year after year he does enough to be worth having at the end of your bench. Blake is currently hitting .282 with 51 RBI, numbers that are better than a whole lot of players that were drafted in front of this guy.
July 1, 2008
Casey Blake went 3-for-4 with an RBI in Tuesday's tough 3-2 loss to the White Sox. The Indians have now dropped four straight games.

Our View:Blake extended his hitting streak to eight games, with three multi-hit efforts. He raised his average a few more points to .287, and has emerged as a quality fantasy starter in mixed-leagues.
June 19, 2008
Casey Blake hit his seventh home run of the season in a Thursday night 6-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies. Blake also committed his ninth error of the season.

Our View:Blake could have been charged with an additional error. His field presence was horrible, but it didn't carry over into the batters box as the third baseman went 3-for-4 and raised his batting average (.263) eight points with the performance.
June 18, 2008
The Rockies found revenge for last night's loss, beating Cleveland 4-2 in tonight's interleague action. The Indians found just six hits on the night, led by third baseman Casey Blake , going 2-for-4 with one run scored.

Our View:Blake is hitting .321 this month and 11 runs scored and 12 RBIs.
June 2, 2008
Casey Blake had a monster night in Texas. The third baseman homered twice, doubled, and drove in seven runs against the Rangers. Blake did that all by the fourth inning but was quiet thereafter.

Our View:Blake now owns seven- and six-RBI outings this season. His other 48 games have been much less exciting. Inconsistency is a big reason why Blake is hitting just .236, but maybe he'll heat up with the weather.
May 16, 2008
Casey Blake went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Friday's 4-3 loss to Cincinnati. One of his hits went for a home run, his third of the season.

Our View:Blake is still only hitting .229 but has 26 RBI over 37 games.
May 12, 2008
Casey Blake is 6-for-12 with six RBI over his last four games, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Our View:Blake is only hitting .236 for the season, but has 25 RBI over 32 games, and is worth starting while he remains hot.
May 8, 2008
Casey Blake went 1-for-3 and collected two RBI in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Yankees. His hit was good for a double, his eighth of the season.

Our View:Blake, along with several other members of the Tribe, is still struggling at the plate, as he was only hitting .192 coming into today's game.
May 2, 2008
Indians' manager Eric Wedge moved Franklin Gutierrez, who is batting .471 over his last four games, up to the No. 2 spot, and lowered Casey Blake to No. 8 slot for Friday's game against the Royals.

Our View:With a lineup full of players scuffling with the bad, Wedge who is not afraid to change his lineup card, has had to get creative this week. Travis Hafner is hitting from the No. 6 spot.
April 22, 2008
Casey Blake had a monster night against the Royals on Tuesday. The third baseman went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a grand slam, and six RBI.

Our View:Blake is hitting only .233, but he is hitting over .300 with runners in scoring position and owns 16 RBI. He remains a generally boring but productive fantasy asset.
April 18, 2008
Casey Blake hit his first home run of the season on Friday as he had two hits, scored a run, and knocked in three in the Indians victory over the Twins.

Our View:Blake needed this outing really badly as he entered the game hitting just .152. Look for him to use this as a spring board to some more productive AB.
April 7, 2008
Casey Blake was not in the starting lineup for Sunday's win over Oakland. Blake, who hit .270 with 18 homers and 78 RBI in 2007, historically has not been effective against A's starter Joe Blanton. The third baseman was batting only .118, just 1-for-11 lifetime against the A's right-hander.
April 3, 2008
Casey Blake broke up John Danks' bid for a no-hitter on Thursday, as he belted a single to center field to lead off the sixth inning, this according to the Plain Dealer. He already had a three-RBI game in this series with Chicago.
April 1, 2008
Casey Blake came up big in the Indians' close 10-8 win over the rival White Sox, as he went 1-for-4 with three RBI. Blake has his season off to a great start and was the Indians' hero for a day.
March 23, 2008
Casey Blake went 2-for-3 with two RBI against the Mets on Saturday. He raised his spring average to .258 and is expected to be the Opening Day starter at third base.
February 1, 2008
Casey Blake and the Indians came to terms on a one-year deal on Friday, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Terms were not disclosed, but it's believed the deal is worth close to $6 million. Blake filed for $6.9 million, while the Indians countered at $5.4 million. He hit .270 with 36 doubles, four triples, 18 homers and 78 RBI last season, and his 26-game hitting streak was the longest in the American League.
